Pycnogenol ® has been hailed as the most potent, natural antioxidant compound ever discovered by science, considered by many health experts to be the nutritional breakthrough of the twentieth century! Pycnogenol® is the name of the patented extract of the bark of the Maritime Pine tree, Pinus maritima that grows along the Atlantic Coast in the Bordeaux region of France. Produced by Horphag Research Ltd., Pycnogenol® is exceptionally rich in a class of water-soluble bioflavonoids known as proanthocyanidins. This natural blend of plant-derived compounds scavenge free-radicals in our food, water and environment.
One of the most valuable and fascinating of the natural “medicines,” Pycnogenol® (pick-nojh-en-ahl), has been tested and used by physicians in Europe for nearly 25 years and more recently in the USA. Pycnogenol® is a super - antioxidant, surpassing other antioxidants in protecting from and repairing free radical damage in living cells. You can see the effect of oxidation when a cut apple turns brown or windshield wipers get hard and brittle. Pencil erasers get hard and unusable for erasing, metals rust. Research has shown that free-radical damage is a major cause of aging and degenerative disease. Antioxidants are one of the main defenses against this oxidation caused by free radicals. Vitamins C and E are electron-rich molecules that donate electrons to the free-radical molecules, stabilizing them before they can damage the molecules of body cells and tissues.
Although the body needs oxygen to live, there must be a control to quench oxidation in the wrong places. The body normally would be able to provide its own free radical quenchers, the antioxidants, from healthy, whole foods; but it is overwhelmed by the onslaught of so many free-radical sources in our modern, contaminated world. Pycnogenol® is 50 times more effective as an antioxidant than vitamin E and 20 times more effective than vitamin C in in vitro studies. Doctors have successfully used Pycnogenol® for attention deficit disorder, allergies, Alzheimer's, arteriosclerosis, arthritis, asthma, autism, cancer, cataracts, depression, diabetes, fibromyalgia, heart disease, hemorrhoids, injuries, jet lag, lupus, macular degeneration, manic depression, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, PMS, prostatitis, phlebitis, sport injuries, strokes, ulcers, varicose veins, and many others. Please read 3 new articles out this month on the benefits of this amazing product.

Hearts do repair if you know the secret.
For as long as I can remember, doctors have been telling people that heart muscles don't repair, once they are damaged. I want you to pay very close attention to this report. They now believe exercise can do it, but say there is no drug that can stimulated stem cells to repair the heart muscle. True, no drug can, but how about vitamin C? They don't mention that. But I have the following information on my website called How to Mend A Broken Heart. I will list it here for you to see.
"Richard T. Lee, M.D., senior author of a study published by the American Heart Association says: "We have been taught for decades that when your heart cells are dead, they are dead and there is nothing we can do about it. We are excited about anything suggesting that we can grow more heart cells. "Lee and his colleagues tested 880 bioactive substances – including drugs and vitamins – approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to see if they stimulated the mouse stem cells to become heart muscle cells. The cells were genetically altered to give off a fluorescent bright green color when viewed under a microscope if they had become heart muscle cells. "We only got 1 out of the 880 to light up, and that was from ascorbic acid, the chemical commonly known as vitamin C," says Lee, an associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, and a lecturer in biological engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, Mass."
Dr Linus Pauling with his fellow collaborator, Dr Rath, published "A Unified Theory of Human Cardiovascular Disease Leading the Way to the Abolition of This Disease as a Cause for Human Mortality". This monumental work has largely gone unnoticed because of the entrenched opinions and dogma of the mainstream medical community and their overseers, the multi-billion dollar international pharmaceutical industry. The fact that you have probably not heard about this discovery in the mainstream media is disturbing and speaks volumes on the power of big money and the effectiveness of the pharmaceutical industry's disinformation campaigns.
Pauline and Raths theory of CVD is so scientifically compelling and demonstrable that in 1994 they were granted the only US patent for the cure of cardiovascular disease. This was no small feat since the US Office of Patents will only grant a patent for an invention that has been demonstrated to work. The non-prescription therapy advocated by Pauling and Rath has become know as the Pauline Therapy. The efficacy of the Pauline Therapy has been amply proven in thousands of cardiovascular patients who have been so fortunate to discover the remarkable treatment. The Pauline and Rath heart protocols in lower dosage levels will prevent cardiovascular disease and in higher dosages will actually reverse arterial plaque build up and reverse heart disease! Heart patients moving to the Pauling Therapy commonly avoid open-heart surgery and angioplasty. This is accomplished by dealing directly with the root causes of CVD and arterial plaque buildup. Almost without exception patients experience rapid recovery.

Exercise can help heart repair itself ...
Physical activity can spark growth of new blood vessels, stem cells.
The Associated Press
Updated: 10:15 a.m. PT Sept 5, 2007
VIENNA, Austria - Having a bad heart doesn't mean you can skip exercise, doctors said Wednesday. In fact, it may even help your heart to repair itself. Research presented at the European Society of Cardiology meeting showed that exercise sparks the creation of new heart vessels.
In a small study of 37 people at Leipzig University in Germany, Dr. Robert Hollriegel found that people with serious heart failure who rode a bike for up to 30 minutes a day for four months produced new stem cells in their bones.
They also had more small blood vessels in their muscles. Those who didn't exercise had no change in their vessels or muscles.
Most patients with heart failure are over 70 years old, and some can barely walk a few steps without stopping for rest. Doctors think that even these patients would benefit from light exercise such as walking or cycling. To ensure that patients will be able to handle a certain level of physical activity, doctors conduct a test first to determine their maximum limits and to ensure they would not be exceeded. Some exercise regimens also are supervised by health professionals.
"We're not talking about patients with acute heart problems," said Dr. John Cleland, a heart failure specialist at the University of Hull in Britain who is spokesman for the European Society of Cardiology. Cleland was not involved in Hollriegel's research.
"This is to prevent people from getting into a cycle of deterioration where they're afraid to exercise and they just avoid any activity that leaves them out of breath," he said.
Physical activity strains the heart's arteries and muscles by sending 10 times the normal amount of blood to the muscles being used. Stem cells then are dispatched to relieve this stress and may repair any damaged parts. If you continue to exercise, these stem cells help the body adapt to the stress, by building new blood vessels and strengthening muscles. But to maintain such benefits, you must exercise regularly.
Cleland said that people with heart failure should exercise to a state where they're breathless at least once a day. Pushing the limits of their heart's capabilities should help make it stronger.
"People think that if they have heart failure, then they're at the end of the road and they can't exercise," said Dr. Freek Verheugt, a cardiologist at the University of Nymegen in the Netherlands. "But this study shows that exercise can work to produce new blood vessels, even in patients with serious heart disease."
Because no drugs exist to produce new stem cells, exercise may be the only method for some patients to rebuild their hearts.

