Vitamin K reduces calcification of arteries by 37 percent; blood thinner medications cause calcification...
A study has found vitamin K not only blocks new arterial calcium buildup but can also reduce existing levels of calcification by 37 percent. Researchers at Maastricht University published their findings in the April 1st issue of Blood, the journal of the American Society of Hematology. "Given that arterial calcifications are predictive of cardiovascular events, regression of arterial calcification may help reduce the risk of death in people with chronic kidney disease and coronary artery disease," wrote lead author Leon Schurgers.

Folic acid seen to reduce stroke risk...
6/4/2007 - Folic acid supplementation is best known as a means of protecting unborn children against birth defects, but research suggests that it could also be beneficial to adults and significantly reduce their risk of suffering a stroke.

COMMENT: Folic Acid is part of the b-complex group and is in most quality multiples in ample amounts. Vitamin K2 though is not in most multi's, a cheaper vitamin K is found and not in sufficient amounts. Hardening of the arteries involves calcium deposits, as does cataracts, arthritis etc. If you understand how significant removing calcium from soft tissues is to your health and longevity, then you might want to do as I do and take 200 mcgs daily.

Important health news this week...

An Urgent Warning to Parents About the Dangers of Soy Milk for Babies...
Two vegan parents have been convicted of murder and given life sentences in prison for starving their 6-week-old baby to death.
Though the parents may have thought they were doing the right thing, they were feeding their child a completely inadequate combination of soy milk and apple juice along with a small, but insufficient, amount of breast milk.
Now, soy experts are again calling for clear and proper warning labels on all soy milk products -- indicating that it should NEVER be used in place of infant formula -- following this and several other babies' hospitalizations or deaths under similar circumstances.

New research shows vitamin D slashes risk of cancers by 77 percent; cancer industry refuses to support cancer prevention...

Friday, June 08, 2007
by: Mike Adams
http://www.newstarget.com/

Exciting new research conducted at the Creighton University School of Medicine in Nebraska has revealed that supplementing with vitamin D and calcium can reduce your risk of cancer by an astonishing 77 percent. This includes breast cancer, colon cancer, skin cancer and other forms of cancer. This research provides strong new evidence that vitamin D is the single most effective medicine against cancer, far outpacing the benefits of any cancer drug known to modern science. The study involved 1,179 healthy women from rural Nebraska. One group of women was given calcium (around 1500 mg daily) and vitamin D (1100 IU daily) while another group was given placebo. Over four year, the group receiving the calcium and vitamin D supplements showed a 60 percent decrease in cancers. Considering just the last three years of the study reveals an impressive 77 percent reduction in cancer due to supplementation.
(The full press release of this study is included below. It provides more details about the findings.) Note that these astonishing effects were achieved on what many nutritionists consider to be a low dose of vitamin D. Exposure to sunlight, which creates even more vitamin D in the body, was not tested or considered, and the quality of the calcium supplements was likely not as high as it could have been (it was probably calcium carbonate and not high-grade calcium malate, aspartate or similar forms). What does all this mean? It means that if you take high-quality calcium supplements and get lots of natural sunlight exposure or take premium vitamin D supplements (such as those made from fish oil), you could easily have a greater reduction than the 77 percent reduction recorded in this study.

American Cancer Society opposes vitamin D...
This research on vitamin D is such good news that the American Cancer Society, of course, had to say something against it. An ACS spokesperson, Marji McCullough, strategic director of nutritional epidemiology for the American Cancer Society, flatly stated that nobody should take supplements to prevent cancer. If it seems surprising to you that the American Cancer Society -- which claims to be against cancer -- would dissuade people from taking supplements that slash their cancer risk by 77 percent, then you don't know much about the ACS. In my opinion, the ACS is an organization that actually prevents prevention and openly supports the continuation of cancer as a way to boost its power and profits. The ACS is the wealthiest non-profit in America and has very close ties to pharmaceutical companies, mammography equipment companies and other corporations that profit from cancer. Notice the name, too: It isn't the American Anti-Cancer Society, it's the American Cancer Society!

