Dramatic proof vitamin C in high amounts can save lives... Must see.

Humans, bats, and guinea pigs cannot produce vitamin C naturally.  We have lost the gene.  Goats, as well as other animals,  can internally manufacture more than 13,000 mg of vitamin C daily to maintain its optimal health when it is not facing any significant challenges to its health.  Even more amazing is that these animals are also believed by some to produce as much as 100,000 mg of vitamin C daily when faced with life-threatening degrees of infectious or toxic stress!

Living proof, vitamin C in high amounts can save lives, a dramatic 60 Minute Report.

Why you should be taking fish oil, omega 3's, or better yet, Krill Oil...

Some of you reading HealthBlogger still don't understand the benefits to your health of taking in large amounts of omega 3's which are high in DHA and EPA.  Our modern day American diet has 20 times the levels of omega 6 fats which are pro-inflammatory compared to omega 3's which are anti-inflammatory.
Folks, that's 20 to one!  It should be about 1 to 1 like our paleo ancestors.

No wonder many of you are taking pain relievers much of the time.

The only way to really rectify this problem is to stop eating packaged and processed foods, fast food, and using corn, soy bean, and other vegetable oils high in omega 6.
Even if you eat the healthy mono unsaturates like EVO, or good saturated fats like butter, coconut oil, and grass fed beef, you will still most likely be too low.

Eskimos, before they were Americanized, ate a diet that was 80% fat, mostly from fish and whale blubber, and were extremely healthy with low heart disease, diabetes, and cancer.  We can learn from them.

Studies are showing that perhaps higher levels are even better than the recommended 3 grams a day often sited as a good daily dose.

The big questions are these:

Should we eat a lot of fish to get them?

Is purified fish oil the best way to get these important oils?

What is this Krill Oil I have been hearing about?

Eat to live, don't live to eat...

We are headed for another year.  2012 starts tomorrow.  You want to be healthier and lose a little weight without becoming a fanatic?  Or will you just do the usual fad diet?  It is human nature for people to fall in love with the idea of things rather than the reality of things.  This is why people start diets in January and lose interest in them by about March.

Here are the facts...
50% of most American diets are composed of carbohydrates.  Mostly in the form of grains, breads, cereals and simple starches..
Historically and genetically it should be between 20% to 30%.  Most Americans eat enough protein.

If you want to become healthier and leaner you must lower that ratio.  It is best to eat more green leafy vegetables and fruits rather than grain products.  The research is clear on this.
If you lower your carbs you must replace it with something healthy.  That something should be animal fats, raw nuts, and healthy fats like olive oil, palm oil, and coconut oil.

I know you have been taught that saturated fats and animal fats are bad but that is old news and very wrong.

Here is the evidence...

The Big Fat Lie

Sugar and Starch.

This year try moving to an eating pattern closer to The Paleo Diet.

If you need structure follow my fat loss life style program.

To make sure you are getting all 90 nutrients for great health consider doing at least the following supplemental program:

Nutrex Hawaiian Spirulina Pacifica...  Take 3 tablets w/breakfast and 3
w/dinner.

Superior Krill Oil - Take 2 capsules w/breakfast.

Why Spirulina...

Why Krill Oil...

Eat 3 meals a day and snack on raw nuts which can be found at Trader Joe's at a nice price.  Focus on raw almonds, brazil nuts, walnuts, and low salt versions of macadamia and pistachios.  A small handful between meals will do wonders in stabilizing your blood sugar and lowering your appetite.

Try these changes for 30 days and see how you feel.

If you are dealing with a chronic issue then consult with me directly for a program personalized just for you.

Can cutting carbohydrates from your diet makes you live longer?

It's an extraordinary claim. But scientists say you can extend your life AND stay fit throughout old age - just by a change of diet that switches on your youth gene...

