Eating Nuts Greatly Reduces Your Risk of Heart Attack and Cancer...Eating nuts five or more times a week reduces your risk of heart attack by a whopping 60%. And in addition to this stunning statistic, research shows that people who eat more nuts are generally thinner. They also have lower levels of LDL cholesterol and better bones. A new study even links eating nuts to a lower risk for cancer and inflammation.

Kids May Need 10 Times More Vitamin D...May 28, 2008 -- Children and teens need 10 times more than the recommended dose of vitamin D, a clinical trial suggests.
"Our research reveals that vitamin D, at doses equivalent to 2,000 IU a day, is not only safe for adolescents, but it is actually necessary for achieving desirable vitamin D levels," study leader Ghada El-Hajj Fuleihan, MD, of the American University of Beirut Medical Center in Lebanon, says in a news release.

Is Hair Colour Worth Dying For?...
If you use permanent hair dye you are likely to be familiar with the burning sensation, irritation on the scalp and strong distinctive smell during the application of the dye. Have you ever wondered what the long term effects are on your body?
We may try to overlook the chemicals that we place on our hair and focus instead on the glamorous results, but as consumers we should be more sceptical about industry safety claims and become more knowledgeable about the products. In fact we should be demanding to know just how safe, or unsafe, hair dye really is.

Alzheimer’s Disease: No Time To Wait For New Drugs Before This Brain Disease Bankrupts Medicare; Best Hope Is A Red Wine Pill...Researchers around the world report that resveratrol, known as a red wine molecule, may be what the world is waiting for. It was recently described as “a boon for treating Alzheimer’s disease” by virtue of its ability to activate the Sirtuin 1 DNA repair gene. [Brain Research Brain Research Reviews, June 9, 2006 online]
However, don’t expect doctors to begin prescribing resveratrol for Alzheimer’s disease anytime soon. The problem is, modern medicine is advancing a number of prescription drugs, rather than resveratrol, to treat Alzheimer’s. The primary class of drugs used to treat this brain disease, called acetycholinesterase inhibitors, are not appropriate for 30-40% of individuals with Alzheimer’s and up to 29% of patients given these drugs stop taking them because of side effects. Seven patients must take the leading drug, Aricept/Cognex (donepezil), for 1 patient to experience stabilization (non-progression) of early-stage Alzheimer’s disease, and 42 patients for 1 patient to experience marked improvement. [Canadian Medical Association Journal 169: 557, 2003] Drugs in clinical trials are years away from gaining approval and the drug considered to be most promising, a monoclonal antibody, has recently been withdrawn due to side effects.

Vitamin D and cancer: maintaining levels key to protection?...
Ensuring levels of vitamin D never get low could be a way of protecting against cancer, suggests a new study from Germany.
Death from fatal cancer was reduced by 55 per cent amongst people with higher vitamin D levels, according to data collected from 3,299 patients taking part in the Ludwigshafen Risk and Cardiovascular Health study and reported in the journal Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention.
The study adds to a growing body of science supporting potential anti-cancer benefits of the vitamin, and increases the volume of calls for raising the recommended daily allowance from 400 IU to 1,000 IU.

Orthomolecular Doctors Urge U.S. Government to Raise Nutritional RDAs to Optimum Levels...
The Independent Vitamin Safety Review Panel has urged world governments to raise the recommended daily intakes of a variety of key nutrients, saying that the current levels are too low.
"Government-sponsored nutrient recommendations ... are not keeping pace with recent progress in nutrition research," the panel said. "While current official recommendations for vitamin A, iron, calcium, and some other nutrients are generally adequate, the public has been asked to consume far too little of many other key nutrients. Inadequate intake, and inadequate standards to judge intake, have resulted in widespread nutrient inadequacy, chronic disease, and an undernourished but overweight population."
The panel recommended increasing the recommended daily intake of vitamins B-1, B-2, B-6 and zinc to 25 mg, vitamin B-3 to 300 mg , B-12 to 500 micrograms, folic acid to 2 milligrams, vitamin C to 2,000 mg, vitamin D3 to 1,500 IU, vitamin E to 200 IU, magnesium to 500 mg, selenium to 200 micrograms and chromium to 200 micrograms.

Treat disease or slow down aging, what is the best approach?
Smoking is a risk factor for cancer and heart disease. Eating a high glycemic diet is a risk factor for type 2 diabetes, obesity, heart disease and cancer. But the number one risk factor for developing all chronic disease is......... AGING.
If you can slow down aging by turning the right genes on and the wrong ones off, you not only have a better quality of life, longer, but one that could be disease free.
This is what current studies are telling us. Epigenetics is the new understanding in biological medicine. We are not dealt a hand of cards from our parents that defines how and what we will die from, or even how soon. All of us have anti-aging genes called Sirtuins. According to recent research in mice and other organisms, turn on or stimulate Sirtuins and you can increase life span and stop the progression of all the Major age related diseases. Up until recently, the only way to do this was with caloric restriction. If you lower your caloric intake by say 30%, you turn on anti-aging genes. I find that if you adopt a low glycemic diet, your appetite will eventually go down and you can eat 1200-1500 calories a day and not be hungry. In addition to this, there are phyonutrients we can take that turn on good genes and turn the bad ones off. Do you understand what this means? This information has only come out in the last 10 years and is only now getting out to the masses. Nutrients like Resveratrol, Astaxanthin, Alpha Lipoic Acid, Acetyl L-Carnitine, Green Tea Ext, Grape Seed Ext, CoQ10, D3, Omega 3 Fatty Acids, all have a huge effect on altering Gene Expression and therefore altering health and wellness.

Hiding the Truth About Losing the War on Cancer ...
For well over half a century we have been promised by mainstream medicine that a cure or major breakthrough for cancer was just around the corner. Every year we see promising new drugs and therapies announced. Yet every year we also see more people contract cancer and more people die of cancer.
Instead of focusing on natural and safe methods of prevention and treatment, we continue to treat by using surgery, chemotherapy and radiation to cut out, poison out and burn out the symptoms of cancer while leaving the underlying causes untreated -- and we continue to largely ignore the role that proper diet, nutrition and lifestyle plays in preventing and helping cure cancer.
Although surgery does have some success against a limited number of cancers, chemo and radiation achieve at best a 3% increase in length of survival and true cures from cancer (meaning that the patient becomes completely cancer free and the cancer never returns). The fact is that for those who are diagnosed with cancer, after the third year the survival rate for those who had no treatment at all increases steadily and for those who had mainstream treatment it decreases steadily.(1)
Despite the dismal record, those in the $300 Billion a year cancer industry appear determined to maintain a stranglehold on treatment. One way they do so is to suppress natural alternatives. Another is to misreport their success rates by altering statistics to make their success appear to be much better than it actually is.

