Good Sunday Morning...
Woke up to an article in The Huffington Post's section on health entitled... "Half of all Americans to be obese by 2030".
There is no reason for this. We know how to reverse it. Diets come and go but facts are facts. In nutritional science there are foods that are considered essential for human life and those that are not.
Proteins are essential. The word protein means "of first importance". You need at least 12 of the 20+ proteins from foods to remain healthy. Fats are essential and you need at least 3 to remain healthy. 60 minerals and 16 vitamins are essential. Carbohydrates are NON-essential but fruits and veggies that are colorful are loaded with antioxidants and nutrients that are beneficial like fiber.
All other carbs increase our odds of becoming sick and overweight.
The secret to a long and healthy life is found in this section of Dr. Joel Wallech's Lecture... Look for it...

Also, as we grow older, our genes become less and less likely to deal well with "new foods" like grains, legumes, and dairy (especially milk). Most inflammation comes from one or more of these food types.
Sorry, I don't make the rules, I just observe them.

Coronary Calcium Beats C-Reactive Protein for Predicting Heart Attack and Stroke Risk, Study Finds...
ScienceDaily (Aug. 20, 2011) — The presence of calcium in coronary arteries is a much better predictor of heart attack and stroke than C-reactive protein among people with normal levels of LDL cholesterol, according to a study of more than 2,000 people led by a Johns Hopkins heart specialist.
Results of the study, published in the August 19, 2011 issue of The Lancet, have important implications for deciding whether cholesterol-lowering statin medication should be prescribed for people who have heart disease risk factors but normal levels of LDL, the so-called "bad" cholesterol. An estimated 6 million American adults fall into that gray-zone category.
The goal of the new study, which followed 2,083 people for six years, was to further refine who was at higher risk and, therefore, might benefit from taking statin medications. Conversely, the study also looked to define which groups may be at low risk and not in need of the drugs. The participants in the study were volunteers in the ongoing Multi-Ethnic Study on Atherosclerosis, known as MESA, which is an NIH-funded Hopkins-affiliated study.
"This was a direct comparison to see which patients with a normal LDL level of less than 130 mg/dL would have the greater risk of having a heart attack or stroke -- those with evidence of calcium in coronary arteries, as determined on a cardiac CT test, or those with high levels of C-reactive protein, which is measured in blood and is an indicator of inflammation somewhere in the body," says Michael J. Blaha, M.D. M.P.H, a cardiology fellow at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and the Johns Hopkins Heart and Vascular Institute, who is the lead author of the study.
Blaha and colleagues found that 95 percent of the heart attacks, strokes or heart-related deaths in the study population occurred in people with some measurable calcium in their heart arteries. Meanwhile, 13.4 percent of those with the highest levels of coronary calcium (with scores greater than 100 on a calcium scoring test) had a heart attack or stroke during the study, whereas only 2 percent of those with high C-reactive protein in their blood, but no calcium buildup, had a heart attack or stroke.
In their study, the researchers determined that high levels of C-reactive protein in the blood, a score at or above 2 milligrams per liter, offered little predictive value after accounting for such risk factors as age, gender, ethnicity, hypertension, obesity, diabetes, smoking and a family history of heart disease.
"A calcium test directly looks for the disease we propose to treat with statins. Without measurable amounts of calcium, which indicates atherosclerosis, you are likely to be at very low risk in the short-term," explains Blaha.
This new study was designed to address some unanswered questions from a 2008 study called JUPITER, short for the Justification for the Use of Statins in Primary Prevention: An Interventional Tool Evaluating Rosuvastatin. That study found a 46 percent reduction in heart attacks among people with normal LDL cholesterol and a high level of C-reactive protein who took the statin medication rosuvastatin, which is marketed as Crestor.
JUPITER only included people with high C-reactive protein and none of those participants were tested to see whether they had evidence of calcium in their coronary arteries. So, Blaha says, it could not be determined from JUPITER whether people with low levels of C-reactive protein would benefit in the same way from statin therapy, or how the presence of coronary calcium may have affected the results.
All of the participants in the MESA trial had undergone coronary CT scanning, known as a calcium scoring test. Blaha and colleagues identified a group of participants in MESA who had high C-reactive protein levels and fit the criteria for JUPITER. The researchers also selected a group from MESA who had low levels of C-reactive protein. Then they were able to directly compare the prognostic importance of coronary artery calcium to C-reactive protein.
