Last month, there was a media blitz that took a study on the effects of vitamin C and E taken together, and the news outlets misrepresented the information to suggest that these nutrients were practically worthless. The study when you read it, did nothing to suggest that, in fact just the opposite. There is a campaign going on to down play the power of supplementation, because it is not controlled by the pharmaceutical companies. People are taking supplements more than ever before and are getting results. In general, natural supplements have positive effects and almost never, negative side effects. Which would you prefer to have, side benefits or side effects? Below are some recent articles that show amazing results from foods and supplements and a description of how deception can and is being done in media campaigns around the country.

Unraveling the lies about the antioxidant study on vitamins E and C...
A new study published in the August 13, 2007 issue of the Archives of Internal Medicine found that vitamins E and C, when taken together, result in a significant reduction in the risk of strokes (31 percent) and heart attacks (22 percent). The study followed 8,171 women who were instructed to take relatively small amounts of these vitamins for more than nine years (600 IU of vitamin E, 500mg of vitamin C and 50mg of beta carotene were taken every other day -- a very small dose according to most modern nutritionists). Despite these encouraging findings about the positive impact of antioxidants on health, nearly all the headlines in the mainstream media today are proclaiming vitamins E and C to be useless. In classic doublespeak, one press release blares, "Vitamin C and Other Antioxidant Vitamins Provide No Protection from Cardiovascular Events." This particular distortion comes from the drug-touting Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH), an affiliate of Harvard Medical School. BWH goes on to state, "researchers... have found that there is no evidence of benefit or risk from vitamins C, E or beta-carotene on cardiovascular events for women at a high risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD)."

Pomegranate extracts may inhibit prostate cancer growth - study...
31/08/2007 - Ellagitannins from pomegranate accumulate in the prostate and may be behind the reported benefits of the fruit, suggests a new animal study from the US. The study, published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, also reports that the growth of prostate cancer cells was significantly inhibited by the pomegranate ellagitannins and their metabolites, highlighting the potential of the extracts against the disease. "We have shown that pomegranate ellagitannins metabolites are concentrated to a high degree in mouse prostate tissues," wrote the authors, led by Navindra Seeram."The current study contributes to the increasing body of evidence demonstrating the prostate cancer chemopreventive potential of pomegranate ellagitannins."

Omega-3 supplements rapidly eliminate ADD, ADHD and bipolar disorder in children...
Researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital have reported that omega-3 fatty acid is highly effective in treating children with ADD, ADHD and bipolar disorder. The study was reported in the journal European Neuropsychopharmacology in February 2007."Results from this prospective, open study of monotherapy with omega-3 fatty acids in the over-the-counter product OmegaBrite suggest that manic symptoms can be rapidly reduced in youths with BPD with a safe and well-tolerated nutritional supplement," wrote lead researcher Dr. Janet Wozniak. The high-EPA supplement of Omega-3 fatty acids, called OmegaBrite, was tested for effectiveness and safety on 20 boys and girls with bipolar disorder, ages 6 to 17 years old, over an eight-week period. Half of the participants experienced a rapid 30 percent reduction in symptoms with no side effects.

Pectin triggers self-destruction of prostate cancer cells...
The August, 2007 issue of the journal Glycobiology published the discovery of scientists at the University of Georgia’s Complex Carbohydrate Research Center that treatment with pectin causes the self-destruction of cultured prostate cancer cells. Pectin, a type of fiber which occurs in fruits and vegetables, is one of the most complex molecules known, and can bind to several cell sites to elicit different cellular responses simultaneously. Previous research in rats and tissue cultures treated with pectin has found a protective effect against lung and colon tumors, as well as reduced metastasis.
Professor of biochemistry and molecular biology Debra Mohnen and her associates at the University of Georgia and the VA Medical Center in Augusta exposed androgen-responsive and androgen- independent human prostate cancer cells to commercially available pectin powder. The induction of cellular self-destruction known as apoptosis was approximately 40-fold greater in cultures treated with fractionated pectin powder compared with non-treated cells.
Androgen-independent cells cannot be combated with hormone therapy and are therefore difficult to treat, yet both androgen-responsive and androgen-independent cells were found to have undergone apoptosis following treatment with pectin.
The research team found that heat treatment increased pectin’s apoptotic activity, suggesting a way to improve its cancer-fighting ability. They are currently seeking to identify the smallest structure within pectin that elicits apoptosis in order to develop pectin-based nutraceuticals or drugs.
The study is the first to demonstrate an apoptotic effect of pectin in prostate cancer cells and contributes to the understanding of the anticancer property of pectin found in previous research. “What this paper shows is that if you take human prostate cancer cells and add pectin, you can induce programmed cell death,” Dr Mohnen stated. “If you do the same with noncancerous cells, cell death doesn’t occur.”
“Even though we hear constantly that we’re supposed to eat lots of fruits and vegetables, it wasn’t until we started working on these studies that it finally hit home how really important that was,” she added. “By simply increasing your intake of fruits of vegetables, you’re going to get a lot of pectin and you’re going to get all of the other beneficial phytochemicals at the same time.”