Prozac, used by 40m people, does not work say scientists...
Analysis of unseen trials and other data concludes it is no better than placebo
Prozac, the bestselling antidepressant taken by 40 million people worldwide, does not work and nor do similar drugs in the same class, according to a major review released today.
The study examined all available data on the drugs, including results from clinical trials that the manufacturers chose not to publish at the time. The trials compared the effect on patients taking the drugs with those given a placebo or sugar pill.
When all the data was pulled together, it appeared that patients had improved - but those on placebo improved just as much as those on the drugs.
The only exception is in the most severely depressed patients, according to the authors - Prof Irving Kirsch from the department of psychology at Hull University and colleagues in the US and Canada. But that is probably because the placebo stopped working so well, they say, rather than the drugs having worked better.
"Given these results, there seems little reason to prescribe antidepressant medication to any but the most severely depressed patients, unless alternative treatments have failed," says Kirsch. "This study raises serious issues that need to be addressed surrounding drug licensing and how drug trial data is reported."

Dietary Supplement Fanatics Healthiest Of All...
They may not be laughing at vitamin supplement fanatics much longer. According to an authoritative study just published in The Nutrition Journal, avid dietary supplement users who, on average, take 17 different supplements daily, were judged to be far healthier than adults who just take a single supplement such as a common multivitamin, or who don’t take dietary supplements at all.
The study, headed by Gladys Block of the University of California at Berkeley, is the first to examine measurable health parameters among consumers who take a broad array of dietary supplements, such as vitamins C, E, D, fish or flaxseed oil, lecithin, coenzyme Q10, glucosamine, B complex and others. Nearly nine in ten multi-supplement users consumed 20 or more different kinds of supplements throughout the year.

Hawaiian Treasure, Macadamia Nuts Good For The Heart...
Incorporating macadamia nuts into a heart healthy diet can reduce cardiovascular disease risks according to Penn State researchers.
"We looked at macadamia nuts because they are not currently included in the health claim for tree nuts, while other tree nuts are recommended as part of a healthy diet," says Dr. Amy E. Griel, recent Ph.D. recipient in nutritional sciences. "Macadamia nuts have higher levels of monounsaturated fats, like those found in olive oil compared with other tree nuts."
The researchers used a controlled feeding study to compare a heart-healthy diet with 1.5 ounces -- a small handful -- of macadamia nuts to a standard American diet. The participants had slightly elevated cholesterol levels, normal blood pressure and were not taking lipid lowering drugs. Researchers randomly assigned participants to either the macadamia nut diet or the standard American diet and provided all meals for the participants for five weeks. The participants then switched diets and continued eating only food provided by the researchers for another five weeks.
The Healthy Heart diet with macadamia nuts did reduce total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and triglyceride levels compared with the standard American diet. "We observed a reduction in LDL similar to that seen with other tree nuts like walnuts and almonds," says Griel.

White bread may bring greater disease risk...
Foods with a high glycemic index (GI), such as most white breads, lead to a higher risk of certain health problems, according to researchers at the University of Sydney, Australia.
The study found that high blood glucose led to a higher risk of type 2 diabetes and heart disease, and was also linked to gall stones and some types of cancer, providing further evidence that could trigger greater demand low GI and multi grain foods.
The researchers concluded: "Low-GI and/or low glycemic load (GL) diets are independently associated with a reduced risk of certain chronic diseases. In diabetes and heart disease, the protection is comparable with that seen for whole grain and high fibre intakes. The findings support the hypothesis that higher postprandial glycemia is a universal mechanism for disease progression."

Landmark Study Finds Obesity to be More Dangerous to Health than Smoking...
Being seriously overweight may reduce a person's life expectancy even more than smoking, according to a report by 250 leading scientists. According to the Foresight Report on obesity in the United Kingdom, having a body mass index higher than 30 (the definition used for "obese") decreases a person's life expectancy by an average of 9 years. Men with a body mass index higher than 45, however, have their life expectancy reduced by 13 years. In contrast, being a smoker reduces life expectancy by an average of 10 years.
Currently, 25 percent of adults in the United Kingdom are classified as obese. But the report projected that if current trends continue, 60 percent of British men will be obese by the year 2050, along with 50 percent of women and 25 percent of children.
Along with this increase, the report projected a 70 percent increase in Type-2 Diabetes, a 30 percent increase in strokes, a 20 percent increase in cases of coronary disease, and an increase in the incidence of certain cancers.
The report warned that the obesity crisis is exacerbated by the fact that being overweight is coming to be seen as "normal."

Astaxanthin: The Little-Known Miracle Nutrient for Inflammation, Anti-Aging, Athletic Endurance and More...
Every once in a very great while, I discover a natural medicine so astonishing that I feel compelled to share it with you. The verb "discover" is actually not to my credit, by the way; Mother Nature created this natural medicine eons ago, and it's been present in trace amounts in aquatic ecosystems for over a billion years. In this article, I'm going to reveal the name of this natural medicine, what health benefits it provides to us, and how to get some right now. But first, before revealing the name, I want to share some of the numerous health benefits with you so you get the full picture of just how significant this substance can be in enhancing your health. As always, I have absolutely no financial ties to this product, and I earn nothing if you choose to purchase it. I do, however, buy and consume this product myself on a regular basis, as you'll see below.
Did you ever notice how the drug companies get excited when they find a drug that just slightly alters the risk of a single disease? I remember hearing all the hype about a particular cancer drug made by Big Pharma. It was called a "miracle" drug that needed to be fast-tracked so it could start saving lives. When I looked at the research, however, it only turned out to prevent cancer in one woman out of two hundred (a 0.5% reduction in the risk of breast cancer). Gee, that's not much get excited about. And yet they called it a "miracle" drug!
Well imagine if there were a natural substance that operated at many different biochemical levels at once, providing all the following health benefits (yes, from a single source!):
• Reduces proliferation of breast cancer tumor cells by 40%
• Protects the brain from dementia and Alzheimer's
• Greatly reduces inflammation and joint pain
• Reduces oxidative damage to your DNA by 40% (even at low doses)
• Greatly increases endurance, muscle recovery and workout performance
• Reduces the risk of cancer
• Reduces blood sugar level in diabetics and prediabetics
• Improves fertility while decreasing the rate of stillborn births
• Promotes cardiovascular health, reduces C-Reactive Proteins (CRP)
• Reduces or eliminates carpal tunnel syndrome
• Boosts immune function and helps the body resist infections
• Protects the stomach from ulcers and invasive bacteria
• Protects the kidneys from damage due to high blood sugar
• Causes cancer cells to commit suicide (apoptosis)
• Greatly improves sperm quality, motility, and sperm count
• Prevents asthma by normalizing histamine levels
• Protects the body from highly oxidative foods like fried foods
In addition, I've found that this natural medicine:
• Greatly protects eye health, reduces cataracts and prevents UV damage to the eyes
• Makes skin look younger and functions as a natural internal sunscreen that prevents DNA damage and sunburn
• Protects the body from the dangerous oxidizing effects of Vioxx and COX-2 inhibitors, meaning that is can actually reduce the harmful side effects and deaths caused by other anti-inflammatory pharmaceuticals

