Are you eating enough fruits & vegies and keeping your insulin levels low?

CDC: Too few eating fruits, vegetables...
By DANIEL YEE, Associated Press Writer Thu Mar 15, 6:22 PM ET

Fewer than a third of American adults eat the amount of fruits and vegetables the government recommends, a trend that's remained steady for more than a decade, health officials said Thursday. That's "well below" the government's goal of getting 75 percent of Americans to eat two servings of fruits and having half of the population consume three servings of vegetables each day by 2010, said Dr. Larry Cohen of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The diet survey, part of a huge federal health survey of every state, is based on responses from 305,000 adults in 2005. It indicates the country is only about halfway toward meeting its healthy eating goal three years from now.
"We're really concerned with the lack of success in meeting these national goals," said Cohen, who works in CDC's nutrition and physical activity division.
Although the rate of fruit and vegetable consumption has remained unchanged since 1994, health officials said the goal is still within reach.
"We have more work to do over the next few years," said spokeswoman Rachel Ciccarone.
Specifically the survey showed that 27 percent of adults ate vegetables three times a day, and about 33 percent ate fruit twice a day. A serving size is a half-cup for most fruits and vegetables, one cup for leafy greens.
Senior citizens were more likely than others to follow Mom's advice to eat more veggies, with slightly more than a third of that group eating three or more servings each day. Younger adults, age 18 to 24, ate the fewest vegetables. Nearly four-fifths of that age category scraped the veggies to the side of their plates — if they had vegetables on the plate at all.
Likewise, seniors also ate the most fruit, with nearly 46 percent eating two or more servings of fruit daily. People age 35 to 44 ate fruit the least, with fewer than 28 percent eating the recommended amount of fruit each day.
The federal agency said it doesn't know why people aren't eating more veggies or fruits. Cohen said future surveys will ask people what other foods they are eating.
Susan Krause, a clinical dietitian at Hackensack University Medical Center in New Jersey, said people are eating more refined sugars or choosing protein instead of fruits and vegetables.
"There's so much information out there and people get very confused. When they're looking at protein, they feel that's the solution when they're not looking at long-term health benefits," she said. "There's so many fabricated foods now and people are looking at convenience."
Not only are fruits and vegetables lower-calorie, they also have minerals and fiber that help guard against chronic diseases and cancer, the CDC says.
The survey relied on people to report what they were eating. Telephone questioners asked how often they consumed fruit juice, fruit and vegetables. Although Hispanics ate the most fruits (37 percent) compared with blacks and whites, they ate the fewest vegetables, (about 20 percent). Whites, in contrast, ate the fewest fruits (31 percent) but the most veggies (28 percent).
Cohen said the CDC has been working on family and community programs to get more people to eat their veggies. The agency is working with the U.S. Department of Agriculture to get more fresh produce into schools.
Krause said health officials should offer people simple options for getting fruits and vegetables in their diets, such as easy recipes in cooking classes and fruit smoothies or shakes in schools.
"If that's a way of getting it in, at least it's in the right direction," she said. "Certainly (whole) fruit is a better choice, but that could be the next alternative."

Comment: The countries that consume the largest amount of fruits and vegetables, have the lowest cancer rates.

Make sure you get 10 servings of fruits and vegies every day...

High Insulin & Glucose Levels - The Cause of Many Diseases...

High levels of insulin and glucose, the result of eating a high refined carbohydrate diet, can result in heart disease, diabetes, hypertension, obesity and cancer. Insulin is produced by the body in response to rising levels of glucose in the blood after a carbohydrate rich meal. The insulin takes the glucose out of the blood and deposits it into glycogen or adipose tissue - usually the latter.Sounds harmless, right? Wrong. The problem is that there are no concentrated sources of glucose in nature. Fruits and vegetables, especially wild ones tend to be low in carbohydrates. All of the concentrated sources of glucose, the so called "complex carbohydrates," are found in foods that have to be cooked and/or processed to become edible. Thus, they are not really natural foods, and our bodies weren't designed to cope with large amounts of glucose contained in them. We only have one hormone, insulin, to lower blood sugar levels but four different hormones that raise it.Hence, today we are paying with the above mentioned diseases. How? Well, since insulin is an anabolic hormone, in large amounts it may encourage tumor cell growth. High levels of insulin directly result in increased blood pressure through various mechanisms such as proliferation of arterial smooth muscle cells, which makes the arteries more rigid. It also activates cholesterol synthesis through its stimulating effect on HMG-CoA reductase, the key enzyme in the cholesterol synthesis pathway. The body produces about 5 times or so more cholesterol than ingested by diet. Thus, if you want your cholesterol levels lowered, avoiding that egg won’t do anything, instead avoid refined carbohydrates. (It’s interesting to note that the most effective cholesterol medications in use today, the statins, work by inhibiting HMG-CoA reductase.) Furthermore, insulin directly shuts off the fat burning pathways in the body, and turns on those pathways responsible for the production of fat and triglycerides. High levels of insulin and glucose also damage arteries, which can initiate plaque formation, and glucose directly binds to LDL molecules, rendering them unrecognizable to the liver and causing them to be attacked by macrophage cells of the immune system, which also initiates a process leading to plaque formation. Finally, chronic high levels of insulin can lead to the desensitization of the insulin receptor - leading to type II diabetes. (As an aside, the reason that diabetics have such a high incidence of secondary coronary and vascular disease is because of the chronic high levels of glucose in their blood and the relatively high levels of insulin some of them receive through injections to control their blood sugar level.)

