Make Small Changes in Your Diet to Dramatically Improve Your Health ...
How important is your diet to your overall health? A recent study suggests that a healthy diet can add as many as 14 years to your life. This mindset is largely ignored by most people. The good news is that even small changes can make a big difference, though. And kids are one of the most important groups of people who should be making changes! Parents have a responsibility to not short-change their children's current and future health.

Exercise Could Be The Heart's Fountain Of Youth...
Absence may make the heart grow fonder, but endurance exercise seems to make it younger. According to a study conducted at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, older people who did endurance exercise training for about a year ended up with metabolically much younger hearts. The researchers also showed that by one metabolic measure, women benefited more than men from the training.

High omega-3 diet of Japanese linked with significantly lower heart disease risk compared to Americans...
"The death rate from coronary heart disease in Japan has always been puzzlingly low," Dr Sekikawa observed. "Our study suggests that the very low rates of coronary heart disease among Japanese living in Japan may be due to their lifelong high consumption of fish. Our study clearly demonstrated that whites and Japanese-Americans have similar levels of atherosclerosis, which are much higher than in the Japanese in Japan. This indicates that much lower death rates from coronary heart disease in the Japanese in Japan is very unlikely due to genetic factors." "Our study suggests that very high levels of omega-3 fatty acids have strong properties that may help prevent the buildup of cholesterol in the arteries," Dr Sekikawa stated. "Increasing fish intake to two times a week for healthy people is currently recommended in the U.S. Our study shows much higher intake of fish observed in the Japanese [approximately 3 ounces daily] may have strong anti-atherogenic effect."

Vitamin D May Protect Against Peripheral Artery Disease...
People with low vitamin D levels may face an increased risk for peripheral artery disease (PAD), according to researchers at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University.
People obtain vitamin D by making it themselves (through skin exposure to sunlight), by ingesting foods such as fish and fortified dairy products that contain vitamin D, or by taking dietary supplements. Adequate vitamin D levels are necessary for bone health, but scientists are only beginning to explore vitamin D's connection to cardiovascular disease.

A Magnesium Defficiency Increases Cancer Risk Significantly ...
There is a power and a force in magnesium that cannot be equaled anywhere else in the world of medicine. There is no substitute for magnesium in human physiology; nothing comes even close to it in terms of its effect on overall cell physiology. Without sufficient magnesium, the body accumulates toxins and acid residues, degenerates rapidly, and ages prematurely. It goes against a gale wind of medical science to ignore magnesium chloride used transdermally in the treatment of any chronic or acute disorder, especially cancer.

Grape seed extract may prevent Alzheimer's: study...
A polyphenol-rich extract from grape seed may prevent the build up of plaques in the brain that may cause Alzheimer's disease, according to a study from Mount Sinai/UCLA.
Using Tg2576 mice, which also experience build up of the beta-amyloid proteins and are thus used to model human Alzheimer's disease, the researchers found that oral administration of the grape seed extract led to a significant reduction in the cognitive decline associated with Alzheimer's disease, in addition to a decrease in the amount of beta-amyloid proteins in the brains of the animals, report the researchers, led by Dr. Giulio Pasinetti at Mount Sinai School of Medicine."Our study suggests that grape seed-derived polyphenolics may be useful agents to prevent or treat AD," wrote the researchers.

Can Sugar Substitutes Make You Fat?...
When it comes to dieting, most of us are willing to resort to a trick or two to help us curb our appetite and eat less — drinking water to fill up when we're hungry, for example, or opting for artificial sweeteners instead of sugar to get the same satisfying sweetness without the offending calories. But new research suggests that the body is not so easily fooled, and that sugar substitutes are no key to weight loss — perhaps helping to explain why, despite a plethora of low-calorie food and drink, Americans are heavier than ever.

4 Ways to Add 7 Years to Your Life...
Independent research sponsored by several different organizations shows that owning a pet can add up to 7 years to your life. This is because pets provide companionship and help reduce stress levels, which in turn decreases the chances of suffering a heart attack or stroke. Dog owners are also more likely to get daily exercise, an important factor in staying fit and fighting several weight-related diseases. Finally, pet owners are less likely to suffer from depression. Owning a pet forces you to get out of bed every day, even if you don't feel like it. The feelings of unconditional love and companionship are also intrinsically related to counteracting depression.

The bitter truth about high fructose corn syrup - Don't skip this one!!!

This is a must see study if you or your children are fighting weight problems and eat or drink foods and sodas that contain high fructose corn syrup. This study is not new to me, I have been blogging on this for over 4 years, but I am sure people are missing just how big this really is. Notice that this study was done with thin people. If you are already battling fat accumulation and have elevated insulin levels or insulin resistance, this will have a much larger effect on your health and weight issues you may be dealing with.
Now the scientist involved in this study didn't want to get in trouble with the big companies that use this substance in almost everything they make. Why do they use it? Because it is cheap. Not because they care about your health.
I have highlighted in red the main points, so you can read this fast if you are in a hurry, but please don't miss the point. I virtually eat nothing that contains high fructose corn syrup, and have been making it a conscious effort for many years.