Chemical Used in Non-Stick Cookware Continues to Prove Its Toxicity ...
There seems to be more evidence mounting in the ongoing Perflurooctanoic Acid (PFOA) debate. PFOA is used in the production of Teflon and other non-stick surfaces and is found in the packaging of candy bars, microwave popcorn, fast food packaging like french fry and pizza boxes, bakery items, drinks, paper plates, and a host of "stain resistant" products such as carpets. Other well-known brand names containing PFOA include Stainmaster, Scotchgard, SilverStone, Fluron, Supra, Excalibur, Greblon, Xylon, Duracote, Resistal, Autograph and T-Fal. Although the DuPont Corporation has stated that PFOA is only used in the manufacturing process and should not be found in the final products, it must be noted that the chemical is found in the bloodstream of 95% of American men, women, and children. It seems that no one is quite certain how the chemical residue has made it into the bloodstream of such a large number of people if it is not located in the final product. Research has shown that PFOA was still present in the blood for approximately four years after exposure and levels were only reduced by half. It has been implicated by some research to cause increased instances of cancer in the pancreas, liver, testicles, and mammary glands. Also increased were instances of miscarriage, weight loss, thyroid problems, weaker immune systems, and low organ weights.

Diabetes And Alzheimer's Disease Linked By Salk Institute Study...Diabetic individuals have a significantly higher risk of developing Alzheimer's disease but the molecular connection between the two remains unexplained. Now, researchers at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies identified the probable molecular basis for the diabetes - Alzheimer's interaction.
In a study published in the current online issue of Neurobiology of Aging, investigators led by David R. Schubert, Ph.D., professor in the Cellular Neurobiology Laboratory, report that the blood vessels in the brain of young diabetic mice are damaged by the interaction of elevated blood glucose levels characteristic of diabetes and low levels of beta amyloid, a peptide that clumps to form the senile plaques that riddle the brains of Alzheimer's patients.

High-fructose corn syrup, high fat diet cause severe liver damage...A diet high in fat and in high fructose corn syrup may cause severe liver problems in people with a sedentary lifestyle, according to a study conducted by researchers from Saint Louis University and presented this year at the Digestive Diseases Week meeting in Washington, D.C.
Researchers fed mice a diet that was 40 percent fat and high in high fructose corn syrup for 16 weeks. In contrast to other studies, where mice have been fed a regulated amount, the animals in the study were allowed to eat as much as they wanted. They were kept sedentary and prevented from exercising.
"We wanted to mirror the kind of diet many Americans subsist on, so the high fat content is about the same you'd find in a typical McDonald's meal, and the high fructose corn syrup translates to about eight cans of soda a day in a human diet, which is not far off with what some people consume," said Brent Tetri, M.D., an associate professor of internal medicine at Saint Louis University Liver Center.

Cup Of Coffee A Day Could Help Protect Against Alzheimer's Disease, Study Suggests...
A daily dose of caffeine blocks the disruptive effects of high cholesterol that scientists have linked to Alzheimer's disease. A study in the open access publication, Journal of Neuroinflammation revealed that caffeine equivalent to just one cup of coffee a day could protect the blood-brain barrier (BBB) from damage that occurred with a high-fat diet. The BBB protects the central nervous system from the rest of the body's circulation, providing the brain with its own regulated microenvironment. Previous studies have shown that high levels of cholesterol break down the BBB which can then no longer protect the central nervous system from the damage caused by blood borne contamination. BBB leakage occurs in a variety of neurological disorders such as Alzheimer's disease.

Popular Energy Drinks Cause Tooth Erosion, Study Shows...
For more than 10 years, energy drinks in the United States have been on the rise, promising consumers more "oomph" in their day. In fact, it is estimated that the energy drink market will hit $10 billion by 2010. While that may be great news for energy drink companies, it could mean a different story for the oral health of consumers who sometimes daily rely on these drinks for that extra boost. Previous scientific research findings have helped to warn consumers that the pH (potential of hydrogen) levels in beverages such as soda could lead to tooth erosion, the breakdown of tooth structure caused by the effect of acid on the teeth that leads to decay. The studies revealed that, whether diet or regular, ice tea or root beer, the acidity level in popular beverages that consumers drink every day contributes to the erosion of enamel.

Both of these have cancer-fighting properties individually, but their super foods super power for fighting prostate cancer in men dramatically increases when consumed together.
“When tomatoes and broccoli are eaten together, we see an additive effect. We think it’s because different bioactive compounds in each food work on different anti-cancer pathways,” said University of Illinois food science and human nutrition professor John Erdman who led the study.
Researchers implanted prostate cells into laboratory rats. Some of the rats were fed a diet of 10 percent tomato powder and 10 percent broccoli powder. These rats did better than the other rats that were fed just tomato powder, just broccoli powder, or just lycopene, which is the red pigment in tomatoes believed to have potent health benefits. Another set of rats was fed finasteride, a prostate drug, whereas a last set of rats were castrated.

Skip the Bacon and Stay Thin to Avoid Cancer, Says World Cancer Research Fund ...
The World Cancer Research Fund has issued detailed recommendations on how to decrease cancer risk through lifestyle changes, including staying thin and avoiding bacon or ham. A panel of nine teams of scientists reviewed more than 7,000 studies on the relationship between lifestyle choices and cancer. "If people are interested in reducing their cancer risk, then following the recommendations is the way to do it," Professor Martin Wiseman said. "Cancer is not a fate, it is a matter of risk, and you can adjust those risks by how you behave. It is very important that people feel that they are in control of what they do."