Lipoic Acid, As An Anti-Aging Compound ...
05-18-07
PORTLAND, Ore., May 17 (AScribe Newswire) -- Researchers said today they have identified the mechanism of action of lipoic acid, a remarkable compound that in animal experiments appears to slow down the process of aging, improve blood flow, enhance immune function and perform many other functions. The findings, discussed at the "Diet and Optimum Health" conference sponsored by the Linus Pauling Institute at Oregon State University, shed light on how this micronutrient might perform such a wide range of beneficial functions. "The evidence suggests that lipoic acid is actually a low-level stressor that turns on the basic cellular defenses of the body, including some of those that naturally decline with age," said Tory Hagen, an LPI researcher and associate professor of biochemistry and biophysics at OSU. "In particular, it tends to restore levels of glutathione, a protective antioxidant and detoxification compound, to those of a young animal. It also acts as a strong anti-inflammatory agent, which is relevant to many degenerative diseases." Researchers at LPI are studying vitamins, dietary approaches and micronutrients that may be implicated in the aging or degenerative disease process, and say that lipoic acid appears to be one of those with the most compelling promise. It's normally found at low levels in green leafy vegetables, but can also be taken as a supplement. According to Hagen, research on the natural processes of aging, and steps that could slow it or improve health until near the end of life, are of growing importance. "We're coming into the middle of an aging epidemic in the country," he said. "In a short time more than 70 million Americans will be over 65. This is partly because of the Baby Boom, but also people are living longer, being saved with antibiotics and other medical treatments. In any case, it will be an unprecedented number of elderly people in this nation." The goal of LPI research, Hagen said, is to address issues of "healthspan," not just lifespan - meaning the ability to live a long life with comparatively good health and vigor, free of degenerative disease, until very near death. The best mechanisms to accomplish that, scientists say, have everything to do with diet, exercise, healthy lifestyle habits and micronutrient intake. At the moment, Hagen said, that's not the way things appear to be headed - diabetes is skyrocketing, about 50 percent of people over 65 have high blood pressure, heart disease often leads to permanent disability, and almost half of the elderly people in America have malnutrition that is easily preventable. No single intervention can address all of these issues, Hagen said, but one that scientists keep coming back to is lipoic acid. "Our studies have shown that mice supplemented with lipoic acid have a cognitive ability, behavior, and genetic expression of almost 100 detoxification and antioxidant genes that are comparable to that of young animals," Hagen said. "They aren't just living longer, they are living better - and that's the goal we're after." What the OSU researchers now believe is that the role of lipoic acid is not so much a direct one to benefit cells, but rather an indirect aid that "kick starts" declining function in cells and helps them recover the functions that came more easily and naturally in young animals. In various effects, lipoic acid appears to help restore a cellular "signaling" process that tends to break down in older blood vessels. It reduces mitochondrial decay in cells, which is closely linked to the symptoms of aging. With age, glutathione levels naturally decline, making older animals more susceptible to both free radicals and other environmental toxins - but lipoic acid can restore glutathione function to near normal. And the expression and function of other genes seems to come back to life. "We never really expected such a surprising range of benefits from one compound," Hagen said. "This is really unprecedented, and we're pretty excited about it." Many other presentations have been made at this conference on the role of diet, lifestyle and micronutrients in health and degenerative disease, including cancer, heart disease, neurological diseases and aging. The conference is organized every two years by OSU's Linus Pauling Institute, and attracts leading experts from around the world in these research fields.

YOU CAN DO THINGS TO PREVENT AND EVEN REVERSE CANCER...
If you're not doing things to prevent and or reverse the potential for developing cancer, why aren't you. There is plenty of scientific evidence that it can and is being done. Here are a few things I do and so can you.

Want to avoid breast cancer? Get outdoors, say scientists...
Almost 30,000 cases of breast and colon cancer a year could be prevented by Britons spending more time in the sun to boost vitamin D levels, say researchers.
A new study claims vitamin D "deficiency" may be to blame for 600,000 cancer cases worldwide each year, particularly in northern European countries where sun exposure levels are relatively low.

Green tea extract may boost cancer-fighting enzymes...
NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Healthy subjects who received daily caffeine-free green tea extract capsules had an increased production of detoxification enzymes, which may provide some cancer-fighting benefits, study findings show. "Concentrated green tea extract could be beneficial to those who are deficient in the detoxification enzyme and shouldn't be harmful for those who have adequate detoxification enzyme," lead investigator Dr. H.-H. Sherry Chow, of the University of Arizona, Tucson, told Reuters Health.