Epidemic Deficiency of Vitamin E...
If people had to rely on the news media for accurate health information, they might be influenced into making some very poor decisions. For instance, new studies about vitamin E are published every week. The findings from virtually all of these studies, however, remain buried in scientific journals—that is, unless there is an unfavorable outcome. Since vitamin E is a popular supplement, the media turns negative results into headline news stories, thus leading Americans to believe that they do not need supplemental vitamin E.

GOOD ADVISE FOR HELPING THE HEART

Proven steps to protect your heart ...

Forget latest quick fixes and go for tried and true measures, experts say Forbes...
Updated: 4:16 p.m. PT March 7, 2007

Sure, many of us can't resist glazed doughnuts and french fries and don't remember what the inside of a gym looks like. And yes, we're constantly stressed out about work and could stand to lose 10 pounds.
But a heart attack? They happen to other people — not you.
Even if the worst should occur, doctors can use drugs to decrease the damage to your heart, or perform angioplasty or bypass surgery to fix the problem. Right?
Not always. Up to 25 percent of people who die of sudden cardiac death had no prior symptoms or warnings such as chest pain.
"You can't just rely on the thought that, 'Oh, well, if I have a heart attack the doctors will be there to save me and put me on medications,'" says Dr. Erin Michos, a cardiology fellow at Johns Hopkins Medicine. "Some people don't make it to the hospital. They die at home. Prevention needs to begin early in life."
Heart attacks strike when one or more of the heart's arteries are blocked, severely reducing or stopping blood from reaching part of the heart muscle. They're usually preceded by the buildup inside the artery walls of fatty deposits or plaque, which can rupture, causing a blood clot to form and block the artery. When the blood supply is cut off for more than a few minutes it can be deadly.
Coronary heart disease remains the nation's single leading cause of death, and it's estimated that 1.2 million Americans will have a first or recurrent coronary attack this year, killing 452,000 of them, according to the American Heart Association.
Preventative measuresIf those statistics sound frightening, take heart.
Cardiologists, doctors, nutritionists and other experts say you have the power to cut your risk of having a heart attack.
Instead of looking for the latest quick fix, however, focus your preventive efforts on what's already been proven.
For starters, that means changing your diet. But, as registered dietitian and American Heart Association spokeswoman Ronni Litz Julien points out, today there are lots more do's than don'ts.
She tells clients to get a tablespoon of olive oil a day, either with sautéed vegetables or a salad, and to frequently eat low-mercury fish, which is high in omega-3 fatty acids and can reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.
A few eggs a week are no longer forbidden. Neither is meat, if you're eating lean, 4-ounce to 6-ounce cuts. The same goes for nuts, such as walnuts, almonds, cashews and peanuts, as long as you're not demolishing a Costco-size container in two days.
A little portion control will go a long way toward helping you keep your weight in check too. Litz Julien recommends that couples eating out order separate salads or shrimp cocktails and split an entrée. When cooking, don't just dump half a bag of rice into the pot — measure it. Aim to always leave something on the plate.
"If you can leave a few bites, you've created a barrier between you and the food," she says. "You're still satiated but you're not so completely full that you have to unbutton your pants."
Consistently getting a good night's rest is another simple thing you can do for your heart.
Recent studies have shown a connection between not getting enough sleep or irregular sleep patterns and heart disease, says cardiologist Dr. Thomas Lee, editor of the Harvard Health Letter, a journal which covers and analyzes health care issues. By cheating yourself of sleep, you're throwing off your biological clock, causing adrenaline to surge and raising blood pressure, a major risk factor for heart attacks.
"We need to recognize that sleep is important, not a sign of weakness," Lee says. He suggests structuring your day so that you get enough sleep, which also can minimize stress in your life, another risk factor.
Down with your digitsAn additional key to heart attack prevention is knowing your numbers, including blood pressure, cholesterol and body mass index.
Risk factors such as age (coronary heart disease increases as we grow older), gender (before 50 heart disease is more common in men than women, but women's risk increases after menopause) and heredity (you're at an increased risk if your father or a brother had a heart attack before 55 or your mom or a sister had a heart attack before 65) can't be changed, according to research from Johns Hopkins Medicine.
But once you know your numbers, you can do something about them.
High-tech helpThe Texas-based U.S. Preventive Medicine is one new company trying to encourage preventive screenings across America.
It's working with hospitals and physician groups to create centers where people can go for tests, health risk assessments, counseling and intervention, says medical director Dr. Boyd Lyles. On a daily basis Web sites, such as Everydayhealth.com, also can help you track your results and goals, and show you how to reach them.
Following through will take time and commitment, but it can be done.
Over the years, Litz Julien, for instance, has made exercise as an important part of the day as her shower.
"It's truly a matter of if you want it," she says. "You've got to want it."