For centuries man has dreamed of being immortal, fixated on tales of magic fountains that restore youth, the rejuvenating power of a vampire’s bite or asses’ milk.
More recently came claims that injections of monkey glands or hormone supplements would make us live longer.
But so far, what’s actually worked are medical advances such as vaccines and better living conditions. Over the past century these have boosted average life expectancy by far more than 50 per cent, from 50 to 88.
The problem is that this longevity does not mean a healthier life. Indeed, thanks to chronic diseases such as diabetes and arthritis, we’re becoming like the Struldbruggs — the miserable characters in Gulliver’s Travels who were immortal, but still suffered from all the diseases of old age.
Gradually they lost their teeth, their hair, their sense of smell and taste. All their diseases got worse and their memory faded, so they had no idea who their friends and relations were. At funerals they wept because they couldn’t die.
But now a U.S. geneticist is thought to have discovered the secret to a long life, full of health and energy. And the answer might be as simple as cutting down on carbohydrates.
Professor Cynthia Kenyon, whom many experts believe should win the Nobel Prize for her research into ageing, has discovered that the carbohydrates we eat — from bananas and potatoes to bread, pasta, biscuits and cakes — directly affect two key genes that govern youthfulness and longevity.
She made her remarkable breakthrough after studying roundworms, specifically the C.elegans, a worm just a millimetre in size that lives in soil in temperate climates all over the world.
By tweaking some of their genes she has been able to help these worms live up to six times longer than normal. ‘Not only that, but we also know how to make them stay healthy all that time as well,’ she told an audience at the Wellcome Collection in London earlier this month.
So, what do worms have to do with us?
A great deal, it seems. Professor Kenyon’s work has been successfully repeated in labs around the world — the genes she found controlling ageing in worms do the same thing in rats and mice, probably monkeys, and there are signs they are active in humans, too.
This work has revolutionised our understanding of ageing, explains Jeff Holly, professor of clinical sciences at Bristol University.
‘Ten years ago we thought ageing was probably the result of a slow decay, a sort of rusting,’ he says. ‘But Professor Kenyon has shown that it’s not about wear and tear, but instead it is controlled by genes. That opens the possibility of slowing it down with drugs.’
So how does a worm hold the key to human ageing?
At 18 days old the average roundworm is flabby, sluggish and wrinkled. Two days later it will probably be dead.
However, Professor Kenyon, based at the University of California, San Francisco, found that damping down the activity of just one of their genes had a dramatic effect.
‘Instead of dying at about 20 days, our first set of mutant worms carried on living to more than 40 days,’ she says.
‘And they weren’t sluggish and worn out — they behaved like youngsters. It was a real shock. In human terms it was the equivalent of talking to someone you thought was about 30 and finding they were actually 60.’
With more sophisticated genetic manipulation, she now has some worms that have lived for an astonishing 144 days. An increase of that proportion would allow humans to live to 450.
Scientists already knew how to make laboratory animals live longer and healthier lives — you just cut back their calories to about three-quarters of their normal amount.
It’s not a practical solution for humans, because you feel cold and hungry all the time.
But what Professor Kenyon found out was why drastically reducing calories has such a remarkable effect.
She discovered that it changed the way two crucial genes behaved.  It turned down the gene that controls insulin which in turn switched on another gene which acted like an elixir of life.
"We jokingly called the first gene the Grim Reaper because when it’s switched on the lifespan is fairly short," she explains.
The second "elixir" gene seems to bring all the anti-aging benefits.  Its proper name is DAF 16 but was quickly nicknamed "Sweet Sixteen" because it turned the worms into teenagers.
"It sends out instructions to a whole range of repair and renovation genes," says Professor Kenyon.
"Your supply of natural antioxidants goes up, damping down damaging free radicals."
These are the compounds produced by our body and the environment which are linked to a host of diseases from cancer to Alzheimers.
The Sweet Sixteen gene also "boosts compounds that make sure the skin and muscle-building proteins are working properly, the immune system becomes more active to fight infection, and genes that are active in cancer get turned off," she adds.
Kenyon had stumbled on the genetic equivalent of Shangri-La, the fictional valley where people could live for years without really aging.
Discovering the Grim Reaper gene has prompted the professor to dramatically alter her own diet by cutting right back on carbohydrates. That’s because carbs make your body produce more insulin (to mop up the extra blood sugar carbs  produce), and more insulin means a more active Grim Reaper, so the vital second gene, the "elixir" one, won’t get turned on.  To test this, last year she added a tiny amount of sugary glucose to the normal diet of some of her worms that had had their genes engineered so they were living much longer, healthier lives.
"The effect was remarkable," she says. "The sugary glucose blocked the youthful genes and they lost most of the health gains."
But was this just a special feature of the roundworm or did we all have it?
Following Kenyon’s lead other researchers started looking for the Grim Reaper/ Sweet Sixteen combination in other animals and, of course, in humans.  They found it.
One clue came from a small remote community of dwarves living in northern Ecuador that is cancer-free. They are missing the part of the Grim Reaper gene that controls a hormone called insulin-like growth factor. The downside is they only grow to 4ft tall because the hormone is needed for growth.
But this missing bit of the Grim Reaper gene also means they don’t develop cancer and are less likely to suffer from heart disease or obesity.
Professor Jeff Holly, who specializes in insulin-like growth factor, confirms that it is linked to cancer of the prostate, breast, and colon.
In fact, raised insulin levels triggered by high carbohydrate consumption could be what connects many of our big killers.
Research is at it's early stage, but raised insulin triggers an increase in cholesterol production in the liver, makes the walls of blood vessels contract so blood pressure goes up, and stimulates the release of fats called triglycerides (linked to heart disease).
Professor Kenyon’s work is creating a wave of excitement among drug companies who’ve been researching molecules that will damp down the Grim Reaper and boost Sweet Sixteen.  Thus giving us the benefits of very low-calorie diets without the penalties. So far none are very near being approved.
One way to reduce insulin levels is to exercise, which makes you more sensitive to it, which in turn means you need less of it. It also gives another health benefit in a surprising way. Exercise actually increases the level of damaging free radicals which stimulates the body to produce more protective anti-oxidants.
So should we all be trying to cut back on carbs to reduce our insulin levels?
It is a suggestion that flies in the face of 30 years of health advice to have a lower fat intake and eat plenty of long-lasting complex carbohydrates to keep the body supplied with energy.
There is no denying the extraordinary breakthrough Kenyon’s work represents and she "deserves the Nobel Prize for her findings about aging," says David Gems, Deputy Director of the Institute for Healthy Aging at University College, London.
However, he isn’t convinced we know enough for us all to start eating a low-carb diet.
"The exact role of insulin in health and aging is a promising and fascinating area," he says. "But I’m not sure the evidence for the benefit of cutting carbohydrates and keeping insulin levels down is strong enough yet."
But Professor Kenyon herself doesn’t need convincing.
"Carbohydrates, especially refined ones like sugar, make you produce lots of extra insulin. I’ve been keeping my intake really low ever since I discovered this.
"I’ve cut out all starch such as potatoes, noodles, rice, bread, and pasta.  Instead I have salads, but no sweet dressing, lots of olive oil and nuts, tons of green vegetables along with cheese, chicken, and eggs.
"I’ll have a hamburger without a bun and fish without batter or chips.  I eat some fruit every day, but not too much, and almost no processed food.  I stay away from sweets except 80 per cent chocolate."
She is adamant it will be well worthwhile.  "You could have two completely different careers if you could stay healthy to 90," she says.  "How fascinating that would be."