Dr. Rath’s Scientific Discovery in Cancer...
Dr. Rath identified a common pathomechanism of all cancers, which is the degradation of the surrounding connective tissue, as a precondition for cancer metastasis. He suggested that the amino acid lysine and vitamin C could effectively control this process.
Cancer develops when cells in one part of the body begin to grow out of control. Normal body cells grow, divide, and die in a systematic way. During the early years of a person’s life, normal cells divide more rapidly until the person becomes an adult. After that, cells in most parts of the body divide only to replace worn out or dying cells and to repair injuries. In the case of cancer cells, the genetic program that regulates their growth cycle is interrupted, causing the cells to become immortal and constantly divide. Cancer cell growth never stops, and it results in the formation of a tumor mass.To stop cancer metastasis, the activity of MMPs must be inhibited. Dr. Rath and his team of researchers at the Dr. Rath Research Institute have identified a specific combination of nutrients that can inhibit the activity of MMPs and stop the spread of cancer cells. Further research has led to the development of a nutrient combination, including vitamin C, the amino acids L-lysine and L-proline and a green tea extract known as Epigallocatechin Gallate (EGCG), that works synergistically to stop the spread of cancer cells through connective tissue.

Nutrition in the news...

US slipping in life expectancy rankings...
WASHINGTON - Americans are living longer than ever, but not as long as people in 41 other countries. For decades, the United States has been slipping in international rankings of life expectancy, as other countries improve health care, nutrition and lifestyles.
Countries that surpass the U.S. include Japan and most of Europe, as well as Jordan, Guam and the Cayman Islands.
"Something's wrong here when one of the richest countries in the world, the one that spends the most on health care, is not able to keep up with other countries," said Dr. Christopher Murray, head of the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington.

Healthy Lifestyle Key To Cancer Prevention...
THURSDAY, August 16 (HealthDay News) -- While the number of deaths from cancer have been declining, many malignancies could be prevented by exercising, eating right, maintaining a healthy weight and not smoking, a new federal report finds. We tried to think of what would have the biggest impact on reducing cancer mortality," she said. "If you consider that 15 to 20 percent of cancer deaths are related to obesity and another 30 percent of cancer deaths are due to tobacco use, that's 50 percent of all people with cancer."
Healthy Diet Guards Against Return of Colon Cancer...
TUESDAY, Aug. 14 (HealthDay News) -- Colon cancer patients who eat a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, poultry and fish can significantly lower the risk of their cancer returning, new research suggests.
Dietary carbs linked to vision loss...
NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - The carbohydrates present in a diet can influence the risk of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), the most common cause of vision loss in older adults, according to a report in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Regular consumption of a diet with a high-glycemic index - a diet containing carbs that quickly raise blood sugar levels -- significantly increased the risk of AMD relative to regular consumption of a diet with a low-glycemic index.

Low-Carb Diets Combat Metabolic Syndrome ...
FRIDAY, July 20 (HealthDay News) -- A low-carbohydrate diet helps people with a condition called metabolic syndrome, a collection of serious risk factors found in some obese individuals. Eating a low-carb diet improves the hormonal signaling involved in obesity and improves the sense of fullness, allowing weight loss, according to study leader Matthew R. Hayes, a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Pennsylvania.

And writing in the journal Circulation: Journal of the American Heart Association, lead author Ramachandran Vasan, from Boston University School of Medicine, states that it made no difference if the drinks were low-calorie or regular."We were struck by the fact that it didn't matter whether it was a diet or regular soda that participants consumed, the association with increased risk was present," said Vasan. "In those who drink one or more soft drinks daily, there was an association of an increased risk of developing the metabolic syndrome."

Broccoli, cauliflower and tomato sause great for prostate cancer prevention...
Eating the right diet can have profound effects on reducing your chances of chronic disease. While cutting out as much wheat and sugar as you can is the most effective way to improve overall health, eating more foods like the ones listed below, especially cruciferous vegetables and red colored foods, can make major improvements in your health.