What they really stand for is right in the name!
Click here to read more about the ACS and its financial ties to chemical companies, pharmaceutical companies and radiology equipment manufacturers. The cancer industry is a multi-billion dollar industry, and I've written extensively about the criminal organizations that protect and promote the industry. Just about everything the public is told about cancer by these cancer institutions is a lie. Those "race for the cure" cancer walks are a complete scam (they really aren't searching for any way to prevent cancer or cure cancer, they're only searching for new patented drugs to profit from cancer). This research on vitamin D is a huge threat to the cancer industry profit mongers because it reveals a way to prevent cancer for free -- by seeking natural sunlight exposure and letting your skin manufacture your own powerful anti-cancer medicine (vitamin D). The idea that the cancer industry could lose 80% of its patients due to widespread education about vitamin D and sunlight scares the living daylights out of the cancer industry. Billions of dollars in cancer profits are at stake here, so the pro-cancer groups have to do everything they can to discredit vitamin D by creating doubt and confusion. The degree of dishonesty at work here is almost unbelievable to those who don't really know what's happening in the cancer industry.

10 QUESTIONS TO CONDIDER ABOUT THE CANCER INDUSTRY...
#1: Why does the cancer industry refuse to educate people about cancer prevention?
#2: If people keep donating money for the "search" for a cancer cure, why won't drug companies pledge to "open source" their patents on cancer drugs to benefit the people whose donations funded them in the first place? In other words, why do people donate money for cancer research but then get charged for cancer drugs?
#3: Why does the entire cancer industry so strongly dissuade people from using sunlight exposure to dramatically reduce their cancer risk? (Hint: Follow the money to the sunscreen industry...)
#4: Why have all the really good cancer supplements, clinics and naturopaths been banned, arrested or run out of the country? (Look up the FDA's oppression of Lane Labs over MGN-3 for a fascinating review of this...)
#5: The U.S. has poured billions of dollars into the cancer industry over the last three decades. Cancer cures were promised in the 1970's. Why are cancer rates still essentially the same today as they were in the 1970's?
#6: Why does the cancer industry continue to use chemotherapy, radiation and other toxic procedures to "kill tumors" when the latest science clearly shows that cancer tumors are only the symptoms, not the cause, of cancer? Chemotherapy destroys immune function and causes permanent damage to the heart, brain and liver...
#7: The World Health Organization says that 70% of all cancers are easily preventable through dietary and lifestyle changes. This latest research shows that sunlight and low-cost calcium supplements can slash cancer risk by 77% in women. Why won't conventional medicine embrace this low-cost, safe and highly effective method for preventing cancer?
#8: The cancer industry routinely attacks anti-cancer herbs, superfoods and supplements.
Why is the cancer industry opposed to anti-cancer nutrition? Why does it believe that only man, not nature, can manufacture anti-cancer medicines?
#9: Dark skin pigmentation blocks ultraviolet radiation, meaning that people with black skin need far more time under the sun to generate the same amount of vitamin D as someone with white skin. Not surprisingly, black women suffer extremely high rates of breast cancer while black men show similarly high levels of prostate cancer. The white-dominated medical industry pretends to be "mystified" by all this. Why won't conventional medicine simple tell black people the truth about vitamin D, skin pigmentation and cancer? Why do oncologists try to keep black people ignorant about their vitamin D deficiencies?
#10: Why is it illegal for nutritional supplement manufacturers to tell the truth about the anti-cancer effects of their products? Broccoli, garlic, onions and sprouts all have powerful anti-cancer effects, as do dozens of rainforest herbs (Cat's Claw, for example), Chinese herbs and Western herbs. But the FDA threatens and censors any company that dares to mention cancer prevention on its supplement products. Why is the FDA enforcing a policy of nutritional ignorance with U.S. consumers? Why does the federal government want people to remain ignorant of methods for preventing or treating cancer? You probably already know the answer to all these questions, because the answer is the same for each one:

Corporate profits...
Cancer is hugely profitable to treat. Substantially preventing cancer would result in a loss of billions of dollars in profits for the oncologists, drug companies, hospitals and clinics that currently prey upon the finances of cancer victims. The cancer industry is operated like a criminal racket, using false information, intimidation, political pressure and propaganda to protect its power base and keep its corporations profitable. And that, my friends, is exactly why the industry is against the use of sunlight to prevent cancer. Free medicine from the sky? The very thought of it makes the cancer industry cringe. Sunlight doesn't even need a prescription, you see, and it can't be patented, either.

Insulin Levels May Dictate Success With a Diet...
TUESDAY, May 15 (HealthDay News) -- A diet slightly higher in fat and lower in processed carbohydrates -- such as refined cereals, white bread and white sugar -- may help people who secrete insulin at higher levels lose more weight than a low-fat, higher-carb plan. That's the conclusion of a new study that may help to explain why a person's rate of insulin production -- and not dedication to a diet -- can determine their weight loss success.

