The other day I reviewed an hour and 16 minute lecture of a 1 year study from Stanford University on which diets, published in book form, work the best. It's an excellent study and the diet recommending the lowest carbohydrate level ended up winning. The study compared the Atkins diet to the Ornish diet, the Zone diet, and the LEARN diet. If you are not familiar with the LEARN diet, it is what the food pyramid is based on and is considered the standard healthy diet with grains recommended as the most important.
It surprised the man who ran the study, a 25 year veteran of a vegetarian diet. Even more surprising to some perhaps, but not to me, was his conclusion at the end where he says that based on the studies results, a Paleolithic or Hunter Gatherer diet eliminating all grains and dairy, was perhaps even better than the Atkins, which ended up winning. The researcher also stated that if nuts and seeds, like I use in my program, were recommended more than heavy fats like cream and butter in Atkins, the results might have even been better.
Not only did the low carb Atkins diet win overall in the diet study, it had the best lab test results in lowering LDL cholesterol and raising HDL, the good kind. My program, Forever Changes Weight-Loss and Longevity Lifestyle Program, was not in the study but it would be closer to a modern day doable version of the Hunter Gatherer - Paleolithic program, with the option of getting into ketosis, like the induction portion of Atkins program.
Ketosis is the natural way the body burns fat instead of sugar for energy, like when a bear hibernates. It is safe and not the same as ketoacidosis, which is dangerous and happens sometimes in diabetics.
Dr. Dean Ornish, author of the very low fat, high carb diet, and Barry Sears, the author of the Zone Diet, were not happy with the results of the study and so the researcher of the study blocked the diet names during the presentation, if you watch and wonder why.
I know many of you watch movies that are longer than an hour and 16 minutes, so if you want to see independent results of a year long study, done in a very entertaining way, I have included it below.
Enjoy... And remember, you're never too old to become younger or thinner.

The case for low-carbohydrate diets is gaining weight. Christopher Gardner, PhD, assistant professor of medicine at the Stanford Prevention Research Center, has completed the largest and longest-ever comparison of four popular diets using real-world conditions, which he discusses - the lowest-carbohydrate Atkins diet came out on top.

The Cause of Type 2 diabetes confirmed by medical research...It's not what you think and it can be fixed in a week to 30 days.
HealthBlogger is dedicated to bringing you information that can dramatically improve your life and that has real science behind the data. This is the case this week.
Below I have included video lectures and blogs that bring proof of what the real cause of Type 2 diabetes is.
Modern medicine has taught that type 2 diabetes is genetic and cannot be cured. That is not true. What is true is that sugary foods and drinks TURN ON BAD GENES, this is the science of Epigenetics, but they can also be TURNED OFF.
Gene expression, as it is applied in nutrition, is now called Nutrigenomics.
The inclusion of high fructose corn syrup into all food stuffs, as well as a diet too high in sugar, high glycemic breads, cereals, cakes, cookies, and pastries with their lack of fiber, are the real culprits.
We need to go back to the diet we ate for millions of years as hunter gatherers, to TURN OFF THE FAT GENES.
If you want to lose weight and lower your blood sugar levels, which is the biggest factor in premature aging, I have recommended resources in previous blogs and in my weight loss program that really work.

Do you remember this study from a previous HealthBlogger?
Mice were given water, water with sugar, or water with fructose. All the mice began the study at an average weight of 39 grams. Those consuming the fructose-sweetened water showed significant weight gain over the course of the study, with an average final weight of 48 grams—compared with averages below 44 grams for the other groups—and had about 90 percent more body fat than the mice that consumed water only. Total caloric intake was lower in the mice that consumed the fructose-sweetened water than in the other groups, except for the control animals provided with water only.
“We were surprised to see that mice actually ate less when exposed to fructose-sweetened beverages, and therefore didn’t consume more overall calories,” said Dr. Tschöp. “Nevertheless, they gained significantly more body fat within a few weeks.”
Do you need more proof? I think so, or you would have changed your habits by now.
I think many of you need more convincing beyond my opinions. Please review this week's blog. I promise you it will make my point.