Do you want more proof fast digesting carbs are what's making you fat?
What is responsible for the obesity epidemic? I teach that it is the over consumption of refined carbohydrates, high glycemic foods, like potatoes, white rice, most cereals, breads and especially sugar and high fructose corn syrup.
The word protein means "of first importance". In fact it's a scientific fact that amino acids that come from proteins and fatty acids that come from good fats are essential for long term health. Carbohydrates are non essential. Except for the pigments (phytonutrients) and anti-oxidants found in fruits and vegetables and the beneficial fiber, the sugars from these foods are mostly a stress to our bodies, depending on how well you regulate glucose and how much insulin you produce as a result of digesting these foods. Your health and longevity depend upon maintaining proper blood sugar balance. There are three major centenarian studies going on around the world. They are trying to find the variable that would confer longevity among this group of people who live to be 100 years old. Why do centenarians become centenarians? Why are they so lucky? Is it because they have low cholesterol, exercise a lot and live a healthy, clean life? Well, the oldest person ever recorded was Jean Calumet of France who died last year at 122 years of age. She smoked all of her life and drank. What researchers are finding from these major centenarian studies is that there is hardly anything in common among these people. They have high cholesterol and low cholesterol, some exercise and some don't, some smoke, some don't. Some are nasty as can be, some nice and calm and some are ornery.
But, they all have relatively low sugar for their age, and they all have low triglycerides for their age, which is the storage fat generated by excess carbohydrate consumption. And, they all have relatively low insulin.
Here is just another study to confirm this that came out this week.

Diet Change Can Curb Fatty Liver Disease...
Fri Sep 21, 11:46 PM ET
FRIDAY, Sept. 21 (HealthDay News) -- Diets high in quick-burning carbohydrates may cause fatty liver disease, which can lead to liver failure and death, according to a study in mice by researchers at Children's Hospital Boston.
If these findings are confirmed in humans, it may mean that fatty liver disease can be prevented and possibly treated through dietary changes, the study authors said.
They fed mice either a high- or low-glycemic index diet. The mice on the high-glycemic diet received a type of cornstarch that's digested quickly, while those on the low-glycemic diet received a cornstarch that's slowly digested.
In humans, examples of high-glycemic foods -- which raise blood sugar quickly -- include white bread, white rice, most prepared breakfast cereals and concentrated sugar. Vegetables, fruits, beans and unprocessed grains are examples of low-glycemic foods, which raise blood sugar slowly.
In this study, both groups of mice received equal amounts of total calories, fat, protein, and carbohydrate. After six months, both groups of mice weighed the same. However, the mice on the high-glycemic diet had twice the amount of fat in their bodies, blood and livers than those on the low-glycemic diet.
The findings were published in the September issue of the journal Obesity.
"Our experiment creates a very strong argument that a high-glycemic index diet causes, and a low-glycemic diet prevents, fatty liver in humans," research leader Dr. David Ludwig, director of the Optimal Weight for Life program at Children's Hospital Boston, said in a prepared statement.
He and his colleagues have just launched a clinical trial to examine whether a low-glycemic index diet can reverse fatty liver in overweight children.