What is the best sugar substitute these days?

When it comes to alternatives to sugar I must admit I have come a little late to the party.   I just don't use sweeteners in my house as a rule.  Sugar is not my thing.  I am German mostly and I love fats and salts.  Never met a sausage or salami I didn't like or potato chips either. Those are my issues to stay away from.

But a few years ago I did research on a new sugar that lowers tooth decay and even helps remineralize your teeth.   I have been using a tooth paste with this sugar ever since.   The sugar is called Xylitol.

Now recent research suggests that it has many health benefits and perhaps is the best choice for most of you as an alternative to table sugar or honey.

Also hearing great things about Coconut Palm Sugar, but haven't tried it yet.

Here are some links to look at for your own research:

They have told you sugar is bad, but surprise

To age or not to age... A 5 week study that blew everyone away...

Can you radically change the health of the human body in 5 weeks by changing diet?  That was what these scientists set out to prove.  "To Age or Not to Age" is a one-hour documentary following health guru Leslie Kenton on her quest to discover a remedy for aging.
The documentary follows the progress of eight people on a five week trial.  It includes interviews with medical practitioners, exercise physiologists, naturapaths, traditional healers, and scientists that allow the trial group and viewers an insight into the aging process and ways in which it might be reversed. The results of the trial were astounding and startled even Leslie Kenton herself.
The documentary is a beacon of hope.  By demonstrating that through a combination of orthodox medicine and natural health practices we may learn to prevent degenerative diseases, free up hospital waiting lists, and enjoy aging with enthusiasm, vitality, and health.
Everyone's program was designed to eat masses of green leafy foods and more fish, meat, and chicken.   They were asked to cut out all breads, cereals, and sweets of any kind and to drink lots of water.  They were also asked to cut out other starchy foods like rice and potatoes.  The one test they focused on most was Serum Insulin levels which aren't check routinely by your doctor but what I and other health scientists believe is the number one factor in healthy aging.  See what happened to their weight and levels of pain.