Latest Diabetes Figures Paint Grim Global Picture...
The International Diabetes Federation (IDF) has released new data showing that a staggering 285 million people worldwide have diabetes. The latest figures from the IDF Diabetes Atlas indicate that people in low and middle-income countries (LMCs) are bearing the brunt of the epidemic, and that the disease is affecting far more people of working age than previously believed.
In 1985, the best data available suggested that 30 million people had diabetes worldwide. Fast-forward 15 years and the numbers were revised to just over 150 million. Today, less than 10 years on, the new figures -- launched at the 20th World Diabetes Congress in Montreal, Canada -- put the number closer to 300 million, with more than half aged between 20 and 60. IDF predicts that, if the current rate of growth continues unchecked, the total number will exceed 435 million in 2030 -- many more people than the current population of North America.
The Bitter Truth About Sugar...Robert H. Lustig, MD, UCSF Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Endocrinology, explores the damage caused by sugary foods. He argues that fructose (too much) and fiber (not enough) appear to be cornerstones of the obesity epidemic through their effects on insulin. Series: UCSF Mini Medical School for the Public [7/2009] [Health and Medicine]
Do you give your baby infant formula? Like Similac Isomil?
First Ingredient: 43.2% Corn syrup solids
4th ingredient: 10.3% Sugar (sucrose)
That's over 50% sugar - No wonder infants 6 months old are often over weight.
The Diabesity Epidemic Part 1: How Diabetes and Obesity are Ravaging America Today...
Do you suffer from type 2 diabetes? Are you overweight, exhausted, and feeling 20 years older than you actually are as a result? Are you tired of measuring your blood sugar and taking medication all the time? You may not believe diabetes is reversible, but in todays UltraWellness blog Dr. Mark Hyman is going to explain how you can reverse it using a comprehensive diet and lifestyle program.
The Diabesity Epidemic Part 2: Why Conventional Medicine Actually Makes Things Worse...
Like most of us, you have likely been taught that type 2 diabetes is a result of too much blood sugar and too little insulin. In this weeks UltraWellness blog, Dr. Mark Hyman shatters that myth and explains what the real causes for diabesity are.
The Diabesity Epidemic Part 3: Treating the REAL Causes Instead of the Symptoms...
Think there is no way to cure diabetes? Think again! In this weeks UltraWellness blog, Dr. Mark Hyman explains how rebalance the 7 key systems in your body can help you rebalance your insulin levels and resolve your health problems.
Diabesity Tip 1: You are Not Doomed to Get it...
Mark Hyman, M.D. explains how diabesity (diabetes + obesity) is not something we are doomed to get based on our genetics -- it's completely under our control and Dr. Hyman shows you how.
Diabesity Tip 2: How Hidden Toxins Wreak Havoc...
Watch as Dr. Hyman explores how toxins hidden inside your body can wreak havoc on your metabolism and trigger diabesity (diabetes + obesity).
Diabesity Tip 3: Balance Blood Sugar by Relaxing...
Want a quick, easy, surprisingly refreshing way to help rebalance your insulin levels and overcome diabesity? The solution is simple: Just learn to relax! Stress makes you fat and contributes to the development of diabesity. Listen as Dr. Hyman explores the connection between stress a diabesity (diabetes + obesity).
Diabesity Tip 4: Use Your Fork to Reverse Diabesity?...
How can a fork help you prevent, treat, and even reverse diabesity and let you re-gain control of your life? Listen in as Dr. Hyman will also explain the four simple nutritional principles that govern the entire dietary program his patients follow to prevent and reverse diabesity. Follow those four rules and you will go a long way toward recovering from diabesity.
Diabesity Tip 5: Why Medications Don't Fix the Problem...
Watch as Dr. Hyman reviews how medications do not treat the causes of your diabesity, they just mask the symptoms. While they may be a necessary bridge for some (there are two that Dr. Hyman sometimes find helpful), the only way you are going to heal from diabesity is if you treat the underlying dietary, lifestyle, and environmental causes that are driving your condition.

Do you have heart disease - How would you know?
This is an important question because according to the latest statistics, 90% of coronary disease is asymptomatic. This means you don't know you are developing the disease until it's often very well established.
According to Dr. Sinatra's and Dr. Robert's new book called Reverse Heart Disease Now, 20 to 25% of young people ages 14 to 35 have signs of coronary artery disease and don't know it. Also, you might not be aware that approximately 50% of people who have heart attacks have normal cholesterol levels. You know by now, if you read my blogs, that cholesterol is not the cause of heart disease, see Cholesterol and Heart Disease--A Phony Issue, for the evidence.
I highly recommend you read their new book. With 50 collective years of treating heart disease, these doctors favor nutritional supplements and explain what drugs are good and which ones are not. I also have a page that describes the causes and natural alternatives on my page called How To Mend A Broken Heart.
A new State Of The Art supplement has just been released by NSI and it fits the bill, in my oppinion, if you are wanting to slow down the aging process and prevent chronic disease from getting started.
Longevity Enhancement Formulas® is a new comprehensive formula delivering superior forms and effective amounts of powerful antioxidants, essential vitamins, and minerals with the primary objective of supporting and protecting cardiovascular, neurological, immune, bone, prostate, cell division, and visual health. Longevity Enhancement Formulas promotes anti-aging (healthy aging) by improving and protecting the production of cellular energy.
Be proactive and think prevention NOW!!!
Enjoy this weeks information and remember...