Broccoli and cauliflower reduce aggressive prostate cancer risk...
A study reported in the August 1, 2007 issue of the Journal of the National Cancer Institute concluded that men who consume more cruciferous vegetables, particularly broccoli and cauliflower, have a lower risk of aggressive prostate cancer. The cruciferous family of vegetables, which also includes cabbage, kale, and Brussels sprouts, has been associated in previous research with protection from colon, breast, prostate, thyroid, cervical, and other cancers, as well as with slower disease progression.
For the current study, Victoria Kirsh, PhD, of Cancer Care Ontario in Toronto and colleagues utilized data from 29,361 men participating in the Prostate, Lung, Colorectal and Ovarian Cancer Screening Trial. Over the 4.2 year average follow-up period, 1,338 men were diagnosed with prostate cancer, including 520 with aggressive disease. Dietary questionnaires completed by the participants were analyzed for the association of fruits and vegetables with prostate cancer risk.
While total fruit and vegetable intake was not found to be related to prostate cancer risk, higher intake of dark green as well as cruciferous vegetables was found to be associated with a lower risk of the disease, particularly that which was aggressive and had spread beyond the prostate. Broccoli and cauliflower had especially strong protective associations against aggressive and extraprostatic disease. Men whose intake of broccoli was greatest, at more than one serving per week, had a 45 percent lower risk of extraprostatic disease cancer than men whose intake was least, at less than once per month. Cauliflower was associated with an even greater benefit, with a 52 percent reduction in risk experienced by men who consumed the vegetable more than once per week. The gluocinsolate-derived compounds contained in cruciferous vegetables modify cancer risk by protecting cells from DNA damage, inducing apoptosis, influencing genetic expression, and inhibiting prostate cancer cell proliferation.
“Aggressive prostate cancer is biologically virulent and associated with poor prognosis. Therefore, if the association that we observed is ultimately found to be causal, a possible means to reduce the burden of this disease may be primary prevention through increased consumption of broccoli, cauliflower, and possibly spinach,” the authors conclude.
Prostate cancer
Besides laboratory testing, physical examination, and investigative procedures to rule out the presence of prostate cancer (PC) and other diseases, an action plan to prevent their development should be considered.
A dietary history of significant lycopene and/or strawberry consumption correlated with a lower risk of aggressive and extra-prostatic PC. The lycopene source that was found to be most significant in most epidemiologic studies was the tomato, in the form of tomato sauce, stewed tomatoes, and pizza. In one large-scale study involving 812 new cases of PC over the years 1986-1992 with matched controls, of the 46 vegetables and fruits or related products significantly associated with lower PC risk, three of the four identified were related to lycopenes--tomato sauce, tomatoes, and pizza. In this study, the combined intake of tomatoes, tomato sauce, tomato juice, and pizza (accounting for 82% of lycopene intake) was associated with a reduced risk of PC for consumption frequency greater than 10 versus less than 1.5 servings a week. Lycopene intake was also associated with a 53% reduced risk for advanced PC (Stages III and IV). The other nonlycopene product identified with significantly lower PC risk was strawberries.
The largest relevant dietary study, a prospective study in male health professionals, found that consumption of 2-4 servings of tomato sauce a week was associated with about a 35% risk reduction of total PC and a 50% reduction of advanced (extra-prostatic) PC. Tomato sauce was by far the strongest predictor of plasma lycopene levels in this study. These associations persisted in analyses controlling for fruit consumption, vegetable consumption, and olive oil use.

Nutrients in the news and product updates...
Dear readers...
If you had been on my e-mail blog for the last few years, you would have been educated on why 1 billion people around the world are now estimated to be vitamin D3 deficient. Getting adequate sunshine without sunscreen helps a lot, but now there is evidence that supplementation is a better way to assure that you are protected. I am so convinced of the benefits of supplementation that all my multivitamins have at least 800 IU's to 1200 IU's of vitamin D3. Most multi's contain 200 IU's to 400 IU's of D2, a much inferior form. Here is some new information on why you need vitamin D3.
Calls get louder to raise vitamin D levels...
19/07/2007 - Recommended daily intakes of vitamin D should be quadrupled to 800 International Units, says a leading US expert from Boston University School of Medicine.
Dr. Michael Holick states that current recommendations of 200 IU per day for children and adults up to 50 years of age for vitamin D need to be increased to 800 - 1000 IU vitamin D3.

One Billion People Don't Get Enough Vitamin D...
THURSDAY, July 19 (HealthDay News) -- Vitamin D deficiency is a common problem that can lead to a number of serious health conditions, but it can be prevented, says one expert.
People get vitamin D from sun exposure, diet and supplements. Yet vitamin D deficiency is all too common.

Vitamin D and Calcium Combat Cancer...
Large amounts of these nutrients reduced the all-cancer risk in postmenopausal women by 60% By Hyla Cass, M.D.
We have long known that vitamin D and calcium are essential for our health and that proper calcium metabolism depends critically on adequate amounts of vitamin D, a steroid hormone popularly known as the “sunshine vitamin.” Both of these nutrients play important roles in the prevention and treatment of various diseases. A new study published by researchers at Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska, however, has startled the medical world by providing unusually strong evidence of an anticancer effect for the vitamin D and calcium pair.
Dr. Cedric Garland, a prominent vitamin D researcher at UC San Diego (who was not involved in the study), said, The findings . . . are a breakthrough of great medical and public health importance. No other method to prevent cancer has been identified that has such a powerful impact.

Breakthrough Updates You Need to Know on Vitamin D...
The compound we call vitamin D can no longer properly be considered a vitamin. For most mammals, it is not in any sense even a nutrient. Nevertheless, vitamin D resembles true vitamins inasmuch as humans -- who are cut off from the critical solar ultraviolet wavelengths by reason of latitude, clothing, or shelter -- depend on an external source of the substance, just as they do for the true essential nutrients.