The Sinatra Solution, Metabolic Cardiology...
For many years, I have been teaching patients, and doctors, about the life-giving benefits of Coenzyme Q10 and L-carnitine. Looking back, using them in my practice represented our first steps into the world of metabolic cardiology-the treatment of heart disease on a cellular level by improving individual cell function and energy production. The effect of these nutrients on cellular energy has now been experienced by thousands of heart patients, who improved the quality of their lives by the simple supplementation with these "Twin Pillars" of cardiac health.
Now a new nutrient, D-ribose, has arrived on the scene, heralding a second generation of metabolic cardiology. In combination, these nutrients provide the metabolic support hearts and other body tissues need to generate and maintain the energy required to promote health and vitality. I've watched nutritional interventions improve and literally save lives when traditional medicine just wasn't enough. Now, I employ them as my first line approach whenever I can.

Become younger and have more energy...

Fight the Effects of Aging with Alpha Lipoic Acid...
By Dr. Allen S. Josephs
Co-Founder & Chairman, Vitacost.com

05/31/2007 There was a recent conference, entitled "Diet and Optimum Health," sponsored by the Linus Pauling Institute that took place at Oregon State University. One of the key nutrients discussed was alpha lipoic acid (ALA). In animal and human studies, this compound has been shown to slow the aging process, improve blood flow, enhance immune function and promote healthy blood sugar and many other functions. Dr. Tory Hagen, a researcher at Linus Pauling Institute, noted, "the evidence suggests that lipoic acid is actually a low-level stressor that turns on the basic cellular defenses of the body, including many of those that naturally decline with age." He further added, "In particular, it tends to restore levels of glutathione, a protective antioxidant and detoxification compound to those of a young animal. It also acts as a strong anti-inflammatory agent, which is relevant to many degenerative diseases. "Researchers at Oregon State University now believe that ALA does not work directly on cells but rather indirectly, "kick starting" declining cellular function. Hagen adds, "Our studies have shown that mice supplemented with lipoic acid have a cognitive ability, behavior and genetic expression of almost 100% detoxification and antioxidant genes that are comparable to that of young animals. They aren't just living longer, they're living better - and that's the goal we're after." I couldn't agree more with Dr. Hagen. I've been a big advocate for ALA for many years. I routinely recommend it, along acetyl-L-carnitine (ALC), to my patients with poor peripheral nerve function. Patients will frequently present with pain and numbness in their feet which, in many cases, can be improved with these important nutrients. Unfortunately, modern medicine offers no alternative to actually help restore peripheral nerve function as these nutrients have been demonstrated to do in animal and human studies. There was a study published several years ago where aged rats were given a combination of ALC and ALA1. Not only did these rats perform in a more youthful fashion, when their brains were autopsied, it actually showed regeneration of brain neurons and tissue. Whether this happens in a similar fashion in humans has never been firmly established, although ALC and ALA have been put into the category of anti-aging nutrients. ALC works by providing fuel for the cell via the Kreb's cycle and promotes healthy mitochondrial function in a manner similar but complimentary to coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10). ALA, CoQ10 and ALC combined are the three most powerful anti-aging nutrients you can take that promote healthy energy, cellular health, cardiovascular health, healthy blood sugar and optimal neurological health.

Comment: I have been taking ALA, CoQ10, and ALC for over 2 years after reading this article from biochemist Bruce Ames from U C Berkeley.
http://www.cwiechert.com/Antiaging.html

Recently I have formulated over 5 products that include ALA, ALC, and some that include CoQ10 as well. These formulations are powerful and you feel a big difference when you take them.
Here are some examples:

Please don't be afraid of the sun... Autism & vitamin D a possible connection...

This is an exerp from an article by John Cannell, MD, Atascadero, CA 93422, that I receive via e-mail on a regular basis... He runs the Vitamin D Council and the Vitamin D Newsletter. He is on the cutting edge of Vitamin D research. I have been Blogging for over 2 years on the epidemic of low vitamin D levels and it's effect on immune function, cancer, heart disease etc.