Bicarbonate of Soda Used to Cure Stage Four Prostate Cancer...
(NaturalNews) Bicarbonate of soda or baking soda to cure cancer? The amazing abundance of alternative cancer cures is more than most of us know, close to 400! The more notorious alternative cancer cures are the ones that get attacked viciously by the Medical Monopoly. Those cures are the ones that begin to develop into public practices that threaten their monopoly. Then there are those inexpensive non-toxic remedies that slip by the Medical Monopoly virtually unnoticed. Some become like folk medicines that can be administered individually. This type of application worked for Vernon Johnston. He used baking soda and molasses as the driving force to recover from aggressive stage 4 prostate cancer, which had even metastasized into his bone matter!
New Evidence That Dark Chocolate Helps Ease Emotional Stress...
The "chocolate cure" for emotional stress is getting new support from a clinical trial published online in ACS' Journal of Proteome Research. It found that eating about an ounce and a half of dark chocolate a day for two weeks reduced levels of stress hormones in the bodies of people feeling highly stressed. Everyone's favorite treat also partially corrected other stress-related biochemical imbalances.
High Fructose Corn Syrup: A Recipe For Hypertension, Study Finds...
A diet high in fructose increases the risk of developing high blood pressure (hypertension), according to a paper being presented at the American Society of Nephrology's 42nd Annual Meeting and Scientific Exposition in San Diego, California. The findings suggest that cutting back on processed foods and beverages that contain high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) may help prevent hypertension.

Fish Oil May Protect Against Stroke From Ruptured Carotid Artery Plaques...
Research led by Hernan A. Bazan, MD, Assistant Professor of Surgery, Section of Vascular Surgery, at LSU Health Sciences Center New Orleans School of Medicine, has found that unstable carotid artery plaques – those in danger of rupturing and leading to a stroke – contain more inflammation and significantly less omega-3 fatty acids than asymptomatic plaques.
Olive Oil is a Medical Marvel...
(NaturalNews) In the 1930s comic strip "Popeye," Olive Oil was portrayed as a skinny weakling, a perpetual damsel in distress who couldn't survive without her Popeye coming to the rescue. But in the health world, olive oil is no nutritional weakling.Besides being one of the best sources to go to for a healthy dose of monounsaturated fat - a key nutrient for lowering cholesterol levels - olive oil is something of a medical marvel. It's always been known as a healthy oil, but only recently have we come to know just what it is specifically about olive oil that makes it so darn healthy.
Nutritional Treatments for Cardiomyopathy, CongestiveHeart Failure, and Ventricular Arrhythmias...
This report will review evidence published primarily in peer-reviewed medical journals outlining the use of nutritional supplements and other dietary modifications to treat cardiomyopathy, congestive heart failure (CHF), and ventricular arrhythmias. Some nutritional supplements presented in this report (e.g. Coenzyme Q10, magnesium) have proven so effective they should be considered a mandatory part of any treatment protocol for cardiomyopathy, congestive heart failure, and/or arrhythmias.
The Vitamin D Cure...
The Vitamin D Cure is a breakthrough way to increase your energy, decrease your pain and slim down, using the latest scientific research. We've long known that healthy Vitamin D levels are related to strong bones, but several recent peer-reviewed scientific studies have clearly shown that Vitamin D also decreases our risk of getting overweight and developing high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, arthritis, cancer, and other health problems.

The best of CW's HealthBlogger
Christopher Wiechert's HealthBlogger is far more than just a weekly blog that has me spouting on about my opinions in alternative health. Really, I focus much more on recent hard to find research on health, wellness, and anti-aging that you might not see in practice for 10 to 30 years or, perhaps ever, by modern medicine.
I know all of you are busy and don't have time to waste but I also know some of you like jokes and trivia much more than you do DISEASE PREVENTION TIPS.
I guess it's human nature just to wait till issues become chronic and you have no choice but to deal with them. I know it's more FUN to eat the way you want, in fact, if I could be healthy and do what ever I wanted, that would be my choice too.
This week I thought I would look back at the blogs I thought were most important to you, or a loved one, and put them down all in one blog, so here we go.
Please check them out and forward them along to someone who might be ready and have no choice but to make changes in their health.
And remember...
It's never too late to become younger, but, more often than not, prevention is the key.