Antioxidant Vitamins and Selenium in the news. Let the truth be told...
By Allen S. Josephs, M.D., Vitacost, President

03/02/2007 You are probably aware of a study that came out earlier this week in JAMA from Denmark indicating that in a meta-analysis of 68 randomized trials involving over 200,000 people, vitamins A, E and beta-carotene may increase mortality risk by up to 16%. The study indicated vitamin C did not have any clear effect on mortality and that the anti-oxidant mineral selenium was actually associated with a 9% decrease in all cause mortality. I read the full text of this study just published and must say that it is quite a mish-mosh. The authors of the study combined a large series of different studies using all different levels of nutrients, quality of nutrients (synthetic versus natural), and so on. The methodology in this meta-analysis I feel was terribly flawed. Dr. Stampfer, a professor of nutrition and epidemiology at the Harvard School of Public Health told the Associated Press that the studies reviewed were too different to be able to pool them together. I couldn't more strongly agree with Dr. Stampfer's impression 1.The authors of this paper further seemed to stack the deck against vitamins. They had reviewed a total of 815 different trials but included only 68 of them in their final analysis. There were over 400 trials that they reviewed in which the mortality rate was zero in both the vitamin group and the control group. They decided to exclude these over 400 trials because there was zero mortality. If indeed they were trying to determine is there was truly some increased risk of mortality associated with vitamins, why not include the over 400 trials that showed no mortality whatsoever. Furthermore within the 68 trials they decided whether they were low bias or high bias trials based on the way each study was conducted. When they looked at all 68 trials together they reported no significant effect on mortality. However when they selected out the 47 trials that they considered low bias (involving over 180,000 participants) that is when they saw some increased risk of mortality with some of the vitamins. As I read through this meta-analysis I could not help but feel that there was tremendous bias in putting together this paper. It is important to point out Denmark is in the European Union and their doctors and government tend to be very anti-vitamins and biased against supplements based on their absurd regulations. And of course the main stream press picked up on this study making the sweeping comment that vitamins will kill you. The press is not interested in reporting the fair and balanced facts but rather sensational headlines. I do not believe that anyone in the vitamin/nutrition business is advocating that you take only vitamin A, vitamin E and beta carotene as your nutritional supplements. Some of the best nutrients available were not analyzed in this paper such as alpha lipoic acid, coq10, omega-3 essential fatty acids, ginkgo, green tea, grape seed just to name a few. At the present time there are many cancer centers throughout the United States including the National Cancer Institute that are studying nutrients like soy, green tea and curcumin for their health benefits. A great example of media bias is a recent 2007 study they ignored entirely that was conducted in San Francisco, CA regarding vitamin D. This study is available on the National Library of Medicine which is sponsored by the National Institutes of Health. I have provided the full abstract below...
2: "Solar ultraviolet B (UVB) irradiance and/or vitamin D have been found inversely correlated with incidence, mortality, and/or survival rates for breast, colorectal, ovarian, and prostate cancer and Hodgkin's and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Evidence is emerging that more than 17 different types of cancer are likely to be vitamin D-sensitive. A recent meta-analysis concluded that 1,000 IU of oral vitamin D per day is associated with a 50% reduction in colorectal cancer incidence. Using this value, as well as the findings in a multifactorial ecologic study of cancer mortality rates in the US, estimates for reductions in risk of vitamin D-sensitive cancer mortality rates were made for 1,000 IU/day. These estimates, along with annual average serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels, were used to estimate the reduction in cancer mortality rates in several Western European and North American countries that would result from intake of 1,000 IU/day of vitamin D. It was estimated that reductions could be 7% for males and 9% for females in the US and 14% for males and 20% for females in Western European countries below 59 degrees. It is proposed that increased fortification of food and increased availability of supplements could help increase vitamin D intake and could augment small increases in production of vitamin D from solar UVB irradiance. Providing 1,000 IU of vitamin D per day for all adult Americans would cost about $1 billion; the expected benefits for cancer would be in the range of $16-25 billion in addition to other health benefits of vitamin D. "There are those of you who may say that I too cannot be objective since I am deeply involved with this vitamin company. My interest with vitacost/NSI developed over time as I came to understand and appreciate the incredible benefits of proper nutritional supplementation. Obviously this negative vitamin study is likely being hailed in the halls of the pharmaceutical companies who spent over $800 million the last seven years lobbying congress and the FDA not to mention tens of billions on marketing. They see the vitamin industry as a clear and present danger to their over $200 billion per year monopoly that is bankrupting Americans and our government. The fact that it is well known that over 100,000 people die every year in this country from the proper use and administration of drugs does seem to get much press. Oh well, I've known about that double standard for a long time.