So big is this problem that a courageous store in Seattle called PCC Natural Markets, has banned foods and drinks that contain this sweetener.

Now you have choice. And it will and does have profound effects on your health now and in the future.

Fructose again linked to fat build-up: study...
By Stephen Daniells

25/07/2008- Fat build-up from fructose consumption may be greater than what occurs when we eat other types of sugars, such as glucose and sucrose, according to a new study.
Researchers from the University of Texas recruited six young, healthy, lean people to take part in their study, which compared the formation of fat (lipogenesis) following consumption of pure glucose, or combinations of glucose and fructose. The results are published in the Journal of Nutrition. "Our study shows for the first time the surprising speed with which humans make body fat from fructose," said Elizabeth Parks from the UT's Southwestern Medical Center. "[Fructose, glucose and sucrose] can be made into triglycerides, a form of body fat; however, once you start the process of fat synthesis from fructose, it's hard to slow it down," she added. However, Dr Parks was quick to point out that it is misleading to suggest the consumption of a specific food or food ingredient was the cause of obesity and the rise of type-2 diabetes. "There are lots of people out there who want to demonize fructose as the cause of the obesity epidemic," she said. "I think it may be a contributor, but it's not the only problem. Americans are eating too many calories for their activity level. We're overeating fat, we're overeating protein; and we're over-eating all sugars," she said.

Study details...
Parks and co-workers recruited four men and two women with an average age of 28, and an average BMI of 24.3 kg per sq. m. The volunteers consumed three soft drinks on three separate occasions; one was sweetened with 100 per cent glucose, the second with 50 per cent glucose and 50 per cent fructose, and the third with 25 per cent glucose and 75 per cent fructose. The tests were random and blinded. The UT researchers report that lipogenesis increased from 7.8 per cent for the glucose beverage, to 15.9 per cent after the 50:50 beverage and 16.9 per cent after the 25:75 beverage. Moreover, blood triglyceride levels were between 11 and 29 per cent higher after consumption of the 50:50 and 25:75 beverage, compared to the 100 per cent glucose drink. "The message from this study is powerful because body fat synthesis was measured immediately after the sweet drinks were consumed," said Dr. Parks said. "The carbohydrates came into the body as sugars, the liver took the molecules apart like tinker toys, and put them back together to build fats. All this happened within four hours after the fructose drink. As a result, when the next meal was eaten, the lunch fat was more likely to be stored than burned." "This is an underestimate of the effect of fructose because these individuals consumed the drinks while fasting and because the subjects were healthy, lean and could presumably process the fructose pretty quickly. Fat synthesis from sugars may be worse in people who are overweight or obese because this process may be already revved up," she added.

Metabolism of fructose...
The metabolism of glucose and fructose is different, said the researchers. In humans, triglycerides are predominantly formed in the liver. This organ decides what to do when it encounters glucose. The sugar is either stored as glycogen, burnt for energy or turn the glucose into triglycerides. On the other hand, fructose bypassing the liver and floods the metabolic pathway, said the researchers. "It's a less-controlled movement of fructose through these pathways that causes it to contribute to greater triglyceride synthesis," said Parks. "The bottom line of this study is that fructose very quickly gets made into fat in the body."
The work was supported by the National Institutes of Health, the Cargill Higher Education Fund and the Sugar Association. Well studied Research from the University of Florida in 2005 reported similar results. In that instance the research implicated a rise in uric acid in the bloodstream that occurs after fructose is consumed. That temporary spike blocks the action of insulin, which typically regulates how body cells use and store sugar and other food nutrients for energy. If uric acid levels are frequently elevated, over time features of metabolic syndrome may develop, including high blood pressure, obesity and elevated blood cholesterol levels.
"We cannot definitively state that fructose is driving the obesity epidemic," said researcher Richard Johnson, from UF's College of Medicine Johnson, in 2005. "But we can say that there is evidence supporting the possibility that it could have a contributory role - if not a major role. I am going nuts today...

If you have ever consulted with me you know I love nuts and natural peanut butter as healthy snacks especially if you want to be thin. Almost everyday I have at least 1 or 2 snacks between meals of 1 Wasa Rye Cracker with Adams Natural Crunchy Peanut Butter. Unlike, wheat or oats, rye releases its carbohydrate content slow into the blood stream and has phytonutrients that help you lose weight and improve your metabolism. See the Rye versus oat, wheat & potato study.
I especially like raw walnuts, brazil nuts, almonds, pistachios, peanuts and dry roasted macadamia nuts the most in the nut kingdom. I recently found a great website that offers superior quality nuts at reasonable prices with quick delivery right to your home. Check them out... NutsOnline.

Here are some recent studies on the health benefits of nuts.

The "Peanut Butter Diet": Heart-Healthy Alternative To Olive Oil...
Cholesterol-lowering, low fat diets have abounded in recent years in the quest to reduce the risk of heart disease, the most familiar being the American Heart Association's "Step II" diet, which confines dietary fat to less than 25% of calories and replaces the lost fat with carbohydrates. But recent research into the effects of monounsaturated fats (MUFAs, found in olive and certain other oils) suggests that low fat may not necessarily be the best way to ensure a healthy heart.
The high-MUFA diet goes against the conventional wisdom of heart disease prevention in that it is even higher in fat than the average American diet. Instead of replacing lost dietary fats with carbohydrates, the high MUFA diet makes up the "fat equation" with increased amounts of several different monounsaturated fats.

