Help the body control inflammation and you age gracefully and lower your chance for chronic disease...

Inflammation is the body’s response to cellular injury. It is a natural process that has both harmful effects as well as beneficial ones. Without this process our bodies could not survive. Inflammation represents a protective response designed to rid the body of the initial cause of cell injury and the consequences of that injury. Cell injury may occur due to trauma, genetic defects, physical and chemical agents, tissue necrosis, foreign bodies, immune reactions, and infections, as well as nutritional deficiencies, especially anti-oxidants.

We don't think much about the process until we get sick or when we get old and it's effects become more obvious. As a way to bring your awareness of the aging process closer to home, please watch this short video.
Ageing Process in 40 seconds - Amazing video depiction.

What you consume in the way of food and drink, as well as what supplements you decide to take or not take, can have a profound effect in lowering inflammation and aiding the body to heal from it's process.
An anti-aging, anti-inflammatory program would include adopting a diet closer to our ancestors, eliminating modern foods that are not natural to our genetic makeup. Most anti-aging experts recommend additional supplementation.

All the benefits of the articles and studies I have listed in this week's HealthBlogger can be achieved by adopting the following program.

The Ideal Diet - Not only an anti-inflammatory diet, it's what our ancestors ate.

Follow The Glycemic Index - The Glycemic Index is a numerical system of measuring how fast a carbohydrate triggers a rise in circulating blood sugar - the higher the number, the greater the blood sugar response.

NSI Synergy CardioLift® Multi-Vitamin - A complete multi with therapeutic levels of phytonutrients that can turn good genes on and bad genes off.

Omega-3 EPA and DHA - Our diet contains too high of levels of Omega 6's, which come from vegetable oils and processed food and are pro-inflammatory. Omega 3's correct this imbalance and are anti-inflammatory in nature.

Nattokinase - Women have low levels of heart disease compared to men during their child bearing years. This is because monthly menstruation keeps blood viscosity levels at optimal levels. Studies show that as many as 95% of all heart attacks could be prevented by keeping the blood thin and free from blood clots.

I have been using and recommending NSI formulated supplements like the ones above for many years. I also formulate my own line.
NSI was founded with the goal of helping to educate health-conscious consumers about the importance and benefits of proper nutritional supplementation. NSI's Synergy line of multi-vitamins offers a superior value compared to mass-marketed brands and contains optimal forms and amounts of nutrients.
They are formulated by medical doctors who believe in prevention and like me, keep up with the latest research in nutritional science.
Why NSI Synergy Multi-Vitamins? - Video

Enjoy this weeks studies and articles and begin a preventative lifestyle program as you would an insurance program for your car our house. It makes sense, and there is valid science behind it.

Omega-3 Fish Oils Reduce Mortality from All Causes ...
Fish oils—omega-3 fish oils, to be exact—are highly beneficial to human beings: they’re among our hearts’ best friends (see the sidebar). Ever since this was first surmised, in the 1970s, the evidence for the role of these fish oils in protecting us from cardiovascular disease—and from other diseases as well, including dementia, the metabolic syndrome, and perhaps cancer—has continued to mount. The medical literature now contains thousands of papers dealing with innumerable aspects of the effects of omega-3 fatty acids (which are components of the fish oils) on human physiology, especially as it pertains to cardiovascular disease.

Not So Sweet: Over-consumption Of Sugar Linked To Aging...
We know that lifespan can be extended in animals by restricting calories such as sugar intake. Now, according to a study published in the journal PLoS Genetics, Université de Montréal scientists have discovered that it's not sugar itself that is important in this process but the ability of cells to sense its presence.
The research team found that the lifespan of yeast cells increased when glucose was decreased from their diet. They then asked whether the increase in lifespan was due to cells decreasing their ability to produce energy or to the decrease in signal to the cells by the glucose sensor.