NO DEATHS FROM VITAMINS: Poison Control Statistics Prove Supplements’ Safety.
(OMNS Feb 23, 2007) There was not even one death caused by vitamins in 2005, according to the most recent statistics available from the US National Poisoning and Exposure Database. The 129-page annual report of the American Association of Poison Control Centers published in the journal Clinical Toxicology (1) shows zero deaths from multiple vitamins; zero deaths from any of the B vitamins; zero deaths from vitamins A, C, D, or E; and zero deaths from any other vitamin. Over half of the U.S. population takes daily vitamin supplements. Even if each of those people took only one single tablet per day, that makes 145,000,000 individual doses per day, for a total of over 53 billion doses annually. Since many persons take additional vitamins, the numbers are considerably higher, and the safety of vitamins all the more remarkable.

The Miracle of Vitamin D

Life Extension Update Exclusive

Vitamin D supplements reduce falls in older adults...

A report published in the February, 2007 issue of the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society concluded that supplementing with vitamin D can help prevent nursing home falls in older men and women. Falls occur in approximately half of the residents of nursing homes each year, and render the patients more susceptible to further injury.
Kerry Broe and Douglas Kiel of the Institute for Aging Research at Hebrew SeniorLife in Boston and colleagues at Boston Medical Center and Harvard analyzed data from a randomized, controlled clinical trial of 124 nursing home residents with an average age of 89. Participants received 200, 400, 600, or 800 international units (IU) vitamin D per day or placebo for five months.
At the study’s conclusion, 44 percent of the patients in the placebo group had fallen, compared with 20 percent of the group that received 800 IU vitamin D. The adjusted-incidence rate ratio of falls of the subjects in this group was 72 percent lower than that of the placebo group. Lower doses of vitamin D than 800 IU were not associated with any significant effects compared to placebo.
Over half of the subjects who were using a multivitamin supplement at the beginning of the study had suboptimal serum vitamin D levels of less than 20 nanograms per milliliter. When total vitamin D supplement intake was calculated to include multinutrient supplements, the group whose intake was in the lowest one-fifth of the participants had the greatest number of fallers, while the top fifth had the least.
“Past studies have shown that vitamin D could help prevent falls in seniors, and may be due to a possible strengthening effect the vitamin has on the musculoskeletal system,” the authors noted. “Until now, we didn’t know what dosage amount would be effective.”
They add that vitamin D supplementation should be considered in combination with other methods to help reduce falling, and recommend further research.
“Lowering the risk of falls with a simple vitamin D supplement could improve the quality of life for nursing home residents by reducing the incidence of falls," they conclude.

The Battle of the Bulge
Did you ever wonder why some people can eat all they want and not get fat, while others are constantly battling extra pounds? The answer may have to do with vitamin D and calcium status. Sunlight, UV-B, and vitamin D normalize food intake and normalize blood sugar. Weight normalization is associated with higher levels of vitamin D and adequate calcium.61 Obesity is associated with vitamin-D deficiency.62-64 In fact, obese persons have impaired production of UV-B-stimulated D and impaired absorption of food source and supplemental D.65
When the diet lacks calcium, whether from D or calcium deficiency, there is an increase in fatty acid synthase, an enzyme that converts calories into fat. Higher levels of calcium with adequate vitamin D inhibit fatty acid synthase while diets low in calcium increase fatty acid synthase by as much as five-fold. In one study, genetically obese rats lost 60 percent of their body fat in six weeks on a diet that had moderate calorie reduction but was high in calcium. All rats supplemented with calcium showed increased body temperature indicating a shift from calorie storage to calorie burning (thermogenesis).61