Enjoy and remember... "You're never too old to become younger"... Mae West

"Half of all Americans to be obese by 2030"

Good Sunday Morning...

Woke up to an article in The Huffington Post's section on health entitled... "Half of all Americans to be obese by 2030".

There is no reason for this.  We know how to reverse it.  Diets come and go but facts are facts.  In nutritional science there are foods that are considered essential for human life and those that are not.

Proteins are essential.  The word protein means "of first importance".  You need at least 12 of the 20+ proteins from foods to remain healthy.  Fats are essential and you need at least 3 to remain healthy.   60 minerals and 16 vitamins are essential. Carbohydrates are NON-essential but fruits and veggies that are colorful are loaded with antioxidants and nutrients that are beneficial like fiber.
All other carbs increase our odds of becoming sick and overweight.

The secret to a long and healthy life is found in this section of Dr. Joel Wallech's Lecture... Look for it...

Also, as we grow older, our genes become less and less likely to deal well with "new foods" like grains, legumes, and dairy (especially milk).  Most inflammation comes from one or more of these food types.

Sorry, I don't make the rules, I just observe them.

Specific health issues that can be fixed with a Paleo Diet...

Coronary Calcium Beats C-Reactive Protein for Predicting Heart Attack and Stroke Risk, Study Finds...

ScienceDaily (Aug. 20, 2011) — The presence of calcium in coronary arteries is a much better predictor of heart attack and stroke than C-reactive protein among people with normal levels of LDL cholesterol, according to a study of more than 2,000 people led by a Johns Hopkins heart specialist.
Results of the study, published in the August 19, 2011 issue of The Lancet, have important implications for deciding whether cholesterol-lowering statin medication should be prescribed for people who have heart disease risk factors but normal levels of LDL, the so-called "bad" cholesterol. An estimated 6 million American adults fall into that gray-zone category.

The goal of the new study, which followed 2,083 people for six years, was to further refine who was at higher risk and, therefore, might benefit from taking statin medications. Conversely, the study also looked to define which groups may be at low risk and not in need of the drugs. The participants in the study were volunteers in the ongoing Multi-Ethnic Study on Atherosclerosis, known as MESA, which is an NIH-funded Hopkins-affiliated study.

"This was a direct comparison to see which patients with a normal LDL level of less than 130 mg/dL would have the greater risk of having a heart attack or stroke -- those with evidence of calcium in coronary arteries, as determined on a cardiac CT test, or those with high levels of C-reactive protein, which is measured in blood and is an indicator of inflammation somewhere in the body," says Michael J. Blaha, M.D. M.P.H, a cardiology fellow at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and the Johns Hopkins Heart and Vascular Institute, who is the lead author of the study.

Blaha and colleagues found that 95 percent of the heart attacks, strokes or heart-related deaths in the study population occurred in people with some measurable calcium in their heart arteries. Meanwhile, 13.4 percent of those with the highest levels of coronary calcium (with scores greater than 100 on a calcium scoring test) had a heart attack or stroke during the study, whereas only 2 percent of those with high C-reactive protein in their blood, but no calcium buildup, had a heart attack or stroke.

In their study, the researchers determined that high levels of C-reactive protein in the blood, a score at or above 2 milligrams per liter, offered little predictive value after accounting for such risk factors as age, gender, ethnicity, hypertension, obesity, diabetes, smoking and a family history of heart disease.

"A calcium test directly looks for the disease we propose to treat with statins. Without measurable amounts of calcium, which indicates atherosclerosis, you are likely to be at very low risk in the short-term," explains Blaha.

This new study was designed to address some unanswered questions from a 2008 study called JUPITER, short for the Justification for the Use of Statins in Primary Prevention: An Interventional Tool Evaluating Rosuvastatin. That study found a 46 percent reduction in heart attacks among people with normal LDL cholesterol and a high level of C-reactive protein who took the statin medication rosuvastatin, which is marketed as Crestor.

JUPITER only included people with high C-reactive protein and none of those participants were tested to see whether they had evidence of calcium in their coronary arteries. So, Blaha says, it could not be determined from JUPITER whether people with low levels of C-reactive protein would benefit in the same way from statin therapy, or how the presence of coronary calcium may have affected the results.

All of the participants in the MESA trial had undergone coronary CT scanning, known as a calcium scoring test. Blaha and colleagues identified a group of participants in MESA who had high C-reactive protein levels and fit the criteria for JUPITER. The researchers also selected a group from MESA who had low levels of C-reactive protein. Then they were able to directly compare the prognostic importance of coronary artery calcium to C-reactive protein.