Wake up people - Special Interest Groups are not always looking out for your best interests...
There is an ad on TV featuring a Mom and her children coming home from the store telling us that she doesn't want Washington taxing her and her family for sodas. She says a few cents adds up and families can't afford anymore taxes. She says she represents Americans Against Food Taxes.
Really... Do you fall for these manipulative ads?
Here is the actual ad... "Pennies" Americans Against Food Taxes TV Ad
First, I believe in what are called Sin Taxes. I hate the term, but if you consume alcohol, cigarettes, and drink sodas that are 99% High Fructose Corn Syrup or sugar in excess, you are likely to die early from type 2 diabetes, obesity, lung cancer, or liver disease. And before you die early you will add tremendously to America's health care costs.
I believe in your right to consume what you want, when you want. But remember, for every action there is always an equal and opposite reaction.
Americans Against Food Taxes is really a lobby group for the food manufacturers and distributors that sell this crap to you and your family. They don't care about you or your health, they just want to sell their cheap products that have a high profit for their share holders.
There are very few American citizens involved here.
Go see for yourself.

I have written about the problems with High Fructose Corn Syrup and it is well supported by research. See an example...
Remove one bad habit from your daily life, and you remove the leading cause of obesity in America...
Is it possible that fructose, which is in everything these days, can effect your metabolism in such a way as to cause you, over time, to eat less and less food and yet gain more and more weight? A recent study says yes...
Mice were given water, water with sugar, or water with fructose.
"All the mice began the study at an average weight of 39 grams.
In my opinion, if you want to consume things that are known to harm your family's health go ahead, but pay the price both in bad health and added taxes.

Obesity as Dangerous to Health as Lifetime of Smoking...
(NaturalNews) Severe obesity shortens a person's expected lifespan by 10 years, comparable to the effect of a lifetime spent smoking, according to a study conducted by researchers from Oxford University's Clinical Trial Service Unit and published in the journal The Lancet. "This is the latest and most convincing demonstration of the close relationship between being overweight and poor heart health, and confirms that smoking is harmful regardless of your weight," said Peter Weissberg of the British Heart Foundation.
In Depth: 11 Ways To Boost Your Energy...
Energy is the natural byproduct of certain lifestyle decisions. Consuming fewer calories is one of the easiest ways to boost your vitality. When you eat, blood is diverted to your stomach and gut and energy is spent on digestion. Simply cutting calories by about one-fourth will hike your energy and extend your life, according to multiple studies.
Not quite as easy as cutting calories is a practice I call detox. I'm not talking about a packaged detox kit like Master Cleanses. Just eat clean for a week. Try Dr. Elson Haas' SNACC program: Cut out all SNACCs (Sugar, Nicotine, Alcohol, Caffeine and Chemicals) and limit your menu to raw foods like nuts and seeds, berries and fruits, tons of vegetables, small portions of cooked non-gluten grains like oatmeal (or quinoa), 3-4 ounces of grilled or steamed fish or grass-fed beef a day, and lots of fresh vegetable juice and broths. You'll feel amazing, and your energy will go through the roof.
Supplements can also help. While they don't really give you energy, they can correct metabolic issues that are draining it. Coenzyme Q10, for instance, is a powerful antioxidant that is also fuel for the heart. Supplements can speed along certain metabolic pathways that are nutrient dependent and that get sluggish (and energy-draining) when those nutrients are in short supply.
Large Epidemiologic Study Supports Brain Power Of Fish In Older People...
Experts estimate that over 24 million people worldwide suffer from dementia, and many of these people live in low- and middle-income countries. Recently, there has been growing interest in whether dietary factors, particularly oily fish and meat, might influence the onset and/or severity of dementia. Oily fish are rich in omega-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids, which some studies suggest are positively related to cognitive function in later life.
Study pinpoints Pycnogenol’s pain-relieving potential...
The anti-inflammatory and pain reducing effects of an extract from French maritime pine bark may work by stopping two enzymes linked to inflammation, says a new study. Pycnogenol, extracted from the bark of the French maritime pine Pinus Pinaster, appears to inhibit the generation of the pro-inflammatory COX-2 and 5-LOX enzymes, according to results published in International Immunopharmacology. The results appear to explain the positive results previously observed linking the pine bark extract to benefits in conditions as varied as asthma and osteoarthritis.
Are We What Our Mothers Ate?...
Mothers' health in the days and weeks prior to becoming pregnant may determine the health of offspring much later in life, according to results of studies reported at the annual meeting of the Society for the Study of Reproduction, which takes place July 18 to 22 at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center in Pittsburgh. These studies demonstrate that maternal nutrition, protein intake and level of fat in the diet may cause epigenetic changes in the developing fetus that can have long-term health consequences.
Baking Soda Prevents Kidney Disease, Renal Failure and Kidney Dialysis...
(NaturalNews) A recent study discovered a new use for common household baking soda. Tomato Pill Found to Reverse Heart Disease...
(NaturalNews) A pill made from tomatoes may do more to help treat heart disease and high cholesterol than many pharmaceutical products currently on the market, according to preliminary trials carried out by researchers from Cambridge University. The pill, known as Ateronon, contains a version of the tomato phytonutrient lycopene, which gives the fruits their bright red color. Lycopene has been shown in a number of studies to help relieve the symptoms of heart disease and to help prevent cancer
Chocolate cuts death rate...
HEART attack survivors who eat chocolate two or more times per week cut their risk of dying from heart disease about three fold compared to those who never touch the stuff, scientists have reported.
Smaller quantities confer less protection, but are still better than none, according to the study, which appears in the September issue of the Journal of Internal Medicine.