How to become a Well Being... Over time.
I saw a documentary yesterday that reminded me that fear is used way to often to motivate people to do things. Governments do it, advertisers use risk and reward to convince you to buy the things they are selling and drug companies use fear to get you to buy their medications. I had a paradigm change or an epiphany from watching this documentary. I don't want to find myself using the fear of disease as a way to get people to use health products either. Instead, I want to make sure I proclaim the good news as to how we can stay healthy and reverse many age related illnesses. Why do I know I have good news to share? Because we are what we eat and use in the ways of supplementation. The body changes constantly and moves either closer to ideal health or a way from it, depending on what we do over time.
Here are some interesting thoughts from Dr. Deepak Chopra, M.D., from a lecture he did entitled, Quantum Healing: Exploring the Frontiers of Mind/Body Medicine...
"If you could understand your body as it really is, you would see that the real you cannot step into the same flesh and bones twice because in every second of your existence you're renewing your body, changing it more rapidly, more effortlessly, more spontaneously and more easily than you can change your clothes. We can take a number of processes: eating, breathing, digestion, metabolism, elimination, but most fundamentally the movement of consciousness which expresses itself as these processes, and you would see how effortlessly, how easily you can change your body and in fact are doing so all the time. The physical bodies that you're using to sit on these chairs, for example, aren't the ones that you walked in with a little while ago. Even with one breath you take in 10 to the power of 22 atoms. An astronomical amount of raw material that ends up as your heart, brain and kidney cells, your neurons, your DNA. With each breath you breathe out 10 to the power of 22 atoms. It's an astronomical amount of raw materials that is coming from every bit of your body. You are literally breathing out bits and pieces of your brain tissue and heart and kidney. Actually, technically speaking, we are intimately sharing our organs with each other all the time. The American poet Walt Whitman said, "Every atom belonging to you as well belongs to me." And this isn't a metaphorical statement at all. "Every atom belonging to you as well belongs to me." Based on radioactive isotope studies and mathematical computations it can easily be shown that in this moment of your existence you have a million atoms that were once in the body of Christ, in the body of Gautama Buddha or Leonardo Da Vinci or Michelangelo or Mr. Saddam Hussein. You can't separate yourself from anything physically or anybody that has ever existed. In just the last 3 weeks, a quadrillion atoms, 10 to the power of 15 atoms have gone through your body that have gone through the body of every other species on this planet. And if you do radioactive isotope studies which have been done very elegantly, you can prove beyond a shadow of doubt that you replace 98% of all the atoms in your body in less than one year. You make a new liver every 6 weeks, a new skin once a month, a new stomach lining every 5 days, a new skeleton - it seems so hard and solid, but the skeleton you have now you didn't have three months ago. Even the brain cells that you think with as carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen and oxygen, as those basic elements, they weren't there one year ago. And the DNA that holds memories of millions of years of evolutionary time, in fact hundreds of millions of years; the actual raw material of it comes and goes every six weeks. Those atoms drift in and out like migratory birds every six weeks. And if you want to be a real stickler about it and account for the last atom and every little sinew and collagen and cartilage, then in less than two and a half years you replace every atom in your body down to the last single atom."
As Dr. Chopra explains, we are living beings that change on a daily basis, and that is good news for us. All we have to do is change our habits and in less than 2 and 1/2 years, we are brand new. Positive changes will bring positive results. Good News, don't you think?

IF YOU DON'T CHANGE DIRECTION, YOU'LL END UP WHERE YOUR HEADED!
One of my biggest frustrations as a health consultant is the reluctance of people to practice prevention instead of treatment. People buy health insurance in order to protect themselves from a critical illness or injury, but they fail to insure themselves the ability of not getting sick. I think it is because they think eating right and supplementing costs too much money, and it does not bring immediate gratification. This is true to a degree, but how much does lost work and productivity cost you. A lot more is my guess, not to mention you feel horrible way too often unnecessarily... Also, when you catch a virus, you tend to pass it on to other people with low immune function, and it effects even more unsuspecting victims. 30 years of research and working with the few people who over the years, see the advantage of prevention, has proved to me the value and benefit of taking action before we get sick and run down. It reminds me of a quote from Albert Einstein, " The significant problems we face cannot be solved at the same level of thinking we were at when we created them."- There you have it, we need a paradyme shift in our thinking to move from treating disease to preventing disease. I welcome you to read the Blogs I send out and also take action.
If you have followed some advice over the years and changed your eating and or started to supplement and have found your health dramatically improve, I would like to hear from you. I will share your e-mails on my next Blog.

High GI diet linked to poor eye health...
08/17/2007 - Eating a diet with a high glycemic index may increase the risk of developing advanced age-related macular degeneration (AMD), says a new study from Tufts University. Men and women who consumed diets with a higher glycemic index than average for their gender and age-group were at greater risk of developing advanced AMD," said corresponding author Allen Taylor. "The severity of AMD increased with increasing dietary glycemic index."AMD affects the central part of the retina called the macula, which controls fine vision, leaving sufferers with only limited sight. AMD affects over 30m people worldwide, and is the leading cause of blindness in people over 50.

Atkins Fares Best in Study Of Four Weight-Loss Regimens...
A year-long, head-to-head study of four widely used diets found that overweight women who followed the very low-carbohydrate Atkins diet had no adverse health effects and lost slightly more weight than women on the other three.
The study by Stanford University researchers compared the Atkins approach with three others: the standard low-fat, reduced-calorie regimen long recommended by many physicians and weight-loss experts; the Zone, a reduced-carbohydrate approach developed by author Barry Sears; and the very low-fat, high-carbohydrate regimen created by Dean Ornish. The latest findings add to a growing body of evidence that the high-protein Atkins diet does not cause the harmful heart and artery effects long feared by many researchers.
Women who followed the Atkins plan had a significant drop in triglycerides, one of the unhealthful blood fats linked to a higher risk of heart disease. Their blood pressure also dropped the most of the four groups, a finding that the researchers think may relate to their slightly greater weight loss. Those in the Atkins group also experienced the largest increase in high-density lipoprotein (HDL), a protective type of cholesterol.

Too Clean? Fight Against Germs Fuels Allergy Increase...
A dose of dirt could be the best medicine for preventing allergies in kids who've never had them. While avoiding excessive contact with germs can help prevent the spread of infections, going overboard with cleanliness could be at least partly responsible for an increase in allergies among children, mounting research suggests.
"We’ve developed a cleanlier lifestyle, and our bodies no longer need to fight germs as much as they did in the past," said Marc McMorris, a pediatric allergist at the University of Michigan Health System. "As a result, the immune system has shifted away from fighting infection to developing more allergic tendencies."
More than 50 percent of Americans ages 6 to 59 years are sensitive to at least one allergen, according to a national survey conducted from 1988 to 1994 by the National Institutes of Health. That's two to five times higher than rates found in a previous 1976 to 1980 survey.
Recent research has found evidence for the so-called hygiene hypothesis, which explains how more sterile environments can lead to higher rates of illness. For instance, scientists in Germany recently found children exposed to farm animals (and the associated bacteria and other microbes hiding out there) were about half as likely as other children to develop the autoimmune illness Crohn's disease.

