Eating Processed Meats, but Not Unprocessed Red Meats, May Raise Risk of Heart Disease and Diabetes, Study Finds...
In a new study, researchers from the Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH) have found that eating processed meat, such as bacon, sausage or processed deli meats, was associated with a 42% higher risk of heart disease and a 19% higher risk of type 2 diabetes. In contrast, the researchers did not find any higher risk of heart disease or diabetes among individuals eating unprocessed red meat, such as from beef, pork, or lamb. This work is the first systematic review and meta-analysis of the worldwide evidence for how eating unprocessed red meat and processed meat relates to risk of cardiovascular diseases and diabetes.

Whenever possible, never eat carbs by themselves as snacks...

I have 2 questions this week that I will try to answer here today.

Question 1...
Reviewing the glycemic index... I realize that the ideal is to keep foods below the 50-55 range. However, if you have a meal that, let's say, contains 3 items with individual index scores of 75, 50, 25, does the average score on the plate of "50" count? Meaning, do the scores cancel each other out and form an average score or - Dave, nice try, keep everything below 50?

Answer: The Glycemic Index is a numerical system of measuring how fast a carbohydrate triggers a rise in circulating blood sugar - the higher the number, the greater the blood sugar response. A low Glycemic index food will cause a small rise. A high Glycemic Index food will trigger a dramatic spike of insulin which can then produce hypoglycemia and eventually diabetes if allowed to continue. There is also a thing called Glycemic Load, which just means that a given score becomes worse based on how MUCH you eat of that food. i.e. 1 hamburger bun has a 61 GL, 2 hamburger buns have the same GL of 61 but twice the Glycemic Load.
Mixing proteins, fats, and carbs together does moderate the absorption of the sugars which then lower it's glycemic load, but it is not so exact as to work the way you would like to think it could. General rule: never eat carbs, even fruits, by themselves if you want to stay thin, especially if you are a hypoglycemic. Hypoglycemia triggers the release of cortisol (which increases fat storage). Have your carbs with some protein and fat, and the lower you keep the glycemic number, the better. When you snack, think proteins. They tell your body to burn fats rather than to store them.

Question 2...
Reviewing Vitamin D, I have been taking about 4200 units of D3 a day not including any sun exposure. I saw your article now showing that 4000-10000 is recommended. Should I increase the amount to 6,000 or more ( not including sun )?  Wondering if because I am a larger than the average sized male, should I be taking more to match my frame?

Answer: According to The Vitamin D Council, there is no way to know for certain until you get a 25-hydroxy vitamin D test, also called a 25(OH)D. Levels should be above 50 ng/ml (125 nmol/L) year-round, in both children and adults. Thanks to Bruce Hollis, Robert Heaney, Neil Binkley, and others, we now know the minimal acceptable level. These experts also have found in general about 2, 000 IU's for kids and 4,000 to 8,000 IU's of daily supplementation will gradually get your levels to optimal levels. If you have a chronic illness, and never get any sun at all, 10,000 IU's is now recommended by many experts. I take 10,000 IU's a day every day, year around and I walk 1 hour a day, no sun screen. Toxicity is unknown at that level, as a person working in the sun without sunscreen would get over 30,000 IU a day. Also, as your skin darkens, your absorption lessens.

Enjoy this weeks information and remember... You are never too old to become younger.

Over A Million Men Overdiagnosed for Prostate Cancer, Treated Unnecessarily...
(NaturalNews) Since the prostate antigen screening test (PSA) began being widely used about 23 years ago, doctors have lauded its ability to detect prostate cancer at a very early stage. In fact, PSA testing has resulted in over a million additional men being diagnosed and treated for prostate cancer. The problem is, according to new research just published online in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, most of these cases were overdiagnosed and subjected men to treatment they didn't need.

Low vitamin D again linked to higher mortality...
Low blood levels of vitamin D have again been linked to lower survival in the elderly – a study which strengthens calls to confirm if vitamin D supplements could offer protection. Writing in the journal Clinical Endocrinology, scientists from the Netherlands, Austria, and the US report that low blood levels of the sunshine vitamin are associated with increased risk of all-cause mortality, and mortality from heart disease. “Our results provide a rationale for future studies to test whether vitamin D supplementation reduces mortality and/or cardiovascular diseases in persons with vitamin D deficiency,” wrote the researchers, led by Stefan Pilz from the Medical University of Graz in Austria - “These studies are urgently needed to answer the question whether vitamin D deficiency is a cause or a consequence of a poor health status,” they added.

Calorie Restriction: Scientists Take Important Step Toward 'Fountain of Youth'...
Going back for a second dessert after your holiday meal might not be the best strategy for living a long, cancer-free life say researchers from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. That's because they've shown exactly how restricted calorie diets -- specifically in the form of restricted glucose -- help human cells live longer.