A statistical comparison of the results showed that among those with no measurable coronary calcium, it would be necessary to treat 549 patients with statin medication in order to prevent one heart attack. However, for those with high levels of coronary calcium buildup (with a calcium score greater than 100), the predicted number needed to treat to prevent one heart attack was only 24.
"Statin medications, which are a lifelong therapy, should not be considered the same as other preventive measures, such as diet and exercise, to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease," says Roger Blumenthal, M.D., a cardiologist, professor of Medicine and director of the Ciccarone Center for the Prevention of Heart Disease at Johns Hopkins. He also was a co-investigator on the new study. "All drugs have the potential to cause side effects in some people, although with statins, the side effects are rare," he adds.
According to Blumenthal, "Many patients fall into the gray zone of being healthy with normal LDL cholesterol, but also having some risk factors, including being overweight, having elevated blood sugar levels or a family history of heart disease. Our study provides clear evidence that high levels of calcium in coronary arteries will increase the risk of a heart attack or a stroke. And the risk increases with the amount of calcium, whether or not patients have high levels of C-reactive protein."
"While not everyone needs a calcium scoring test," Blaha says, "we believe looking for calcification in coronary vessels in certain patients makes sense in order to predict who may benefit from statin therapy because the test gets right to the heart of the disease we want to treat."
"Our data support recent American Heart Association guidelines, which say it is reasonable to order a coronary calcium scan for adults who are considered to be at intermediate risk of a heart attack over the next 10 years. A high coronary calcium score would indicate that statin therapy would likely be a useful strategy to lower that person's cardiovascular risk," according to Blumenthal.
In addition to Blaha and Blumenthal, other Johns Hopkins investigators involved in this study were study senior investigator Khurram Nasir, M.D., M.P.H., who is now at Yale University School of Medicine in New Haven, Conn.; Andrew DeFilippis, M.D., M.Sc.; and João Lima, M.D. Other researchers were Matthew Budoff, M.D., at the Los Angeles Biomedical Research Institute at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in Torrance, Calif.; Juan Rivera, M.D., M.P.H., and Arthur Agatston, M.D., both at the University of Miami; Ron Blankstein, M.D., at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston; and Dan O'Leary at Carney Hospital in Dorchester, Mass.

Kidney Disease - The Hidden Cause of Chronic Resistant Hypertension (High Blood Pressure).
The kidneys are the key organs that regulate systemic blood pressure. They are the bean-shaped organs at the back of the abdominal cavity located below the lower margin of the rib cage and the upper limit of the pelvic cavity. The two kidneys regulate blood volume, excrete acidic wastes, metabolize drugs, balance electrolytes, and produce hormones. Yes, the kidneys do a lot more than make urine. In Chinese medicine it is even believed that the force of the kidneys control the bones as well as fertility. In this article I will focus on how renal disease can cause or provoke intractable high blood pressure.
Hypertension accelerates renal insufficiency. The opposite is also true. In physiology it is always thought that diseased kidneys need high blood pressure to maintain tissue perfusion. This simply means that for the rest of the body tissues to keep on receiving nutrients and oxygen through the blood the kidneys have to raise blood pressure. This is a natural survival mechanism which is incompatible with optimum health.
The renal vasculature is a low pressure bed. In other words the kidneys are very sensitive to changes in blood pressure and tend to react with renal artery spasms (sclerosis) raising blood pressure through the renin-angiotensin-aldolsterone mechanism. Don't let this throw you. I will explain it.
Renin is the hormone that is secreted by the juxtaglomerular cells in response to decreased blood volume, low potassium, low adrenaline, or decreased renal perfusion pressure. Renin then converts a 10-amino acid protein (packaged in the liver) called angiotensinogen to 8-amino acid polypeptide called angiotensin I. Angiotensin I is still inactive but is activated in the lungs by angiotensin converting enzymes (ACE) to the active angiotension II. Angiotensin II is a potent vasoconstrictor. At the same time renin also stimulates the suprarenal glands (the adrenals) to secrete a hormone called aldosterone which in turn stimulate the kidney nephrons to reabsorb salt and water to expand blood volume. All in an attempt to raise blood pressure.
Now apart from atherosclerosis and blood viscosity the greatest cause of essential hypertension is glomerulo-sclerosis. The glomerulus are the filtration apparatus of the kidneys. Glomerulo-sclerosis is a fancy way of saying that the glomerulus are hardened with debris, fibrin clots (fibrosis), and acidic waste clogging the filters. As a result the pressure builds up. The inflow is now more than the out-flow. The tubules or nephrons are also hardened at the same time. We call this nephrosclerosis. Diabetes can also accelerate this process as in diabetic nephropathy.