Sunflower Seeds, Pistachios Among Top Nuts For Lowering Cholesterol...
Researchers have known for some time that nuts and seeds are rich sources of phytosterols, a class of plant chemicals that have been shown to reduce cholesterol levels and improve heart health. In what is believed to be the most comprehensive analysis to date of the phytosterol content of nuts and seeds, chemists at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacksburg, Va., analyzed some 27 nut and seed products and found that pistachios and sunflower kernels had the highest levels of phytosterols among the nuts and seeds that are most commonly consumed as snack foods in the United States. Their study appears in the Nov. 30 issue of the American Chemical Society's Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry.

Brazil Nuts are a great snack and are packed with a selenium to give you a health boost to start your day. Available in bulk at great prices.

Pistachios Lower Cholesterol, Provide Antioxidants...
A handful of pistachios may lower cholesterol and provide the antioxidants usually found in leafy green vegetables and brightly colored fruit, according to a team of researchers. "Pistachio amounts of 1.5 ounces and 3 ounces -- one to two handfuls -- reduced risk for cardiovascular disease by significantly reducing LDL cholesterol levels and the higher dose significantly reduced lipoprotein ratios," says Sarah K. Gebauer, graduate student in integrative biosciences, Penn State, to attendees at the Experimental Biology meeting April 30 in Washington, D.C.

Macadamia Nuts are a gourmet's delight and are available in bulk at great prices at NutsOnline.com.

Hawaiian Treasure, Macadamia Nuts Good For The Heart...
Incorporating macadamia nuts into a heart healthy diet can reduce cardiovascular disease risks according to Penn State researchers. "We looked at macadamia nuts because they are not currently included in the health claim for tree nuts, while other tree nuts are recommended as part of a healthy diet," says Dr. Amy E. Griel, recent Ph.D. recipient in nutritional sciences. "Macadamia nuts have higher levels of monounsaturated fats, like those found in olive oil compared with other tree nuts."

Fat facts you should know...

Today I wanted to talk a bit about fats, which ones are good, which ones are bad and whether you should be fearful of cholesterol in your diet.

Fats are essential for health. The healthiest cultures eat high amounts of good fats and have low levels of chronic degenerative diseases. Understanding the Epigenetic effects of good and bad fats will make a big difference in your families health.

Basically there are 2 kinds of essential fats, omega 3's and omega 6's. We need both to be healthy. Omega 3's have a epigenetic switch of turning inflammation OFF, while omega 6's have the opposite switch of turning inflammation ON.

The ideal ratio of omega 3's to omega 6's is 1 to 1. Our typical American diet has a ratio of at least 20 omega 6's to 1 omega 3's... What does that mean? It means our typical American diet is very PRO-INFLAMMATORY.

Do you consume the following oils?
Corn
Canola
Soybean
Sunflower

Even if you don't, if you consume commercially produced process packaged foods, salad oils, etc... you are getting loads of these PRO-INFLAMMATORY fats.

Take a few moments and learn the facts from the articles and studies below.

cw

Cave men diets offer insights to today's health problems, study shows...

Eat meat. That's the dietary advice given by a team of scientists who examined the dietary role of fat in a study that combined nutritional analysis with anthropologic research about the diets of ancient hunter-gatherer societies.
But there's a catch: To be as healthy as a cave man you have to eat certain kinds of fish, wild game such as venison, or grass-fed meat such as beef.
The research was conducted by Bruce Watkins, professor and university faculty scholar at Purdue University and director of the Center for Enhancing Foods to Protect Health, and anthropologist Loren Cordain, professor of health and exercise science at Colorado State University and author of "The Paleo Diet" (John Wiley & Sons, 2002). Watkins and Cordain conducted detailed chemical analysis of the meats people ate 10,000 years ago and compared those results to the most common meat people eat today.
They found that wild game, such as venison or elk meat, as well as grass-fed beef, contain a mixture of fats that are actually healthy for you, and, the researchers say, lower cholesterol and reduce other chronic disease risk.
Recent studies have indicated that a healthy diet should contain a balance of essential fats. The two types of most concern are omega-6 and omega-3, and both are essential for proper nutrition. Omega-3 fat, which is often found in high levels in certain fish, has been shown to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, but too much omega-3 can increase the risk of stroke. Omega-6 fat also is an essential fat, but too much omega-6 in the diet can contribute to inflammatory responses associated with of chronic disease.

More fish oil, less vegetable oil, better for your health...
Scientists have provided new evidence that using more fish oil than vegetable oil in the diet decreases the formation of chemicals called prostanoids, which, when produced in excess, increase inflammation in various tissues and organs. The results, by William L. Smith, Professor and Chair of Biological Chemistry at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and colleagues, may help in designing new anti-inflammatory drugs with fewer side effects than the ones currently available.
“Prostanoids help control blood pressure, fight allergies, and modulate inflammation, but too much of them – especially those made from vegetable oils – can also lead to increased pain, swelling, and redness in various tissues,” Smith says. “Our study shows that prostanoids made from fish oil are less effective at causing pain and swelling than those made from vegetable oil and that adding fish oil to the diet decreases the amount of prostanoids made from vegetable oil.”