EMPOWERING PEOPLE TO BECOME & STAY ...WELL BEINGS...
I am sure I am going to offend a few people with this post, but I have to voice my opinion here.
I look at modern medicine today and the pharmaceutical companies and I ask myself, is it all about the money?
Baby Boomers are aging and they are being targeted by ads on TV for drugs for this and drugs for that. Are the drug companies suppose to drum up business by scaring everyone to death about how they might have this condition, or they may have that disease, so they go see there doctor in a panic and get on the latest and greatest new wonder drug. And then there are those cute acronyms too, RA, COPD, RLS, HD, CVD, etc - etc...
I also see ads for what they are calling, I am sure for marketing purposes, Power Chairs. Rather than encouraging people to keep moving and teaching them that if you don't use it, you will lose it. Instead they are telling you how powerful you will become with the use of their POWER chairs. They are free, they will even bill medicare for you... Wow, how gracious of them. Isn't there more power in being able to walk around on your own, as long as you can?
What about all these ads for the Freedom you will now have with your new freedom oxygen tank. Also, to add insult to injury, there is now a TV show dedicated to teaching you how to LIVE with diabetes called the D-Life. How about teaching people how to reverse type 2 diabetes, instead of telling them how to just manage it, and then bombard them with blood sugar testing meters, which are just about all the ads I see when I have caught that program. Want to bet who sponsors that show?
Do I think these tools are helpful, yes, but they are not the goal.
I think there is more power and freedom in prevention and in educating people about the many ways they can take charge of their own health, and in caring enough to fight back the aging process, yourself.
It's starts with a concept... Optimal Health does not come from minimal efforts, bad diets, or supplements that are designed to just keep you from getting Rickets and Scurvy.
And it won't come from watching TV programs on how to manage or maintain diabetes, while watching from the comfort and freedom of your power chair and freedom oxygen tank.
Fight back people and take pride in good health!

Daily allowances for vitamins need to be changed, study says...
13/07/2007 - New recommended daily allowances for micronutrients need to be set if European regulation on the maximum levels of vitamins and minerals is to be successful, a study has said. "RDAs define the minimum required amount to maintain health by avoiding a specific deficiency state, below which risks will increase," the authors said. The researchers said that RDAs should take into account the vitamins ability to ward off more serious conditions, rather than being based simply on day-to-day nutritional needs. The authors wrote: "However,….we should envisage the development of a different physiological perspective in which the issue of optimum dosages not in relation to specific acute deficiency states but to long term (chronic) disease states, can be addressed."They add that current scientific models used to determine these levels also need to be updated, and note that little has changed with RDA levels in 50 years.

Packing a Punch Vitamin D May Play a Role in Preventing Cancer, Heart Disease and Other Ailments...
We've known for decades what vitamin D can do for your bones. Kids who don't get enough vitamin D get rickets. Adults who are deficient in D also can develop brittle, misshapen bones.
In this job, vitamin D is cast in a supporting role; it's main function is ensuring calcium is absorbed into the bones and muscles. But it turns out we might have been selling D short.
An avalanche of research over the past few years suggests vitamin D might play a role in preventing other diseases, independent of calcium:
- A Harvard study of more than 30,000 women published in May found premenopausal women with the highest vitamin D intake had 35 percent less breast cancer than those getting the least vitamin D.
- Another Harvard study in 2006 found white people with the highest levels of vitamin D had a 62 percent lower risk of developing multiple sclerosis.
- In a study published earlier this month, researchers in Nebraska found women who got 1,100 international units of vitamin D every day lowered their risk of any cancer by 77 percent. This study was small - just 1,179 women - but it was the most rigorous yet to examine vitamin D's impact on health. Other studies point to a protective effect against cancers of the colon, prostate, ovaries, pancreas and kidney, as well as heart disease, Alzheimer's, diabetes, arthritis and other illnesses.

Nutrition in the news
Cinnamon and Chromium Reduce Blood Pressure...
Diet, Exercise, Cinnamon, and Chromium all support lower insulin levels and blood pressure.
Some foods that are known to promote insulin resistance—notably fats and sugars—are also associated with an increased risk for hypertension. Underscoring this relationship between glucose metabolism and blood pressure is the fact that certain anti diabetic drugs, which suppress insulin resistance, also lower blood pressure. The same is true of the best “drug” of all, physical exercise. Thankfully, some nutritional supplements are also beneficial in this regard, and leading the way are cinnamon and chromium.

Controlling Blood Sugar with Cinnamon...
Water-soluble cinnamon extract lowers glucose levels and improves lipid profile in diabetic mice.
If you attend any parties this holiday season, you’ll probably encounter some of the traditional delicacies we all enjoy so much: spice cake or pumpkin pie, baked apples or mulled cider—perhaps even one of those fruitcakes that get sent as gifts but are never actually eaten. And what do these goodies have in common besides being trotted out at this time of year? They usually contain cinnamon in one form or another. So unless you regularly eat cinnamon buns, cinnamon toast, or some other cinnamon-containing product, chances are you’ll be getting more cinnamon during the holidays than you usually do.
That’s a good thing, because a particular component of cinnamon helps keep blood sugar under control, and during the holiday season, we tend to eat more than the usual amounts of sugary and fatty foods, especially at parties. Controlling blood sugar is important all year round, though, so it would be good to have cinnamon on a regular basis. In the course of one year, the average person in our society consumes about 150 pounds of sugar, or about half a cup daily (teenage boys are the champions in this department, downing about twice as much sugar as any other age or gender group).

