Is this good for me? Is this bad for me? It usually depends...

I often get asked the question "Is this good for me?" It comes in many forms like, is milk good for me, or are carbs bad, or should I stop drinking coffee, or are fruit juices healthy?

The answer to these questions is always the same. It depends!

Usually if things are taken in moderation they will not be that bad no matter what they are, but one person's moderation is another's over indulgence. What does moderation look like?

Carbohydrates for example are not essential for health except for the phytonutrients (colors in foods and drinks) and perhaps the fiber, if they are not refined so much as to remove them all.
Your body can get all the energy it needs from proteins and fats that are consumed in the diet.
If you are a starving child in China, India, or Africa though, then simple carbs like rice and bread keep you from starving by storing fat around the tummy to be used as energy when there is no food to eat. For the average American, simple carbs are not needed and contribute the most to obesity, type 2 diabetes, etc. Why? Because we have an abundance of food on a daily basis. We also have an abundance of belly fat, as Americans are among the fattest people on earth. Problem is we don't need them to keep from starving to death. Simple carbs, or high glycemic foods and drinks, cause you to overeat. I recommend limiting them to 45 grams per day for ideal health. Read the book Life Without Bread.

An orange is healthy, but a large glass of orange juice is too concentrated in sugar and would be like eating 5 to 6 oranges at one sitting. Then if you add that glass of orange juice to a big bacon and eggs breakfast with potatoes and toast, well, you can see that is way too many calories and the combination is a formula for acid reflux disease. There is no good reason for soda pop at all.

Milk is not needed by the body after we are weaned. It is very processed and is a dead food. Many people are genetically deficient in lactase, an enzyme that is required to digest milk. So here it really depends on your genetics, but in general, I see know value in it. On the other hand, fermented dairy like hard cheeses, yogurts, or cottage cheese, are well tolerated by most. In the case of yogurt though, plain with a little fruit is fine. Commercial yogurts are extremely high in sugars, both natural and added.

Coffee studies show that it is neither good nor bad for most people, but when I evaluate people, I often tell them it is not good for them for many reasons. Others I see no reason why they can't drink it in moderation. I can argue though that green tea is much better for overwhelming reasons.

Bottom line usually comes down to this. Could a hunter gatherer find this food in nature?
Since these people historically have the best health, the closer you adopt your diet and habits to their eating habits the better you will do, because we are genetically designed to eat that way.

Vitamin D deficiency common in patients with IBD, chronic liver disease...
Vitamin D replacement may be necessary to reverse deficiency-related bone loss.
New research presented at the 73rd Annual Scientific Meeting of the American College of Gastroenterology in Orlando found patients with inflammatory bowel disease or chronic liver disease were at increased risk of developing Vitamin D deficiencies. Two separate studies highlight the importance of regular Vitamin D checkups in the evaluation of patients with certain digestive diseases.

Vitamin D Expert at UC Riverside Leads UC Scientists' Call Recommending Increase in Daily Vitamin D Intake...Seventeen researchers join Anthony Norman in declaring that the government’s current recommended daily allowance for the vitamin is inadequate.
Increasingly, vitamin D is being recognized by several researchers as an important player in contributing to overall good health. Now a group of 18 vitamin D researchers at the University of California states that the recommended daily intake of the vitamin is inadequate, and asks the government to re-examine its recommendation.

Too Many Sweetened Drinks, From Soda To Lemonade, Put Children At Risk For Obesity, Poor Nutrition, Study At Cornell Finds...
ScienceDaily (June 27, 2003) Too much soda and other sugar-filled drinks make children fat. That is the message of a two-month study by nutritionists at Cornell University. Children who drank more than 12 ounces of sweetened drinks gained significantly more weight than children who drank less than six ounces a day. That's because children do not reduce how much food they eat at meals for the calories they consume in sweetened drinks. The more sweetened drinks they consumed, the greater their daily caloric intake and the greater the weight gain.

A little wine may boost heart-healthy omega-3s...
NEW YORK - A glass or two of wine per day may increase the amount of heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids in a person's blood, a new study suggests.
The study of European adults found that those who drank in moderation tended to have higher blood levels of omega-3 — even when intake of fish, the major dietary source of the fats, was taken into account.