Does Cholesterol Matter? Only if You're on a Cholesterol-Lowering Drug...
The makers of Zetia and Vytorin (which combines Zetia and Zocor) recently announced that their aggressively advertised cholesterol-lowering drugs failed to slow the development of fatty plaque in arteries. In fact, the drugs actually promote the formation of plaque in arteries, which fuels heart disease and increases the risk of a heart attack. The announcement –- in a news release, not a medical journal –- came after long delays in reporting the findings of their study.

Taking a Closer Look at the Inuit Paradox and Cardiovascular Disease ...
Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) is rare in Inuit people who continue to eat their ‘traditional’ diet. But how can eating a diet predominantly consisting of seal meat, fat and blubber and almost completely void of greens, fruits and fiber be ‘preventative’ of the very disease which plagues the entire western world and for which medical orthodoxy blames on diets high in saturated fats and cholesterol? Also, by adopting medicine’s low-fat, low-cholesterol diet and drug regimes, CVD continues to increase with no cures in site. Herein lies the paradox... if high fat and high cholesterol diets cause CVD, then what is ‘protecting’ the traditional Inuit, which has thrived on a diet rich in both?
One of the differences is that the traditional Inuit’s diet is very high in Omega-3 fats while our western diet is very high in Omega-6 fats. Science has shown that the ratio of Omega-6 to Omega-3 should be as close to a ratio of 1:1 and certainly no more than 4:1. Inuits are about the only peoples to approach the 1:1 ratio while we typically come in at 20:1 and the real junk foodists are measuring in at upwards of 50:1 ratios. A balanced Omega-6 to Omega-3 ratio promotes a homeostasis, non-inflammatory state in the body while a tilt to the high Omega-6 side will promote an inflammatory and therefore disease and degenerative state.

Are you trying to lose weight, lack energy or mental sharpness? I have a solution for you... Give it a try.

A few weeks ago I highlighted a product called Mitochondria Energy Booster in a Blog about weight loss. I have recommended this product and similar formulations for a long time for improving energy, memory and mental sharpness, as well as it's ability to improve fat loss for people who exercise and or are dieting. Many of the nutrients in this formula I use as part of my anti-aging reversal program and products I have formulated like MENTAL FOCUS.

I know people are reluctant to try new things and aren't sure they would make a difference. I know how good the products are that I recommend because I use them and experiment continually with the ingredients in my own life and in my own formulations, but I know I am an exception in that regard.

Today I thought I might highlight what people are saying who have tried this product for themselves, in an effort to say to you, if it works for them, it might help you as well. Let me know if this kind of information helps and I will do more of this. Just e-mail me or use the comment box with any feed back you have. I always appreciate comments. Also, if you have had excellent results with any of my suggestions, lets hear from you as well. I think people benefit from these kind of testimonials.

Good health to you!!!

cw

WHAT A BOOST!!!,
"This product really did wonders for my workouts especially during cardio. It takes a while to notice the difference but the ingredients do work! The CoQ10 and ALA are very beneficial.THANKS FOR THE "BOOST"!!!"
Age: 35-44
Gender: Male

Very good product,
"This product is the 1st I've ever tried that really worked to boost energy. Don't expect immediate results though. It takes time to work because it works on a cellular level. Within 2 weeks I had more energy. I can walk longer, faster, and further."

Amazing Results,
"A full milligram of B12 per serving for such a low price was originally what drew me to this product. The full list of ingredients, including beneficial levels of ALA & CoQ10 closed the deal. I've been taking the product for two months now and have noticed numerous benefits from it, including: more energy, a better memory, and an overall feeling of goodness. The bright orange capsules are easy to swallow and there are only 4 capsules per serving. I have not experienced the nausea other B-Vitamins have given me while taking this product. I will take this supplement for the rest of my life."

What a Surprise!,
"I've been taking CoQ 10 for several years for my heart condition. Didn't feel any difference but 'knew' it was helpful.Well, the first day I took the NSI Mitochondrial Energy Booster with 200 mg CoQ 10 I felt a big difference! I actually had more energy; it felt as though my circulation had improved.....And I hadn't been expecting any of this."
Age: 75
Gender: Female

Great Memory Booster,
"I read an article that said mitochondria helped to improve memory - so I thought I'd give it a try. It really works! It doesn't seem to do anything as far as giving me more energy, but I have noticed my memory retention is higher. Mitochondrial co-factors may help neurons function more efficiently, slash free radical production and lead to improvements in brain function. Sure worked for me!"

NSI Mitochondrial Energy Booster,
"I am 53 years old and I was feeling tired and coffee just was not helping. I saw an ad for NSI Mitochondrial Energy Booster with 200 mg of CoQ10 and decided to give it a try. It has really helped and now I use it every day! I recommended it to my parents who are in their 80's and I would recommend it to anyone who is experiencing fatigue."

