Introducing my new site Paleoceuticals...

Many of you may not know that in addition to HealthBlogger, which goes out to about 700+ people via e-mail, Facebook, and Twitter subscribers, I have also recently created a new site called Paleoceuticals.
The idea was to publish research reports on Nutraceuticals that I thought people on either Paleo or low carb diets might like to know about and that might help them in their quest for ideal health.
Today I thought I would list them by subject.  If you would like to read them just click on the link.

You can also click to be automatically sent updates when published by subscribing.

Enjoy and remember...

Cancer Without Disease - The new approach to the prevention and reversal of cancer...

Everyday we get cancer cells in our body and, if our immune system is healthy, we keep them in check.
When our immune system gets imbalanced or the burdens of oxidative stress or toxins become overwhelming, these abnormal cells can grow out of control, metastasize, and spread to other parts of the body.  When this happens it is very difficult to reverse.
Whenever possible, the key to cancer is prevention and/or have cancer without disease.
The new approaches for treating and preventing cancer are very exciting but are not common knowledge.
Today the standard approach is to wait until the disease gets obvious enough by doctors to require intervention and then use chemo therapy and radiation to kill the cancerous cells.
This is not the approach that I would use.  As a researcher and consultant I have access to new information that has not become public knowledge and may, in fact, be purposely downplayed by special interests.

The new approach to cancer treatment focuses on 3 main areas:
1.  Anti-Angiogenesis - Stopping the growth of blood vessels
2.  Metastasis - Stopping cancer cells from moving from a controlled encapsulation (tumor) and spreading
3.  Stimulate the thymus to create natural killer cells

Here are 3 short videos that explain how this works.

The basis for a new book called Victory Over Cancer...

Victory Over Cancer...

I have been following the work of Dr. Matthias Rath since he worked with Linus Pauling and developed their cure for cardiovascular disease back in the 90"s.  Their program is the one I use to keep my arteries crystal clear and free of plaque and damage, verified by my cardiologist last Sept.

He lives in Europe now and has been focusing his work on cancer.  He has a new book out entitled Victory Over Cancer.  I have been following his research in this area as well and have been using it in my own health program.

Here is a video that explains how it works:

This is a short-form fact sheet on what he has discovered.

Help a grass roots movement get GMO's out in the open, and properly labeled on foods...

Genetically Modified Organisms, or GMO's, are foods that have been genetically engineered to hold up to special pesticides better.   The seeds are altered and then patented so, in essence, companies like Monsanto can own the seed and the pesticide used on that seed.  Ownership of seeds is very controversial.   Small independent farmers are being forced, in some cases, to use these seeds and there have been law suits because of it.

These foods have been out for a while but they are not labeled as such.   People are becoming more and more unhealthy because they seem to be toxic to the immune system and allergies to these foods are becoming more and more prevalent.

Over 40 countries require labeling of these foods but not yet here in the US.   It's a big battle.

The GMO problem you and your family needs to know about...
http://permaculture.org.au/2010/02/22/the-big-gmo-cover-up/

Dr. Mercola is helping promote a grass roots effort, as are others, to allow THE PEOPLE to have the final say on whether these foods should be labeled GMO's and not thought of as NATURAL.

Please watch his video below.   I have also listed the top 10 GMO foods for you to print and copy.

1.  Corn - Corn has been modified to create its own insecticide.  The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has declared that tons of genetically modified corn have been introduced for human consumption. Monsanto has revealed that half of the US sweet corn farms are planted with genetically modified seed.  Mice fed with GM corn were discovered to have smaller offspring and fertility problems.

2.  Soy - Soy has also been genetically modified to resist herbicides.  Soy products include soy flour, tofu, soy beverages, soybean oil, and other products that may include pastries, baked products and edible oil. Hamsters fed with GM soy were unable to have offspring and suffered a high mortality rate.

3.  Cotton - Like corn and soy, cotton has been designed to resist pesticides.  It is considered food because its oil can be consumed.  It's introduction in Chinese agriculture has produced a chemical that kills cotton bollworm reducing the incidences of pests not only in cotton crops but also in neighboring fields of soybeans and corn.  Incidentally, thousands of Indian farmers suffered severe rashes upon exposure to BT cotton.