Fight aging and go back in time...
Fight the Effects of Aging with Alpha Lipoic Acid
By Dr. Allen S. Josephs
Co-Founder & Chairman, Vitacost.com 05/31/2007
There was a recent conference, entitled "Diet and Optimum Health," sponsored by the Linus Pauling Institute that took place at Oregon State University. One of the key nutrients discussed was alpha lipoic acid (ALA). In animal and human studies, this compound has been shown to slow the aging process, improve blood flow, enhance immune function and promote healthy blood sugar and many other functions. Dr. Tory Hagen, a researcher at Linus Pauling Institute, noted, "the evidence suggests that lipoic acid is actually a low-level stressor that turns on the basic cellular defenses of the body, including many of those that naturally decline with age." He further added, "In particular, it tends to restore levels of glutathione, a protective antioxidant and detoxification compound to those of a young animal.Researchers at Oregon State University now believe that ALA does not work directly on cells but rather indirectly, "kick starting" declining cellular function. Hagen adds, "Our studies have shown that mice supplemented with lipoic acid have a cognitive ability, behavior and genetic expression of almost 100% detoxification and antioxidant genes that are comparable to that of young animals. They aren't just living longer, they're living better – and that's the goal we're after." I couldn't agree more with Dr. Hagen. I've been a big advocate for ALA for many years. I routinely recommend it, along acetyl-L-carnitine (ALC), to my patients with poor peripheral nerve function. Patients will frequently present with pain and numbness in their feet which, in many cases, can be improved with these important nutrients. There was a study published several years ago where aged rats were given a combination of ALC and ALA1. Not only did these rats perform in a more youthful fashion, when their brains were autopsied, it actually showed regeneration of brain neurons and tissue. Whether this happens in a similar fashion in humans has never been firmly established, although ALC and ALA have been put into the category of anti-aging nutrients. ALC works by providing fuel for the cell via the Kreb's cycle and promotes healthy mitochondrial function in a manner similar but complimentary to coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10). ALA, CoQ10 and ALC combined are the three most powerful anti-aging nutrients you can take that promote healthy energy, cellular health, cardiovascular health, healthy blood sugar and optimal neurological health.

Have you had your phytos today?
Once upon a time it was thought that fats, proteins, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals were all the nutrients necessary for growth and health. Now we know there's another group of nutrients necessary for optimal health - phytonutrients. Despite its high tech ring, "phytonutrient" (from the Greek phyton for "plant") simply means a "nutrient from a plant."
While there are many phytos that have been identified, there are probably thousands more that remain to be discovered. The best known phytos are carotenoids, flavonoids, and isoflavones. Carotenoids include yellow, orange, and red pigment in fruits and vegetables. Dark, green, leafy vegetables are rich in the carotenoid, beta carotene, but the usual yellow color is masked by the chloraphyll, the green pigment in the vegetables. Flavonoids are reddish pigments, found in red grape skins and citrus fruits, and isoflavones can be found in peanuts, lentils, soy, and other legumes. You're familiar with vitamins, now we have "phytomins," which are less familiar, but equally important, health-promoting substances in food.
1. Phytos protect the body and fight disease.
2. Phytos fight cancer.
3. Phytos help hearts.