Disease prevention is nothing more than an anti-aging program...
Long before I became a nutritionist and life extensionist I was into wine as a hobby. For over the last 36 years I have a drank about 2 glasses of wine every night with dinner. When I understood the studies that red wine was best, because it contained nutrients from the skin, seeds and compounds like Resveratrol, I switched primarily to red wine, as my choice. Good quality wines like Cabernet, Pinot Noir, Zinfandel and the like have varying degrees of these coupounds known as polyphenols, proanthocyanidins(OPCs), resveratrol etc. Over the last 10 years I have been focusing on nutraceuticals that contains therapeutic amounts of these and other compounds that can be taken to prevent aging, and best of all, age related diseases.
I formulate products that contain these substances like ECGC, from green tea ext, N-acetylcysteine, Alpha-lipoic acid, CoQ10, grape seed ext, spirulina, and others to make taking large amounts, easy and convenient.
Even better yet than Resveratrol, Protandim is a new product that triggers over 500 survival genes.
Protandim has the following benefits...
1) Increases glutathione by 300%;
2) Increases activity of SOD (superoxide dismutase) and CAT (catalase) antioxidant enzymes by 54%;
3) 48% decrease in plasma TBARS, a marker of lipid peroxidation and oxidative stress;
4) A 57% decrease in plasma osteopontin, a fibrosis-promoting factor linked to heart failure;
5) 35% increase in beneficial, protective plasma PON1 activity, an enzyme thought to protect against atherosclerosis by preventing the oxidation of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol.
6) Suppresses cancer tumors
7) Antioxidant, provides more antioxidant power than any food or conventional supplement.
8) Anti-inflammatory
9) Anti-fibrotic properties
I also eat lots of sardines, blue berries, raspberries, black beans etc for there amazing health benefits and The Ideal Diet.

Wine. No other beverage has attracted the attention of modern medicine like this drink. Although it is most widely known for its benefits for the heart, wine has benefits against cancer, dementia, and other age-related diseases. Researchers in Denmark recently looked at 25,000 people to find out what drinking alcohol does to mortality and discovered that wine drinkers slash their overall risk of dying from any cause by about 40%.
Chemists took wine apart years ago to find out what makes it tick. Basically, it contains a host of plant compounds. Unfortunately, resveratrol and some of the other beneficial components got shelved as “toxicants,” and nobody paid much attention to them until a scientist tried to figure out why the French can eat so much fat and not get heart disease. It turns out that part of the answer to the “French paradox” is resveratrol found in red wine.

Dementia is a brain disorder that seriously affects a person’s ability to carry out daily activities. The most common form of dementia among older people is Alzheimer’s disease (AD), which initially involves the parts of the brain that control thought, memory, and language. Although scientists are learning more every day, right now they still do not know what causes AD, and there is no cure.
Scientists think that as many as 4.5 million Americans suffer from AD. The disease usually begins after age 60, and risk goes up with age. While younger people also may get AD, it is much less common. About 5 percent of men and women ages 65 to 74 have AD, and nearly half of those age 85 and older may have the disease. It is important to note, however, that AD is not a normal part of aging. Prevention is the key and there is good news on that front. The acetyl group that is part of acetyl-L-carnitine contributes to the production of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, which is required for mental function. Several double-blind clinical trials suggest that acetyl-L-carnitine delays the progression of Alzheimer’s disease and enhances overall performance in some people with Alzheimer’s disease.
Several clinical trials have found that acetyl-L-carnitine supplementation delays the progression of Alzheimer’s disease, improves memory, and enhances overall performance in some people with Alzheimer’s disease. Overall, most short-term studies have shown clinical benefits, and most long-term studies (one year) have shown a reduction in the rate of deterioration.

Alpha-Lipoic Acid and Acetyl-L-Carnitine...
Two dietary supplements straight off the health food store shelf put the spark back into aging rats, and might do the same for aging baby boomers, according to a study at the University of California, Berkeley, and Children’s Hospital Oakland Research Institute.
A team of researchers led by Bruce N. Ames, professor of molecular and cell biology at UC Berkeley, fed older rats two chemicals normally found in the body’s cells and available as dietary supplements: acetyl-L-carnitine and an antioxidant, alpha-lipoic acid.
In three articles in the February 19 issue of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Ames and his colleagues report the surprising results. Not only did the older rats do better on memory tests, they had more pep, and the energy-producing organelles in their cells worked better.
“With the two supplements together, these old rats got up and did the Macarena,” said Ames, also a researcher at Children’s Hospital Oakland Research Institute (CHORI). “The brain looks better, they are full of energy—everything we looked at looks more like a young animal.”
“The animals seem to have much more vigor and are much more active than animals not on this diet, signaling massive improvement to these animals’ health and well-being,” said former UC Berkeley post-doctoral fellow Tory M. Hagen, now an assistant professor at the Linus Pauling Institute at Oregon State University, Corvallis. “And we also see a reversal in loss of memory. That is a dual-track improvement that is significant and unique. This is really starting to explode and move out of the realm of basic research into people.”

The protein, amyloid beta peptide (AB), is the major constituent of the senile plaques found in Alzheimer brains, and it generates oxygen free radicals that attack and kill brain cells, said Allan Butterfield, Ph.D., professor of chemistry and director of the Center for Membrane Sciences of the University of Kentucky. He presented his findings at a national meeting of the American Chemical Society, the world's largest scientific society. Now, Dr. Butterfield says, he has become the first to see the actual death and survival of brain cells in tests of AB and antioxidants.

Wine May Protect Against Dementia, Study Suggests...
ScienceDaily (Apr. 13, 2008) — There may be constituents in wine that protect against dementia. This is shown in research from the Sahlgrenska Academy at University of Gothenburg in Sweden. The findings are based on 1,458 women who were included in the so-called Population Study of Women from 1968. When they were examined by physicians they were asked to report how often they drank wine, beer, and liquor by selecting from seven categories on a scale from 'never' to 'daily.' The researchers know nothing about how much they drank on each occasion, or how correct the estimates were. For each beverage the women reported having drunk more than once a month, they were classified as a consumer of that particular beverage.
Thirty-four years after the first study, 162 women had been diagnosed with dementia. The results show that among those women who reported that they drank wine a considerably lower proportion suffered from dementia, whereas this correlation was not found among those who had reported that they regularly drank beer or liquor.