Now there may be evidence that hiding from the sun or using sunblocks could be involved in the epidemic of Autism since 1999. Read on and make your own judgments...

cw

The role of sunlight...
Vitamin D intake—are children and pregnant women getting as much as they used to?
No, because sun exposure is much less common today. Furthermore, perhaps because the term, vitamin D, contains the word "vitamin," many people mistakenly assume it is a vitamin, though it is not. Vitamin D is the only known precursor for a steroid hormone system that, until recent sun‑avoidance, always began in the skin and not the mouth. Before the sun‑scare, 90% of human vitamin D stores came from skin production, not diet. Large populations of pregnant women and autistic children ingesting small amounts orally, instead of generating large amounts through the skin, are novel to human brain development. Obviously, if people are going to put it in their mouths, rather than make it in their skin, oral intake must be adequate enough to make up for decreased skin production. However, the skin's production of vitamin D is rapid and robust, easily exceeding usual dietary sources by a factor of 10. For example, when fair‑skinned adults sunbathe in the summer (one, full‑body, exposure to ultraviolet light, enough to turn the skin slightly pink) they make about 20,000 units of vitamin D in 20 minutes. A pregnant woman would have to drink 200 glasses of milk or take 50 prenatal multivitamins to do the same. An autistic boy who plays inside the house, instead of outside, would have to take several thousand units of vitamin D to make up for what his skin would have produced had he played outside that day.

When did medical organizations first tell us to avoid the sun?
In 1989, around the time autism began to rise, the American Medical Association's (AMA) Council on Scientific Affairs first warned about the dangers of sun exposure, advising mothers to "keep infants out of the sun as much as possible." In 1999, when autism rates really exploded, the American Academy of Pediatrics went further, advising mothers always to keep infants out of direct sunlight, use sun‑protective clothes and sunblock, and make sure children's activities minimize sunlight exposure. Quite inexplicably, they said there was "no evidence" such changes would affect vitamin D levels. By 2002, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reported such efforts were quite successful: "protection from sun exposure is reported for a high proportion of children."

Did authorities recommend compensatory vitamin D intakes?
Medical organizations did not plan for the vitamin D deficiency such sun avoidance would predictably induce. For example, when the AMA warned about the dangers of sunlight, they did not even mention that sunlight triggers the formation of vitamin D. Furthermore, medical recommendations for infants, children, young women, and pregnant women, did not change during the decades of sun avoidance: 200 units/day for all infants, children, pregnant women, and young adults—regardless of weight. That is, they did, and still do, recommend the same 200 daily units for a 5‑pound infant as they do for a 200‑pound pregnant woman. In fact, in 2003, the American Academy of Pediatrics cut their long‑standing 400 units/day recommendation in half—apparently to comply with government recommendations—and did so despite warnings from a prominent University of Wisconsin professor of pediatrics, Dr. Frank Greer, and despite their own advice four years earlier that infants and children should avoid sunlight.

Have vitamin D levels fallen as autism has increased?
Yes they have, although no linear studies of vitamin D levels over the last 20 years exist. That is, we don't know how effective sun avoidance campaigns have been in lowering vitamin D levels. However, if one assumes that some Americans do follow their government's and physician's advice, then at least some must have had declining vitamin D levels over the last 20 years—unless they took enough supplemental vitamin D to make up for lack of sun exposure. Unfortunately, few take the thousands of daily units needed to do that. What we do know is that vitamin D deficiency, like autism, is now an epidemic.

What Is The Vitamin D Theory of Autism?
In addition to the current epidemic of vitamin D deficiency, say another epidemic—an epidemic of autism—was upon our children? What if the autism epidemic began at the same time the epidemic of vitamin D deficiency began? What if both epidemics had worsened in unison? What if one theory explained all the known facts about autism? What if both epidemics had the same root cause: sun avoidance? What if both were iatrogenic, that is, medical advice to avoid the sun had caused both epidemics? Be warned, what follows is not light reading—autism is not a light disease.

If you or anyone you know has Autism, read and forward this information as soon as posible.

Protect yourself from Heart Failure...

Breaking News on Supplements & Nutrition - North America...
Pine bark extract shows promise against heart failure