CoQ10, B-complex, ALC, lipoic acid and more!,
"Wow, what a powerful combination of nutrients proven to benefit cellular energy health and function. If you bought them all separate you would take many more pills per day at double the cost! Great value as usual with NSI."

Good value - Good product,
"Pre this product I used to get ALC, ALA, Vitamin B's and CoQ10 separately. Now I get the same plus several minerals for a fair price. I do not know how the quality of the ingredients are compared to high quality brands. But it is for sure a potent formula that I recommend to anyone wanting to take the basic supplements for anti aging. I am about through with my first bottle and will order this once again. A plus would be the possibility to choose a similar formula with less CoQ10"
Age: 35-44
Gender: Male

NSI® Mitochondrial Energy Booster with 200 mg of CoQ10 enhances energy and supports cardiovascular health.

How does NSI® Mitochondrial Energy Booster work?
NSI® Mitochondrial Energy Booster with 200 mg of CoQ10 is a powerful formulation that helps boost energy at the cellular level. It contains Acetyl L-carnitine which helps transport fat through the cell membrane where it is more efficiently utilized in the mitochondria of the cell.
This product also contains Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10), or ubiquinone, a naturally-occurring, vitamin-like nutrient. In its highest concentration, CoQ10 is found in cell mitochondria where energy is produced. This versatile antioxidant supports heart function and helps to convert food and oxygen into energy. It may support healthy blood pressure and cholesterol levels as well as a healthy immune system.

My people perish from lack of knowledge...

Taking responsibility for our health is not always easy. Protecting our children from wrong habits may be the most difficult thing we as parents are accountable for.

For the last few years there have been many studies that have suggested that Alzheimer's disease may in fact be involved with hyper insulinemia, which causes glucose intolerance and insulin resistance. What if we could take one simple step as parents to greatly reduce our children's chances, as well as our own, of developing alzheimer's disease, high cholesterol, high triglycerides, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and obesity. What if we could prevent ourselves and our children from ending up on drugs that have nasty side effects, and we end up only taking because of our lack of knowledge and concern about the things we are purchasing at the store.

Consuming soda drinks with high fructose corn syrup and or high sugar, as well as energy drinks that have high caffeine and sugar as there primary ingredient, has profound effects on your health now and later. Are you aware that kids are not only gaining weight these days, but they are getting type 2 diabetes before their teens and are now being prescribed drugs for cholesterol control. Did you know that these children may end up developing heart disease and or strokes, by the time they get into their mid 30's.
What are we doing to ourselves and our children?

Knowledge is the key.

Please read these studies and take charge of not only your health, but the health of your children.... Talk with them and share information like what I have on the Blog. Let them know you care and it matters.

Good health to you all...

cw

Sugary Drink Consumption Linked to Alzheimer's Disease ...
High consumption of sugary beverages may increase the risk of developing Alzheimer's disease, according to a new study conducted by the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. Researchers took mice that were genetically predisposed to develop Alzheimer's-like symptoms as adults, and added a 10 percent sugar water solution to the diet of half of them. After 25 weeks, the mice fed the sugar water had gained 17 percent more weight than the other mice. Unlike the other mice, they had also developed insulin resistance and had higher cholesterol.

Overweight Children Show Increased Risk of Heart Attacks, Strokes ...
Epidemic obesity among children today will lead to a surge in the occurrence of premature heart attacks in strokes as those children age, according to two studies published in the New England Journal of Medicine. In the first study, researchers from the University of California at San Francisco and Columbia University used computer modeling to predict the likely effects of obesity in children. The study concluded that obese children are 19 percent more likely to die from heart disease, beginning when they hit age 35.

Study shows 150 percent jump in statin use...
Use of cholesterol-lowering drugs called statins rose by 156 percent between 2000 and 2005, with spending jumping from $7.7 billion to $19.7 billion, the U.S. Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality reported on Wednesday.
"The number of people purchasing statins nearly doubled when comparing 2000 and 2005, rising from 15.8 million people to 29.7 million people," the AHRQ report reads.

The Coming Epidemic Of Type 2 Diabetes In Young Adults...
How will the epidemic of childhood obesity today affect the future health of Americans? As concern about children’s health grows along with their waistlines, medical experts fear that the childhood obesity epidemic could lead to large numbers of younger adults developing type 2 diabetes, causing serious and lasting health complications for future generations of Americans.
In a new article, University of Michigan C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital pediatric endocrinologist Joyce Lee, M.D., M.P.H, warns that the most damaging effects of childhood obesity have yet to surface, and will likely result in an epidemic of type 2 diabetes among young adults, leading to a greater number of diabetes complications, and ultimately, lower life expectancy.

Helping HealthBlogger & cwiechert.com grow and prosper…

Do you like Public Television?
Do you know when they have those telethons to raise money?
This Blog is my version of a HealthBlogger / cwiechert.com - athon. Sort of...

The short version…You currently receive HealthBlogger free of charge.
I want to keep it that way.
To sustain these activities I must create cash flow.
That occurs when products are purchased from my website, Blogs and e-mail programs I send out to clients.
By supporting my affiliation websites, you help support my research efforts that I sincerely hope you find useful and life changing.