CANCER
Vitamin D emerged as a protective factor in a study of more than 3,000 adults who underwent a colonoscopy; there was a significantly lower risk of advanced cancerous lesions among those with the highest vitamin D intake, according to the National Institutes of Health. A four-year trial at Creighton University, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, found that the higher the level of vitamin D, the lower the risk of all cancers in post-menopausal women.
MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS
An analysis of two large Nurses' Health Study groups found a reduced risk of MS was associated with vitamin D supplementation, according to a 2004 report in Neurology.
DIABETES
A study published in the Lancet in 2001 concluded that children who were given vitamin D supplementation were less likely to develop Type 1 diabetes.
RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS
In the Iowa Women's Health Study, women consuming higher levels of vitamin D showed a reduced risk for rheumatoid arthritis.
CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE
A study in the journal Circulation found that those with low vitamin D levels had a 62 percent increased risk of heart failure.
FALLS & FRACTURES
Seniors taking a high daily dose of vitamin D experience 72 percent fewer fractures, according to a study in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society. A daily supplement of 800 units of vitamin D could prevent a quarter of hip fractures in older people, suggests a study in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
ASTHMA
In a study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, children of mothers with lower intakes of vitamin D during pregnancy were more likely to develop asthma.
FIBROMYALGIA
Some researchers believe this disorder could actually be vitamin D deficiency, which can cause muscle weakness and pain. One Canada study, published in 2001 in the journal Rheumatology, found that half the fibromyalgia patients tested had low levels of vitamin D.

Begin with the end in mind... Consider making changes now that can give you good health when you are older.
Dynamic changes in health can be achieved by decreasing some things in our diet like sugars, and high glycemic foods and beverages, and by increasing the amount of healthy foods along with supplements. Orthomolecular Nutrition teaches us that taking the RDA, the Recommended Daily Allowance, of nutrients is not enough to prevent chronic illness. This is true as well, when we don't eat enough vegetables and fruits each day. One example below is copper. Greens contain lots of the trace mineral copper, which when eaten in large amount's, might reduce enlarged hearts. Here are some examples of things we should do less of and powerful nutrients that we might want to consider taking more of.

Vitamin C: There May Be a Modern Chronic Deficiency ...
NaturalNews) Vitamin C. Mmmm . . . maybe you think of a tall glass of Florida orange juice. Or maybe you grab it at the beginning of the cold season. But would you associate it with cardiovascular disease (CVD) or cancer? Maybe you should. According to an article published in October 2007, in the Journal of Nutrition, there is accumulating scientific evidence that very large (therapeutic) doses of vitamin C may be effective in treating both CVD and cancer. In addition, some scientists have hypothesized that the onset of these common degenerative diseases may actually be due to a vitamin C deficiency in the general population. Dr. Steven Hickey and Dr. Hilary Roberts with the Vitamin C Foundation and authors of the book 'Ascorbate: the Science of Vitamin C', have gone so far as to suggest that heart disease is actually a chronic form of the vitamin C deficiency disease called scurvy. If we ate the recommended 5 servings of fruits and vegetables per day, we'd easily consume double the RDA for vitamin C and likely a lot more. According to Linus Pauling, a two time Nobel Prize winning chemist who is noted for his vitamin C research, our early human ancestors probably consumed 2,300 mg/day to 9,500 mg/day of vitamin C from their plant-based diet. This is 25 to 100 times more than today's RDA for an adult man!

High-dose copper reverses heart enlargement ...
(NaturalNews) Relatively high doses of copper may help reverse unhealthy enlargement of the heart, according to a new study published in the Journal of Experimental Medicine. The research was led by scientists at the University of Louisville Medical Center in Kentucky, in collaboration with Agricultural Research Service scientists from the Grand Forks Human Nutrition Research Center in North Dakota. The researchers fed a group of mice with enlarged hearts the equivalent of three times the human recommended daily allowance of copper. The mice that had been fed copper experienced a reversal of cardiac hypertrophy -- enlarged heart -- symptoms, whereas the non-supplemented mice did not.

Dr. Matthias Rath - Cellular Medicine - How Cancer Develops...
Dr. Rath identified a common pathomechanism of all cancers, which is the degradation of the surrounding connective tissue, as a precondition for cancer metastasis. He suggested that the amino acid lysine and vitamin C could effectively control this process.
Cancer develops when cells in one part of the body begin to grow out of control. Normal body cells grow, divide, and die in a systematic way. During the early years of a person’s life, normal cells divide more rapidly until the person becomes an adult. After that, cells in most parts of the body divide only to replace worn out or dying cells and to repair injuries. In the case of cancer cells, the genetic program that regulates their growth cycle is interrupted, causing the cells to become immortal and constantly divide. Cancer cell growth never stops, and it results in the formation of a tumor mass. To stop cancer metastasis, the activity of MMPs must be inhibited. Dr. Rath and his team of researchers at the Dr. Rath Research Institute have identified a specific combination of nutrients that can inhibit the activity of MMPs and stop the spread of cancer cells. Further research has led to the development of a nutrient combination, including vitamin C, the amino acids L-lysine and L-proline and a green tea extract known as Epigallocatechin Gallate (EGCG), that works synergistically to stop the spread of cancer cells through connective tissue.

The Harmful Effects of Sugar and Choosing Healthy Alternatives...
(NaturalNews) Most of us have heard the good advice that we need to eat less sugar - and rightly so. However, despite the numerous warnings by health authorities of the ill effects of sugar, the majority of the population is still consuming sugar on a daily basis in some form or other. “Sugar” is both a broad category and a misleading one. Let’s examine it for our health’s sake. We do not have to consume white, refined sugar to be consuming sugar. Sugar includes glucose, fructose (as in fruit sugar), lactose (as in milk), sucrose (as in table sugar), maltose or malts (as in rice malt and honey), jam (contains concentrated juice, which is high in fruit sugar), maple syrup, corn syrup, palm sugar (traditionally used in macrobiotic cooking), and the very deceiving organic brown sugar, which is not all that different from white sugar. Even alcohol is a sugar. All of these sugars are problematic in many different ways.

NAC as a Natural Treatment for Cocaine Addiction?...
NaturalNews) Three recent clinical studies, two about cocaine addiction and one about compulsive gambling, examine the role of a simple amino acid in normalizing brain chemistry of those with addiction. Drug addiction and various forms of pathological gambling has widely ruined personal finances, family cohesiveness and health. Relapse rates are extremely high. These studies offer much hope for an inexpensive, non-toxic option for healing.
N-acetylcysteine, a form of the sulfur-containing amino acid cysteine is a precursor to the brain neurotransmitter glutamate. There is observational evidence that low levels of glutamate in the brain will increase compulsive and addictive behaviors and intensify cravings. Taking NAC by mouth has been shown to increase glutamate concentrations in the regions of the brain (the nucleus accumbens) which, when low in glutamate, promotes addictive behavior.