A nutraceutical approach to preventing migraines...
Feverfew for the prevention of migraines...
It's not at all unusual for people interested in using herbs to replace over the counter medications with simple herbal counterparts. What has been unusual enough to generate headlines, though, is the conventional medical community's research and acceptance of a traditional European folk remedy, Feverfew, in preventing migraine headaches.
Migraines are believed to be caused by an upset in serotonin metabolism, causing spasms of intracranial blood vessels, which then causes dilation of extracranial blood vessels.
In the 1970s an English research group sought volunteers already using Feverfew before beginning a study of its efficacy. Their advertisement in a London newspaper brought more than 20,000 responses. Since then, several well-documented double-blind, placebo studies in England confirm its value. An interesting one reported in The Lancet (July 23, 1988; 2(8604):189-192) followed 72 volunteers. After a one-month trial using only a placebo, half of the group received either one capsule of dried Feverfew leaves a day (or a matching placebo) for four months. Neither the group nor the researchers knew which group was receiving the Feverfew. The group kept diary cards of their migraine frequency and severity. After four months, the groups switched medications, and the trial continued for an additional four months. 60 patients completed the study, and full information was available on all but one. The study found Feverfew to be associated with reducing the number and severity of attacks (including vomiting), with the researchers concluding that there had been a significant improvement when the patients were taking Feverfew. There were no serious side effects. Its primary actions are anti-inflammatory, bitter, emmenagogue and a vasodilator. Aside from migraine relief, long-term users report relief from depression, nausea and inflammatory arthritic pain. The Eclectic physicians of the 19th century called it one of the pleasantest of the tonics, influencing the whole intestinal tract, increasing the appetite, improving digestion, promoting secretion, with a decided action on kidney and skin.
Pharmacologists say it is likely that the sesquiterpene lactones in Feverfew inhibit prostaglandin and histamine released during the inflammatory process, preventing the vascular spasms that cause migraines. It appears to regulate the serotonin mechanism. To attain the maximum benefit from Feverfew, it should be taken daily as a preventive along with magnesium.
Magnesium for migraine relief...
About 18 million women and some 5 million men in the United States suffer from migraine headaches. Only about a third are satisfied with their treatments, which can range from over-the-counter headache remedies to serotonin receptor antagonists, beta-blockers and calcium antagonists. Many of these prescription drugs come with an array of side effects. But what if a mineral could make a difference for migraine sufferers?
Magnesium's role in the origins of migraine headaches has been demonstrated in a number of studies. It seems magnesium concentration affects serotonin receptors, nitric oxide synthesis and release, as well as other migraine-related receptors and neurotransmitters. In fact, evidence suggests some 50 percent of patients have low levels of ionized magnesium (IMg++) during an acute migraine attack. Alexander Mauskop, M.D., and colleagues from the State University of New York Health Science Center at Brooklyn set out to evaluate intravenous magnesium to treat headaches, to correlate clinical responses to baseline serum magnesium levels, and to see if patients with certain headache types had low serum ionized magnesium vs. total serum magnesium. Traditional blood magnesium tests measure total magnesium, but Mauskop believes the ionized fraction (IMg++) is more relevant to the migraine problem, so he developed a test to measure IMg++ and used it in the study. The researchers recruited 40 people (11 men and 29 women) who suffered from any type of moderate or severe headaches. Of these patients, 36 had some diagnosed form of migraine. Patients with renal, cardiac, diabetic or other medical problems were excluded. Age-matched healthy volunteers served as controls. When subjects had an acute headache, researchers measured their ionized magnesium, then gave them a 1 g intravenous infusion of magnesium. The results of this study were impressive. Only eight patients had no response to the magnesium, while 32 of the 40 patients (80 percent) had complete elimination of their headache pain within 15 minutes. However, as with other anti-migraine maneuvers, symptoms returned within hours in 14 of the 32 patients (43 percent). Still, with just this one magnesium treatment, 18 of the 32 subjects were free of symptoms for 24 hours or more. (One patient's remission lasted more than five months.) Almost all patients reported a flushed feeling after the magnesium injection, but that was the only side effect. Interestingly, researchers found those without pain for 24 hours or more after treatment were mainly the patients whose initial ionized magnesium levels were low, below 0.55 mmol/L. In all, there was a correlation between the clinical response to intravenous magnesium and low serum magnesium levels in 75 percent of the patients.
The conclusions from this study:
A substantial proportion of migraine patients probably have low IMg++. For those patients with low magnesium levels, acute migraine pain can likely be stopped with a single intravenous magnesium treatment.
The researchers summarize:
"Magnesium deficiency could be involved in both the vascular and neurological aspects (e.g., migraine aura, pain, nausea, etc.) of the development of migraine. Our results support a role for magnesium deficiency in the development of headache."
Introducing: MIGRAINE SUPPORT
This formula is designed to reduce the occurrence and severity of migraine headaches.
Several clinical trials have shown that Feverfew reduces the frequency and severity of migraine headaches when taken in small amounts daily. It reduces symptoms of pain, nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light and noise. It may be more effective in patients with more frequent migraine attacks. Magnesium compounds seem to reduce the frequency and severity of migraine headaches as well. Niacin has vaso-dilatory properties. White Willow has aspirin-like properties and therefore can provide pain relief from cluster headaches. Capsacin, the active ingredient in Cayenne, depletes the chemical messengers that send signals through the pain-sensing peripheral nerves, thus deadening the sensation of pain even when its cause remains present.
Try a natural approach to preventing migraines...