The devil though is in the details and the details are important, so please read on…I have done health consulting for over 30 years now. A few years ago, I changed my goal from working with just a small group of people in a large metropolitan area like the San Francisco Bay Area where I was living, to an online concept to hopefully reach thousands, via the Internet. It is a great and noble vision, and one, which I have worked hard to create. It has its challenges however, which is the purpose of this bog.

My goal was to reduce my expenditures down to as little as possible and do what I like best, research. I spend 80% to 90% of my time researching studies that might not get turned into practical application for 20 to 40 years. No one who is in practice has the time to do that anymore, with rare exceptions, it's just too demanding time wise and still see clients.

MY MISSION STATEMENT...I believe in win-win transactions whenever possible in all aspects of my life. If I can find a great quality product at an affordable price, or formulate one myself that can really have a difference on your health and not just make you think you are taking something great because the label says there are small amounts listed on the label, (a common practice in the supplement industry) then I feel I have performed a valuable service to my readers and clients.

If you appreciate what I send you in the form of information and you decide to use that information to better your life, it makes a big difference to me if you use the links in my e-mails and websites, and not buy them from some other source or affiliates websites or catalogs directly.
I appreciate and need your business.

If you read one of my blogs and go out and buy a product from a store, you are either going to pay more or get an inferior product. That’s almost certain.

I have another challenge in this online world I am in, if you order from NSI/Vitacost catalog you get the same price, they send me nothing. If you order from an e-mail from NSI/Vitacost, you pay the same price and they send me nothing. If you on the other hand order online from my links and e-mails, you pay the same price, you know what product is best to order and they send me a very small commission from their wholesale dollar as a thank you for sending them the business.
That's how affiliations work.
I consider this a win – win for all of us and my hope is you do as well.
Many of you order originally from my links, but then revert to ordering from their catalog or put there website in your favorites and just order direct, or you buy from e-mails you get from them.

The bottom line is this…The easiest way to help me is to use the links on my websites or e-mails, before ordering online when you purchase from NSI/Vitacost. That’s all you need to do.
Also you can help me expand my audience by sending along any Blogs that you feel have merit to loved ones and friends and encourage them to subscribe, it’s free.

Hopefully all of this makes sense and if so, to use a phrase someone else uses on television, TRY MY PRODUCTS.

Good health to each and all of you... I appreciate any and all efforts you do in this area to help me grow and prosper in the online world and to keep me providing you with state of the art nutritional advice and information.

Aging experts from around the world speak out on how to treat disease...

If you have been keeping up on my Blogs recently, you know I have changed my focus from supporting health issues selectively, by nutritional means, to dealing with the aging process itself as the best way to prevent all age related diseases. The leading anti -aging experts around the world agree and have recently spoken out. They call it "the longevity dividend". Nutritional programs that improve the function of the mitochondria, help alleviate cellular damage to it and remove the waste products created during the process, is where science is leading us in almost every study I look at these days. We know how to do that very effectively based on lots of studies and you can start doing today what these scientists are recommending in the first article this week.
If you are ready to take the leap and try a formal program designed to tackle reduced aging, I have 3 programs that I have developed based on your budget.
Go to my page... Defying the years for all the details and begin by changing to an anti-inflammatory diet.

cw

Slowing Aging Is Way To Fight Diseases In 21st Century...
A group of aging experts from the United States and the United Kingdom suggest that the best strategy for preventing and fighting a multitude of diseases is to focus on slowing the biological processes of aging. "The traditional medical approach of attacking individual diseases -- cancer, diabetes, heart disease, Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease -- will soon become less effective if we do not determine how all of these diseases either interact or share common mechanisms with aging," says S. Jay Olshansky, professor of epidemiology at the University of Illinois at Chicago School of Public Health and senior author of the commentary.

Reduced Mitochondrial Function Important Mechanism In Aging...
Scientists at the Karolinska Institute have found that changes in the "powerhouse" of cells, the mitochondria, play a key role in aging. The findings are being published in this week's issue of the journal Nature. Mitochondria, which provide energy to cells, have their own set of DNA. Mutations of mitochondrial DNA increase with age, but until now no one knew whether this is a result of aging or a cause of aging. New research findings now indicate that the latter is the case.

World's Oldest Woman Had Normal Brain...
A 115-year-old woman who remained mentally alert throughout her life had an essentially normal brain, with little or no evidence of Alzheimer's disease, according to a study in the August issue of Neurobiology of Aging.

Resveratrol, Found In Red Wine, Wards Off Effects Of Age On Heart, Bones, Eyes And Muscle...
Scientists have found that the compound resveratrol -- found in red wine and grape skin -- slows age-related deterioration and functional decline of mice on a standard diet, but does not increase longevity when started at middle age. A major finding of the study reported today is that resveratrol prevented age-related and obesity-related cardiovascular functional decline in the mice as determined by several parameters. Total cholesterol was significantly reduced in 22-month-old non-obese mice after 10 months of resveratrol treatment, although triglyceride levels had only a slight, non-significant trend toward a decrease. Further, the aortas of 18-month-old obese and non-obese mice treated with resveratrol functioned significantly better than untreated mice. Resveratrol also moderated inflammation in the heart.
In addition to cardiovascular function, the scientists found resveratrol to have a variety of positive effects on other age-related problems in mice.