Can you dramatically extend your health span with diet and supplementation?
Could the right diet along with supplementation possibly take 20 years off the biological age of your brain, make middle aged cells function much younger, improve memory & cognitive performance, double your energy and dramatically reduce your chances of getting cardiovascular disease, cancer, type 2 diabetes, and neurological conditions?
Too good to be true... If research done on mice extends to humans, which we feel it does, then perhaps yes... In fact, recent studies on humans have already been done with amazing results.
Life extension is a hot topic these days, with baby boomers aging and wanting to stay active and young. More than life extension, health span is what most of us really want. The ability to live a long life with comparatively good health and vigor, free from degenerative disease, until very near death. Researchers say the best way to accomplish that has everything to do with diet, exercise, healthy lifestyle habits and micro nutrient intake. I recommend what I call The Ideal Diet, which is a diet that mimics what our ancestors ate and is anti-inflammatory in nature. In addition to that diet, I take a powerful combination of the nutrients discussed below everyday for nutritional insurance. Take some time and read the following studies. Prevention is so much cheaper than treatment, and a by product of this protection is, quality of life.

Lipoic Acid Explored As Anti-aging Compound...
Researchers announced they have identified the mechanism of action of lipoic acid, a remarkable compound that in animal experiments appears to slow down the process of aging, improve blood flow, enhance immune function and perform many other functions. "Our studies have shown that mice supplemented with lipoic acid have a cognitive ability, behavior, and genetic expression of almost 100 detoxification and antioxidant genes that are comparable to that of young animals," Hagen said. "They aren't just living longer, they are living better -- and that's the goal we're after."
What the OSU researchers now believe is that the role of lipoic acid is not so much a direct one to benefit cells, but rather an indirect aid that "kick starts" declining function in cells and helps them recover the functions that came more easily and naturally in young animals.

Compounds Rejuvenate Rats, May Aid Humans...
Researchers in the Linus Pauling Institute at Oregon State University and the University of California at Berkeley have identified a combination of dietary supplements that dramatically improves both the activity, energy level and cognitive function of old rats. The studies were done with a combination of two compounds that occur naturally, acetyl-l-carnitine and an antioxidant, alpha-lipoic acid. Previous work has shown that either of these compounds may have value in addressing some of the physical and mental deterioration associated with aging, but the newest research suggested a combination of the two works far better than either one separately.
"After just a month, older rats whose diet was supplemented with these two compounds were about twice as active as our control rats, which remained largely inactive," said Tory Hagen, an assistant professor in OSU's Linus Pauling Institute. "They also had a much better memory and cognitive performance, measured by their ability to remember objects and spatial orientation."

Broad-Spectrum Effects of Grape Seed Extract...
It is clear that France gave us the Statue of Liberty to protect us and french fries to kill us.
They themselves are not harmed by their fatty food, but we Americans are. Despite high blood pressure and cholesterol, a Frenchman’s risk of dying from heart disease is the lowest of any Western industrialized nation—up to 50% lower than in America and parts of Europe. The “French paradox” has become a cottage industry all unto itself. The most consistent explanation is that wine contains factors that keep the French from having heart attacks. Some have argued that it is the alcohol itself, and there is support for this argument. But the strongest evidence for what is behind the heart-protective effects of wine centers around the non-alcoholic part. In this respect, red wine is the winner, but white wine also is a contender. Both contain powerful antioxidants and other factors that protect the heart and vascular system. Grapevines contain dozens of different phytocompounds that have different effects on different areas of the human body. The most studied of these phytocompounds are quercetin, resveratrol, proanthocyanidins (from seeds), and anthocyanins (which give purple and red grapes their color). All of these phytocompounds are classified as polyphenols. The seeds of grapes contain many good things. First are the antioxidants, more rightly called super-antioxidants. They’re not only more powerful than standard antioxidants like vitamin E, but also more diverse. The factors contained in grape seed go way beyond the ordinary. Running the gambit from vaporizing the effects of environmental stress to intercepting free radicals created by food, the compounds in grape seed extract provide broad-spectrum antioxidant protection. Scientific studies document multiple effects, including antibiotic, anti-tumor, anti-diabetic, anti-ulcer, pro-heart and arteries, and anti-brain aging. Proanthocyanidins are the main active ingredients in grape seed extract that go after “molecular sharks” otherwise known as free radicals. They make up about 90% of grape seed extract. Various versions are all united by a similar chemical structure and possess powerful antioxidant activity15—20 times stronger than that of vitamin E and 50 times stronger than that of vitamin C. The “super-antioxidant” effects are neatly summed up in a study showing that pretreatment with grape seed extract reduces DNA fragmentation in the brain by a whopping 50% and in the liver by 47% after exposure to a strong chemical. Proanthocyanidins, along with resveratrol and quercetin, are some of the healthy factors in wine.

Green Tea Boosts Production Of Detox Enzymes, Rendering Cancerous Chemicals Harmless...
Concentrated chemicals derived from green tea dramatically boosted production of a group of key detoxification enzymes in people with low levels of these beneficial proteins, according to researchers at Arizona Cancer Center. These findings, published in the August issue of Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention, a journal of the American Association for Cancer Research, suggest that a green tea concentrate might help some people strengthen their metabolic defense against toxins capable of causing cancer.
In a study of 42 people, the concentrate -- composed of chemicals known as green tea catechins in amounts equal to that found in 8-16 cups of green tea -- boosted production of the enzymes, which belong to the glutathione S-transferase (GST) family, by as much as 80 percent in some participants. Green tea has long been of interest to researchers given studies that have shown populations in which it is often consumed, such as the Chinese and Japanese, generally have lower rates of cancer. To find out if green tea can protect against cancer, the NCI has sponsored a number of rigorous scientific studies testing capsules of the extract, Polyphenon E, that have been prepared in Japan to meet exact specifications. These pills contain epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), a catechin known for its potent antioxidant activity, and are currently being tested against a variety of cancers in clinical trials. "This is the first clinical study to show proof that chemicals in green tea can increase detoxification enzymes in humans," Chow said. "There may be other mechanism in play by which green tea may protect against cancer development, but this is a good place to start."

Dr. Donald Trump, who treats prostate cancer, has noticed a disturbing link "Seventy percent of my patients have vitamin D deficiency," he said.
The sunshine vitamin is new area for cancer research. A study in post-menopausal women shows high doses of vitamin D cut the risk of cancer by 60 percent. Another recent study shows vitamin D deficiency increases the risk of colon, breast and prostate cancer by 30 to 50 percent.

Vitamin K may reverse arterial calcification - study...
Arterial calcification, a process of hardening of the arteries, may be inhibited and even reversed with supplementation with high-dose vitamin K, suggests an animal study. Atherosclerosis, known as hardening or furring of the arteries is a key risk factor for cardiovascular disease, the cause of over 50 per cent of deaths in Europe and the US and estimated to cost the economy …"Given that arterial calcifications are predictive of cardiovascular events, regression of arterial calcification may help to reduce the risk of death in people with chronic kidney disease and coronary artery disease," wrote lead author Leon Schurgers from VitaK at Maastricht University.