Anti-Depression "Stone Age" Remedy...
Today we're peeking into the brain of a psychologist at the University of Kansas who's looking back to humanity's Paleolithic past for answers to one of society's most secretive yet omnipresent problems ... and that is depression. Dr. Stephen Ilardi argues that depression is not a mental-chemical problem...requiring a prescription of say the mood uplifting pill du jour ... Lexepro.
Rather that depression is caused by the way contemporary society forces us to live our lives. Watch the "Watercooler Diaries" now for more.

More Bad News for Paxil: New Study Says Antidepressant Drugs Next to Worthless...

Low-Carb Diet Effective at Lowering Blood Pressure...
In a head-to-head comparison, two popular weight loss methods proved equally effective at helping participants lose significant amounts of weight. But, in a surprising twist, a low-carbohydrate diet proved better at lowering blood pressure than the weight-loss drug orlistat, according to researchers at Veterans Affairs Medical Center and Duke University Medical Center.

Magnesium supplements may boost lung health for asthmatics...
Daily supplements of magnesium may improve lung function in asthmatics, and improve their quality of life, says a new study from America.
Measures of lung capacity increased by about 6 per cent during six months of magnesium supplementation, and improvements were also observed in the bronchial response to methacholine, a chemical that produces constriction of the lungs, according to findings published in the Journal of Asthma.
“Although there is conflicting research regarding magnesium supplementation and asthma outcomes, this study adds to the body of research that shows a beneficial response to magnesium supplementation in people who have mild to moderate asthma,” wrote researchers, led by Alexandra Kazaks from Bastyr University in Kenmore, Washington State.

Curcumin Can Kill Tumor Cells... VIDEO
Curcumin, a compound found in the Indian spice tumeric that gives curry powder its yellow color, killed esophageal cancer cells in a lab via an unexpected cell-death mechanism that did not include aptosis or cell suicide. Researchers found that the compound started killing cancer cells within 24 hours and the cells began to digest themselves. The study was conducted at University College Cork in Ireland and appears in the British Journal of Cancer.

Make 6 easy changes this week and feel great...

Health is earned, it is not a right. It depends on what you do most of the time. You really are what you eat, drink, breathe, and even what you think. Here is how Dr. Deepak Chopra, M.D., describes what goes on in human biology over time, from one of his many lectures.

"The physical bodies that you're using to sit on these chairs, for example, aren't the ones that you walked in with a little while ago. Even with one breath you take in 10 to the power of 22 atoms. An astronomical amount of raw material that ends up as your heart, brain and kidney cells, your neurons, your DNA. With each breath you breathe out 10 to the power of 22 atoms. It's an astronomical amount of raw materials that is coming from every bit of your body. You are literally breathing out bits and pieces of your brain tissue and heart and kidney. Actually, technically speaking, we are intimately sharing our organs with each other all the time. The American poet Walt Whitman said, "Every atom belonging to you as well belongs to me." And this isn't a metaphorical statement at all. "Every atom belonging to you as well belongs to me." I can't even call my personal body my own. And I try calling everything else my own. I can't even claim a copyright on my own physical body. Right this moment in your body you have a million atoms that were once in the body of Christ. Based on radioactive isotope studies and mathematical computations it can easily be shown that in this moment of your existence you have a million atoms that were once in the body of Christ, in the body of Gautama Buddha or Leonardo Da Vinci or Michelangelo or Mr. Saddam Hussein. You can't separate yourself from anything physically or anybody that has ever existed. In just the last 3 weeks, a quadrillion atoms, 10 to the power of 15 atoms have gone through your body that have gone through the body of every other species on this planet. And if you do radioactive isotope studies which have been done very elegantly, you can prove beyond a shadow of doubt that you replace 98% of all the atoms in your body in less than one year. You make a new liver every 6 weeks, new skin once a month, a new stomach lining every 5 days, a new skeleton - it seems so hard and solid, but the skeleton you have now you didn't have three months ago. Even the brain cells that you think with as carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen and oxygen, as those basic elements, they weren't there one year ago. And the DNA that holds memories of millions of years of evolutionary time, in fact hundreds of millions of years; the actual raw material of it comes and goes every six weeks. Those atoms drift in and out like migratory birds every six weeks.
And if you want to be a real stickler about it and account for the last atom and every little sinew and collagen and cartilage, then in less than two and a half years you replace every atom in your body down to the last single atom.
So if you think you are your material body then you certainly have a dilemma. Which one are you talking about? The 1991 model is not the same as the 1990 model or even the one from a few months ago."

So, here are just 6 easy changes you COULD make this week, that would make a world of difference to your health. Try it for a week and see.