4.  Papaya - The virus-resistant variety of papaya was commercially introduced in Hawaii in 1999. Transgenic papayas comprised three-fourths of the total Hawaiian papaya crop. Monsanto bestowed upon Tamil Nadu Agricultural University in Coimbatore, India, technology for developing papaya resistant to the ringspot virus in that country.

5.  Rice - This staple food from South East Asia has now been genetically modified to contain a high amount of vitamin A.  Allegedly there are reports of rice varieties containing human genes to be grown in the US.  The rice will create human proteins useful for dealing with infant diarrhea in the 3rd world.  China Daily, an online journal, reported potential serious public health and environmental problems with genetically modified rice considering its tendency to cause allergic reactions with the concurrent possibility of gene transfers.

6.  Tomatoes - Tomatoes have now been genetically engineered for longer shelf life by preventing them from easily rotting and degrading.  In a test conducted to determine the safety of GM tomatoes some animal subjects died within a few weeks after consuming them.

7.  Rapeseed - In Canada, this crop was renamed Canola to differentiate it from non-edible rapeseed. Food stuff produced from rapeseed includes rapeseed oil (canola oil) used to process cooking oil and margarine.  Honey can also be produced from GM rapeseed.  German food surveillance authorities discovered as much as a third of the total pollen present in Canadian honey may be from GM pollen. In fact some honey products from Canada were also discovered to have pollen from GM rapeseed.

8.  Dairy products - It has been discovered that 22 percent of cows in the U.S. were injected with recombinant (genetically modified) bovine growth hormone (rbGH).  This Monsanto created hormone artificially forces cows to increase their milk production by 15 percent.  Milk from cows treated with this milk inducing hormone contains increased levels of IGF-1 (insulin growth factors -1).  Humans also have IGF-1 in their system.   Scientists have expressed concerns that increased levels of IGF-1 in humans have been associated with colon and breast cancer.

9.  Potatoes - Mice fed with potatoes engineered with Bacillus thuringiensis var. Kurstaki Cry 1 were found to have toxins in their system.  Despite claims to the contrary this shows that Cry1 toxin was stable in the mouse gut. When the health risks were revealed it sparked a debate.

10.  Peas - Peas that have been genetically modified have been found to cause immune responses in mice and possibly even in humans.  A gene from kidney beans was inserted into the peas creating a protein that functions as a pesticide.

How did the world become this fat so fast - Now you will know

I have had my health site online for nearly 10 years.  It was a culmination of 25 years worth of knowledge in my clinical work with people when I started it.  I have been publishing HealthBlogger since 2005.  I wanted to get this information out to help improve the lives of those that cared to read it.

For all that time I have been sharing the latest information on how hormones control obesity and that calories in and calories out is not the whole truth.   In fact, it is far from it.
On this page I show the research on Insulin and Metabolic Syndrome.  http://cwiechert.com/SyndromeX.html
On this page I outline how Glucagon and Insulin are the main culprits in the war on fat.  http://cwiechert.com/weightloss.html
This information was from the top minds and researchers at the time and has been confirmed by the latest research of Dr. Lustig.  It has since been updated in a new series called The Skinny On Obesity.

This series is a MUST WATCH...  You really need to know this information, and make the appropriate changes in your lifestyle.

These are very informative and easy to follow.

Remineralizing teeth and bones, naturally...

Want to cut down dental bills?  Are you concerned about bone health?

In the 30's Dr. Weston Price, a dentist, traveled the world studying people, cultures, and the health of their teeth.  The diets he found varied but when the people ate the natural foods around them, what he called a Primitive Diet, got plenty of sun, and ate grass fed animals or butter, they not only had perfect teeth but they repaired themselves.

Dental cavities were either non-existent or he saw evidence of self-repair.  When you compare this to our Standard Americanized Diet, often referred to as the SAD Diet, the complete opposite is true.

When he came back to the states he began looking for the formula of nutrients that were responsible.  He called one of them Factor X which we now know as Vitamin K2.  I have blogged a lot about it's wonderful properties.

Also responsible was a high trace mineral intake, most of which is now missing from the soils that feed our plants, and a high vitamin A in an oil soluble form, like from Cod Liver Oil or raw grass fed butter.

Turns out the raw grass fed butter has both the vitamin A needed and the K2 content.  K2 can also be found in the Japanese fermented food Natto and in raw organic farm cheeses like Brie and Gouda.