10 Diseases Linked To Soda...
Few people drink soda because they believe it's a healthy drink. We drink it because it is very tasty, convenient and inexpensive.Statistics shows that Americans drink more soda pop than ever before. These popular beverages account for more than 25% of all drinks consumed in the United States. More than 15 billion gallons were sold in 2000. That works out to at least one 12-ounce can per day for every man, woman and child. Fifty-six percent of 8-year-olds down soft drinks daily, and a third of teenage boys drink at least three cans of soda pop per day.

Gut Feelings May Actually Reflect Reliable Memories...
ScienceDaily (Feb. 9, 2009) — You know the feeling. You make a decision you're certain is merely a "lucky guess." A new study from Northwestern University offers precise electrophysiological evidence that such decisions may sometimes not be guesswork after all.

The energy bunny in me. We need to take care of the ‘power plants’ in the body, the mitochondria, in order to stay as active as we can as we age...
The human body is made up of trillions of cells. How you feel and function depends on how all these trillions of cells feel and function. To stay healthy each of the trillions of cells in the body must produce its own energy – cells cannot borrow energy from each other.
In the cell, energy is created by microscopic structures called mitochondria. “Mitochondria are the power plants of our cells,” says Simon Melov, director of the Genomics Core at the Buck Institute for Age Research in Novato, California. “They convert food into energy in the form of Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP), which the body uses to live.”
For the cells to convert food to energy, it requires a vitamin-like substance called Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10). Without CoQ10 our body will not be able to make energy, without energy there is no life; without well-functioning mitochondria, there is (almost) no energy.

A Kiss Isn't Just a Kiss, It's Chemistry...
Just in time for Valentine's Day, a panel of scientists examined the mystery of what happens when hearts throb and lips lock. Kissing, it turns out, unleashes chemicals that ease stress hormones in both sexes and encourage bonding in men, though not so much in women.
Chemicals in the saliva may be a way to assess a mate, Wendy Hill, dean of the faculty and a professor of neuroscience at Lafayette College, told a meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science on Friday.

Breast Cancer Appears to be Tamed with Green Tea Use
There’s good news for women who regularly drink green tea. Five or more cups a day could mean you have a better chance of surviving breast cancer. In addition, if your doctor discovers the cancer in an early stage, it’s less likely to spread to lymph nodes. More than eight cups a day, for postmenopausal women, might mean even extra protection. Overall, green tea drinkers are more likely to have types of cancer that respond to medical treatment, and are less likely to get cancer again than other women.

Type 2 Diabetes Linked to Diet Soda...
NaturalNews) A new study published in January 16, 2009 edition of Diabetes Care indicates that daily consumption of diet soda plays a key role in the development of metabolic syndrome and Type 2 Diabetes. Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of findings known to increase the risk of diabetes and cardiovascular disease and is also known as Syndrome X. Metabolic syndrome includes insulin resistance or actual Type 2 diabetes, low HDL, elevated triglycerides and central obesity (high waist circumference).

The Prediabetic Epidemic ...
The person with a "fat tire" carries an unmistakable clue to his health right around the waist: He either has or is at serious risk of developing Syndrome X. The condition isn't a household word quite yet, but it's getting there. An estimated 60 to 70 million Americans—about one of every four people—have some degree of Syndrome X, which sets the stage for adult-onset diabetes and coronary artery disease. The term Syndrome X was coined in 1988 by a Stanford University endocrinologist, although the cluster of signs and symptoms that distinguish it had previously been referred to as metabolic syndrome or insulin-resistance syndrome. Originally, Syndrome X was defined by four characteristics: (1) abdominal obesity, (2) elevated levels of triglycerides and low levels of high-density lipoproteins (HDL, or the "good" cholesterol), (3) hypertension, and (4) insulin resistance. Insulin resistance, the hallmark of adult-onset diabetes, also lies at the core of Syndrome X. This hormone imbalance alters blood-fat ratios, raises blood pressure, and increases fat storage.

The Importance of a Multivitamin...
If it only took eating an apple a day to get all the necessary nutrients from our food, we'd all be happy and healthy, but it's not. We actually need to consume 7-10 servings of fruits and vegetables each and every day[1] to ensure we are getting all 13 different vitamins and 17 different minerals. But why? What do vitamins and minerals do for us anyway?