Please note that before hypertension is even diagnosed half of the kidneys are gone. If your hypertension is accompanied by leg swelling, tiredness, and puffy eyes in the absence of heart failure your kidneys must have been sick. The sad part is that renal function tests like blood urea nitrogen and serum creatinine may still be normal at this point.
To avoid end-stage renal failure and attendant hypertension an ounce of prevention is always better than a pound of cure. Stop all foods that hurt the kidneys like junk, fragmented, and devitalized foods. All fried stuff, processed foods, drugs like asprin, too much refined sugar, heavy metals (lead and cadmium), heavy animal proteins, coffee, and anti-hypertensives (especially the diuretics).
To restore the kidney back to normal before it is too late you must do some debridement with enzyme blend containing proteolytic enzymes like nattokinase and serrapeptase, kidney friendly herbs like milk thistle, uva ursi, parsley, corn silk, and buchu. Raw fruits and vegetables also help to restore renal vigor and function without harmful prescription drugs. To get rid of heavy metals you do chelation with EDTA, malic acid, vitamin C, N-acetyl Cysteine, Magnesium, Vitamin B6, CoQ10, and Zinc.

Limiting Carbs, Not Calories, Reduces Liver Fat Faster, Researchers Find...
ScienceDaily (Apr. 19, 2011) — Curbing carbohydrates is more effective than cutting calories for individuals who want to quickly reduce the amount of fat in their liver, report UT Southwestern Medical Center researchers.
"What this study tells us is that if your doctor says that you need to reduce the amount of fat in your liver, you can do something within a month," said Dr. Jeffrey Browning, assistant professor of internal medicine at UT Southwestern and the study's lead author.
The results, available online and in an upcoming issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, could have implications for treating numerous diseases including diabetes, insulin resistance, and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, or NAFLD. The disease, characterized by high levels of triglycerides in the liver, affects as many as one-third of American adults. It can lead to liver inflammation, cirrhosis, and liver cancer.
For the study researchers assigned 18 participants with NAFLD to eat either a low-carbohydrate or a low-calorie diet for 14 days.
The participants assigned to the low-carb diet limited their carbohydrate intake to less than 20 grams a day -- the equivalent of a small banana or a half-cup of egg noodles -- for the first seven days. For the final seven days they switched to frozen meals prepared by UT Southwestern's Clinical and Translational Research Center (CTRC) kitchen that matched their individual food preferences, carbohydrate intake, and energy needs.
Those assigned to the low-calorie diet continued their regular diet and kept a food diary for the four days preceding the study. The CTRC kitchen then used these individual records to prepare all meals during the 14-day study. Researchers limited the total number of calories to roughly 1,200 a day for the female participants and 1,500 a day for the males.
After two weeks researchers used advanced imaging techniques to analyze the amount of liver fat in each individual. They found that the study participants on the low-carb diet lost more liver fat.
Although the study was not designed to determine which diet was more effective for losing weight both the low-calorie dieters and the low-carbohydrate dieters lost an average of 10 pounds.
Dr. Browning cautioned that the findings do not explain why participants on the low-carb diet saw a greater reduction in liver fat and that they should not be extrapolated beyond the two-week period of study.
"This is not a long-term study, and I don't think that low-carb diets are fundamentally better than low-fat ones," he said. "Our approach is likely to be only of short-term benefit because at some point the benefits of weight loss alone trounce any benefits derived from manipulating dietary macronutrients such as calories and carbohydrates.
"Weight loss, regardless of the mechanism, is currently the most effective way to reduce liver fat."
Other UT Southwestern researchers involved in the study were Dr. Shawn Burgess, senior author and assistant professor of pharmacology in the Advanced Imaging Research Center (AIRC); Dr. Jonathan Baker, assistant professor of pathology; Dr. Thomas Rogers, former professor of pathology; Jeannie Davis, clinical research coordinator in the AIRC; and Dr. Santhosh Satapati, postdoctoral researcher in the AIRC.
The National Institutes of Health supported the study.

Everything changed last Sept...
A few months back I stumbled upon a product called Protandim, that you take only once a day, that made claims I couldn't believe. I have been researching it ever since. The thought that I could accomplish what this product does with one pill a day interested me. People hate taking so many pills.