More on vitamin D...
During the last ten years, researchers have made a number of exciting discoveries about vitamin D. They have ascertained, for example, that vitamin D is an antioxidant that is a more effective antioxidant than vitamin E in reducing lipid peroxidation and increasing enzymes that protect against oxidation.19;20
Vitamin D deficiency decreases biosynthesis and release of insulin.21 Glucose intolerance has been inversely associated with the concentration of vitamin D in the blood. Thus, vitamin D may protect against both Type I and Type II diabetes.22
The risk of senile cataract is reduced in persons with optimal levels of D and carotenoids.23
PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) has been corrected by supplementation of D and calcium.24
Vitamin D plays a role in regulation of both the "infectious" immune system and the "inflammatory" immune system.25
Low vitamin D is associated with several autoimmune diseases including multiple sclerosis, Sjogren's Syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis, thyroiditis and Crohn's disease.26;27
Osteoporosis is strongly associated with low vitamin D. Postmenopausal women with osteoporosis respond favorably (and rapidly) to higher levels of D plus calcium and magnesium.28
D deficiency has been mistaken for fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue or peripheral neuropathy.1;28-30
Infertility is associated with low vitamin D.31 Vitamin D supports production of estrogen in men and women.32 PMS has been completely reversed by addition of calcium, magnesium and vitamin D.33 Menstrual migraine is associated with low levels of vitamin D and calcium.81
Breast, prostate, skin and colon cancer have a strong association with low levels of D and lack of sunlight.34-38
Activated vitamin D in the adrenal gland regulates tyrosine hydroxylase, the rate limiting enzyme necessary for the production of dopamine, epinephrine and norepinephrine. Low D may contribute to chronic fatigue and depression.39
Seasonal Affective Disorder has been treated successfully with vitamin D. In a recent study covering 30 days of treatment comparing vitamin D supplementation with two-hour daily use of light boxes, depression completely resolved in the D group but not in the light box group.40
High stress may increase the need for vitamin D or UV-B sunlight and calcium.41
People with Parkinsons and Alzheimers have been found to have lower levels of vitamin D.42;43
Low levels of D, and perhaps calcium, in a pregnant mother and later in the child may be the contributing cause of "crooked teeth" and myopia. When these conditions are found in succeeding generations it means the genetics require higher levels of one or both nutrients to optimize health.44-47
Behavior and learning disorders respond well to D and/or calcium combined with an adequate diet and trace minerals.48;49

Who uses Alternative Medicine...

Thomson Medstat Survey Finds Over One-Third of Americans Use Alternative Medicine...
2007-02-13 10:31:00

More than 37% of U.S. households regularly turn to alternative treatments for everything from headaches to diabetes, according to a survey conducted by Thomson Medstat, Ann Arbor, MI, a business of The Thomson Corporation. Thomson Medstat's 2006 consumer healthcare survey asked 23,000 adults about their use of alternative medicine and found that:
* 37.2% of U.S. households use some form of alternative medicine. The most common reason was to improve general wellness.
* Alternative medicine use is most prevalent among those with annual incomes exceeding $100,000 and those with post-graduate college degrees.
* 64.1% of respondents said their physicians were aware of their use of alternative medicine.
* 41.9% said at least some of the costs of their alternative treatments were covered by insurance.
* Herbal supplements and massage/chiropractic care were the most commonly used alternative care, followed by mind/body practices, energy therapies and naturopathy.

The study found that affluent, highly educated Americans are driving the growth of the alternative market. Nearly half (49.9%) of households earning more than $100,000 per year sought alternative treatments in the past 12 months. Likewise, 49.6% of those with post-graduate degrees used alternative medicine. At the lower end of the income/education scale, utilization dropped to 30% in households earning $15,000-$24,999 per year and to 18.1% among those without a high school diploma. Alternative medicines are broadly defined as therapeutic or preventive healthcare practices such as homeopathy, naturopathy, chiropractic and herbal medicine.

Common Drugs With Dangerous Side Effects And Their Natural Alternatives - 16 Top-Selling Prescription Drugs...
Many FDA-approved drugs are ineffective, unnecessary, and unsafe. They come with a slew of uncomfortable and dangerous side effects, including digestive upsets and headaches, liver and kidney impairment, and dependency. In some cases, they actually cause the very symptoms they are supposed to cure. Once you’re on one drug, you need others drugs to fix the side effects of the first one, putting you on what I call the prescription drug treadmill, draining your pockets and severely compromising your quality of life. You may need help as you age, but not that kind of help.

Stomach surgery for kids, selenium and moderate sun exposure...

Researchers discover moderate sunlight exposure helps prevent skin cancer...
NewsTarget) To the surprise of scientists, while exposure to the sun's UV rays is the main cause of skin cancer, a recent study says some sunlight also can help prevent it. The idea of sunlight helping prevent skin cancer may sound like a paradox, but the key is exposure in moderation, immunology scientists at Stanford University found.

Having higher blood levels of vitamin D could prevent as many as two-thirds of the cases of colorectal cancer and half of the cases of breast cancer..

From - Life Extension Foundation:
Life Extension Update Exclusive...