Why reading and acting on my Blogs may add years to your life!!!
People often ask me what Ortho-Molecular Nutrition means. Ortho-Molecular Nutrition is the belief that by concentrating and balancing the molecules in the body, we can achieve a state of optimal health. Ortho is a Greek word meaning, "correct" or "right." So Ortho-Molecular literally means, "right molecules. "Each of us is born with genetic strengths and weaknesses. It is our genetics, combined with our environment, that determine our own unique set of nutritional requirements. Stress, pollution, poor eating habits, lack of sleep, and genetic pre-dispositions can push these needs way out of balance. When our biochemical needs are out of balance our bodies become deficient in certain nutrients, causing us to become weak, tired and vulnerable to illness and disease. Correcting these imbalances can make a huge difference in the quality of our life. Ok, great but how do we put this information into application? There are too many examples, but I will state a few. It's takes very little vitamin C to prevent Scurvy. The average multi vitamin has the minimum daily allowance of 60 mgs, which will accomplish that just fine. Some of my multi's have 1000 mgs to 1800 mgs, and I take 10,000 mgs per day myself. Can taking more really have an effect on the quality of your life? One study from UCLA announced that men who took 800 mg a day of vitamin C lived 6 years longer than those who consumed the FDA's recommended daily allowance of 60 mg a day. The study, which evaluated 11,348 participants over a 10-year period of time, showed that high vitamin C intake extended average lifespan and reduced mortality from cardiovascular disease by 42% (Enstrom et al. 1992).
That is just an example of one nutrient. Here is another example I received this week from the Life Extention Foundation. You all know I blog on vitamin D3 all the time, because it can have a major improvement in your health and well being.

AMA journal meta-analysis finds vitamin D supplements linked with reduced risk of dying over a six year period...
The September 10, 2007 issue of the American Medical Association journal Archives of Internal Medicine published the results of a meta-analysis conducted by Philippe Autier, MD of the International Agency for Research on Cancer in Lyon, France, and Sara Gandini, PhD of the European Institute of Oncology in Milan, which concluded that men and women given vitamin D supplements had a lower risk of dying from any cause over a 5.7 year average follow-up period.
For the review, Drs Autier and Gandini selected 18 randomized, controlled clinical trials involving vitamin D supplementation published prior to November, 2006. The trials included a total of 57,311 participants. Subjects who received vitamin D were given 300 to 2000 international units (averaging 528 IU). Serum vitamin D levels were measured in half of the studies.
There were 4,777 deaths recorded over the follow-up period. Subjects who received vitamin D were found to have a 7 percent lower risk of dying of any cause compared with those who did not receive the vitamin. In those who were tested, blood levels of vitamin D were 1.4 to 5.2 times greater among participants who received vitamin D supplements than in those who did not.
In seeking a explanation for the finding, the authors make note of vitamin D’s ability to inhibit the proliferation of cancer cells, improve blood vessel function, and boost the immune system. They also suggest that the ability shown by statin drugs "to decrease all-cause mortality could partly be due to increases in vitamin D levels they would provoke or through acting as vitamin D analogues on vitamin D receptors."
"The relationship between baseline vitamin D status, dose of vitamin D supplements and total mortality rates remains to be investigated," the authors conclude. "Population-based, placebo-controlled randomized trials in people 50 years or older for at least six years with total mortality as the main end point should be organized to confirm these findings."
In an accompanying editorial, Edward Giovannucci, MD, ScD, of the Harvard School of Public Health poses provocative questions, such as, "Would even a greater reduction in mortality accrue than that suggested in this meta-analysis if intakes of vitamin D were higher, if compliance was improved, if higher levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D were attained, and if the duration of supplementation was longer?"
"From a broader public health perspective, the roles of moderate sun exposure, food fortification with vitamin D, and higher-dose vitamin D supplements for adults need to be debated," he concludes.

Vitamin D in the news and again it's BIG...
Again this week in health news we read about the value of increasing vitamin D3 levels. I know of no other single vitamin that can potentially prevent so many horrible health issues facing us right now. Metabolic Syndrome, and all the cluster diseases that come with that issue, are all benefited by extra D3. Most cheap vitamins use D2, which is very inferior to D3. Also the average multiple uses 200 IU's to 400 IU's which we now know is too little to prevent major illness. More and more research now indicates that we need at least 800 IU's to 2000 IU's daily and 4000 IU's might even be better, as one of the studies below shows. All the Multi's I formulate have at least 800 IU's to 1200 IU's of D3, and I recommend that people get sunlight everyday as well to make sure levels of D3 are high. Read the evidence yourselves and remember, prevention is so much smarter that treatment after the fact.

Vitamin D could halve breast and colon cancer incidence...
06/09/2007- As many as 50 percent of breast and colon cancer cases could be prevented by increasing intake of vitamin D, according to a study that backs continued calls for higher upper limits of the ingredient. The findings confirm what industry and researchers have long been advocating: that the public does not consume enough vitamin D and as such the ingredient needs to be made more available to consumers through public awareness and increased upper limits. According to the study's projections, in North America, a 50 percent reduction in colon cancer incidence would require universal intake of 2000 IU (International Units) per day of vitamin D, and a 50 percent reduction in breast cancer would require 3500 IU per day.