A statistical comparison of the results showed that among those with no measurable coronary calcium, it would be necessary to treat 549 patients with statin medication in order to prevent one heart attack. However, for those with high levels of coronary calcium buildup (with a calcium score greater than 100), the predicted number needed to treat to prevent one heart attack was only 24.

"Statin medications, which are a lifelong therapy, should not be considered the same as other preventive measures, such as diet and exercise, to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease," says Roger Blumenthal, M.D., a cardiologist, professor of Medicine and director of the Ciccarone Center for the Prevention of Heart Disease at Johns Hopkins. He also was a co-investigator on the new study. "All drugs have the potential to cause side effects in some people, although with statins, the side effects are rare," he adds.

According to Blumenthal, "Many patients fall into the gray zone of being healthy with normal LDL cholesterol, but also having some risk factors, including being overweight, having elevated blood sugar levels or a family history of heart disease. Our study provides clear evidence that high levels of calcium in coronary arteries will increase the risk of a heart attack or a stroke. And the risk increases with the amount of calcium, whether or not patients have high levels of C-reactive protein."

"While not everyone needs a calcium scoring test," Blaha says, "we believe looking for calcification in coronary vessels in certain patients makes sense in order to predict who may benefit from statin therapy because the test gets right to the heart of the disease we want to treat."

"Our data support recent American Heart Association guidelines, which say it is reasonable to order a coronary calcium scan for adults who are considered to be at intermediate risk of a heart attack over the next 10 years. A high coronary calcium score would indicate that statin therapy would likely be a useful strategy to lower that person's cardiovascular risk," according to Blumenthal.

In addition to Blaha and Blumenthal, other Johns Hopkins investigators involved in this study were study senior investigator Khurram Nasir, M.D., M.P.H., who is now at Yale University School of Medicine in New Haven, Conn.; Andrew DeFilippis, M.D., M.Sc.; and João Lima, M.D. Other researchers were Matthew Budoff, M.D., at the Los Angeles Biomedical Research Institute at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in Torrance, Calif.; Juan Rivera, M.D., M.P.H., and Arthur Agatston, M.D., both at the University of Miami; Ron Blankstein, M.D., at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston; and Dan O'Leary at Carney Hospital in Dorchester, Mass.

Kidney Disease - The Hidden Cause of Chronic Resistant Hypertension (High Blood Pressure).

The kidneys are the key organs that regulate systemic blood pressure.  They are the bean-shaped organs at the back of the abdominal cavity located below the lower margin of the rib cage and the upper limit of the pelvic cavity.  The two kidneys regulate blood volume, excrete acidic wastes, metabolize drugs, balance electrolytes, and produce hormones.  Yes, the kidneys do a lot more than make urine.  In Chinese medicine it is even believed that the force of the kidneys control the bones as well as fertility.  In this article I will focus on how renal disease can cause or provoke intractable high blood pressure.
Hypertension accelerates renal insufficiency.  The opposite is also true.  In physiology it is always thought that diseased kidneys need high blood pressure to maintain tissue perfusion.  This simply means that for the rest of the body tissues to keep on receiving nutrients and oxygen through the blood the kidneys have to raise blood pressure.  This is a natural survival mechanism which is incompatible with optimum health.
The renal vasculature is a low pressure bed.  In other words the kidneys are very sensitive to changes in blood pressure and tend to react with renal artery spasms (sclerosis) raising blood pressure through the renin-angiotensin-aldolsterone mechanism.  Don't let this throw you.   I will explain it.
Renin is the hormone that is secreted by the juxtaglomerular cells in response to decreased blood volume, low potassium, low adrenaline, or decreased renal perfusion pressure.  Renin then converts a 10-amino acid protein (packaged in the liver) called angiotensinogen to 8-amino acid polypeptide called angiotensin I. Angiotensin I is still inactive but is activated in the lungs by angiotensin converting enzymes (ACE) to the active angiotension II.  Angiotensin II is a potent vasoconstrictor.  At the same time renin also stimulates the suprarenal glands (the adrenals) to secrete a hormone called aldosterone which in turn stimulate the kidney nephrons to reabsorb salt and water to expand blood volume.  All in an attempt to raise blood pressure.
Now apart from atherosclerosis and blood viscosity the greatest cause of essential hypertension is glomerulo-sclerosis.  The glomerulus are the filtration apparatus of the kidneys.  Glomerulo-sclerosis is a fancy way of saying that the glomerulus are hardened with debris, fibrin clots (fibrosis), and acidic waste clogging the filters.  As a result the pressure builds up.  The inflow is now more than the out-flow.  The tubules or nephrons are also hardened at the same time.  We call this nephrosclerosis.  Diabetes can also accelerate this process as in diabetic nephropathy.
Please note that before hypertension is even diagnosed half of the kidneys are gone.  If your hypertension is accompanied by leg swelling, tiredness, and puffy eyes in the absence of heart failure your kidneys must have been sick.  The sad part is that renal function tests like blood urea nitrogen and serum creatinine may still be normal at this point.
To avoid end-stage renal failure and attendant hypertension an ounce of prevention is always better than a pound of cure.  Stop all foods that hurt the kidneys like junk, fragmented, and devitalized foods.  All fried stuff, processed foods, drugs like asprin, too much refined sugar, heavy metals (lead and cadmium), heavy animal proteins, coffee, and anti-hypertensives (especially the diuretics).
To restore the kidney back to normal before it is too late you must do some debridement with enzyme blend containing proteolytic enzymes like nattokinase and serrapeptase, kidney friendly herbs like milk thistle, uva ursi, parsley, corn silk, and buchu.  Raw fruits and vegetables also help to restore renal vigor and function without harmful prescription drugs.  To get rid of heavy metals you do chelation with EDTA, malic acid, vitamin C, N-acetyl Cysteine, Magnesium, Vitamin B6, CoQ10, and Zinc.