Meta-analyses published online on February 6, 2007 in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, and in the Journal of Steroid Biochemistry and Molecular Biology conclude that having higher blood levels of vitamin D could prevent as many as two-thirds of the cases of colorectal cancer and half of the cases of breast cancer in the United States.
The colorectal cancer analysis reviewed data from five studies that examined the association between blood levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D and colorectal cancer risk. Blood collected from a total of 1,448 healthy participants was tested for vitamin D and the subjects were followed for up to 25 years during which cases of colorectal cancer were recorded.
Concerning the findings, coauthor Edward D. Gorham, PhD, of the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) reported, "Through this meta-analysis we found that raising the serum level of 25-hydroxyvitamin D to 34 nanograms per milliliter would reduce the incidence rates of colorectal cancer by half. We project a two-thirds reduction in incidence with serum levels of 46 nanograms per milliliter, which corresponds to a daily intake of 2,000 IU of vitamin D3. This would be best achieved with a combination of diet, supplements and 10 to 15 minutes per day in the sun."
The review included data from the Women's Health Initiative which did not find a protective effect for low dose vitamin D on seven year colorectal cancer risk, however, the researchers observed that the meta-analysis indicates that a higher dose may reduce the disease’s incidence. "Meta-analysis is an important tool for revealing trends that may not be apparent in a single study," coauthor Sharif B. Mohr, MPH noted. "Pooling of independent but similar studies increases precision, and therefore the confidence level of the findings."
The breast cancer meta-analysis included data from the Harvard Nurses Health Study and the St. George's Hospital Study, which involved a total of 1,760 women whose vitamin D levels ranged from less than 13 nanograms per liter to approximately 52 nanograms per milliliter.
"The data were very clear, showing that individuals in the group with the lowest blood levels had the highest rates of breast cancer, and the breast cancer rates dropped as the blood levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D increased," first author Cedric F. Garland, DrPH, of UCSD stated. "The serum level associated with a 50 percent reduction in risk could be maintained by taking 2,000 international units of vitamin D3 daily plus, when the weather permits, spending 10 to 15 minutes a day in the sun."
It was noted, however, that for some individuals, any amount of sun exposure is inadvisable.
Health Concern

Breast cancer
Vitamin A and vitamin D3 inhibit breast cancer cell division and can induce cancer cells to differentiate into mature, noncancerous cells. Vitamin D3 works synergistically with tamoxifen (and melatonin) to inhibit breast cancer cell proliferation.
Daily doses of vitamin A, 350,000 to 500,000 IU were given to 100 patients with metastatic breast carcinoma treated by chemotherapy. A significant increase in the complete response was observed; however, response rates, duration of response and projected survival were only significantly increased in postmenopausal women with breast cancer (Israel et al. 1985).
Breast cancer patients may take between 4000 to 6000 IU of vitamin D3 every day. Water-soluble vitamin A can be taken in doses of 100,000-300,000 IU every day. Monthly blood tests are needed to make sure toxicity does not occur in response to these high daily doses of vitamin A and vitamin D3. After 4-6 months, the doses of vitamin D3 and vitamin A can be reduced.
Monthly blood tests should include complete blood chemistry, with tests for liver function and serum calcium levels, prolactin, parathyroid hormone, and the tumor marker CA 27.29 (or CA 15.3). Additional blood tests to consider are the CEA and GGTP tests. These tests monitor the progress of therapies used and also detect toxicity from high doses of vitamin A and vitamin D3. The patient should insist on obtaining a copy of their blood workups every month.

Proper blood sugar levels are critical to health...

BLOOD SUGAR LEVELS: A GLOBAL CRISIS ...
While there is no doubt an awareness among the general public that diabetes is very bad news, just how bad it is may not be fully appreciated, especially to the extent that it prompts serious and sustained attempts to avoid Type 2 disease through lifestyle changes. A study just published in The Lancet spells out the seriousness of the problem. The investigators examined the connection between elevated blood sugar levels and mortality from heart disease and stroke on a worldwide basis. They found that higher than optimum blood sugar levels were responsible worldwide for 21% of deaths from ischemic (directly due to blood clots) heart disease and for 13% of deaths from stroke, which when added to the deaths from diabetes itself, puts this condition in the top five causes of mortality, accounting for over 3 million deaths per year. The observed positive association between blood glucose and cardiovascular risk extends well below the usual glucose levels used for identifying diabetes or even prediabetic disorders. Prevention therefore involves interventions aimed at shifting the distribution of blood glucose concentrations downward for the entire population. The authors are unclear as to the how this is to be accomplished worldwide, given the diversity of populations, cultures and diets. However, non-pharmaceutical approaches would seem to be restricted to interventions associated with diet, energy intake, avoidance of obesity or even being overweight, and exercise and perhaps some supplements. In an editorial, Avendano and Mackenbach point out that this study shows that mortality attributable to higher than optimum blood glucose levels is about three times greater than that attributable to diabetes as such and suggest that the effect of elevated blood glucose levels has been seriously underestimated.