What is in Protandim...Curcumin – this herb is known for its anti-inflammatory properties. It is associated with a reduced risk for colon cancer, is helpful for some in arthritis, and a multitude of other inflammatory conditions. I have been taking this herb for 3 years for its protective benefits for the colon.
Silymarin – commonly known as milk thistle extract is known for liver detoxification and modulation. It is frequently used for Hepatitis conditions and skin disorders and is found in a multitude of detox products.
Bacopa – this is an East Indian herb used to ward off brain degeneration and dementia, promotes learning memory enhancement by regenerating neurons and synapses in the brain, and improvement in children with ADHD has been noted in studies
Ashwagandha – relaxes and reduces stress and at some dosages may help with insomnia and sexual enhancement (you know its then having a positive effect on hormones). Strong anti-oxidant properties may reduce blood sugar levels therefore helpful to diabetics. It also promotes SOD, levels glutathione, and promotes vascular dilation with its formation of nitric oxides.
Green Tea Extract – well known in the orient for many centuries as an anti-aging herb. It may also help with arthritic conditions. Studies show that it can lower cholesterol and inhibits cancer cell growth. It is associated with weight loss and is found in many weight loss products.
The 5 ingredients together in one pill were allowed 3 patents because together there synergistic affect was 18 times more powerful than any of the herbs individually.
What Protandim does...
1) Increases glutathione by 300%2) Increases activity of SOD (superoxide dismutase) and CAT (catalase) antioxidant enzymes by 54%
3) 48% decrease in plasma TBARS, a marker of lipid peroxidation and oxidative stress
4) A 57% decrease in plasma osteopontin, a fibrosis-promoting factor linked to heart failure
5) 35% increase in beneficial, protective plasma PON1 activity, an enzyme thought to protect against atherosclerosis by preventing the oxidation of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol.
6) Suppresses cancer tumors
7) Provides more antioxidant power than any food or conventional supplement
8) Is an anti-inflammatory
9) Has anti-fibrotic properties
How Protandim works...
The vast majority of antioxidant supplements sold today are "direct antioxidants". Direct antioxidants attempt to neutralize free radicals through direct consumption of antioxidant pills, juices, or other products. These products of highly concentrated levels of vitamin A, C, and E were previously thought to effectively eliminate free radicals but scientists are now realizing the limitations of direct antioxidants. In fact, you would need to consume the antioxidants found in 375 oranges or 87 glasses of red wine or about 120 vitamin C tablets (500mg) a day to neutralize the amount of free radicals your body produces every single day. With the recognition of the ineffectiveness of direct antioxidants comes the realization that there must be a better way. And as is often the case in science, the better way has come to light as we have found a variety of naturally occurring safe products that signal your cells’ DNA to produce your own natural defenses.
The unique blend of phytonutrients in Protandim signal your body’s genes to produce special antioxidant enzymes, SOD (superoxide dismutase), and CAT (catalase) that work together as the body’s first line of defense against free radicals.* These enzymes are “catalytic”, which means that SOD and CAT are not used up when they neutralize free radicals. A single daily caplet of Protandim creates a cascade of your body’s natural catalytic antioxidants that are able to destroy millions of free radicals per second, on a continuous basis - 24/7.*

A quick video review and a new study on Protandim released...
In this blog I have included a quick new video review on Protandim and a new peer reviewed study released 2 weeks ago . Protandim consists of 5 herbal extracts: Ashwagandha, Bacopa, Curcumin, Green tea, and Milk Thistle.
The 5 ingredients together in one pill were allowed 3 patents because together their synergistic affect was 18 times more powerful than any of the herbs individually.
New Peer Reviewed Study...
Protandim® Found to Prevent a Process that Causes Blood Vessel Blockage in New Peer-Reviewed Study From The Ohio State University
Protandim® prevents the proliferation of cells that can cause re-blockage of vessels following coronary artery bypass surgery, stenting, and carotid enarterectomy.
SAN DIEGO, Jan. 4, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- LifeVantage Corporation (OTC Bulletin Board:LFVN.ob - News), the maker of science-based solutions to oxidative stress, announced today that a new peer-reviewed study involving its flagship product, Protandim®, sponsored by the American Heart Association and the National Institutes of Health, was published in the scientific journal Free Radical Biology and Medicine. The study, conducted by researchers at The Ohio State University, examined the biochemical mechanisms that underlie the ability of Protandim® to suppress intimal hyperplasia (over-proliferation of cells that line the vessel wall), a common adverse event that limits the effectiveness of several types of vascular surgery. Protandim®, a patented dietary supplement comprised of five highly synergistic herbal ingredients, has been shown in earlier studies to activate the transcription factor Nrf2, a signal to the cell's DNA to regulate a network of protective genes. This new study further investigates Protandim's® ability to increase production of the body's Nrf2-regulated protective genes, sometimes referred to as "survival genes", which include most of the antioxidant enzymes.