As an observer of human behavior, one of the most fascinating things I've ever witnessed is really smart people dying of diseases that are easily preventable through basic nutrition (vitamin D, plant juices, targeted supplements, superfoods, etc.). I know doctors dying of cancer who take chemotherapy over vitamin D supplements. I know members of MENSA who are killing themselves with junk foods and diabetes. I know extremely intelligent attorneys and physicists who are among the smartest people in their respective fields; but when it comes to basic health, they're completely ignorant.
Why Are Smart People So Ignorant When it Comes to Health, Vaccines and Vitamin D? (Part Two)...
Powerful corporations, of course, require the services of oppressive government to enforce nutritional ignorance across the population. In the USA, the Food and Drug Administration is the primary enforcer of nutritional ignorance.
Why Are Smart People So Ignorant When it Comes to Health, Vaccines and Vitamin D? (Part Three)...
Ultimately, what's more important than teaching people nutritional knowledge is teaching people the skills of thinking for themselves. A population of independent thinkers would naturally embrace knowledge of nutritional remedies and natural cures. They would naturally resist the FDA's pro-drug propaganda, and they would be able to more readily recognize the value of safe, effective and low-cost natural medicine. The reason why this isn't happening right now in modern society is obvious when you realize that people are not trained to THINK, they are trained to follow orders.
Vitamin C Boosts Life Expectancy and Removes Plaque from Blood Vessels...
(NaturalNews) A high intake of vitamin C is shown to improve life expectancy by six years. Not only does vitamin C help prevent the diseases that shorten life, but the vitamin itself has life sustaining properties. Vitamin C is known to help prevent heart attacks and strokes. It repairs blood vessels and helps reduce heart disease, which are the leading causes of death in the United States.

Thermogenesis and appetite control are the best ways to lose body fat, long term...
For over 25 years of my career I have been teaching the principals of thermogenesis and appetite control in helping people lose weight long term.
Caloric restriction and exercise is the most common way people are taught to lose weight, but long term, it has a poor record. 95% of those that lose weight this way gain all the weight back, plus some, within 5 years.
A better way is to learn the principals that make you less hungry and help increase your metabolism by eating more frequently and using nutraceuticals like green tea extract, Omega 3's, and fibers like Glucomannan to make you feel full.
Want a better way to feel full and lose weight for a whole lot less money, than Fullbar or Lipozene...
Forever Changes Weight-Loss & Longevity Lifestyle Program, Developed by Christopher Wiechert, C.N.C.
I have highlighted 2 great videos this week by Dr. Mark Hyman that explain these principals in a very simple manner.