PREVENTING SUDDEN DEATH FROM CORONARY HEART DISEASE WITH OMEGA-3 FATTY ACID...
INTERNATIONAL HEALTH NEWS:
For some, sudden death is the first indication of the presence of coronary heart disease and even when the existence of this disease is recognized, sudden death is not an uncommon event. Currently, prevention of sudden death focuses on three interventions: implantable defibrillators, automated external defibrillators placed in public places and the consumption of omega-3 fatty acids. This study compares the defibrillator approach with an intervention aimed at increasing blood levels of these fatty acids. The justification in part was based on a meta-analysis that found that omega-3 fatty acids from fish and fish oil (EPA and DHA) reduced all-cause mortality and various outcomes from cardiovascular disease such as sudden death, death from cardiac disease, and nonfatal myocardial infarction (heart attack). The study found that raising omega-3 levels would have about 8 times the impact of distributing external defibrillators and twice the impact of implanting such devices. Furthermore, the authors point out that there would also be benefits from raising omega-3 levels in individuals who do not qualify for or had not been identified as candidates for implantable devices. This study, which was based on data from the literature, used omega-3 parameters taken from two studies, one of which found a 62% decrease in risk of cardiac arrest for healthy individuals taking omega-3 supplements, and one which found a 45% decrease in risk of cardiac arrest attributable to omega-3 supplements for patients with a prior heart attack. This latter study used 840 mg/day of easily absorbable EPA + DHA.

Today, cardiovascular related health problems together comprise fully one half of all causes of death in the US. Pauling and Rath's brilliant analysis of CVD is absolutely compelling and amply supported by numerous epidemiological and clinical studies. His unified theory of CVD constitutes one of the greatest breakthroughs in modern science, and yet has been almost completely ignored by the mainstream medical establishment, and received almost no press.

New study confirms, low omega 3's and high insulin levels cause obesity, not fats in general... Eat more fat, lose weight...

More fat linked to less weight in kids study...

By staff reporter
29/01/2007- Higher intake of fats is associated with lower body weight, says new research from Sweden that offers an alternative side to the role of fat intake in the rise of obesity. The research also correlated higher BMI with higher sugar intake.
Researcher Malin Haglund Garemo, a dietitian from Gothenburg University in Sweden, said that more studies are planned to investigate if obesity was being caused by an early increase in insulin, and not fat.
"Such results would go against the common perception that fat causes increased insulin production as a result of insulin resistance," she said.
The rate of childhood obesity is set to double by the end of the decade, according to recent forecasts by the International Obesity Task Force (IOTF). The alarming figures on childhood obesity estimate that by 2010 almost 287 million kids will be obese, and the overall obese population could rise to 700 million by 2015.
Garemos dissertation study focused on 182 healthy four-year-olds in Gothenburg and examined eating habits and lifestyles. Twenty per cent of the children were classified as being overweight based on their body mass index (BMI greater than 25 kg per sq. m and less than 30 kg sq. m), and two per cent were obese (BMI greater than 3030 kg sq. m).
"Most of the children in our study come from good socioeconomic backgrounds. If the study had reflected all four-year-olds in Sweden, more children would probably have been overweight," said Haglund Garemo.
Diets, socio-economic, lifestyle and health questionnaires were completed by the parents of the children, and analysis of the children's body build showed that weight increases was a result of the body storing more fat, but those who ate the most fat were not the ones who weighed most. Instead, children who ate less fat had higher BMIs, reports Haglund Garemo.
Startlingly, a fourth of all energy requirements of the children was coming from "junk food" (candy, ice cream, cookies, and sweet beverages), despite the overall energy intakes being in accordance with Nordic nutrition recommendations (NNR 2004).
"Most children had higher intake of saturated fat and sucrose than NNR 2004, while the intake of polyunsaturated fat - especially omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin D and iron were lower than recommended in most children," wrote Haglund Garemo.
"Every third child in the study ate far too little unsaturated fat, above all too little omega-3. These children had significantly higher body weight. This supports other studies that show that obese children have shortages of omega-3," she said.
Haglund Garemo also reported that many of the four-year old girls in the study were already displaying signs of the metabolic syndrome, a condition characterised by central obesity, hypertension, and disturbed glucose and insulin metabolism. The syndrome has been linked to increased risks of both type 2 diabetes and CVD.
Indeed, the research indicated that children with the highest insulin levels gained the most weight since birth.
"Risk factors for the metabolic syndrome can be identified already in healthy 4-year olds, especially in girls," she said.