Red wine showed an 87 per cent reduction in the risk of developing prostate tumours.
Red wine linked to anti-cancer potential...
03/09/2007- A nutrient found in red wine has shown a positive result in cancer reduction, a study in mice has found.
Researchers from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, and writing in the August edition of the Journal of Carcinogenesis, examined the effect of the plant compound resveratrol when fed to male mice with the aim of preventing prostate tumours. The study adds more weight to the health benefits of the compound. Previous studies have linked it to having a positive effect on extending survival rates of mice and preventing the negative effects of high-calorie diets. It has also been linked to diabetes, heart health and obesity. Resveratrol - an antioxidant - is also found in grapes, raspberries, peanuts and blueberries, which in turn fall under the umbrella group of superfoods. In red wine, the amount of resveratrol in a bottle can vary between types of grapes and growing seasons, and can vary between 0.2 and 5.8 milligrams per litre. But nearly all dark red wines - merlot, cabernet, zinfandel, shiraz and pinot noir - contain resveratrol. However, the amounts used in the UAB mice studies were the equivalent of one person consuming one bottle of red wine per day. General medical guidance has advised no more than one glass of wine a day for women and two for men. In the study, resveratrol-fed mice showed an 87 per cent reduction in their risk of developing prostate tumours. The mice that experienced the highest cancer-protection effect earned it after seven months of consuming resveratrol in a powdered formula mixed with their food. Other mice in the study, that developed a less-serious form of prostate cancer and were fed resveratrol, were 48 per cent more likely to have their tumor growth halted or slowed when compared to mice who did not consume the compound, the UAB research team said. This study adds to a growing body of evidence that resveratrol consumption through red wine has powerful chemoprevention properties, in addition to its apparent heart-health benefits, said lead study author Coral Lamartiniere of UAB's Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology. An earlier UAB study published May 2006 in the same journal found resveratrol-fed female mice had considerable reduction in their risk of breast cancer. He said: "A cancer prevention researcher lives for these days when they can make that kind of finding. "I drink a glass a day every evening because I'm concerned about prostate cancer. It runs in my family. "The team of researchers are now starting work to test resveratrol consumption in humans, specifically looking at the levels of concentrations needed to produce a similar effect as that which was found in the mice. The study was partly funded by the United States Department of Defense and the National Cancer Institute, but the full results have not yet been seen by NutraIngredients.com.

Experience all the benefits of red wine, without the alcohol, sulfites or calories! Promotes healthy blood pressure, cholesterol and cardiovascular health—and provides potent antioxidant protection.
Red wine is well known for its cardioprotective and other health-promoting benefits. Researchers believe resveratrol, which is highly concentrated in the skin of grapes and abundant in red wine, is the compound responsible for these benefits.
Resveratrol is produced by plants in response to injury or fungal infection. It also protects plants from UV radiation and other harmful substances. Resveratrol is believed to provide similar protective benefits for humans. Its antioxidant activity, or ability to neutralize free radicals (unstable molecules that attack healthy cells and damage membranes and DNA), may account for its cardioprotective effects. Resveratrol appears to promote healthy blood composition and circulation, and may also have anti-inflammatory properties.
A recent landmark study from Harvard Medical School, published in the medical journal Nature, found that ultra-high doses of red wine extract with resveratrol allowed obese mice to eat a high fat diet and still live a long and healthy life¹. Researchers discovered that the liver and other systems in obese mice remained healthy and fat-related deaths dropped 31 percent for those taking a resveratrol supplement. For more information on this study, click here.
Unlike other resveratrol supplements, which may contain molecules that have broken down over time, NSI® Longevatrol™ Stabilized Polyphenol Complex is sealed in airtight, liquid-filled capsules (Licaps®) to ensure stability and preservation of resveratrol. Each one-capsule serving delivers 100 mg of Polygonum cuspidatum standardized to 50% resveratrol, plus 100 mg of red wine extract, standardized to 40% polyphenols.
Because there is at least 50 mg of resveratrol present in each capsule, one serving is the equivalent of drinking 50 to 125 five-ounce glasses of red wine.

NSI Longevatrol Stabilized Red Wine Polyphenol Complex with Resveratrol -- 200 mg - 60 LiCaps

Lies being told about health studies and you need to know the truth...
Last month, there was a media blitz that took a study on the effects of vitamin C and E taken together, and the news outlets misrepresented the information to suggest that these nutrients were practically worthless. The study when you read it, did nothing to suggest that, in fact just the opposite. There is a campaign going on to down play the power of supplementation, because it is not controlled by the pharmaceutical companies. People are taking supplements more than ever before and are getting results. In general, natural supplements have positive effects and almost never, negative side effects. Which would you prefer to have, side benefits or side effects? Below are some recent articles that show amazing results from foods and supplements and a description of how deception can and is being done in media campaigns around the country.

Unraveling the lies about the antioxidant study on vitamins E and C...
A new study published in the August 13, 2007 issue of the Archives of Internal Medicine found that vitamins E and C, when taken together, result in a significant reduction in the risk of strokes (31 percent) and heart attacks (22 percent). The study followed 8,171 women who were instructed to take relatively small amounts of these vitamins for more than nine years (600 IU of vitamin E, 500mg of vitamin C and 50mg of beta carotene were taken every other day -- a very small dose according to most modern nutritionists). Despite these encouraging findings about the positive impact of antioxidants on health, nearly all the headlines in the mainstream media today are proclaiming vitamins E and C to be useless. In classic doublespeak, one press release blares, "Vitamin C and Other Antioxidant Vitamins Provide No Protection from Cardiovascular Events." This particular distortion comes from the drug-touting Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH), an affiliate of Harvard Medical School. BWH goes on to state, "researchers... have found that there is no evidence of benefit or risk from vitamins C, E or beta-carotene on cardiovascular events for women at a high risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD)."

Pomegranate extracts may inhibit prostate cancer growth - study...
31/08/2007 - Ellagitannins from pomegranate accumulate in the prostate and may be behind the reported benefits of the fruit, suggests a new animal study from the US. The study, published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, also reports that the growth of prostate cancer cells was significantly inhibited by the pomegranate ellagitannins and their metabolites, highlighting the potential of the extracts against the disease. "We have shown that pomegranate ellagitannins metabolites are concentrated to a high degree in mouse prostate tissues," wrote the authors, led by Navindra Seeram."The current study contributes to the increasing body of evidence demonstrating the prostate cancer chemopreventive potential of pomegranate ellagitannins."