Pine bark extract shows promise against heart failure...
By Stephen Daniells

5/18/2007- Extracts from French maritime pine bark may protect against heart failure, if a new study with mice can be translated into humans. The results of the new study, published on-line in the journal Cardiovascular Toxicology, add to a growing body of research reporting potential health benefits of the pine bark extract, Pycnogenol. "We propose that a therapeutic effect of Pycnogenol may help to limit cardiac remodeling in patients predisposed to congestive heart failure - such as in the aged," wrote lead author Sherma Zibadi from the University of Arizona. Hypertension, defined as when the sufferer has blood pressure higher than 140/90 mmHg, means that the heart is over-worked, resulting in weakening of the heart muscle and increasing of heart chamber volume. This process (known as cardiac remodeling) may eventually cause heart failure when the heart insufficiently supplies the body with oxygenated blood. The researchers used elderly female mice (18 months old) and randomly divided them into four groups: control mice, mice receiving Pycnogenol only (30 mg/kg per day), mice receiving N-nitro-L-arginine-methyl-ester (L-NAME) only (a substance which causes arterial constriction), and mice receiving both Pycnogenol and L-NAME. Two groups of hypertensive mice were assigned to receive either Pycnogenol in drinking water for four weeks or left unsupplemented. After five weeks, the researchers observed that the hearts of the latter control group had significantly increased in size as a result of hypertension. In the French maritime pine bark extract group, hypertension and heart function parameters resembled those found in healthy control mice with healthy blood pressure. "This study provides evidence that oral administration of Pycnogenol reversed cardiovascular remodeling induced by L-NAME by blocking nitric oxide production, which leads to hypertension and finally cardiomyopathy," said co-research Ronald Watson. After studying the heart tissue, the researchers found Pycnogenol supplementation to significantly enhance the connective collagen matrix of cardiac tissue. Whereas the chronic hypertension in mice led to a significant loss of connective collagen fibers, the French maritime pine bark extract was found to significantly increased the collagen presence, resulting in stronger cardiac chambers. "Even so, a more thorough understanding of the underlying mechanisms Pycnogenol modulated is clearly needed," concluded the researchers. "Alternatives such as Pycnogenol are crucial components in the fight against heart disease," said Watson. "The effectiveness of Pycnogenol supplementation is a great option for many people who want an alternative to prescription medications such as beta blockers or ACE inhibitors. This new study shows Pycnogenol administers a therapeutic effect to limit the degenerative process in patients predisposed to congestive heart failure, such as the aged. "Horphag Research, manufacturers of Pycnogenol, supported the study financially. The company has been very active in sponsoring and supporting studies into the potential health benefits of the pine bark extract. The first research was conducted on the ingredient 35 years ago. Victor Ferrari, research chief operating officer and executive vice president of Horphag Research, told NutraIngredients last year that the company ploughs $1.5m - "most of its profits" - into research each year. The product is extracted from the bark of the Maritime pine that grows on the southern coast of France, and is currently used in over 400 dietary supplements, multi-vitamins and health products.

Comment: This is an important study and it only confirms other research as to the great value of this supplement.

Low carb diet - wins...

Comparison of Atkins, Zone, Ornish, and LEARN Diets in Overweight Premenopausal Women...

A new study(1) reports the results of a year-long study of the effects on weight loss among four diets: the Atkins (77 subjects), Zone (79 subjects), Ornish (76 subjects), and LEARN (79 subjects). As you are undoubtedly aware, the Atkins diet is very low in carbohydrates. The Zone diet is low in carbohydrates, the LEARN diet is low in fats and high in carbohydrates, and the Ornish diet is very high in carbohydrates and very low in fats.

The summary of the results reported that “. . . premenopausal overweight and obese women assigned to follow the Atkins diet, which had the lowest carbohydrate intake, lost more weight and experienced more favorable metabolic effects at 12 months than women assigned to follow the Zone, Ornish, or LEARN diets.”
The mean 12-month weight losses were: Atkins, –4.7 kg (95% confidence interval, –6.3 to –3.1 kg); Zone, –1.6 kg (95% confidence interval, –2.8 to –0.4 kg); LEARN, –2.6 kg (–3.8 to –1.3 kg); and Ornish, –2.2 kg (–3.6 to –0.8 kg). The mean weight losses were significantly different between the Atkins and Zone diets, whereas weight losses were not statistically different among the Zone, LEARN, and Ornish groups. Dietary intakes were determined by telephone-administered, 3-day, unannounced, 24-hour dietary recalls. Energy expenditure was estimated by using the “well-established” Stanford 7-day physical activity recall. Hence, results were limited by potential biases in recall of dietary intakes and of physical activity.
It is interesting to note that the diets were all low in fiber. Calculated fiber contents of the diets at 12 months were: Atkins, 15.2 (±2.7); Zone, 16.7 (±9.4); LEARN, 18.3 (±7.8); and Ornish, 19.3 (±9.4). The fiber content of those on the Ornish diet was significantly different from that of those on the Atkins diet.
The Atkins diet was significantly higher in fat (44.3 ± 12.5, up from 36.2 ± 7.8 at baseline) at 12 months than the other diets, while protein content of the Ornish diet (18.3 ± 4.0) was significantly lower than that of the Atkins diet (20.6 ± 5.3). The Atkins diet was also significantly higher in saturated fat content (27.2 ± 13.3, up from 26.5 ± 11.1 at baseline) than the other three diets. Interestingly, the Ornish group was only able to get their saturated fat percentage down from 24.8 ± 10.3 at baseline to 16.9 ± 11.4, although the goal was to reach 10% or less saturated fat. This underscores the difficulties for individuals trying to reduce saturated fat to such a low level.
Insulin and glucose measurements showed that neither the overall trajectory across all time points nor the 12-month differences were significantly different among the groups, either for fasting insulin or fasting glucose. HDL-cholesterol was significantly greater (compared to baseline) at 12 months in the Atkins, Zone, and LEARN diets as compared to the Ornish diet. Diastolic blood pressure was significantly lower (compared to baseline) in the Atkins, Zone, and LEARN diets as compared to the Ornish diet. Systolic blood pressure was significantly lower (compared to baseline) in the Atkins diet as compared to the other three diets.
This study provides clear supporting evidence for the benefits of reducing carbohydrate calories for weight loss (Atkins diet) and also demonstrates favorable changes for those on the Atkins diet in lipid levels and blood pressure.