Broccoli-tomato combo reduces prostate tumors...

A report published the January 15, 2007 issue of the journal Cancer Research concluded that a diet enhanced with tomato and broccoli powder was better than one containing either nutrient alone at shrinking prostate tumors in rats.
Food science and human nutrition professor John Erdman and colleagues at the University of Illinois and Ohio State University conducted the current research on rats with implanted prostate cancer tumors. The animals were divided to receive diets containing 10 percent broccoli powder, 10 percent tomato powder, or both. Other rats received lycopene (the red pigment in tomatoes and other red fruits) or finasteride (a drug used to treat prostate enlargement), or were surgically castrated.
After 22 weeks of treatment, rats who received the combination of broccoli and tomato powder experienced greater shrinkage of their tumors as determined by tumor weight than animals in any other group. Biopsies confirmed the reduction in proliferation in this group compared to the others, with the exception of the castrated rats whose tumor shrinkage approached that of the broccoli-tomato group.
"As nutritionists, it was very exciting to compare this drastic surgery to diet and see that tumor reduction was similar,” stated research team member and report coauthor Kirstie Canene-Adams. “Older men with slow-growing prostate cancer who have chosen watchful waiting over chemotherapy and radiation should seriously consider altering their diets to include more tomatoes and broccoli."
"When tomatoes and broccoli are eaten together, we see an additive effect, Dr Erdman explained. “We think it's because different bioactive compounds in each food work on different anticancer pathways."
"To get these effects, men should consume daily 1.4 cups of raw broccoli and 2.5 cups of fresh tomato, or 1 cup of tomato sauce, or ½ cup of tomato paste,” Canene-Adams suggested.
Other research conducted at the University of Illinois by Dr Erdman’s colleague Elizabeth Jeffrey discovered that sulfur compounds in broccoli enhance enzymes in the body that degrade cancer-causing substances. "For ten years, I've been learning how the phytochemicals in tomatoes affect the progression of prostate cancer,” Dr Erdman stated. “Meanwhile Dr Jeffery has been investigating the ways in which the healthful effects of broccoli are produced. Teaming up to see how these vegetables worked together just made sense and certainly contributes to our knowledge about dietary treatments for prostate cancer."

by Felicity Stone

If you're in the habit of skipping breakfast, studies show you should rethink your morning routine. Eating breakfast has health benefits and can help manage your weight, according to Rutland Regional Medical Center in Vermont. Here's what the research indicates:

Comment: I am especially upset about the FDA approving a diet drug for obese dogs. It's one thing as humans to decide that you want to eat junk food or foods that create weight problems for us, but animals have no choice in the matter. You determine what they eat.
Please understand what dogs and cats should eat, so they do not become obese and need drugs. Shame on us...

Improve your thoughts, improve your life. Change your thoughts, change your life... You are in charge of your future...

Over the past 30 years, I have come to learn about Quantum Physics and how these principals affect our personal life, and our future, when we understand them.

Quantum Physics is the new understanding of what really makes up our world around us. Einstein taught us that E=MC2... In other words, energy is the same as matter and light. Everything in the universe is made up of energy, it's all one big energy field. Below the molecular level of all things, is energy vibrating at different frequencies. Even our thoughts, it appears, are made up of energy and have specific vibrations that are either positive or negative. Thoughts, which are images in our mind, eventually becomes our physical reality. Our imagination is our way of practicing creation. Einstein put it this way, " Imagination is everything, it is the preview of coming attractions." Buddha understood this principal and said "We are what we think. All that we are, arises with our thoughts. With our thoughts, we make our world." How then do we make 2007 better than 2006? We begin to think different thoughts, and these thoughts and emotions will attract what we want in our life. We get what we think about most. "Our destiny changes with our thought; we shall become what we wish to become, do what we wish to do,when our habitual thought corresponds with our desire." Orison S. Marder ...

The secret to having a better future lies in the Law of Attraction... Here are some thoughts to ponder to make 2007, better.
  1. Images in our mind, determine our future
  2. Imagination, is Image Making - the process of creation
  3. Thoughts have a magnetic frequency
  4. Thoughts become things
  5. We are always in creation mode, whether we know it or not
  6. What we focus on with thought and emotion, becomes our reality
  7. If your feeling good, you give off good vibrations
  8. Circumstances are just your current situation, the result of old thoughts

Dr. Wayne Dyer states in his book, The Power of Intention, that " If we change the way we look at things, the things we look at change." Quantum Physics has proved this to be a scientific fact. " You cannot solve a problem by condemning it". Instead, " You must contemplate yourself surrounded by the conditions you want to produce".

Here are some video clips from the new movie called The Secret, to help you understand these ideas and to start putting them in motion this year.