Cod liver oil relieves rheumatoid arthritis pain...
From Life Extension Update
Cod liver oil supplements reduce rheumatoid arthritis drug requirement...
Rheumatoid arthritis patients may be able to reduce their dose of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) by adding cod liver oil to their daily regimen, according to an article published online on March 24, 2008 in the journal Rheumatology. Cod liver oil contains the omega-3 fatty acids eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), which can help inhibit the production of inflammatory prostaglandins and leukotrienes derived from arachidonic acid (an omega-6 fatty acid), and increase the production of less inflammatory substances.
For the current study, researchers at centers in Dundee and Edinburgh, Scotland enrolled 97 rheumatoid arthritis patients who were being treated with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Participants were randomized to receive a placebo or
a daily dose of ten capsules containing 10 grams of cod liver oil (which provided 2.2 grams of omega-3 essential fatty acids plus vitamins A, D, and E) for nine months. The subjects were evaluated for rheumatoid arthritis disease activity and safety at the beginning of the study and at the fourth, twelfth, twenty-fourth and thirty-sixth week.
After 12 weeks, the participants were instructed to gradually reduce their medication usage and to discontinue their drugs if possible. Thirty-nine percent of those who received cod liver oil were able to reduce their NSAID dose by over 30 percent without experiencing a worsening of symptoms, while only 10 percent of those in the placebo group were able to do so. Among those who completed the full nine months fish oil therapy, 59 percent successfully lowered their medication dose. They also experienced a modest improvement in pain symptoms compared with the placebo group by the end of the trial.
To the author’s knowledge, the study is the largest to investigate the effect of omega-3 fatty acids in rheumatoid arthritis. “Fish oil supplementation should be considered in rheumatoid arthritis patients to help them reduce their NSAID intake in order to attenuate the risks of gastrointestinal and cardiovascular adverse events associated with these drugs,” the authors conclude.

If you are taking calcium for your bones, or the drug Fosamax, you need to read this...
Calcium is important for your health. If you eat lots of dairy products, you most likely are getting enough calcium from your diet. If you are lactose intolerant or don't eat dairy, then added calcium in supplemental form is critical, especially as you get older. Some investigators are concerned about the increasing amounts of phosphates in the diet which can be attributed to phosphoric acid in soft drinks and phosphate additives in a number of commercially prepared foods. Diets high in phosphorus, if sustained, elevate PTH levels which could have an adverse effect on bone mineral content, but this effect has only been observed in humans on diets that were high in phosphorus and low in calcium. If you are diagnosed with bone loss anywhere in your body, doctors usually recommend adding calcium or now, the drug Fosamax. This is a bad approach, if you understand biochemistry. Taking calcium by itself can be harmful, and the body requires other nutrients like vitamin D, K, Magnesium, Zinc, Copper, Manganese, as well as the trace minerals Boron, Molybdenum, Silicon and Vanadium, in order to metabolize it properly. Calcium by itself can increase your odds of cardiovascular disease and calcium infiltration into the soft tissues, where it does not belong. I have formulated 3 products designed to support bone health. BONE MINERALS would work for most people who do not have severe bone loss, but want to prevent deficiencies from developing. With bone loss issues, a more aggressive approach is needed, depending if it occurs mainly in the large bones, or in periodontal disease, or both. For these more complicated issues, I have formulated 2 other products, BONE HEALTH and PERIODONTAL HEALTH.
Here are some studies that will help you understand calcium better and whether a drug approach makes sense for you.

Heart risk linked to calcium supplements...
WASHINGTON - Older women who take calcium supplements to maintain bone strength may have an increased risk of heart attack, researchers in New Zealand said on Tuesday.
The researchers cautioned that they do not consider their findings the definitive word on the subject, but said the higher heart attack risk they saw merits further study.
“This effect could outweigh any benefits on bone from calcium supplements,” researchers led by Ian Reid of the University of Auckland wrote in the British Medical Journal.

Coronary Calcium Testing Predicts Future Heart Ailments, Study Shows...
Calcium deposits in coronary arteries provide a strong predictor for possible future heart attacks and cardiac diseases, and detecting such deposits can be valuable for promoting overall cardiac health, according to a study led by the University of California, Irvine and appearing in the March 28 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine. The researchers found that participants with moderate deposit amounts had more than a seven times greater risk of cardiac heart disease compared to people with no coronary calcium buildup. Participants with large deposit amounts faced a 10 times greater risk.
Coronary calcium is a marker for a diseased artery. It builds up like atherosclerotic plaque and is caused by the same primary factor -- high blood lipid levels. Detrano said that calcium screening can be recommended for people who are at moderate risk.

Fosamax Linked to Serious Abnormal Bone Fractures ...
On March 20, 2008, The New England Journal of Medicine published a physician group report of 15 women taking Fosamax who experienced "atypical low-energy fractures," which means their bones broke doing almost nothing – a serious kind of injury typically seen in very elderly individuals in declining health. The fact that the NEJM is reporting this is a major wake up call to anyone who hasn't figured out that Fosamax is dangerous to your health. Fosamax wipes out healthy bone function the longer it is taken, resulting in a "low energy" status within bones – producing bones so feeble that they break from normal impacts. Biopsy and analysis done on the bones showed them to be in a pathetic condition.

Are we destined to fall victim to our genetic weaknesses?
Will we get heart disease or cancer because we have inherited bad genes from our parents ? In other words, are we controlled by our genes or does our environment control which genes are turned on or off. The new understanding in molecular biology is that we are the masters of our genetic potential and therefore our health. How we think and what we eat, drink, and breathe determines our health future. Here is an example that I have written about before, on how just changing our diet can turn on or off good and bad genes. Researchers from Finland took two groups of people with metabolic syndrome and gave each group a different diet. The diet differed in what type of carbohydrates they consumed for the 12 week study. The rest of their diet was identical. They contained the same calories and the same amount of fat, protein, carbohydrate, and fiber. The first group had wheat, oats, and potatoes as the source of their carbs. The second group ate rye as their source of carbohydrate. Rye has some very special properties. It is slowly absorbed by the body and has phytonutrients that help you lose weight and improve metabolism. After the 12 weeks, the researchers took a fat sample and analyzed it to find out which genes were turned on or off. So what happened? In the wheat, oat, and potato group, 62 genes were activated that increased inflammation, oxidative stress, and the stress response, worsened blood sugar balance, and generally amplified all of the forces in the body that lead to obesity, heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and Alzheimer's disease! No good genes were turned on. In the rye group, 71 genes were turned on that prevent diabetes, lower cholesterol, reduce inflammation, and improve blood sugar control. In both cases, the genes that were turned on and off were 100% effective. In other words they were either anti-inflammatory or pro-inflammatory. This also hold true for good fats and bad fats. Vegetable oils are pro-inflammatory and fish oils are anti-inflammatory.