Omega-3 supplements rapidly eliminate ADD, ADHD and bipolar disorder in children...
Researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital have reported that omega-3 fatty acid is highly effective in treating children with ADD, ADHD and bipolar disorder. The study was reported in the journal European Neuropsychopharmacology in February 2007."Results from this prospective, open study of monotherapy with omega-3 fatty acids in the over-the-counter product OmegaBrite suggest that manic symptoms can be rapidly reduced in youths with BPD with a safe and well-tolerated nutritional supplement," wrote lead researcher Dr. Janet Wozniak. The high-EPA supplement of Omega-3 fatty acids, called OmegaBrite, was tested for effectiveness and safety on 20 boys and girls with bipolar disorder, ages 6 to 17 years old, over an eight-week period. Half of the participants experienced a rapid 30 percent reduction in symptoms with no side effects.

Pectin triggers self-destruction of prostate cancer cells...
The August, 2007 issue of the journal Glycobiology published the discovery of scientists at the University of Georgia’s Complex Carbohydrate Research Center that treatment with pectin causes the self-destruction of cultured prostate cancer cells. Pectin, a type of fiber which occurs in fruits and vegetables, is one of the most complex molecules known, and can bind to several cell sites to elicit different cellular responses simultaneously. Previous research in rats and tissue cultures treated with pectin has found a protective effect against lung and colon tumors, as well as reduced metastasis.
Professor of biochemistry and molecular biology Debra Mohnen and her associates at the University of Georgia and the VA Medical Center in Augusta exposed androgen-responsive and androgen- independent human prostate cancer cells to commercially available pectin powder. The induction of cellular self-destruction known as apoptosis was approximately 40-fold greater in cultures treated with fractionated pectin powder compared with non-treated cells.
Androgen-independent cells cannot be combated with hormone therapy and are therefore difficult to treat, yet both androgen-responsive and androgen-independent cells were found to have undergone apoptosis following treatment with pectin.
The research team found that heat treatment increased pectin’s apoptotic activity, suggesting a way to improve its cancer-fighting ability. They are currently seeking to identify the smallest structure within pectin that elicits apoptosis in order to develop pectin-based nutraceuticals or drugs.
The study is the first to demonstrate an apoptotic effect of pectin in prostate cancer cells and contributes to the understanding of the anticancer property of pectin found in previous research. “What this paper shows is that if you take human prostate cancer cells and add pectin, you can induce programmed cell death,” Dr Mohnen stated. “If you do the same with noncancerous cells, cell death doesn’t occur.”
“Even though we hear constantly that we’re supposed to eat lots of fruits and vegetables, it wasn’t until we started working on these studies that it finally hit home how really important that was,” she added. “By simply increasing your intake of fruits of vegetables, you’re going to get a lot of pectin and you’re going to get all of the other beneficial phytochemicals at the same time.”

Lipoic Acid, As An Anti-Aging Compound ...
05-18-07
PORTLAND, Ore., May 17 (AScribe Newswire) -- Researchers said today they have identified the mechanism of action of lipoic acid, a remarkable compound that in animal experiments appears to slow down the process of aging, improve blood flow, enhance immune function and perform many other functions. The findings, discussed at the "Diet and Optimum Health" conference sponsored by the Linus Pauling Institute at Oregon State University, shed light on how this micronutrient might perform such a wide range of beneficial functions. "The evidence suggests that lipoic acid is actually a low-level stressor that turns on the basic cellular defenses of the body, including some of those that naturally decline with age," said Tory Hagen, an LPI researcher and associate professor of biochemistry and biophysics at OSU. "In particular, it tends to restore levels of glutathione, a protective antioxidant and detoxification compound, to those of a young animal. It also acts as a strong anti-inflammatory agent, which is relevant to many degenerative diseases." Researchers at LPI are studying vitamins, dietary approaches and micronutrients that may be implicated in the aging or degenerative disease process, and say that lipoic acid appears to be one of those with the most compelling promise. It's normally found at low levels in green leafy vegetables, but can also be taken as a supplement. According to Hagen, research on the natural processes of aging, and steps that could slow it or improve health until near the end of life, are of growing importance. "We're coming into the middle of an aging epidemic in the country," he said. "In a short time more than 70 million Americans will be over 65. This is partly because of the Baby Boom, but also people are living longer, being saved with antibiotics and other medical treatments. In any case, it will be an unprecedented number of elderly people in this nation." The goal of LPI research, Hagen said, is to address issues of "healthspan," not just lifespan - meaning the ability to live a long life with comparatively good health and vigor, free of degenerative disease, until very near death. The best mechanisms to accomplish that, scientists say, have everything to do with diet, exercise, healthy lifestyle habits and micronutrient intake. At the moment, Hagen said, that's not the way things appear to be headed - diabetes is skyrocketing, about 50 percent of people over 65 have high blood pressure, heart disease often leads to permanent disability, and almost half of the elderly people in America have malnutrition that is easily preventable. No single intervention can address all of these issues, Hagen said, but one that scientists keep coming back to is lipoic acid. "Our studies have shown that mice supplemented with lipoic acid have a cognitive ability, behavior, and genetic expression of almost 100 detoxification and antioxidant genes that are comparable to that of young animals," Hagen said. "They aren't just living longer, they are living better - and that's the goal we're after." What the OSU researchers now believe is that the role of lipoic acid is not so much a direct one to benefit cells, but rather an indirect aid that "kick starts" declining function in cells and helps them recover the functions that came more easily and naturally in young animals. In various effects, lipoic acid appears to help restore a cellular "signaling" process that tends to break down in older blood vessels. It reduces mitochondrial decay in cells, which is closely linked to the symptoms of aging. With age, glutathione levels naturally decline, making older animals more susceptible to both free radicals and other environmental toxins - but lipoic acid can restore glutathione function to near normal. And the expression and function of other genes seems to come back to life. "We never really expected such a surprising range of benefits from one compound," Hagen said. "This is really unprecedented, and we're pretty excited about it." Many other presentations have been made at this conference on the role of diet, lifestyle and micronutrients in health and degenerative disease, including cancer, heart disease, neurological diseases and aging. The conference is organized every two years by OSU's Linus Pauling Institute, and attracts leading experts from around the world in these research fields.