5 Simple Steps to Burn Fat without Eating Less... VIDEO
Want to learn how to lose weight without changing how much you eat?
That may sounds impossible, but it can be done. In this week's UltraWellnessblog Dr. Mark Hyman explains the concept of thermogenesis and provides 5 simple steps you can take to turn up your metabolic fire and lose weightwithout changing the amount of calories you consume.
The Super Fiber that Controls Your Appetite and Blood Sugar... VIDEO
Imagine eating 12 pounds of food a day -- and still staying thin and healthy. That may sound crazy, but it's exactly what our hunter-gatherer ancestors ate for millennia! And they didn't have any obesity or chronic diseases like heart disease, diabetes, cancer, or dementia. The key was fiber. And in today's UltraWellness blog, Dr. Mark Hyman will tell you how increasing your daily intake of soluble fiber can help you reduce your appetite, lose weight, and protect you from chronic illness.
Green tea catechins linked to weight loss: Study...
Antioxidant compounds in green tea could help promote exercise-induced abdominal fat loss, according to a new study from the American Society of Nutrition.
Cetechins are a sub-class of flavonoids, or antioxidant compounds. Green tea is a rich source of catechins, which are thought to play a beneficial role in reducing the risk of various diseases, including Alzheimer's, certain cancers, cardiovascular and oral health.
Precious studies have also suggested that tea catechins may help promote weight loss. The current study, published in The Journal of Nutrition, found that consuming a beverage containing green tea catechins (625mg/d) may enhance exercise-induced loss of abdominal fat and improve triglyceride levels.
Green Tea Compound, EGCG, May Be A Therapy For People With Rheumatoid Arthritis...
A new study from the University of Michigan Health System suggests that a compound in green tea may provide therapeutic benefits to people with rheumatoid arthritis. The study, presented April 29 at the Experimental Biology 2007 in Washington, D.C., looks at a potent anti-inflammatory compound derived from green tea. Researchers found that the compound – called epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) – inhibited the production of several molecules in the immune system that contribute to inflammation and joint damage in people with rheumatoid arthritis.
Five Cups and More of Green Tea Billed as Best Defense from Cancer, Says Japanese Research...
(NaturalNews) Moderation in all things may typically be the best route to all-around health, but when it comes to green tea consumption, moderation does not equal disease prevention. In fact, as many as five cups of green tea or more - clearly not a moderate amount - is believed to be the best defense from cancer.
Omega-3 linked to lower body weight: Study...
Increased blood levels of the omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA is linked to lower incidence of obesity, suggesting a role for fish oils in weight management.
New findings reported in the British Journal of Nutrition indicate that overweight and obese people have blood levels of omega-3 fatty acids almost 1 per cent lower than people with a healthy weight.
“Our findings suggest that n-3 PUFA may play an important role in weight status and abdominal adiposity,” wrote the researchers, led by Professor Monohar Garg from the University of Newcastle, and president elect of the Nutrition Society of Australia.
Previous studies have implicated omega-3 in protective benefits against obesity, and the new study adds to this small but growing body of evidence. A considerable number of studies already support the benefits of the omega-3 fatty acids eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, C20:5 n-3) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, C22:6 n-3) for cardiovascular health, and cognitive health. Other areas of potential for the fatty acids include mood and behaviour, eye health, cancer risk reduction, and improved infant development.
Huge study concludes soda consumption undeniably linked to obesity...
(NaturalNews) Much like Big Tobacco once did with nicotine, the soda industry and high-fructose corn syrup producers of America have maintained a ridiculous state of flat-out denial about the links between soda consumption and obesity. "Sodas don't make you fat," they insist. Meanwhile, as Americans guzzle down insanely large quantities of soda and liquid sugar with each passing year, rates of obesity and diabetes continue to steadily climb. Surely diet must have something to do with it, right?