The study, titled "Protandim attenuates intimal hyperplasia in human saphenous veins cultured ex vivo via a catalase-dependent pathway" by Binata Joddar, Rashmeet K. Reen, Michael S. Firstenberg, Saradhadevi Varadharaj, Joe M. McCord, Jay L. Zweier, and Keith J. Gooch is published in the journal Free Radical Biology and Medicine and may be found at the following link.
Coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery is performed more than 400,000 times a year in the United States. Most procedures requiring multiple bypasses still utilize the saphenous vein (taken from the leg) for secondary grafts. Ten years after CABG surgery, roughly half of the saphenous vein grafts will have become largely, if not completely blocked by processes that may result from intimal hyperplasia. Previous studies concluded that a major factor causing this condition is the three-to-five-fold higher concentration of oxygen experienced by the graft in its new environment. In this study, treatment with Protandim® significantly increased antioxidant enzyme activity in veins cultured at high oxygen, while reducing free radical levels, lipid peroxidation, and, importantly, reducing intimal proliferation to the level seen in a normal healthy saphenous vein.
"This study was conducted in an ex vivo model using human saphenous veins harvested from patients undergoing bypass surgery—the exact population who might benefit from a therapy to prevent intimal hyperplasia," said Dr. McCord, a co-author of the study. "Future animal studies will attempt to demonstrate the ability of Protandim® to block post-surgical intimal hyperplasia in vivo, following not only the CABG procedure, but perhaps angioplasty with stent insertion or carotid endarterectomy, as well. The long-term effectiveness of all three procedures is limited by eventual restenosis, a return of blockage often due to intimal hyperplasia. The three procedures together affect more than 1.5 million Americans every year."
"Protandim® was shown in an earlier human trial to increase antioxidant enzyme production and to eliminate the age-dependent increase in the most widely used marker of oxidative stress. The current study, as well as other recent studies, have shown that Protandim® provides benefits to the body that extend beyond its ability to decrease oxidative stress," stated David Brown, LifeVantage President and CEO. "This study was independently funded by the American Heart Association and by the Heart, Lung, Blood Institute of the National Institutes of Health. LifeVantage greatly appreciates the continuing academic interest in Protandim® shown by researchers such as Dr. Keith Gooch and his colleagues. We continue to be encouraged at the tool that Protandim® has become for researchers of many health conditions associated with oxidative stress."
A quick video review as to why I recommend everyone take this product and why I have all my anti-aging and health clients on it when possible.

Why take Protandim
Protandim is an anti-aging breakthrough.
You really need to see all 3 of these short videos, that were featured on ABC, NBC, PBS, to see just how much of a breakthrough this really is. Purchase product.
Protandim is made up of 5 nutraceutical herbs, 3 of which I have been touting for over 5 years on HealthBlogger. It is the first Nrf2 Activator on the market that up-regulates the survival genes that help the human body fight stress and down-regulates pro-fibrotic and pro-inflammatory genes that help us fight infection.
Protandim signals the body to produce it’s own antioxidant enzymes which can eliminate free radicals exponentially better than traditional antioxidants. Protandim is backed by three patents, clinical trials, peer-reviewed studies, and scrutinized by regulatory agencies.
Studies show Protandim increases levels of the anti-aging enzymes Superoxide Dismutase (SOD) by 30%, Catalase by 54%, and Glutathione by over 300%.
Protandim is the ONLY product clinically proven to reduce oxidative stress by 40%.
Protandim is a patented, anti-aging supplement specially formulated to combat oxidative stress and reverses cell aging in the genes -- where the DNA is damaged. This may very well be the leading solution to aging and degenerative processes in the body.
Developed after 40 years of research exclusively for LifeVantage and featured on ABC, NBC, PBS, in The Wall Street Journal, and described in CNN Chief Medical Correspondent Dr. Sanjay Guptas book, Chasing Life, Protandim reverses cell aging in your genes.