FDA Recommends Ban of Painkiller after Fifty Years...
(NaturalNews) At the end of January the FDA held a public hearing to reconsider the safety of Darvon, a painkiller that has been on the market since 1957. The panel voted 14 to 12 in favor of withdrawing the drug from the market, following in the footsteps of the United Kingdom which banned the drug in 2005 after concluding the benefits of Darvon did not outweigh the serious risks.

Vitamin B12 identified As An Effective Canker Sore Therapy, Study Suggests...
ScienceDaily (Feb. 15, 2009) — A team of physicians at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev has discovered that a nightly dose of vitamin B12 is a simple, effective and low risk therapy to prevent Recurrent Aphthous Stomatitis (RAS), better known as "canker sores."

Get the lead out and other metals and minerals that are shortening your life...

Besides taking antioxidants to control free radical damage in order to slow down aging and fight disease, research is now showing us that heavy metals and even excessive minerals like iron, copper and calcium accumulate as we get older and play free radical havoc on our cells. Especially the mitochondria of the cells, the power house of energy and longevity, but only if we protect them from DNA damage.

Some scientists estimate that an average person has 1000 times the amount of lead in their bones today than would be normal just 100 years ago. According to Dr. Garry Gordon, MD,DO,MD(H), an expert on metal detoxification and cardiovascular medicine, "lead makes mercury", another metal that we have high levels of today, "100 times more toxic. So the need for continual heavy metal detoxification exits for everyone hoping to achieve anything like optimal health and longevity."
Dr. Gordon says, "You may have headaches, insomnia, irritability, a low sex drive, tremors, mood problems, nausea, depression, memory difficulties, trouble concentrating, poor coordination, or even constipation." Even worse, information now exits that they are free radical and inflammation generators that can cause heart disease and cancer in some people.

There are natural compounds that can remove these metals and accumulated iron, copper, and calcium like EDTA and IP6. You might want to check them out. I personally take both of them on a daily basis.

Also in this blog, I have featured a video interview of Dr. Ignarro, who was a co-recipient of the Nobel Prize in Medicine or Physiology in 1998 for his research into NO’s (Nitric Oxide) role as a signaling molecule.
Instead of drugs, Dr. Ignarro recommends exercise, dietary changes, C, and E, as well as the amino acids L-Arginine and L-Citrulline in his book... NO More Heart Disease: How Nitric Oxide Can Prevent--Even Reverse--Heart Disease and Stroke .

The Overlooked Cancer Cure From Japan...
Nature provides an anti-cancer molecule found in rice bran that exceeds the effectiveness and safety of most anti-cancer drugs. Yet it goes unutilized by modern medicine.
Most drugs are modeled after molecules found in nature. Nature’s molecules are then re-arranged so as to acquire a patent. Pharmaceutical companies can then justify the expense of conducting studies to prove the safety and efficacy of their pharmaceutical compounds. But frequently, nature cannot be improved upon. This is the case in regards to rice bran extract(IP6).

IP6 Shines Brightly as an Alternative Cancer Treatment and Preventive...
(NaturalNews) The anticancer effects of IP6 are turning out to be nothing short of astounding. Research is showing that besides reducing cell proliferation and increasing the differentiation of malignant cells, IP6 can often restore cancerous cells to normality.

Olive Oil: Which Type Is Best?...
ScienceDaily (Aug. 14, 2007) — Among cooking oils, olive oil is touted as one of the healthiest. Olive oil contains monounsaturated fat, which can lower total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein (LDL or “bad”) cholesterol in the blood.

Low-Dose Mercury Exposure From Fillings, Vaccines and Fish Linked to Heart Disease...
(NaturalNews) In spite of the fact that mercury is routinely used in dental restorations and thimerosal, a preservative containing mercury commonly used in vaccines, an international team of researchers has warned in a press release that low-dose mercury exposure can damage the arteries, having a harmful effect on vascular function. According to The Scientific Information and News Service (Servicio de Información y Noticias Científicas - SINC), the researchers recently published the results of a study they conducted in the American Journal of Physiology-Heart and Circulatory Physiology. The purpose of the study, according to its authors, was to determine whether really low concentrations of mercury, administered over a protracted time period, "could have a prejudicial effect on vascular response."