Why taking charge of your own health makes sense to me...
When Doctors Strike, Fewer People Die...
In 1973 doctors in Israel staged a month-long strike and during that month, mortality fell by 50 percent. A couple of years later, a two-month work stoppage by doctors in the Columbian capital of Bogotá led to a 35-percent decline in deaths. And during a “work slowdown” by doctors in Los Angeles protesting against the sharp increase in premiums for liability insurance, the number of deaths fell by 18 percent. Once doctors were back at work full time, mortality immediately jumped back to the previous level. Every year, 1.2 million Britons are hospitalized as a result of improper medical care. In the United States – where 40,000 people are shot to death each year – the chance of getting “killed” by a doctor is three times greater than being killed by a gun. And every year significantly more people die from an infection sustained while in the hospital than as a result of traffic accidents. mercola.com

Great nutritional insurance for under a dollar a day...
Announcing 2 new Orthomolecular Formulations...
The 2 new products are called Men's Basic + and Women's Basic +, and were designed to cover the MDR's (Minimum Daily Requirements) of A-Zinc, in a lower cost product compared to my MULTI MAX. I also gave them a gender formulation distinction making each one unique.
These formulations have the addition of 2 powerful nutrients and an increase in 1 ingredient over the RDA's.
I added 50 mgs a day of Alpha Lipoic Acid, & 2, 000 mgs of Spirulina and increased Vitamin D3 levels to 1,000 iu's.
The goal here was to keep the cost low and affordable for anyone, but give it a unique nutritional punch for the money.
ALA was added as the great multiplier to increase the action of all the oil & water soluble antioxidants like vitamins A, C, E, Zinc & Selenium and to increase their longevity cycle in the body over a 24 hour period of time, so they are more effective. I also added a powerful food base called Spirulina with it's exceptional phytonutrients, and with all the new research on the immune benefits and cancer prevention aspects of D3, an inexpensive ingredient, I made sure it was increased to the new levels now recommended by leading scientists around the world.
These 3 nutrients make these 2 products an exceptional value in the market place. Here is why...
Alpha Lipoic Acid:
Alpha Lipoic Acid can almost be termed the perfect antioxidant. Not only is it capable of reviving itself to fight again after sacrificing itself on the battle field as it destroys free radicals, but it enables Vitamins C & E to reconstitute themselves too. Some studies have in fact shown that when taking Alpha Lipoic Acid, it is possible to reduce the amounts of the other vitamins one needs to take to protect health. It is noted for its ability to both lower cholesterol, and regulate blood sugar levels. Alpha Lipoic Acid is hepato-protective - it protects the liver from damage caused by the many chemicals we are exposed to on a daily basis. In Europe, ALA has been used for 30 years as a medically approved treatment for diabetes. Studies done at the University of Pennsylvania in 1970 shows that it increases the rate at which the body converts sugar into energy, and also slows the damage caused in diabetics such as cataracts and neuropathy. Speaking of cataract tissue, a 1995 study by Dr. Lester Packer found ALA extremely protective against cataracts in diabetics: being both water and fat soluble it is able to penetrate deep into the tissue of the lens in its mission to destroy free radicals.
Spirulina:
Spirulina is believed by anthropologists and biologists to be the oldest living plant on the planet. This "old faithful" has provided complete nutrition, unmatched in value, for over 3.5 million years. Only in the past 75 years have we become familiar with Spirulina, a sleeping powder keg of "green power" that has the potential to become the prime choice for a world super food of the future. Spirulina has been blessed by nature with a huge arsenal of valuable nutrients. Of special interest is the phycocyanin, a blue pigment naturally present in large amounts. Results of a 1986 study presented at the International Association for Dental Research General Session concluded that phycocyanin was unique because of its cytostatic (suppressing formation of new cancer cell colonies) and cytotoxic (that destroy existing colonies of cancer cells) abilities.
Spirulina is also naturally "pumped" with vitamins, especially the carotenoids like beta-carotene, essential fatty acids (EFA's), the important fatty acid gamma linolenic acid (GLA), digestive enzymes, minerals and the richest plant source of vitamin B12. Spirulina is the "must have" green food- a complete protein with all eight essential amino acids present. Its 60% protein content is four times greater than beef (18%)! In our society, where the concept of complete protein is meat and dairy, it is very reassuring to know that greens like Spirulina can provide all the high quality protein and other nutrients needed.
Vitamin D3 - The sunshine vitamin:
While the diet in America is one of the highest in the world when it comes to calcium intake, via cheese, yogurt, and dairy in general, we still have health problems associated with the lack of calcium utilization. This is mainly due to a lack of magnesium and adequate levels of vitamin D3 or sunshine exposure. The following study sums up my feelings best about the potential power of D3 supplementation.
"Exciting new research conducted at the Creighton University School of Medicine in Nebraska has revealed that supplementing with vitamin D and calcium can reduce your risk of cancer by an astonishing 77 percent. This includes breast cancer, colon cancer, skin cancer and other forms of cancer. This research provides strong new evidence that vitamin D is the single most effective medicine against cancer, far outpacing the benefits of any cancer drug known to modern science. The study involved 1,179 healthy women from rural Nebraska. One group of women was given calcium (around 1500 mg daily) and vitamin D (1100 IU daily) while another group was given placebo. Over four years, the group receiving the calcium and vitamin D supplements showed a 60 percent decrease in cancers. Considering just the last three years of the study reveals an impressive 77 percent reduction in cancer due to supplementation."