The Truth about MSG, Monosodium Glutamate and NutraSweet, Aspartic Acid, found in commercial foods... - A VIDEO YOU MUST SEE... DON'T MISS THIS...
What effects does MSG have on diet, obesity, health and food cravings? Because MSG is absorbed very quickly in the gastrointestinal tract (unlike glutamic acid-containing proteins in foods), MSG could spike blood plasma levels of glutamate. Glutamic acid is in a class of chemicals known as excitotoxins, high levels of which have been shown in animal studies to cause damage to areas of the brain unprotected by the blood-brain barrier and that a variety of chronic diseases can arise out of this neurotoxicity.

Processed Meats Raise Leukemia Risk, Vegetables Lower It...
(NaturalNews) A diet high in cured meats may lead to a 74 percent higher risk of childhood leukemia, according to a study conducted by researchers from the Harvard School of Public Health and published in the journal BMC Cancer. Researchers examined the dietary habits and leukemia rates among 515 Taiwanese children and youths between the ages of 2 and 20. A total of 145 leukemia patients were included in the study, and each was compared with two healthy participants of the same age and sex. The scientists used detailed dietary questionnaires to determine participants' intake of cured meats including bacon, ham, hot dogs, dried salted duck, salted fish and Chinese sausage. For leukemia patients, cured meat intake was calculated for the time period before the onset of the disease; for healthy patients, intake was calculated for the beginning of the study.

Anti-Vitamin C Study Seriously Flawed and Misleading ...
(NaturalNews) A recent study published in Cancer Research (2008; 68:8031-8038) warned that high doses of vitamin C could harm cancer patients by making chemotherapy drugs ineffective. But now a detailed report in the current issue of the journal Alternative and Complementary Therapies explains that the anti-vitamin C study was not only flawed but didn't actually use a form of vitamin C used in humans. In the current Alternative and Complementary Therapies Medical Journal Watch column, nutrition expert Jack Challem has dissected, step by step, the inaccuracies in the Cancer Research study which concluded vitamin C given to mice or cultured cells treated with common anti-cancer chemotherapy agents hampered those drugs' anti-tumor effects. In a statement to the media, Challem pointed to two main problems with the study. First, the researchers did not use vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid. Instead, they used an oxidized form of vitamin C known as dehydroascorbic acid -- a compound that is not used as a dietary supplement in people.

Cocktail of Pharmaceuticals Found in the Fish Caught Near Major U.S. Cities ...
(NaturalNews) Pharmaceutical pollution is out of control, polluting the waterways of our world to such a disturbing degree that now even the fish are carrying detectable levels of pharmaceuticals in their own bodies! A study conducted by Baylor University researcher Bryan Brooks, and published in Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry, examined fish caught near Phoenix, Dallas, Chicago, Philadelphia and Orlando, testing them for residues of pharmaceuticals. And what did the results show? That fish are contaminated with a chemical cocktail of prescription medications!

Ginkgo Reduces Brain Damage from Stroke by 50 Percent...
(NaturalNews) Ginkgo biloba extract may reduce the brain damage and neurobehavioral dysfunction from a stroke by 50 percent, according to a study conducted by researchers from Johns Hopkins Institutions and published in the journal Stroke. "Our results suggest that some element or elements in ginkgo actually protect brain cells during stroke," researcher Sylvain Dore said. " If further work confirms what we've seen, we could theoretically recommend a daily regimen of ginkgo to people at high risk of stroke as a preventive measure against brain damage."

Pinpointing Role Of Insulin On Glucagon Levels...
Researchers at the Joslin Diabetes Center have shown for the first time that insulin plays a key role in suppressing levels of glucagon, a hormone involved in carbohydrate metabolism and regulating blood glucose levels.

Pomegranate’s anti-inflammatory effects strengthened...
A polyphenol-rich pomegranate extract may reduce inflammation, and positively effect chronic disease risk, according to results of a new cell study from the US.
Findings published in the open access Journal of Inflammation suggest that a polyphenol-rich pomegranate fruit extract (POMx) acts by inhibiting the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines at a gene expression level.