Sugary Soft Drinks Linked To Increased Risk Of Gout In Men...
ScienceDaily (Feb. 1, 2008) — Consumption of sugar sweetened soft drinks and fructose is strongly associated with an increased risk of gout in men, finds a study published by the British Medical Journal.

New Potential Health Benefit Of Olive Oil For Peptic Ulcer Disease...
ScienceDaily (Feb. 14, 2007) — Already fabled for an array of health benefits, extra virgin olive oil — a centerpiece of the Mediterranean Diet — may have a new role in helping to prevent and treat Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infections, which cause millions of cases of gastritis and peptic ulcer disease each year, researchers in Spain report.

Root Canals Can Have Devastating Effects on Health...
(NaturalNews) Is it wise and prudent to have a root canal? There are issues with root canal therapy that everyone should know before deciding to have one. There has been recent research that presents valid proof of systemic illnesses that are a direct result from latent infections lingering in filled roots. These conclusions are based on research performed by Dr. Weston Price over a 25 year period in the beginning of the twentieth century. The research done by Dr. Weston Price discusses how root canals can cause bacteria to become trapped inside the structure of teeth. This can be the cause of many diseases that can be traced to one single source.

Who can you trust to protect your health?

Today I am devoting my blog to the study of aging and how treating and understanding what causes us to age can be the best way to prevent and reverse chronic disease. This is what I focus all of my attention on these days. Reading my blogs and watching the videos I highlight is the best way for YOU to stay healthy and disease free as you age.

Who do you trust to protect your health and well being.

Is it the FDA? Oh please, they are here to protect the health and well being of the pharmaceutical companies, not you. FDA attempting to regulate supplements, herbs, and juices as "drugs"

Do you rely on Conventional Medicine? I hope not. While emergency medical and surgical care is great if you get in a car accident or break your leg, statistics show that when they treat you for chronic diseases, you open yourself up to the 3rd leading cause of death in America, iatrogenocide.
An iatrogenic disorder is a condition caused by medical personnel or procedures or through exposure to the environment of a health care facility, including fears instilled in patients by remarks or questions of examining physicians. Read this Blog when you get a chance: What's the 3rd leading cause of death in the U.S ?

See the record for yourself...

COMPARATIVE CAUSES OF DEATH. ANNUAL AVERAGE IN THE U. S.
Adverse Drug Reactions 100,000 to 140,000
Automobile Accidents 39,325
Food Contamination 9,100
Boating Accidents 2,064
Household Cleaners 74
Acute Pesticide Poisoning 12
All Vitamins 0
Amino acids 0
Commercial Herbal Products 0 **
*Sources Data as of 1995 from American Association of Poison Control Centers, National Center for Health Statistics, Journal of the American Medical Association, Centers for Disease Control, March of Dimes, Consumer Product Safety Commission, FDA Reports. **Before Ephedra scare, Recent problems attributed to synthetic Ephedra and are not proven.

How about the media? Do you rely on the daily news to tell you the truth about what's good for you and what's not? I study news reports all the time and very often they only report things that they sensationalize and seldom do they get their information or analyses correct. Often, their conclusions are misleading at best. Take them with a big grain of salt.

While I devote HealthBlogger to the theme of... News and commentary on health, wellness, and anti-aging nutrition... My mission statement is to educate people of the latest studies and nutraceuticals that can slow down and reverse, to some degree, aging and ill health.

Today I have included videos and studies that point us in the right direction to better health and longevity. As you will see, people who live beyond 100 eat a varying diet. Some are religious and some are not, some eat lots of meat and some don't. There are some common factors though. They all get lots of sun and therefore vitamin D3, they consume green tea or red wine, which contain powerful nutraceuticals that turn bad genes off and good genes on. They eat foods with lots of bright colors and don't eat refined foods and trans fats. And many avoid doctors and modern medicine altogether.

Lately, I have been recommending people take a look at a newly designed multi that has all the nutraceuticals that have been shown to effect aging, as a low cost way to make sure you are covering all the bases and recommending the Ideal Diet, one that keeps inflammation down to a minimum and promotes good health.

Enjoy this week's selections and remember...