CANCER STUDIES IN THE NEWS...

The top five cancer-causing foods...
Ever wonder which foods should be strongly avoided by those at high risk for cancer? We can begin identifying cancer-causing foods once we know which ingredients in our food cause cancer. Some of those ingredients are food additives and chemicals used to enhance taste, while others are used strictly for appearance or to increase product shelf life. The key to avoiding cancer-causing foods is knowing which ingredients are carcinogens -- or cancer promoters -- and then reading food labels to permanently avoid consuming those ingredients.

What's this? Drug companies getting into wellness products? I thought they didn't work and just created expensive urine?

COMMENT: For as long as I can remember, the drug companies as well as the AMA, have been telling us via the media that supplements were a waste of your time and your money. Consumers knew better and have been purchasing them anyway. Why, because they work and have few if any side effects. Why are drug companies getting into this market, now? Either they believe that they now work, or they feel that if you are stupid enough to buy them anyway, why not sell them.
Since they now call them Nutritional Science, perhaps they really do work, after all. You be the judge.
If your looking for nutraceuticals that really do what they're designed to do, maybe you should look to a formulator who has been taking and recommending supplements for over 30 years. And yes, I have had expensive urine.

It's spring time, time for a liver cleanse...

The Liver - A Vital Organ
The liver is the largest internal organ in the human body weighing three to four pounds. It is glossy in appearance, and dark red in color from the rich supply of blood flowing through it. Sometimes called the great chemical factory, your liver neutralizes harmful toxins and wastes, stores glycogen (a blood-sugar regulator), amino acids, protein, and fat.
If your liver is not functioning well, a hazardous buildup of toxins may occur.

The liver is a complex, unique organ serving many functions crucial to sustaining life. From circulation to digestion, it is constantly processing blood for use by the rest of the body. In today’s world, our liver, all of our organs, are at great risk of contamination from environmental toxins and over-processed foods infused with many unnatural chemicals.
The liver performs many important functions to keep us healthy. It removes harmful material from the blood; it makes enzymes and bile that help digest food; and it converts food into substances needed for life and growth. From its sheltered position in the abdominal cavity, the liver filters blood and performs many functions vital to health.
Our bodies depend on the liver to regulate, synthesize, store, and secrete important proteins and nutrients.

The Liver Carries On Over 500 Functions Essential For Life, Including:
Filtering blood
Purifying and clearing waste products, toxins, and drugs
Regulating and secreting substances important in maintaining your body’s functions and health
Storing important nutrients such as glycogen (glucose), vitamins, and minerals
Metabolizing fats, proteins, and carbohydrates
Creating bile
Metabolizing hormones, endogenous wastes, and foreign chemicals
Forming urea
Assimilating and storing fat-soluble vitamins
Synthesizing blood proteins

The liver is the most resilient body organ. It is capable of regenerating itself, and is able to recreate lost tissue in order to help maintain its essential functions, even in the face of moderate damage.
When part of the liver is removed, a healthy organ may grow back to its original size. But its capacity to repair itself can be exceeded by repeated or extensive damage. Keeping your liver as healthy and cleansed as possible offers many health advantages.