While Protandim makes no claims YET, other than it is an anti-aging supplement, it is being studied in 18 clinical trials currently because of it’s far reaching effects. But when you understand what these 3 enzymes do you can make up your own mind what the possibilities may be.
I have…
Learn what these enzymes do inside our bodies…
While SOD has been linked to youthfulness, longevity, and protection against chronic illnesses, the body’s production of SOD drops dramatically with advancing age.
Conditions associated with free-radical damage that may benefit from increased SOD levels include a host of inflammatory and degenerative diseases:
- Nowhere are the signs of aging more visible than in the skin, where the effects of free-radical damage accumulate and produce visible signs of skin aging. SOD may help to protect against age-related skin wrinkling by arresting the breakdown of collagen, an essential protein that tones and strengthens the skin.22
- A chronic illness with many serious complications, diabetes is associated with increased oxidative stress. Increasing SOD levels may help fight the onset and progression of diabetes.23
- SOD’s powerful antioxidant properties could have important therapeutic applications in preventing and managing cancer.24-26 Scientists now believe that genetically based deficiencies of SOD are linked to an increased susceptibility of certain people to breast and pancreatic cancers.24,25 Ensuring adequate SOD levels may help protect against these potentially deadly malignancies.
- By shielding the body from superoxide radicals, SOD may help prevent the cellular and tissue damage associated with cardiovascular disease.27-29 While mainstream medicine promotes high cholesterol as the primary culprit in atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease, low levels of SOD and other antioxidants may be even more important factors in elevating cardiovascular risk.30 Providing the body with optimal antioxidant support could protect against America’s leading cause of premature death.
- The nervous system is highly susceptible to oxidative stress. Because of its ability to protect against superoxide radicals, SOD may guard against the cellular and tissue damage tied to neurological disease.27 Specific neurological diseases linked to abnormalities in SOD include multiple sclerosis31 and Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases.32-34
- Superoxide radicals help perpetuate the chronic pain associated with inflammation. SOD’s ability to neutralize superoxide radicals is associated with pain relief,35 with potential benefits for numerous conditions, including fibromyalgia, a chronic source of muscle pain.36
- Superoxide radicals also underlie the pain and inflammation of arthritis. Research demonstrates that patients with rheumatoid arthritis have lower dietary levels and reduced activity of SOD and glutathione peroxidase (a related antioxidant enzyme) than do healthy subjects.37 Rheumatoid arthritis sufferers also exhibit lower levels of SOD in joint-cushioning cartilage cells known as chondrocytes, leaving these cells vulnerable to the damaging effects of nitric oxide and oxygen radicals.38,39 These findings suggest that depleted levels of critical antioxidants such as SOD perpetuate crippling rheumatoid arthritis.
- Scientists have linked inflammation to many chronic diseases that accompany aging. Both in cells grown in the laboratory and in live animals, SOD improved the function of white blood cells of the immune system known as macrophages. Although macrophages subjected to oxidative stress release the inflammatory compound called tumor necrosis factor, those treated with SOD release the anti-inflammatory cytokine interleukin-10 (IL-10) instead.14
- Studies have shown that people who reach the age of 90 or 100 have high blood levels of IL-10, which may protect them from the ravages of aging and from developing cancer by reducing inflammation.40 By promoting the release of IL-10, SOD may help the body ward off inflammation, in a manner similar to that seen in individuals who survive to a very old age.
- Other studies similarly suggest that SOD may be an important determinant of life span and longevity. Among various mammal species, those that produce higher tissue and serum levels of SOD live longer than those who do not.41,42 This findings suggests that boosting SOD levels may be an important strategy for extending the healthy human life span.
In summation, a wealth of scientific evidence indicates that optimizing SOD levels may help to avert the many diseases associated with inflammation and aging, including diabetes, heart disease, neurological conditions, cancer, skin aging, and arthritis.
Health Benefits of Glutathione
Liver Disease
In various liver diseases (fatty liver, acute and chronic hepatitis, cirrhosis, etc.), a four-to-eight-fold decrease in GSH was observed. The investigators postulated that low GSH contributed to liver injury. Pre-treatment with GSH offered significant protection in these clinical trials.
Lung Disease
GSH deficiencies have been documented in a number of pulmonary diseases, including acute respiratory distress syndrome, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, etc. When GSH levels were brought up to normal, patients improved significantly.
Immunity
The proliferation, growth, and differentiation of immune cells are dependent on GSH. Both the T and the B lymphocytes require adequate levels of GSH for differentiation. Patients with low GSH levels were found to have significantly lower CD4count. Low GSH status is of particular importance in patients with HIV and/or autoimmune diseases e.g. systematic lupus erythematosis and rheumatoid arthritis.