Natto enzyme may boost heart health in at-risk people...
Nattokinase, an enzyme extracted from fermented soy, may reduce levels of compounds linked to blood clotting, and cut the risk of heart disease in people at-risk of the disease, suggests new research from Taiwan. After two months of supplementation, the researchers noted that levels of fibrinogen, factor VII, and factor VIII had fallen by 9, 14, and 17 per cent, respectively, in the healthy individuals; by 7, 13, and 19 per cent, respectively, in the CVD risk group; and 10, 7, and 19, respectively, in the dialysis patients.

You are what your mother eats: High GI diets may give obese kids...
Snacking on foods with a high glycaemic index like white bread and chocolate during the later stages of pregnancy may increase the likelihood of obesity in the offspring, says a new study.
High GI snack diets during the third trimester of pregnancy were associated with heavier birth weight in the offspring, and a higher rate of growth of the new-borns, suggests new research with sheep published in the British Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

Walnuts May Prevent Breast Cancer...
Walnut consumption may provide the body with essential omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants and phytosterols that reduce the risk of breast cancer, according to a study presented at the American Association for Cancer Research 100th Annual Meeting 2009.
"Walnuts are better than cookies, french fries or potato chips when you need a snack," said Hardman. "We know that a healthy diet overall prevents all manner of chronic diseases."

Vitamin D levels linked to asthma severity...
Not getting enough vitamin D may increase asthma severity in children, a new study indicates. Researchers looked at 616 children with asthma. Each child was assessed for allergies, lung function and vitamin D levels. The study found that children with low vitamin D levels were significantly more likely to have been hospitalised for asthma in the previous year and were more likely to have regularly used inhaled asthma medication. Those children were also more likely to be dust-mite sensitive. “This study suggests that there may be added health benefits to vitamin D supplementation,” the researchers said.

Resveratrol Found to Treat Fatty Liver Disease...
(NaturalNews) The naturally occurring plant chemical resveratrol -- made famous for its role in the health benefits of red wine -- may not only prevent but even reverse the dangerous buildup of fat in the liver caused by alcohol abuse." Our study suggests that resveratrol may serve as a promising agent for preventing or treating human alcoholic fatty liver disease," the researchers from the University of South Florida Health Sciences Center in Tampa wrote in the American Journal of Physiology -- Gastrointestinal and Live Physiology.

Antioxidant Found In Berries, Other Foods Prevents UV Skin Damage That Leads To Wrinkles...
Using a topical application of the antioxidant ellagic acid, researchers at Hallym University in the Republic of Korea markedly prevented collagen destruction and inflammatory response – major causes of wrinkles -- in both human skin cells and the sensitive skin of hairless mice following continuing exposure to UV-B, the sun's skin-damaging ultraviolet radioactive rays.

What ever happened to "First Do No Harm"?

A long long time ago, the Father of medicine formed the basic principals of what should be the focus of medical science today...
"Hippocrates (460-377 BC), a Greek physician, is traditionally acknowledged as the “Father of Medicine”. The Hippocratic Oath was formulated in the 4th century BC at the time when Hippocrates was establishing medicine as a science, raising it from its primitive state. Though the oath was not universally accepted by ancient physicians, medical practice began to conform to conditions envisaged by the document at the end of the ancient times."
Here is one of the original lines often quoted from that oath... "I will apply dietetic measures for the benefit of the sick according to my ability and judgment; I will keep them from harm and injustice."

Originally, doctors taught good nutrition, used herbal medicine, and felt that doing no harm was of primary importance above all things. Boy, have things changed.

For many years now, doctors have been reported as the 3rd leading cause of death in America, according to the AMA's own annual reports, second only to heart disease and cancer.