Why Liver Cleanse?
In our industrialized developed world, we are immersed in a sea of toxic chemicals. The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that half-a-million chemicals are in use today, and over 5,000 new chemicals are introduced yearly. Some researchers believe up to 25 percent of these may be carcinogenic. This is why it is crucial to cleanse your liver of the toxic waste of 21st century living.
“Imagine the situation if your garden hose had marbles in it. Much less water would flow, which in turn would decrease the ability of the hose to squirt out the marbles. With gallstones, much less cholesterol leaves the body, and cholesterol levels may rise.”
“Gallstones, being porous, can pick up all the bacteria, cysts, viruses and parasites that are passing through the liver. In this way ‘nests’ of infection are formed, forever supplying the body with fresh bacteria. No stomach infection such as ulcers or intestinal bloating can be cured permanently without removing these gallstones from the liver.”
If your liver becomes overworked, it can become congested. Toxic compounds and impurities may get trapped in deposits of hardened bile. Pollutants may not be flushed out of the body, and can back up in your blood stream.
A sluggish liver can lead to serious fatigue, weight gain, water retention, and a host of other health woes. Detoxification that targets the liver can help remove these unwanted poisons and enable it to function properly. A healthy liver will increase your energy, improve metabolism, and help you burn excess fat.

Do You Need To Cleanse?
Ailments that indicate you may need a liver cleanse include:
Allergies
PMS
Chemical sensitivities
Constipation
Bloating
Obesity
Low metabolism
Low energy

Start spring right with a good house cleaning.

Introducing... Orthomolecular Formulations...

Introducing...

Orthomolecular Formulations...Over 30 nutraceutical products developed & personally formulated by Christopher Wiechert, C.N.C.

Our products and formulations employ vitamins, minerals, herbs, fatty acids and amino acids to create optimum nutritional content for the body, as well as the right environment and biochemical equilibrium. Like most alternative health techniques, orthomolecular nutrition targets a wide range of health concerns.

The term Orthomolecular Medicine was developed by Linus Pauling, Ph.D., winner of two Nobel prizes, in 1968. It is designed to enable individuals to reach the apex of health and the peak of their performance by utilizing only naturally occurring substances (e.g. vitamins, minerals, enzymes, trace elements, co-enzymes, etc). The proper balance of these substances in the body is the key to reaching physical, mental, and emotional health and stability. Orthomolecular nutrition can be used therapeutically to support disease conditions and more importantly, preventatively to impede the progress of degenerative disease and aging.
Biochemical individuality is a main principle of orthomolecular nutrition. This principle was elucidated by Roger J. Williams, Ph.D. This principle is quite simple: every living organism is unique! Furthermore, each individual requires different relative amounts of nutrients for his or her satisfaction and optimal level of health. The government sets a minimum recommended daily allowance (RDA) which is supposed to be adequate for all individuals. However, many may need to exceed the RDA as well as the recommended 2,000 calorie diet in order to prevent a severe deficiency disease. Thus, RDA values are not perfect guidelines for everyone. Several studies have proven the existence of biochemical individuality.
When all is said and done, however, the main objective of orthomolecular nutrition is to help people reach an optimal level of health.

Are you taking your fish oil?