Cerebral Dysfunction
The brain is highly oxygenated and has highly saturated lipid content and is therefore particularly vulnerable to peroxidation. Parkinson's disease, schizophrenia and Tardive dyskinesia have been linked to free-radical overload with corresponding reduced levels of cellular GSH.
AtherosclerosisAtherosclerosis appears to be linked to oxidative damage to the vessel wall. Increased lipid peroxides, decreased GSH peroxidase and prostacyclin (PGI2) have been documented in human and animal atherosclerotic arteries.
Glutathione: The "mother" of all antioxidants... Dr. Mark Hyman… Diet can only have a small effect on its production, but listen to how important this enzyme is to your health. Protandim increases Glutathione by 300%.

Are we destined to fall victim to our genetic weaknesses?
With application of nutrigenomics, my specialty, it is my belief that optimal health can be achieved and many, if not most, disease states can be reversed.
It begins by adopting a hunter - gatherer diet that matches our genetics. Grains and dairy have only been eaten for 6,000 to 10,000 years of human development. This way of eating is naturally low glycemicly and removes the foods that we have the most trouble with, namely dairy, refined oils, sugar, corn syrup, HFCS and grains, breads, and cereals. It is plant based with moderate animal protein and nuts. Some people who are not gluten intolerant can genetically tolerate a Mediterranean type diet that adds whole grains. If you are one, I especially like whole rye and barley as these trigger and up-regulate genes that favor optimal health.
Here is just one example of a study that shows nutrigenomics at work with diet.
"Researchers from Finland took two groups of people with metabolic syndrome and gave each group a different diet. The diet differed in what type of carbohydrates they consumed for the 12 week study. The rest of their diet was identical. They contained the same calories and the same amount of fat, protein, carbohydrate, and fiber. The first group had wheat, oats, and potatoes as the source of their carbs. The second group ate rye as their source of carbohydrate. Rye has some very special properties. It is slowly absorbed by the body and has phytonutrients that help you lose weight and improve metabolism. After the 12 weeks, the researchers took a fat sample and analyzed it to find out which genes were turned on or off. So what happened? In the wheat, oat, and potato group, 62 genes were activated that increased inflammation, oxidative stress and the stress response, worsened blood sugar balance, and generally amplified all of the forces in the body that lead to obesity, heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and Alzheimer's disease! No good genes were turned on. In the rye group, 71 genes were turned on that prevent diabetes, lower cholesterol, reduce inflammation, and improve blood sugar control. In both cases, the genes that were turned on and off were 100% effective."
I could offer many more examples, but I think you get the idea. Now with just 3 supplements added to a diet like this we can switch on survival, anti-inflammatory, anti-fribrotic, immune modulating genes, remove calcium from soft tissues and direct that calcium to the bones, and turn on your own body's production of 3 metabolic enzymes; Super Oxide Dismutase (SOD), Catalase, and Glutathione Peroxidase.
SOD and CAT are increased by 40% in just 15 days and 55% in 90 days, with GP increased by 300%.
In all, over 3,000 genes are turned on or off in positive ways with no negative side effects.
The 3 supplements are Protandim, D3, and K2. And the beauty is, just 3 pills a day with breakfast! Wow.
The research on diet and these supplements is so new that most people are not aware of them, so here are a few videos that will offer the reason and the science behind them. If you calculate the statistics with these nutrients, based on peer reviewed studies, it suggests a possible 75% to 100% reduction in your chances of getting or dying from cancer, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and would positively effect over 200 diseases.

Know the truth about optimal vitamin D levels...
The following was released today by the Vitamin D Council: You all need to read it.
After 13 years of silence, the quasi governmental agency, the Institute of Medicine's (IOM) Food and Nutrition Board (FNB), yesterday recommended that a three - pound premature infant can take virtually the same amount of vitamin D as a 300 pound pregnant woman. While that 400 IU/day dose is close to adequate for infants, 600 IU/day in pregnant women will do nothing to help the three childhood epidemics most closely associated with gestational and early childhood vitamin D deficiencies: asthma, auto-immune disorders, and, as recently reported in the largest pediatric journal in the world, autism (1). Professor Bruce Hollis of the Medical University of South Carolina has shown pregnant and lactating women need at least 5,000 IU/day, not 600.