Can you dramatically extend your health span with diet and supplementation? ...
Could the right diet along with supplementation possibly take 20 years off the biological age of your brain, make middle aged cells function much younger, improve memory & cognitive performance, double your energy and dramatically reduce your chances of getting cardiovascular disease, cancer, type 2 diabetes, and neurological conditions? Too good to be true... If research done on mice extends to humans, which we feel it does, then perhaps yes... In fact, recent studies on humans have already been done with amazing results.

See why I consider Protandim the most important single product you can take to slow aging.

The sun, suncreens and how to protect yourself the way nature intended...

As I have grown up sunscreens have become extremely popular as doctors have told people, the sun is our enemy. While it is true, a person should not go out at the beginning of summer and expose themselves to a ton of sun in one sitting and cause severe burns, it is also true that sunscreens are not very good at protecting you from what really matters most. I have not used sun screens for over 10 years when I discovered that they block the absorption of vitamin D, which protects our skin from radiation damage, and as I learned that if you supplement with the right nutrients, your skin is naturally resistant to burning, all on it's own, the way nature intended. The sun has been around a lot longer than the sunscreen companies or the people who fear it. Our bodies are designed to use the rays of the sun to give us ideal health and wellness, just as it is crucial for the plants and animals that bathe in it everyday. Be prudent and don't expose yourself too quickly if you are not conditioned yet from moderate exposure. Look at natural options that have side benefits like Grape Seed Extract. Grape Seed Extract is a very broad-spectrum supplement. It is a powerful antioxidant against diverse types of free radicals; not only has it been shown to help keep you from burning, but it can also keep sun-induced papillomas from turning into carcinomas.
Consider doing what I do and make sure you have lots of vitamin D, A & C, everyday and use supplements like Grape Seed Extract, Green Tea Extract, Astaxanthin, as these have been shown to actually protect the skin from both UVA & UVB radiation and DNA damage caused by severe sunburn and still allow vitamin D production, which is so critical for so many health conditions.

cw

Most Sunscreens Fail to Protect...
The simple rule of sunscreen — the higher the SPF and the thicker the slather, the better — has come under doubt.
The Environmental Working Group (EWG), a Washington-based research group and habitual gadfly to the business world, has found that 4 out of 5 of the nearly 1,000 sunscreen lotions analyzed offer inadequate protection from the sun or contain harmful chemicals. The biggest offenders, the EWG said, are the industry leaders: Coppertone, Banana Boat and Neutrogena.
While 3 out of 3 industry leaders are rather upset with the EWG report, and while some dermatologists criticize it for hyperbole, the report does underscore several long-standing health concerns.

Sun avoidance will increase incidence of cancers overall ...
Fry and Verne in their editorial concluded that sunscreens may create a false sense of security and encourage over-exposure to the sun. Sunscreens should not be relied on to prevent melanoma. Typical sunscreens only weakly absorb ultraviolet A light, which is 97% of ultraviolet radiation and is nearly as carcinogenic as ultraviolet B light. The typical protection factor for ultraviolet A is 2-4 for chemical sunscreens. Absorption of ultraviolet A is not included in calculation of the sun protection factor.
The authors' advice to avoid the sun would not be the best strategy for reducing overall incidence of cancer. Recommending moderate exposure to the sun would be more prudent.

Astaxanthin: The Little-Known Miracle Nutrient for Inflammation, Anti-Aging, Athletic Endurance and More ...
Every once in a very great while, I discover a natural medicine so astonishing that I feel compelled to share it with you. The verb "discover" is actually not to my credit, by the way; Mother Nature created this natural medicine eons ago, and it's been present in trace amounts in aquatic ecosystems for over a billion years. In this article, I'm going to reveal the name of this natural medicine, what health benefits it provides to us, and how to get some right now. But first, before revealing the name, I want to share some of the numerous health benefits with you so you get the full picture of just how significant this substance can be in enhancing your health.

Broad-Spectrum Effects of Grape Seed Extract...
Grapevines are living pharmacies. Each part of the plant creates its own medicinal agents. Leaves, for example, make their own sunscreen.9 Grapes make their own pesticide.9 Grapes and grape leaves make their own fungicide.10 As fascinating as this is, even more interesting is that humans can benefit from these natural nutraceuticals as much as the plants. Grapevines contain dozens of different phytocompounds that have different effects on different areas of the human body. The most studied of these phytocompounds are quercetin, resveratrol, proanthocyanidins (from seeds), and anthocyanins (which give purple and red grapes their color). All of these phytocompounds are classified as polyphenols.
The seeds of grapes contain many good things. First are the antioxidants, more rightly called super-antioxidants. They’re not only more powerful than standard antioxidants like vitamin E, but also more diverse. The factors contained in grape seed go way beyond the ordinary. Running the gambit from vaporizing the effects of environmental stress to intercepting free radicals created by food, the compounds in grape seed extract provide broad-spectrum antioxidant protection.
It doesn’t end there, however. Scientific studies document multiple effects, including antibiotic, anti-tumor, anti-diabetic, anti-ulcer, pro-heart and arteries, and anti-brain aging.