Fish oils found to enhance overall health

By Dr. Allen S. Josephs
04/20/2007

There have been so many excellent studies recently published, I don't know where to begin. Several of these studies pertain to fish oil, which is the primary focus of this week's newsletter. To give you an idea of the number of published studies, if you search "fish oil" at the National Library of Medicine, over 11,600 studies are available and rapidly climbing. In the March 2007 edition of the journal Atherosclerosis., 81 Japanese men with unhealthy blood sugar levels were randomly assigned to receive 1800 mg daily of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA - an omega-3 essential fatty acid from fish oil) with the other half being a control group. The thickness of the carotid arteries and certain measures of blood flow were measured before and after supplementation. This went on for approximately two years. A total of 60 patients (30 in the EPA group and 30 in the control group) completed the study. Those given the EPA had a statistically significant decrease in the thickness of the carotid arteries along with improvement in blood flow. The authors indicated that this was the first demonstration that administration of purified EPA improves the thickness of carotid arteries along with improving blood flow in patients with unhealthy blood sugar levels.Another study published in the American Journal of Health System Pharmacy March 20071, patients with high triglycerides and poor coronary artery health were given 4 grams a day of a combination of EPA and DHA along with some monounsaturated fatty acids. Those patients with very unhealthy triglyceride levels (above 500 mg/dl) reduced their triglycerides on average 45% and their VLDL cholesterol by more than 50%. VLDL is a bad type of cholesterol and elevated triglycerides can also be deleterious for cardiovascular health. There was another study published on the benefits of EPA in the prestigious journal Lancet March 20072. The study involved over 18,000 patients with unhealthy cholesterol levels. The patients were randomly assigned to receive either 1,800 mg a day of EPA with a statin drug or a statin drug alone. The trial went on for a total of five years. It was found at the end of the study those patients in the EPA group had superior cardiovascular function. Non-fatal coronary events were also significantly reduced in the EPA group. The authors concluded that EPA is a promising supplement for promoting cardiovascular health. There was another study regarding fish oil in a younger population published in the journal Nutrition, April 20073. Sixty four healthy Danish infants received either cow's milk or infant formula alone or with fish oil from nine to twelve months of age. It was found that those infants supplemented with fish oil had improvement in immune function maturation with no apparent reduction in immune activation. There was yet another study on omega-3 fatty acids just published in the April 2007 Journal of NeuroScience4. A group of mice were genetically modified to develop accumulation of amyloid and tau proteins in the brain similar to that seen in people with poor memory. The mice were divided into four groups with one group receiving a typical American diet (with high ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids being 10 to 1). The other three groups were given food with a balanced 1 to 1 omega 6 to omega 3 ratio and two additional groups supplemented with DHA plus long chain omega-6 fatty acids. After three months of feeding, all the DHA supplemented groups were noted to have a lower accumulation of beta amyloid and tau protein. It is felt that these abnormal proteins may contribute to the development of memory loss in later years. Finally, there was another study published regarding omega-3 supplementation in children with learning and behavioral problems. This study was published in the April 2007 edition of the Journal of the Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics5 where 132 children, between the ages of seven to twelve years old, with poor learning, participated in a randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blinded interventional trial. A total of 104 children completed the trial. For the first fifteen weeks of this study, the children were given polyunsaturated fatty acids (omega-3 and omega-6, 3000 mg a day), polyunsaturated fatty acids plus multi-vitamins and minerals or placebo. After fifteen weeks, all groups crossed over to the polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) plus vitamins and mineral supplement. Parents were asked to rate their children's condition after fifteen and thirty weeks. After thirty weeks, parental ratings of behavior improved significantly in nine out of fourteen scales. The lead author of the study, Dr. Sinn, indicated the present study is the largest PUFA trial to date with children falling in the poor learning and focus range. The results support those of other studies that have found improvement in poor developmental health with essential fatty acid supplementation. Unfortunately, the only way to get safe levels of essential omega-3 EPA & DHA fatty acids is through highly purified molecularly distilled pharmaceutical grade supplements. There was a recent study published in the journal Diabetes Care linking pollutants found in fish to insulin resistance and Type II diabetes mellitus6. The study found a link between persistence organic pesticides (POPs) and diabetes with obese patients with low blood levels of POPs having low incidence of diabetes. I was actually disheartened to see recent data on a sampling of wild fish from Alaska dated Jan 2007. It is typically felt that wild caught Alaskan fish have much lower blood levels of dangerous heavy metals, but, unfortunately, most of the fish (salmon, halibut, cod, snapper, Pollock and many others) sampled had high levels of arsenic, cadmium and mercury, just to name a few. These heavy metals are highly toxic, are not easily excreted and tend to build in tissues in the body including the brain, kidneys, etc. generating free radicals and destroying healthy cells. There is an expression called "mad as a hatter." This referred to people who became insane and cognitively impaired from being exposed to high levels of mercury that was used decades ago in the hat industry. It would seem that the safest and most effective way to get these critical essential fatty acids is to take them in supplemental form.

Omega 3's in the news...

Omega-3 Fatty Acid May Thwart Alzheimer's Disease ...
TUESDAY, April 17 (HealthDay News) -- A type of omega-3 fatty acid called docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) may help slow the growth of two kinds of brain lesions associated with Alzheimer's disease, a new study suggests. The researchers at the University of California, Irvine, said their finding suggests that a diet rich in DHA -- found in fish, eggs, organ meats, micro-algae, fortified foods and food supplements -- may help prevent the development of Alzheimer's as people age.

Conventional medicine vs preventative health - Protect your freedom...

Conventional medicine vs. naturopathy: How to fix a leaky roof...

Both the Natural Solutions Foundation (www.HealthFreedomUSA.org) and natural health news site NewsTarget (www.NewsTarget.com) revealed details today of distributed denial-of-service (DDOS) website attacks, database hacking attempts, personal and professional reputation internet smear campaigns and impersonation attempts, among other tactics.