2 new things to report this week...
There are some great articles, studies, and videos in this week's blog. In my first few articles I have focused on 2 things that I have just discovered that I think are of major importance.
The first is a report on a nutraceutical called L-Carnosine. As described in the report, Carnosine has the remarkable ability to rejuvenate cells approaching senescence (the end of the life cycle of dividing cells), helping support normal appearance and cellular lifespan. As an antioxidant, carnosine effectively helps to neutralize the most destructive of free radicals: the hydroxyl radical, superoxide, singlet oxygen, and the peroxyl radical. Carnosine may contain antioxidant properties that help support the functional life of the body's key building blocks: cells, proteins, DNA, and lipids.
The second thing I discovered this week is a recent study from The Life Extension Foundation, that shows that regular CoQ10 (that comes in powder form from Japan) works well for most people. But in people with Congestive Heart Failure, it's assimilation is not near enough to support heart health and the benefits that studies have shown it has in heart disease prevention and improvement.
The normal form of CoQ10 is what is called the oxidized or the ubiquinone form. The body enzymatically converts it to the reduced or ubiquinol, form before it can be of any benefit. In patients with fluid retention, that often comes with CHF, this process in negatively effected. The researchers have discovered that taking CoQ10 in the reduced ubiquinol form increases the absorption as much as 8 times.
The bottom line is this. Regular CoQ10 does not work in those with CHF and it is the first line in alternative medicine for improvement in this disease.
I had to make a change in my own program immediately to Ubiquinol, from the ubiquinone form I usually take. I was taking 600 mgs of normal CoQ10 and getting maybe 75 mgs into my system. Now I will be taking 400 mgs of the reduced form, and it will be like getting 1200 mgs into my system, of the oxidized form.
This is why continual research is so important, and why it can make a major difference in the results you are looking for and expecting from nutraceuticals.
If you know anyone with CHF and they are using supplements like CoQ10 to improve their health, please forward them this Blog.
Enjoy this week's studies and remember...
You are never too old to get younger.