Resveratrol May Influence Blood Sugar Management...
A new study suggests that the phytonutrient resveratrol can influence enzymes involved in carbohydrate metabolism as well as other factors involved in glucose regulation, indicating it may have a role to play in supporting healthy blood sugar levels.

Remarkable Longevity Enhancer and Heart Protector...
For the past few years, resveratrol, a compound found in red grapes, has attracted widespread medical attention as the long sought-after fountain of youth. This is because research has begun to indicate that this phytonutrient does indeed seem to have longevity-enhancing effects and that it also can play a critical role in heart health. Since 2003, when Harvard researchers discovered that resveratrol increases the life span of yeast cells by as much as 70 percent, scientists have eagerly studied its effects in increasingly complex forms of life. Following up on research that resveratrol extended the life of roundworms and fruit flies, the most recent studies reveal for the first time that resveratrol also extends life span in mammals.

Supplements can make a big difference...

When I write and publish HealthBlogger, my goal is to teach people a balance between dietary changes and supplementation. I read a ton of studies every week and often a dietary change shows an improvement of perhaps 6 months to a few years in overall length of life. Adding supplements often takes this to a much higher level.

For example, a study showed that if Americans just added 300 mgs of vitamin C to whatever they were doing diet-wise, men could add 6 years to their life and perhaps 2 years or more for women. Linus Pauling died at 93 and felt vitamin C added 20 years to his life span. He recommended taking 3200 mgs to 12,000 mgs per day and he took 18,000 mgs himself. Why would a simple supplement add this much to life span numbers? Because we don't produce ascorbic acid in our livers as we should because of an enzyme we and a few other animals lack. It is a missing chemical needed for ideal health. Getting enough from diet, other than to prevent scurvy, is almost impossible with today's dietary habits, especially if you are under stress. Are you under stress? Who isn't these days?

Other phytonutrients like Resveratrol and vitamin D3 affect our genes by turning good ones on and bad ones off. They can create improvements in disease prevention by as much as 70 to 95%, much more than diet alone can do.

Another supplement that I often put in the amazing category is Nattokinase. Considered a clot buster, it is an enzyme that keeps blood from developing clots and can remove them in as little as 24 to 36 hours. Medical authorities say that perhaps as many as 90% of all fatal heart attacks and strokes are caused by clots that form due to platelet aggregation. You can take drugs like aspirin and others that can have an effect on reducing them, but with a potential for negative side effects like internal bleeding and excessive bruising.
Nattokinase studies show it is effective and has little or no side effects or concerns.
Can you get Nattokinase from food? Yes, from Natto, a fermented food eaten in Japan, but if you ever tasted it you would most likely never eat it ever again.
Never, ever, ever, ever... again.

I believe a combination of dietary changes, as well as smart supplementation, is the best way to achieve ideal health and longevity.

Enjoy this week's studies and articles.

It is never too late to become younger.

BLOCKBUSTER NEWS: NOW WE KNOW VITAMIN E IS EVEN MORE ESSENTIAL FOR HEART HEALTH THAN WE EVER THOUGHT!...
"Vitamin E deficiency is more closely linked to death from heart disease than such better-known risk factors as high cholesterol and high blood pressure.”
In specific scientific language, the researchers found there is an “Inverse correlation between plasma vitamin E and mortality from ischemic heart disease in cross-cultural epidemiology.”
In plain language, that means, the lower your vitamin E blood levels, the greater your chance of dying from heart disease.! When researchers for the U.N.’s World Health Organization looked at 100 middle age men from each of 16 regions across Europe, they determined low levels of vitamin E in the blood correlated with fatal heart disease more than any of the classical risk factors. Researchers in the United Nations study said they could predict 62 percent of heart disease deaths by looking at blood levels of vitamin E!.

Decongestant Use Common Among Young Children In U.S., Even Though Pseudoephedrine Exposure May Be Harmful ...
ScienceDaily (Dec. 2, 2008) — Researchers from Boston University's Slone Epidemiology Center have found that exposure to pseudoephedrine, a decongestant found in many cough-and-cold and allergy medications, has been common among U.S. children, especially those under the age of two years who are at the highest risk for toxicity and for whom safe dosing recommendations are lacking.