Limiting Carbs, Not Calories, Reduces Liver Fat Faster, Researchers Find...

ScienceDaily (Apr. 19, 2011) — Curbing carbohydrates is more effective than cutting calories for individuals who want to quickly reduce the amount of fat in their liver, report UT Southwestern Medical Center researchers.
"What this study tells us is that if your doctor says that you need to reduce the amount of fat in your liver, you can do something within a month," said Dr. Jeffrey Browning, assistant professor of internal medicine at UT Southwestern and the study's lead author.
The results, available online and in an upcoming issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, could have implications for treating numerous diseases including diabetes, insulin resistance, and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, or NAFLD.  The disease, characterized by high levels of triglycerides in the liver, affects as many as one-third of American adults.  It can lead to liver inflammation, cirrhosis, and liver cancer.
For the study researchers assigned 18 participants with NAFLD to eat either a low-carbohydrate or a low-calorie diet for 14 days.
The participants assigned to the low-carb diet limited their carbohydrate intake to less than 20 grams a day -- the equivalent of a small banana or a half-cup of egg noodles -- for the first seven days.  For the final seven days they switched to frozen meals prepared by UT Southwestern's Clinical and Translational Research Center (CTRC) kitchen that matched their individual food preferences, carbohydrate intake, and energy needs.
Those assigned to the low-calorie diet continued their regular diet and kept a food diary for the four days preceding the study. The CTRC kitchen then used these individual records to prepare all meals during the 14-day study.  Researchers limited the total number of calories to roughly 1,200 a day for the female participants and 1,500 a day for the males.
After two weeks researchers used advanced imaging techniques to analyze the amount of liver fat in each individual.  They found that the study participants on the low-carb diet lost more liver fat.
Although the study was not designed to determine which diet was more effective for losing weight both the low-calorie dieters and the low-carbohydrate dieters lost an average of 10 pounds.
Dr. Browning cautioned that the findings do not explain why participants on the low-carb diet saw a greater reduction in liver fat and that they should not be extrapolated beyond the two-week period of study.
"This is not a long-term study, and I don't think that low-carb diets are fundamentally better than low-fat ones," he said.  "Our approach is likely to be only of short-term benefit because at some point the benefits of weight loss alone trounce any benefits derived from manipulating dietary macronutrients such as calories and carbohydrates.
"Weight loss, regardless of the mechanism, is currently the most effective way to reduce liver fat."
Other UT Southwestern researchers involved in the study were Dr. Shawn Burgess, senior author and assistant professor of pharmacology in the Advanced Imaging Research Center (AIRC); Dr. Jonathan Baker, assistant professor of pathology; Dr. Thomas Rogers, former professor of pathology; Jeannie Davis, clinical research coordinator in the AIRC; and Dr. Santhosh Satapati, postdoctoral researcher in the AIRC.
The National Institutes of Health supported the study.