YOU CAN DO THINGS TO PREVENT AND EVEN REVERSE CANCER...
If you're not doing things to prevent and or reverse the potential for developing cancer, why aren't you. There is plenty of scientific evidence that it can and is being done. Here are a few things I do and so can you.

Want to avoid breast cancer? Get outdoors, say scientists...
Almost 30,000 cases of breast and colon cancer a year could be prevented by Britons spending more time in the sun to boost vitamin D levels, say researchers.
A new study claims vitamin D "deficiency" may be to blame for 600,000 cancer cases worldwide each year, particularly in northern European countries where sun exposure levels are relatively low.

Green tea extract may boost cancer-fighting enzymes...
NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Healthy subjects who received daily caffeine-free green tea extract capsules had an increased production of detoxification enzymes, which may provide some cancer-fighting benefits, study findings show. "Concentrated green tea extract could be beneficial to those who are deficient in the detoxification enzyme and shouldn't be harmful for those who have adequate detoxification enzyme," lead investigator Dr. H.-H. Sherry Chow, of the University of Arizona, Tucson, told Reuters Health.

Dr. Rath’s Scientific Discovery in Cancer...
Dr. Rath identified a common pathomechanism of all cancers, which is the degradation of the surrounding connective tissue, as a precondition for cancer metastasis. He suggested that the amino acid lysine and vitamin C could effectively control this process.
Cancer develops when cells in one part of the body begin to grow out of control. Normal body cells grow, divide, and die in a systematic way. During the early years of a person’s life, normal cells divide more rapidly until the person becomes an adult. After that, cells in most parts of the body divide only to replace worn out or dying cells and to repair injuries. In the case of cancer cells, the genetic program that regulates their growth cycle is interrupted, causing the cells to become immortal and constantly divide. Cancer cell growth never stops, and it results in the formation of a tumor mass.To stop cancer metastasis, the activity of MMPs must be inhibited. Dr. Rath and his team of researchers at the Dr. Rath Research Institute have identified a specific combination of nutrients that can inhibit the activity of MMPs and stop the spread of cancer cells. Further research has led to the development of a nutrient combination, including vitamin C, the amino acids L-lysine and L-proline and a green tea extract known as Epigallocatechin Gallate (EGCG), that works synergistically to stop the spread of cancer cells through connective tissue.

Nutrition in the news...

US slipping in life expectancy rankings...
WASHINGTON - Americans are living longer than ever, but not as long as people in 41 other countries. For decades, the United States has been slipping in international rankings of life expectancy, as other countries improve health care, nutrition and lifestyles.
Countries that surpass the U.S. include Japan and most of Europe, as well as Jordan, Guam and the Cayman Islands.
"Something's wrong here when one of the richest countries in the world, the one that spends the most on health care, is not able to keep up with other countries," said Dr. Christopher Murray, head of the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington.

Healthy Lifestyle Key To Cancer Prevention...
THURSDAY, August 16 (HealthDay News) -- While the number of deaths from cancer have been declining, many malignancies could be prevented by exercising, eating right, maintaining a healthy weight and not smoking, a new federal report finds. We tried to think of what would have the biggest impact on reducing cancer mortality," she said. "If you consider that 15 to 20 percent of cancer deaths are related to obesity and another 30 percent of cancer deaths are due to tobacco use, that's 50 percent of all people with cancer."
Healthy Diet Guards Against Return of Colon Cancer...
TUESDAY, Aug. 14 (HealthDay News) -- Colon cancer patients who eat a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, poultry and fish can significantly lower the risk of their cancer returning, new research suggests.
Dietary carbs linked to vision loss...
NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - The carbohydrates present in a diet can influence the risk of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), the most common cause of vision loss in older adults, according to a report in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Regular consumption of a diet with a high-glycemic index - a diet containing carbs that quickly raise blood sugar levels -- significantly increased the risk of AMD relative to regular consumption of a diet with a low-glycemic index.

Low-Carb Diets Combat Metabolic Syndrome ...
FRIDAY, July 20 (HealthDay News) -- A low-carbohydrate diet helps people with a condition called metabolic syndrome, a collection of serious risk factors found in some obese individuals. Eating a low-carb diet improves the hormonal signaling involved in obesity and improves the sense of fullness, allowing weight loss, according to study leader Matthew R. Hayes, a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Pennsylvania.

Eating blueberries slashes colon cancer risk by 57 percent, animal study finds...
A compound found in blueberries shows promise of preventing colon cancer, according to a new study. Scientists at Rutgers University and the U.S. Department of Agriculture conducted a joint study on animals, and found that the compound -- called pterostilbene -- lessened pre-cancerous lesions and inhibited genes involved in inflammation. Researchers presented the study at the American Chemical Society's annual meeting in March.

If your friends and family get fat, chances are you will too, researchers report in a startling new study that suggests obesity is "socially contagious" and can spread easily from person to person.
The study found a person's chances of becoming obese went up 57 percent if a friend did, 40 percent if a sibling did and 37 percent if a spouse did. In the closest friendships, the risk almost tripled.

Broccoli, cauliflower and tomato sause great for prostate cancer prevention...
Eating the right diet can have profound effects on reducing your chances of chronic disease. While cutting out as much wheat and sugar as you can is the most effective way to improve overall health, eating more foods like the ones listed below, especially cruciferous vegetables and red colored foods, can make major improvements in your health.