For many these foods are hard to find and so I have experimented over the years with a program that can do the same thing.  It will keep bones and teeth strong and self-repairing by re-mineralizing them and will remove calcium from the soft tissues.  There are many other side benefits that I have discussed on previous blogs.  Please look for them.

Vitamin D3 and remineralizing teeth...

K2 & bone & tooth health

Xylitol and tooth decay...

The nutrients that are critical are the following and the ones I take:

Vitamin D3 10,000 IU's - I recommend 2 caps w/ BFT

Cod Liver Oil  - 2 caps w/ BFT and 2 Caps w/ DNR

Cal/Mag w 72 trace minerals - 2 tabs w/ BFT and 2 tabs w/DNR

Time Released PureWay C - 1 Tablet w/ BFT and 1 w/ DNR

Vitamin K1 & K2 Complex - Take 2 caps daily.

I have used this program to repair a weak spot in one of my teeth.  I was doing everything but the A with no response.  When I added it, it did the trick.  These supplements are synergistic.

Other things to keep in mind with dental health:
Drink green tea to keep bacteria low.
Use a toothpaste with Novamin.
Gargle with hydrogen perioxide daily.  Free oxygen kills germs.
Stop drinking soft drinks with phosphoric acid that corrodes the enamel.
Watch other acid drinks and foods.

If you have gum disease add the following:
Ubiquinol - Take 1 cap w/ BFT and 1 w/ DNR
PureWay time released C - Take 3 tablets w/ BFT and 3 w/ DNR

Don't miss watching this video.  It includes some strong language but I like it.

Dramatic proof vitamin C in high amounts can save lives... Must see.

Humans, bats, and guinea pigs cannot produce vitamin C naturally.  We have lost the gene.  Goats, as well as other animals,  can internally manufacture more than 13,000 mg of vitamin C daily to maintain its optimal health when it is not facing any significant challenges to its health.  Even more amazing is that these animals are also believed by some to produce as much as 100,000 mg of vitamin C daily when faced with life-threatening degrees of infectious or toxic stress!

Living proof, vitamin C in high amounts can save lives, a dramatic 60 Minute Report.

Why you should be taking fish oil, omega 3's, or better yet, Krill Oil...

Some of you reading HealthBlogger still don't understand the benefits to your health of taking in large amounts of omega 3's which are high in DHA and EPA.  Our modern day American diet has 20 times the levels of omega 6 fats which are pro-inflammatory compared to omega 3's which are anti-inflammatory.
Folks, that's 20 to one!  It should be about 1 to 1 like our paleo ancestors.

No wonder many of you are taking pain relievers much of the time.

The only way to really rectify this problem is to stop eating packaged and processed foods, fast food, and using corn, soy bean, and other vegetable oils high in omega 6.
Even if you eat the healthy mono unsaturates like EVO, or good saturated fats like butter, coconut oil, and grass fed beef, you will still most likely be too low.

Eskimos, before they were Americanized, ate a diet that was 80% fat, mostly from fish and whale blubber, and were extremely healthy with low heart disease, diabetes, and cancer.  We can learn from them.

Studies are showing that perhaps higher levels are even better than the recommended 3 grams a day often sited as a good daily dose.

The big questions are these:

Should we eat a lot of fish to get them?

Is purified fish oil the best way to get these important oils?

What is this Krill Oil I have been hearing about?

Eat to live, don't live to eat...

We are headed for another year.  2012 starts tomorrow.  You want to be healthier and lose a little weight without becoming a fanatic?  Or will you just do the usual fad diet?  It is human nature for people to fall in love with the idea of things rather than the reality of things.  This is why people start diets in January and lose interest in them by about March.

Here are the facts...
50% of most American diets are composed of carbohydrates.  Mostly in the form of grains, breads, cereals and simple starches..
Historically and genetically it should be between 20% to 30%.  Most Americans eat enough protein.

If you want to become healthier and leaner you must lower that ratio.  It is best to eat more green leafy vegetables and fruits rather than grain products.  The research is clear on this.
If you lower your carbs you must replace it with something healthy.  That something should be animal fats, raw nuts, and healthy fats like olive oil, palm oil, and coconut oil.

I know you have been taught that saturated fats and animal fats are bad but that is old news and very wrong.

Here is the evidence...

The Big Fat Lie

Sugar and Starch.