A Prescription for Disaster...

You are being bombarded by ads on TV to try new drugs on a daily basis. Direct to consumer advertising by drug companies is working. People see an ad for pain relief, they're in pain, so they go to their doctor and request the drug. Vioxx was an example of this. What was the result of that new drug to the trusting public... In August 2004, Dr. David J. Graham, a clinical physician working in the FDA Drug Center’s Office of Drug Safety, published a report suggesting that the estimated 93 million prescriptions written for Vioxx may have contributed to 27,785 heart attacks and deaths between 1999 and 2003. A year later, Graham told the Senate Finance Committee that his agency's earlier projection that Vioxx may have caused roughly 28,000 heart attacks or sudden cardiac deaths was "an extremely conservative estimate." Graham restated that the number of deaths alone may have been as many as 55,000.

How safe are new drugs? How well are they tested? How does your doctor get informed of these new drug?

Take a few moments and watch just a portion of a new documentary called A Prescription for Disaster, By Gary Null, PHD. If you want to watch the whole 90 minutes, reply back and I will send them to you.

Why you need to increase your levels of broccoli, lycopene, almonds, dark chocolate, watermelon, vitamin D and eat properly if your are pregnant...

HealthBlogger is dedicated to giving you the latest news and studies that support the use of alternative supplements and diet in supporting your health and well being and to help you use natural alternatives to drugs, if that is your desire.
We have recently changed our focus on Epigenetics, the science that shows that we can alter our genetic destiny with foods and supplements by turning on or off, the genes that effect our health and predispose us to disease.

In this HealthBlogger we see that Lycopene, a red colored phytonutrient in fruits and veggies, may be as good as Statins for cardiovascular health. Also, that a few servings of broccoli a week may lower your chances of getting some forms of cancer. We see that watermelon may have Viagra effects on libido for men. Almonds are not only a great source of fiber, protein and healthy fats, but also improves your beneficial intestinal bacteria. We see new possible benefits for heart failure treatment with vitamin D, how the diet of pregnant women effects the health of their children as they age, and how western medicine failed one of my hero's, Tim Russert.

Enjoy the articles and stay healthy.... It's always your choice.

cw

Lycopene as effective as statins for artery health: rabbit study...
Supplements of the lycopene, the carotenoid that give tomatoes their red colour, may be as effective as statins to reduce the formation of plaques in the arteries that cause atherosclerosis, says a new study with rabbits. The animals fed a high-fat diet and supplemented with lycopene or fluvastatin had improved levels of these biomarkers, and the lycopene of both doses was better than the statin.

Study shows how broccoli fights cancer ...
Just a few more portions of broccoli each week may protect men from prostate cancer, British researchers reported on Wednesday. The researchers believe a chemical in the food sparks hundreds of genetic changes, activating some genes that fight cancer and switching off others that fuel tumors, said Richard Mithen, a biologist at Britain's Institute of Food Research.

Watermelon May Have Viagra-effect...
A cold slice of watermelon has long been a Fourth of July holiday staple. But according to recent studies, the juicy fruit may be better suited for Valentine’s Day. That’s because scientists say watermelon has ingredients that deliver Viagra-like effects to the body’s blood vessels and may even increase libido.

Prebiotic Potential Of Almonds...
Almonds, as well as being high in vitamin E and other minerals, are also thought to have other health benefits, such as reducing cholesterol. Recently published work by the Institute of Food Research has identified potential prebiotic properties of almonds that could help improve our digestive health by increasing levels of beneficial gut bacteria.

Western Medicine Fails Tim Russert...
The shocking death of Tim Russert last Friday has left an entire nation wondering what happened. He was a model patient, doing everything his doctors asked. All major media have run articles trying to explain the nuances and difficulties in treating coronary artery disease. These articles find little fault in Russert's care, trying to create the idea that his heart attack was just too hard to predict and that all that could have been done for him was done. I beg to differ. His death represents the failure of standard medical care to produce a positive result – an occurrence that is all too common in today's world.

Cheap, Processed Chocolate Has Virtually No Health Benefits Due to Lack of Flavanols ...
People should not be misled into believing that the typical chocolate bar is good for heart health, according to an editorial published in the influential medical journal Lancet, because most processed chocolate bars contain very low amounts of the nutrient that makes chocolate good for you.

Poor Diet During Pregnancy May Have Long Term Impact On Child's Health, Study Suggests...
Mothers who eat an unhealthy diet during pregnancy may be putting their children at risk of developing long term, irreversible health issues including obesity, raised levels of cholesterol and blood sugar, according to new research(1). The study, carried out in rats and funded by the Wellcome Trust, suggests that the effect is even more pronounced in female offspring.

Vitamin D: New Way To Treat Heart Failure?...
Strong bones, a healthy immune system, protection against some types of cancer: Recent studies suggest there’s yet another item for the expanding list of Vitamin D benefits. Vitamin D, “the sunshine vitamin,” keeps the heart, the body’s long-distance runner, fit for life’s demands.