This is where I get my passion to share natural ways to improve one's health that usually also result in side benefits rather than side effects.
I agree with people like Thomas Edison who was quoted as saying...
"The doctor of the future will prescribe no drugs, but will interest his patients in the care and nutrition of the human frame and in the cause and prevention of disease."
Voltaire also may have been on to something when he said...
"Doctors give drugs of which they know little, into bodies of which they know less, for diseases of which they know nothing at all."

This week I had 1 question that I can answer here on HealthBlogger...

Question from L. W. - Prineville, OR...

Do you have any recommendations for SEVERE allergies? My husband just got hammered this weekend to the point he couldn't go out of the house yesterday without sneezing and blowing his head off. He’s absolutely miserable. Never has had it this bad before. Any histamine help out there? Thoughts?

Answer... Your husband most likely is allergic to a tree as they bloom first, next comes grasses and flowers. Many people here have problems with juniper which produces a fine yellow dust when it blooms. Either way, the best approach naturally is to block the response and then use homeopathic antigen therapy. See link below...http://www.cwiechert.com/allergies.html

Possible 75% cancer mortality reduction with Vitamin D...
In a new study, researchers at the Moores Cancer Center and Department of Family and Preventive Medicine, UC San Diego used a complex computer prediction model to determine that intake of vitamin D3 and calcium would prevent 58,000 new cases of breast cancer and 49,000 new cases of colorectal cancer annually in the US and Canada. The researchers model also predicted that 75% of deaths from these cancers could be prevented with adequate intake of vitamin D3 and calcium. Dr. Cedric Garland, UCSD School of Medicine, lead researcher on the study discusses the implications of this finding and the proposed actions.

Drink Green Tea For Healthy Teeth And Gums...
With origins dating back over 4,000 years, green tea has long been a popular beverage in Asian culture, and is increasingly gaining popularity in the United States. And while ancient Chinese and Japanese medicine believed green tea consumption could cure disease and heal wounds, recent scientific studies are beginning to establish the potential health benefits of drinking green tea, especially in weight loss, heart health, and cancer prevention.

Dispel the Myths: High Cholesterol is Not to Blame for Heart Disease ...
(NaturalNews) Most people react to being told they have high cholesterol in the same way they would if they were told they have cancer. Somehow the idea of having high cholesterol can strike deep fear into the heart of a person. After all, doesn't a high cholesterol reading mean you are a walking heart attack waiting to happen? That's what we've been told for decades by the media and the medical profession, but more recently evidence is coming to light that says high cholesterol may not be an accurate predictor of heart attack. This may come as a shock to anyone who has followed the idea that lowering your cholesterol will prevent heart disease. In fact, such ideas prevent people from looking at the big picture: there are many risk factors associated with heart disease, and putting all of the blame on cholesterol causes people to ignore other more prevalent factors.

A Big Fat Fib: Low-Fat is Not the Answer ...
(NaturalNews) It all started a few decades ago, when well-known health experts began recommending that people eliminate fat from their diets. A lot of people jumped on the no-fat train because some studies at the time seemed to point to fat as the villain of our modern diet. It soon became obvious to health professionals that completely eliminating fat was not any kind of solution. First of all, most people couldn`t stay on this type of extreme diet for any length of time. Secondly, health problems like cancer, infection, fatigue and depression ran rampant when fat was eliminated.

Vitamin K and prostate cancer – study supports benefits...
An improved vitamin K2 status may reduce the risk of prostate cancer, suggest results from German scientists that build the science linking the vitamin to improved prostate health.
Scientists from the German Cancer Research Center report that an improved status of the vitamin was linked to a lower risk of both advanced-stage prostate cancer and high-grade prostate cancer.