Broccoli and cauliflower reduce aggressive prostate cancer risk...
A study reported in the August 1, 2007 issue of the Journal of the National Cancer Institute concluded that men who consume more cruciferous vegetables, particularly broccoli and cauliflower, have a lower risk of aggressive prostate cancer. The cruciferous family of vegetables, which also includes cabbage, kale, and Brussels sprouts, has been associated in previous research with protection from colon, breast, prostate, thyroid, cervical, and other cancers, as well as with slower disease progression.
For the current study, Victoria Kirsh, PhD, of Cancer Care Ontario in Toronto and colleagues utilized data from 29,361 men participating in the Prostate, Lung, Colorectal and Ovarian Cancer Screening Trial. Over the 4.2 year average follow-up period, 1,338 men were diagnosed with prostate cancer, including 520 with aggressive disease. Dietary questionnaires completed by the participants were analyzed for the association of fruits and vegetables with prostate cancer risk.
While total fruit and vegetable intake was not found to be related to prostate cancer risk, higher intake of dark green as well as cruciferous vegetables was found to be associated with a lower risk of the disease, particularly that which was aggressive and had spread beyond the prostate. Broccoli and cauliflower had especially strong protective associations against aggressive and extraprostatic disease. Men whose intake of broccoli was greatest, at more than one serving per week, had a 45 percent lower risk of extraprostatic disease cancer than men whose intake was least, at less than once per month. Cauliflower was associated with an even greater benefit, with a 52 percent reduction in risk experienced by men who consumed the vegetable more than once per week. The gluocinsolate-derived compounds contained in cruciferous vegetables modify cancer risk by protecting cells from DNA damage, inducing apoptosis, influencing genetic expression, and inhibiting prostate cancer cell proliferation.
“Aggressive prostate cancer is biologically virulent and associated with poor prognosis. Therefore, if the association that we observed is ultimately found to be causal, a possible means to reduce the burden of this disease may be primary prevention through increased consumption of broccoli, cauliflower, and possibly spinach,” the authors conclude.
Prostate cancer
Besides laboratory testing, physical examination, and investigative procedures to rule out the presence of prostate cancer (PC) and other diseases, an action plan to prevent their development should be considered.
A dietary history of significant lycopene and/or strawberry consumption correlated with a lower risk of aggressive and extra-prostatic PC. The lycopene source that was found to be most significant in most epidemiologic studies was the tomato, in the form of tomato sauce, stewed tomatoes, and pizza. In one large-scale study involving 812 new cases of PC over the years 1986-1992 with matched controls, of the 46 vegetables and fruits or related products significantly associated with lower PC risk, three of the four identified were related to lycopenes--tomato sauce, tomatoes, and pizza. In this study, the combined intake of tomatoes, tomato sauce, tomato juice, and pizza (accounting for 82% of lycopene intake) was associated with a reduced risk of PC for consumption frequency greater than 10 versus less than 1.5 servings a week. Lycopene intake was also associated with a 53% reduced risk for advanced PC (Stages III and IV). The other nonlycopene product identified with significantly lower PC risk was strawberries.
The largest relevant dietary study, a prospective study in male health professionals, found that consumption of 2-4 servings of tomato sauce a week was associated with about a 35% risk reduction of total PC and a 50% reduction of advanced (extra-prostatic) PC. Tomato sauce was by far the strongest predictor of plasma lycopene levels in this study. These associations persisted in analyses controlling for fruit consumption, vegetable consumption, and olive oil use.

Nutrients in the news and product updates...
Dear readers...
If you had been on my e-mail blog for the last few years, you would have been educated on why 1 billion people around the world are now estimated to be vitamin D3 deficient. Getting adequate sunshine without sunscreen helps a lot, but now there is evidence that supplementation is a better way to assure that you are protected. I am so convinced of the benefits of supplementation that all my multivitamins have at least 800 IU's to 1200 IU's of vitamin D3. Most multi's contain 200 IU's to 400 IU's of D2, a much inferior form. Here is some new information on why you need vitamin D3.
Calls get louder to raise vitamin D levels...
19/07/2007 - Recommended daily intakes of vitamin D should be quadrupled to 800 International Units, says a leading US expert from Boston University School of Medicine.
Dr. Michael Holick states that current recommendations of 200 IU per day for children and adults up to 50 years of age for vitamin D need to be increased to 800 - 1000 IU vitamin D3.

THURSDAY, July 19 (HealthDay News) -- Vitamin D deficiency is a common problem that can lead to a number of serious health conditions, but it can be prevented, says one expert.
People get vitamin D from sun exposure, diet and supplements. Yet vitamin D deficiency is all too common.

Vitamin D and Calcium Combat Cancer...
Large amounts of these nutrients reduced the all-cancer risk in postmenopausal women by 60% By Hyla Cass, M.D.
We have long known that vitamin D and calcium are essential for our health and that proper calcium metabolism depends critically on adequate amounts of vitamin D, a steroid hormone popularly known as the “sunshine vitamin.” Both of these nutrients play important roles in the prevention and treatment of various diseases. A new study published by researchers at Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska, however, has startled the medical world by providing unusually strong evidence of an anticancer effect for the vitamin D and calcium pair.
Dr. Cedric Garland, a prominent vitamin D researcher at UC San Diego (who was not involved in the study), said, The findings . . . are a breakthrough of great medical and public health importance. No other method to prevent cancer has been identified that has such a powerful impact.

Breakthrough Updates You Need to Know on Vitamin D...
The compound we call vitamin D can no longer properly be considered a vitamin. For most mammals, it is not in any sense even a nutrient. Nevertheless, vitamin D resembles true vitamins inasmuch as humans -- who are cut off from the critical solar ultraviolet wavelengths by reason of latitude, clothing, or shelter -- depend on an external source of the substance, just as they do for the true essential nutrients.