This year try moving to an eating pattern closer to The Paleo Diet.

If you need structure follow my fat loss life style program.

To make sure you are getting all 90 nutrients for great health consider doing at least the following supplemental program:

Nutrex Hawaiian Spirulina Pacifica...  Take 3 tablets w/breakfast and 3
w/dinner.

Superior Krill Oil - Take 2 capsules w/breakfast.

Why Spirulina...

Why Krill Oil...

Eat 3 meals a day and snack on raw nuts which can be found at Trader Joe's at a nice price.  Focus on raw almonds, brazil nuts, walnuts, and low salt versions of macadamia and pistachios.  A small handful between meals will do wonders in stabilizing your blood sugar and lowering your appetite.

Try these changes for 30 days and see how you feel.

If you are dealing with a chronic issue then consult with me directly for a program personalized just for you.

Can cutting carbohydrates from your diet makes you live longer?

It's an extraordinary claim. But scientists say you can extend your life AND stay fit throughout old age - just by a change of diet that switches on your youth gene...

For centuries man has dreamed of being immortal, fixated on tales of magic fountains that restore youth, the rejuvenating power of a vampire’s bite or asses’ milk.
More recently came claims that injections of monkey glands or hormone supplements would make us live longer.
But so far, what’s actually worked are medical advances such as vaccines and better living conditions. Over the past century these have boosted average life expectancy by far more than 50 per cent, from 50 to 88.
The problem is that this longevity does not mean a healthier life. Indeed, thanks to chronic diseases such as diabetes and arthritis, we’re becoming like the Struldbruggs — the miserable characters in Gulliver’s Travels who were immortal, but still suffered from all the diseases of old age.
Gradually they lost their teeth, their hair, their sense of smell and taste. All their diseases got worse and their memory faded, so they had no idea who their friends and relations were. At funerals they wept because they couldn’t die.
But now a U.S. geneticist is thought to have discovered the secret to a long life, full of health and energy. And the answer might be as simple as cutting down on carbohydrates.
Professor Cynthia Kenyon, whom many experts believe should win the Nobel Prize for her research into ageing, has discovered that the carbohydrates we eat — from bananas and potatoes to bread, pasta, biscuits and cakes — directly affect two key genes that govern youthfulness and longevity.
She made her remarkable breakthrough after studying roundworms, specifically the C.elegans, a worm just a millimetre in size that lives in soil in temperate climates all over the world.
By tweaking some of their genes she has been able to help these worms live up to six times longer than normal. ‘Not only that, but we also know how to make them stay healthy all that time as well,’ she told an audience at the Wellcome Collection in London earlier this month.
So, what do worms have to do with us?
A great deal, it seems. Professor Kenyon’s work has been successfully repeated in labs around the world — the genes she found controlling ageing in worms do the same thing in rats and mice, probably monkeys, and there are signs they are active in humans, too.
This work has revolutionised our understanding of ageing, explains Jeff Holly, professor of clinical sciences at Bristol University.
‘Ten years ago we thought ageing was probably the result of a slow decay, a sort of rusting,’ he says. ‘But Professor Kenyon has shown that it’s not about wear and tear, but instead it is controlled by genes. That opens the possibility of slowing it down with drugs.’
So how does a worm hold the key to human ageing?
At 18 days old the average roundworm is flabby, sluggish and wrinkled. Two days later it will probably be dead.
However, Professor Kenyon, based at the University of California, San Francisco, found that damping down the activity of just one of their genes had a dramatic effect.
‘Instead of dying at about 20 days, our first set of mutant worms carried on living to more than 40 days,’ she says.
‘And they weren’t sluggish and worn out — they behaved like youngsters. It was a real shock. In human terms it was the equivalent of talking to someone you thought was about 30 and finding they were actually 60.’
With more sophisticated genetic manipulation, she now has some worms that have lived for an astonishing 144 days. An increase of that proportion would allow humans to live to 450.
Scientists already knew how to make laboratory animals live longer and healthier lives — you just cut back their calories to about three-quarters of their normal amount.
It’s not a practical solution for humans, because you feel cold and hungry all the time.
But what Professor Kenyon found out was why drastically reducing calories has such a remarkable effect.
She discovered that it changed the way two crucial genes behaved.  It turned down the gene that controls insulin which in turn switched on another gene which acted like an elixir of life.