Resveratrol is "Nature's Medicine" for Cancer, Heart Disease and Much More ...
(NaturalNews) Just how good is resveratrol at preventing cancer and heart disease? It's so good that drug companies are trying to mimic its molecules in order to claim they're "creating" a new drug to prevent heart disease. But this is Mother Nature's miracle drug -- only it's not a drug. It's a molecule synthesized by plants for protecting themselves! And it turns out the same molecule can protect you from cancer, heart disease and a whole lot more. I wanted you to read about the amazing benefits of resveratrol, so I put together this collection of quotes from top authors in the field. Read it to learn the truth about resveratrol that the drug companies and the FDA hope you never find out...

Reversing Tooth Decay...
Teeth are able to heal themselves. That's how traditional cultures such as the Inuit can wear their teeth down to the pulp due to chewing leather and sand-covered dried fish, yet still have an exceptionally low rate of tooth decay. It's also how the African Wakamba tribe can file their front teeth into sharp points without causing decay. Both cultures lost their resistance to tooth decay after adopting nutrient-poor Western foods such as white flour and sugar.
In a study with dogs... When a diet of high calcifying qualities, ie., one rich in vitamin D, calcium and phosphorus was given to the dogs during the period of attrition, the new secondary dentine laid down was abundant and well formed whether the original structure of the teeth was good or bad. On the other hand, a diet rich in cereals and poor in vitamin D resulted in the production of secondary dentine either small in amount or poorly calcified, and this happened even if the primary dentine was well formed.

“Our’s is the first report that shows POMx inhibits the inflammatory activity of activated human mast cells [known to play a central role in the inflammatory process] like KU812 cells,” wrote the researchers from the University of South Carolina and Case Western Reserve University.
“POMx or POMx-derived compounds may be of value for the treatment of inflammatory diseases in which mast cells play an active role,” they added.

Protect Yourself from MSG and Aspartame Excitotoxicity ...
(NaturalNews) The first line of defense against the two most commonly used and pernicious food additives, MSG and aspartame, is avoidance. However, complete avoidance is not possible for everyone all the time. MSG, monosodium glutamate, has been disguised with several different names. Aspartame or its primary constituent, aspartic acid, along with disguised variations of MSG, have even shown up in food products or supplements sold in health food stores!Eating out, you're sure to be taking in some MSG. Even if the restaurant doesn't add MSG to the food it prepares, MSG or disguised variations are sure to be within the foods purchased by the restaurant. Soups, gravies, and all liquids with MSG or aspartame will ensure a more rapid overload of excitotoxins than other forms of tainted foods. Even worse maybe, now it has been disclosed that many crops are being sprayed, some for several years, with the essential ingredient of MSG, processed free glutamate. So a second line of defense is certainly in order.

Hypothyroidism In Women Associated With Liver Cancer...
Women with a history of hypothyroidism face a significantly higher risk of developing liver cancer, according to a new study.
Hypothyroidism is the most common thyroid disorder among U.S. adults, affecting between 8 and 12 percent of the U.S. population, and more women than men. The condition can cause hyperlipidemia and weight gain and may play a role in the development of nonalcoholic steatohepatitis which can progress to more severe liver disease. Studies have also suggested a clinical association between hypothyroidism and hepatitis C, which is contributing to the country’s rising rate of liver cancer.

B6 may slash colorectal cancer risk: Harvard study...
Increased intake of vitamin B6 from dietary and supplements may reduce the risk of colorectal cancer by over 50 per cent, suggests a new study.
Almost 15,000 people took part in the study, which reported that increased blood levels of the vitamin’s active form, pyridoxal 5'-phosphate (PLP), were significantly associated with a reduced risk of colorectal cancer, according to findings published in the journal Cancer Epidemiology Biomarkers & Prevention.
The study follows similar findings from Scotland-based researchers published in the same journal last year. Researchers from the University of Edinburgh, Western General Hospital (Edinburgh) and the University of Aberdeen, reported that increased intakes of vitamin B6 from dietary and supplements may reduce the risk of colorectal cancer by over 20 per cent (Cancer Epidemiol Biomarkers Prev., Vol. 17, pp. 171-182).