1. Drink one cup of coffee when you wake up, then switch to strong green tea after that. Drink it liberally.
2. Eat a big breakfast with protein, some veggies or a little fruit. i.e. An omelet, fresh fruit, low fat cottage cheese.
3. Have a small hand full of raw nuts between breakfast and lunch, and between lunch and dinner, every day. i.e. Raw almonds, walnuts, brazil, or macadamias.
4. Switch to Stevia or local organic raw honey as your only sweetener.
5. Eat before 7 pm and have 4 oz of meat, 1 cup of colorful veggies w/ real butter, or a small salad with lots of color, with a small amount of fresh fruit, nothing packaged or canned.
6. Take a half an hour walk before dinner, or whenever you can fit it in.

If you can fit in a 7th, you know I would recommend a good multi or a super food, examples listed after this weeks articles, video clips, and studies.

Remember, you are never too old to become younger.

Your Genes Remember a Sugar Hit...
Human genes remember a sugar hit for two weeks. What’s more, prolonged poor eating habits could be capable of permanently altering your DNA.
A team studying the impact of diet on heart tissue found that cells showed the effects of a single sugar hit for 14 days. The cells switched off genetic controls designed to protect the body against diabetes and heart disease. Regular poor eating could amplify the effect, with genetic damage lasting months or years, and potentially passing through bloodlines.

White Rye Bread Healthier Than Whole Wheat?...
Wholegrain bread is good and good for you, as most people know. But it is not only the fiber-rich bran, the outer shell of the grain, that is healthful. On the contrary, research at the Lund University Faculty of Engineering shows that bread baked with white rye flour, which is flour made from the inner, white part of the rye kernel, leads to better insulin and blood sugar levels compared with wheat bread with rye bran. White rye flour thus leads to much better values than both regular wheat flour and rye bran. At the same time, much of the bread that is sold in stores today in most countries is in fact baked with wheat flour and bran from various grains.

Cocktail of five vitamins may give cancer patients an extra two years...
Cancer patients with terminal disease who take a daily cocktail of vitamins could extend their lives by two years or even longer, claim researchers.
Three out of four in a pilot study survived an average of five months longer than the expected one year, and some were still alive three years after treatment started. Dr Bob Lister, co-author of the study by British and Danish researchers, said the results were similar to the survival gains from new drugs and in some cases better.
During the nine-year period, the patients were treated with coenzyme Q10 - a vitamin-like compound-essential for producing energy made naturally in the body - and six other antioxidants including vitamins A, C and E, selenium, folic acid, and beta carotene (which was not given to lung cancer patients for safety reasons). The patients were predicted to live for an average of 12 months, but 76 per cent lived an average of five months longer.
The doses of the supplements, supplied by manufacturers Pharma Nord, were large but were within recommended safety limits, said Dr Lister.
In addition, patients received small amounts of other nutrients including fish oil and B vitamins.

Whenever possible, think prevention and use nutraceuticals as your first choice...

Nutrigenomics is the science that shows how foods and nutrients control our genes and how they express either optimal health or degenerative disease. This is a major breakthrough and it puts us in control of our genes. We are no longer victims of our parents genetic patterns with no power to alter our state of health as we grow older.
There is a right kind of diet that works with our genes that keeps us healthy and lowers inflammation levels. The more you move your eating patterns to a Hunter/Gatherer diet, the better you will feel. Try it for a week or two and see for yourself. Also, there are nutrients and supplements that work with your body that have side benefits, rather than side effects. Learn to seek those out first and use drugs as a last resort. Drugs can be life savers, but I do not believe they should be the first place you look.
In this weeks HealthBlogger, I highlight a few of these important nutraceuticals, and the studies that support their use. Work with your doctor and always insist that you would prefer to try these approaches first, or seek out someone to work with you and your doctor who knows a Nutrigenic approach to your health issue.
Enjoy this weeks selections and remember...

New field of nutrigenomics reveals how what you eat now can prevent future disease...

(NaturalNews) Kansas State University (K-State) researchers have joined a growing number of scientists who say a relatively new medical field known as nutrigenomics could change the future of public health forever. How? By tailoring strategies to prevent diseases before they can happen -- diseases that might otherwise be in a person's future because of his or her genetic makeup.

Researchers Recommend Pregnant Women Take 4,000 IU Vitamin D a Day...

Taking vitamin D supplements during pregnancy is not only safe for mother and baby, but also can prevent preterm labor/births and infections, according to results of a randomized controlled study to be presented at the Pediatric Academic Societies (PAS) annual meeting in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

Diabetic? Protect Your Kidneys with Curcumin...

Curcumin is the active ingredient in the yellow Indian spice turmeric, and research shows it can protect your kidneys from the damage caused by diabetes, the leading cause of kidney failure.

Epigenetic' Concepts Offer New Approach to Degenerative Disease...

“This pilot study provides for the first time evidence that a single green tea catechin, EGCG, can increase fat oxidation in obese men, at least within 2 h after meal intake. Within this postprandial phase, EGCG is equipotent with caffeine with regard to fat oxidation,” wrote the authors, led by Frank Thielecke from DSM Nutritional Products.