"We jokingly called the first gene the Grim Reaper because when it’s switched on the lifespan is fairly short," she explains.
The second "elixir" gene seems to bring all the anti-aging benefits.  Its proper name is DAF 16 but was quickly nicknamed "Sweet Sixteen" because it turned the worms into teenagers.
"It sends out instructions to a whole range of repair and renovation genes," says Professor Kenyon.
"Your supply of natural antioxidants goes up, damping down damaging free radicals."
These are the compounds produced by our body and the environment which are linked to a host of diseases from cancer to Alzheimers.
The Sweet Sixteen gene also "boosts compounds that make sure the skin and muscle-building proteins are working properly, the immune system becomes more active to fight infection, and genes that are active in cancer get turned off," she adds.
Kenyon had stumbled on the genetic equivalent of Shangri-La, the fictional valley where people could live for years without really aging.
Discovering the Grim Reaper gene has prompted the professor to dramatically alter her own diet by cutting right back on carbohydrates. That’s because carbs make your body produce more insulin (to mop up the extra blood sugar carbs  produce), and more insulin means a more active Grim Reaper, so the vital second gene, the "elixir" one, won’t get turned on.  To test this, last year she added a tiny amount of sugary glucose to the normal diet of some of her worms that had had their genes engineered so they were living much longer, healthier lives.
"The effect was remarkable," she says. "The sugary glucose blocked the youthful genes and they lost most of the health gains."
But was this just a special feature of the roundworm or did we all have it?
Following Kenyon’s lead other researchers started looking for the Grim Reaper/ Sweet Sixteen combination in other animals and, of course, in humans.  They found it.
One clue came from a small remote community of dwarves living in northern Ecuador that is cancer-free. They are missing the part of the Grim Reaper gene that controls a hormone called insulin-like growth factor. The downside is they only grow to 4ft tall because the hormone is needed for growth.
But this missing bit of the Grim Reaper gene also means they don’t develop cancer and are less likely to suffer from heart disease or obesity.
Professor Jeff Holly, who specializes in insulin-like growth factor, confirms that it is linked to cancer of the prostate, breast, and colon.
In fact, raised insulin levels triggered by high carbohydrate consumption could be what connects many of our big killers.
Research is at it's early stage, but raised insulin triggers an increase in cholesterol production in the liver, makes the walls of blood vessels contract so blood pressure goes up, and stimulates the release of fats called triglycerides (linked to heart disease).
Professor Kenyon’s work is creating a wave of excitement among drug companies who’ve been researching molecules that will damp down the Grim Reaper and boost Sweet Sixteen.  Thus giving us the benefits of very low-calorie diets without the penalties. So far none are very near being approved.
One way to reduce insulin levels is to exercise, which makes you more sensitive to it, which in turn means you need less of it. It also gives another health benefit in a surprising way. Exercise actually increases the level of damaging free radicals which stimulates the body to produce more protective anti-oxidants.
So should we all be trying to cut back on carbs to reduce our insulin levels?
It is a suggestion that flies in the face of 30 years of health advice to have a lower fat intake and eat plenty of long-lasting complex carbohydrates to keep the body supplied with energy.
There is no denying the extraordinary breakthrough Kenyon’s work represents and she "deserves the Nobel Prize for her findings about aging," says David Gems, Deputy Director of the Institute for Healthy Aging at University College, London.
However, he isn’t convinced we know enough for us all to start eating a low-carb diet.
"The exact role of insulin in health and aging is a promising and fascinating area," he says. "But I’m not sure the evidence for the benefit of cutting carbohydrates and keeping insulin levels down is strong enough yet."
But Professor Kenyon herself doesn’t need convincing.
"Carbohydrates, especially refined ones like sugar, make you produce lots of extra insulin. I’ve been keeping my intake really low ever since I discovered this.
"I’ve cut out all starch such as potatoes, noodles, rice, bread, and pasta.  Instead I have salads, but no sweet dressing, lots of olive oil and nuts, tons of green vegetables along with cheese, chicken, and eggs.
"I’ll have a hamburger without a bun and fish without batter or chips.  I eat some fruit every day, but not too much, and almost no processed food.  I stay away from sweets except 80 per cent chocolate."
She is adamant it will be well worthwhile.  "You could have two completely different careers if you could stay healthy to 90," she says.  "How fascinating that would be."