The FNB also reported that vitamin D toxicity might occur at an intake of 10,000 IU/day (250 micrograms), although they could produce no reproducible evidence that 10,000 IU/day has ever caused toxicity in humans and only one poorly conducted study indicating 20,000 IU/day may cause mild elevations in serum calcium but not clinical toxicity.
Viewed with different measure, this FNB report recommends that an infant should take 10 micrograms/day (400 IU) and the pregnant women 15 micrograms/day (600 IU). As a single 30 minutes dose of summer sunshine gives adults more than 10,000 IU (250 micrograms), the FNB is apparently also warning that natural vitamin D input – as occurred from the sun before the widespread use of sunscreen – is dangerous. That is, the FNB is implying that God does not know what she is doing.
Disturbingly, this FNB committee focused on bone health, just like they did 14 years ago. They ignored the thousands of studies from the last ten years that showed higher doses of vitamin D helps: heart health, brain health, breast health, prostate health, pancreatic health, muscle health, nerve health, eye health, immune health, colon health, liver health, mood health, skin health, and especially fetal health. Tens of millions of pregnant women and their breast-feeding infants are severely vitamin D deficient, resulting in a great increase in the medieval disease, rickets. The FNB report seems to reason that if so many pregnant women have low vitamin D blood levels then it must be OK because such low levels are so common. However, such circular logic simply represents the cave man existence of most modern day pregnant women.
Hence, if you want to optimize your vitamin D levels – not just optimize the bone effect – supplementing is crucial. But it is almost impossible to significantly raise your vitamin D levels when supplementing at only 600 IU/day (15 micrograms). Pregnant women taking 400 IU/day have the same blood levels as pregnant women not taking vitamin D; that is, 400 IU is a meaninglessly small dose for pregnant women. Even taking 2,000 IU/day of vitamin D will only increase the vitamin D levels of most pregnant women by about 10 points, depending mainly on their weight. Professor Bruce Hollis has shown that 2,000 IU/day does not raise vitamin D to healthy or natural levels in either pregnant or lactating women. Therefore supplementing with higher amounts -- like 5000 IU/day -- is crucial for those women who want their fetus to enjoy optimal vitamin D levels, and the future health benefits that go along with it.
For example, taking only two of the hundreds of recently published studies, Professor Urashima and colleagues in Japan gave 1,200 IU/day of vitamin D3 for six months to Japanese 10 year-olds in a randomized controlled trial. They found vitamin D dramatically reduced the incidence of influenza A as well as the episodes of asthma attacks in the treated kids while the placebo group was not so fortunate. If Dr. Urashima had followed the newest FNB recommendations, it is unlikely that 400 IU/day treatment arm would have done much of anything and some of the treated young teenagers may have come to serious harm without the vitamin D. Likewise, a randomized controlled prevention trial of adults by Professor Joan Lappe and colleagues at Creighton University, which showed dramatic improvements in the health of internal organs, used more than twice the FNB's new adult recommendations.
Finally, the FNB committee consulted with 14 vitamin D experts and – after reading these 14 different reports – the FNB decided to suppress their reports. Many of these 14 consultants are either famous vitamin D researchers, like Professor Robert Heaney at Creighton, or in the case of Professor Walter Willett at Harvard, the single best-known nutritionist in the world. So, the FNB will not tell us what Professors Heaney and Willett thought of their new report? Why not? Yesterday, the Vitamin D Council directed our attorney to file a federal Freedom of Information (FOI) request to the IOM's FNB for the release of these 14 reports.
I, my family, most of my friends, hundreds of patients, and thousands of readers of the Vitamin D Council newsletter, have been taking 5,000 IU/day for up to eight years. Not only have they reported no significant side-effects, indeed, they have reported greatly improved health in multiple organ systems. My advice: especially for pregnant women, continue taking 5,000 IU/day until your (OH)D] is between 50 ng/ml and 80 ng/ml (the vitamin D blood levels obtained by humans who live and work in the sun and the mid-point of the current reference ranges at all American laboratories). Gestational vitamin D deficiency is not only associated with rickets, but a significantly increased risk of neonatal pneumonia (2), a doubled risk for preeclampsia (3), a tripled risk for gestational diabetes (4), and a quadrupled risk for primary cesarean section (5).
Yesterday, the FNB failed millions of pregnant women whose as yet unborn babies will pay the price. Let us hope the FNB will comply with the spirit of "transparency" by quickly responding to our freedom of Information requests.