Dr Linus Pauling's Unified Theory of Cardiovascular Disease ...
Over ten years ago, the two-time Nobel prize Laureate, Dr Linus Pauling and his associate Dr Matthias Rath, advocated and published a definitive thesis on the root cause, treatment, and actual cure for all forms of cardiovascular disease (CVD), including congestive heart failure, heart disease, and stroke. Today, cardiovascular related health problems together comprise fully one half of all causes of death in the US. Pauling and Rath's brilliant analysis of CVD is absolutely compelling and amply supported by numerous epidemiological and clinical studies. His unified theory of CVD constitutes one of the greatest breakthroughs in modern science, and yet has been almost completely ignored by the mainstream medical establishment, and received almost no press.

Dr. Rath’s Scientific Discovery in Heart Disease - Coronary Heart Disease Is an Early Form of Scurvy...
Dr. Rath’s research reveals that coronary heart disease occurs exactly for the same reason that clinical (early) scurvy does – a deficiency of vitamin C in the cells composing the artery wall. Humans, unlike animals, develop heart disease because their bodies cannot produce vitamin C. The average diet provides enough vitamin C to prevent scurvy, but not enough to guarantee stable artery walls. As a consequence of vitamin C deficiency, millions of tiny cracks and lesions develop in the artery walls. Subsequently, cholesterol, lipoproteins and other blood risk factors enter the damaged artery walls to repair these lesions.
In the case of chronic vitamin deficiency, this repair process becomes continuous. Over the course of many years, atherosclerotic deposits develop. Deposits in the arteries of the heart eventually lead to heart attack; deposits in the arteries of the brain lead to stroke.

Dr. Rath’s Scientific Discovery in Cancer...
Cancer cell growth never stops, and it results in the formation of a tumor mass.To stop cancer metastasis, the activity of MMPs must be inhibited. Dr. Rath and his team of researchers at the Dr. Rath Research Institute have identified a specific combination of nutrients that can inhibit the activity of MMPs and stop the spread of cancer cells.

ARE YOU EATING YOUR GREENS EVERY DAY?
When it comes to health around the world, eating green leafy vegetables is associated with the lowest levels of cancer and degenerative diseases. However, in Amercia, it seems to be missing from most peoples diet. Below are some examples of research that show the importance of not only greens, which contain chlorophyll, but other important nutrients like green tea, and grape seed extract. If you don't get the 6 to 8 servings of vegetables and fruits everyday, there are supplements like chlorella and spirulina that can do as good a job if not better, in a convenient capsule and at a cost of about a dollar a day. Good insurance, don't you think? In recognition of this problem, I have introduced a product called Orthomolecular Formulations - Daily Greens. Daily Greens is designed as a supplement for those that don't get enough green leafy, colored vegetables and fruits in there diets... This formula contains ingredients which are similar to eating a diet high in vegetables and powerful anti-oxidants and bioflavenoids that can be found in foods with varied colors, called phytonutrients.
Enjoy this weeks articles that explain the many benefits of these nutraceuticals.

Green leafy vegetables may halve lung cancer risk...
11-Mar-2008 - An increased intake of green leafy vegetables, but not fruit, may reduce the risk of lung cancer by 50 per cent, suggests a new study from Spain. The protective effects of the vegetables was possibly due to the antioxidant content of the food, known to be rich source of vitamins A and C, as well as flavonoids. The study analysed dietary intakes of 617 people, comprising 295 people with lung cancer and 322 healthy controls, using a food-frequency questionnaire (FFQ). Dosil-Diaz and co-workers report no benefits from fruit, regardless of the level of intake, after adjusting for sex, age, tobacco use, and occupation. On the other hand, consumption of at least one portion of green leafy vegetables a day was associated with a 50 per cent reduction in the risk of developing lung cancer than consumption of less than five times per week.

Spirulina shown to prevent and treat cancers while boosting immune system function ...
Nature can provide you with valuable weapons against cancer, but like all things, it's up to you to use them. Although the Japanese have known about and used spirulina for medicinal purposes for years, this form of microalgae is still not "mainstream" in American diets. Spirulina's blue-green color is more than a pretty facade; it is also the source of much of its cancer-prevention abilities. In Healing with Whole Foods, Paul Pitchford writes, "Important to note in the area of prevention, spirulina is richly supplied with the blue pigment phycocyanin, a biliprotein which has been shown to inhibit cancer-colony formation."

And there's also been some work out of the University of Mississippi where they have extracted a compound, again a polysaccharide from spirulina, which greatly stimulates the immune system.

Due to its dense and nutrient-rich nature, chlorella offers your body a two-fold attack against cancer. You can access these benefits by taking only one or two teaspoons of chlorella once or twice daily, according to Michael Tierra's Treating Cancer with Herbs.

Spirulina research shows treatment of breast cancer tumors, HIV virus, and other viruses ...
Spirulina contains some anti-viral and immune stimulating compounds that we're just learning about. There's been some research out of Japan showing that a sulfonated polysaccharide which they've named calcium spirolan inhibits many viruses from invading cells, and this includes herpes and actually the HIV virus. And there's also been some work out of the University of Mississippi where they have extracted a compound, again a polysaccharide from spirulina, which greatly stimulates the immune system.

Chlorella as a powerful defense against cancer ...
Amazing things truly do come in small packages. One of your most powerful weapons against cancer is chlorella -- a unicellular, green algae. This tiny algae packs a powerful punch. In Prescription for Dietary Wellness, Phyllis A. Balch explains, "Chlorella…contains the highest chlorophyll level per ounce of any plant, as well as protein (nearly 58 percent), carbohydrates, all of the B vitamins, vitamins C and E, amino acids (including all nine essential ones), enzymes and rare trace minerals." Due to its dense and nutrient-rich nature, chlorella offers your body a two-fold attack against cancer. You can access these benefits by taking only one or two teaspoons of chlorella once or twice daily, according to Michael Tierra's Treating Cancer with Herbs.

Green tea shows benefits against fatty liver...
Extracts from green tea may stop the build-up of fatty deposits in the liver, and offer benefits for this silent killer linked to obesity, suggests a new study with mice.
If the results can be translated to humans, green tea and its extracts could become a useful preventative in the development of fatty liver, a condition that is usually symptomless but said to increase the risk for liver inflammation, and ultimately results in liver failure.