Barron Report: Healthy Aging & Turning Back the Clock...
The End of Old Age - I’m not a big believer in magic bullets. Everything I’ve ever learned says that you’re only as strong as your weakest link. That’s why I’ve always preached that the key to health is raising your entire Baseline of Health. But that said, I have to admit that what we’re talking about here today is a uniquely important anti-aging discovery.
What’s the Secret? - The substance I’m talking about is L-Carnosine. It’s a naturally occurring combination of two amino acids, alanine and histadine, that was discovered in Russia in the early 1900s. Because much of the research was done in Russia, it has been largely unavailable in the United States until recently. Now, though, there have been a number of studies and experiments in other parts of the world verifying everything done in Russia – and more.
Alleviating Congestive Heart Failure with Coenzyme Q10...
One of the most frequent causes of hospital admissions in older adults is the devastating condition known as congestive heart failure. Characterized by disabling symptoms of difficulty breathing, fatigue, and swelling of the extremities, congestive heart failure also increases the risk of early demise. Fortunately, scientists have discovered that the mitochondrial energizer coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) can offer powerful assistance to those challenged with congestive heart failure, improving the heart’s pumping ability and even reducing the need for medications. Since CoQ10 levels are depleted by aging and statin medications and tend to be low in those with congestive heart failure, achieving optimal blood levels of CoQ10 may be an important strategy for safeguarding cardiac health.
Congestive Heart Failure - The Exception to Our Success?...
Congestive heart failure (CHF) seems to be the exception when it comes to our national battle against heart disease. While other forms of heart disease, including coronary artery disease (CAD), are becoming less common, the rates of CHF continue to rise. The rate of hospitalization for CHF increased 3- to 4-fold between 1971 and 1999 (American Heart Association 2004; McCullough PA et al 2002). It is the leading cause of hospitalization among people over the age of 65, accounting for about 20 percent of the hospital admissions in this group (Jessup M et al 2003).
CHF occurs when the heart cannot pump efficiently enough to supply the body with freshly oxygenated blood. It affects about 5 million people in the United States. Within 5 years, medical experts predict that about half of these patients will have died of their conditions (American Heart Association 2004). Hoping to prolong survival, patients with CHF are typically treated with an array of powerful medications that have been shown to increase survival, often at a high cost. The conventional drugs used to treat CHF have significant adverse effects and, in many cases, implantation of a lifesaving medical device, or even having a heart transplant, may be necessary.
Low levels of vitamin D may increase the risk of dying from all causes by 150 per cent, suggests a study with over 700 elderly women...
Women with blood levels of the vitamin lower than 15.3 nanograms per millilitre were more likely to die from causes such as heart disease and cancer, than women with higher levels (above 27 ng/ml), according to findings published in Nutrition Research, “The present findings from this population-based cohort of ageing are consistent with the association between low serum 25(OH)D and mortality that has been described in […] the general population,” wrote the researchers, led by Richard Semba from the Johns Hopkins University.
Vitamin D Prevents Cancer: Is It True? - a 30 minute video on disease prevention that you have to see and share...
In a new study, researchers at the UCSD School of Medicine and Moores Cancer Center used a complex computer prediction model to determine that intake of vitamin D3 and calcium would prevent 58,000 new cases of breast cancer and 49,000 new cases of colorectal cancer annually in the US and Canada. The researchers model also predicted that 75% of deaths from these cancers could be prevented with adequate intake of vitamin D3 and calcium.
Bogus Science: Medical "Fact" About Aging Brains Shrinking is Wrong...
(NaturalNews) As people age, the chance of dementia rises. The most dreaded form of this memory robbing condition is Alzheimer's disease (AD). Already the seventh-leading cause of death in the U.S., the incidence of Alzheimer's is expected to soar as the huge Baby Boomer generation ages. According to the National Institute on Aging, as Alzheimer's progresses, the brain shrinks. So it is not a comforting thought to know that science has long stated aging brains shrink as we grow older, even if you don't have AD. Having a brain that is going to atrophy with the passing years seems to indicate that some mental decline must be inevitable.
Well, guess what? That "fact" is looking more and more like another example of a bogus belief ingrained in the medical establishment that is not backed up by solid evidence.
Top Five Herbs that Promote Kidney Health...
(NaturalNews) While many herbs are popular for liver and colon health, the best herbs for kidney maintenance are not as well known in Western medicine. Those suffering nausea, loss of appetite, stunted growth, dry skin, sleep disorders, concentration problems, or puffy eyes should consider a kidney flush. This article will review five plants traditionally used to promote and maintain kidney health.
Green Tea could Naturally Prevent and Treat Osteoporosis, Scientists Say...
NaturalNews) According to the National Institute of Arthritis, Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS), the bone thinning condition known as osteoporosis is a major public health threat for 44 million Americans, 68 percent of whom are women. Approximately 10 million Americans already have osteoporosis and another 34 million more have low bone mass, placing them at high risk for this disease. Of course, Big Pharma claims it has the solution -- lots of prescription drugs (including the highly hyped Boniva, Fosamax and Reclast) that supposedly strengthen bones and treat osteoporosis. Unfortunately, these medications are loaded with potentially severe and even fatal side effects, including cancer and disintegration of bone in the jaw.
Maximizing Methylation: The Key to Healthy Aging...
Can you optimize the function of all the systems in your body and protect yourself from nearly all the diseases of aging simply by taking a few vitamins? You can, but you need to know which vitamins to take and how they work.
In this weeks UltraWellness blog Dr. Mark Hyman explains the importance of methylation, and how maximizing it can protect your health long term.
Promoting Mitochondrial Health - Nutrients That Optimize Cellular Energy...
Mitochondria, the powerhouses in each human cell, have the crucial job of generating energy for use throughout the body. With advancing age and cumulative free radical attack, however, mitochondria can become less efficient, leading to degenerative changes associated with aging.
Maintaining healthy mitochondrial function is critically important in preventing disease and promoting longevity. Nutrients such as coenzyme Q10, acetyl-L-carnitine, and alpha-lipoic acid help optimize mitochondrial health. Other nutritional remedies—including carnosine, benfotiamine, and rhodiola—complement the actions of CoQ10, acetyl-L-carnitine, and alpha-lipoic acid in promoting a healthy and energetic lifestyle.
Type 2 Diabetes Breakthrough: The Mediterranean Diet...
(NaturalNews) Natural health advocates have been shown to be right yet again. In one of the longest randomized trials of its kind, European scientists compared the typical low-fat diet for type 2 diabetes management prescribed by mainstream doctors to a Mediterranean-style (MED) diet rich in "good" fats (like Omega-3s and olive oil), veggies and whole grains. The results show the Mediterranean diet (http://www.naturalnews.com/026382_m...) dramatically improved type 2 diabetes, and even eliminated the need for many people to take blood glucose regulating medication.
New Hope for Curing Degenerative Diseases...
The potential to heal once incurable degenerative diseases such as cancer or heart disease by regenerating cells that have failed or are about to fail is now within our grasp, thanks to the emergence of an exciting new field of medicine: regenerative medicine using adult stem cells.
Indeed, tissues such as heart muscle that were long thought to be non-renewable have now been shown to be regenerated through this novel therapy. By using adult stem cells, scientists have avoided the controversy that has stymied advanced embryonic stem cell research in the past. Adult stem cell therapy offers an unprecedented step forward in the history of medicine and the applications of this new form of regenerative medicine are potentially unlimited.

GH and DHEA - Should you seriously consider taking them? A look at the evidence...
In the medical field Hormone Replacement Therapy, especially in women, has not worked out the way they were originally hoping it would. In many cases it increased cancer rates and increased the risk of stroke and heart attacks, especially the hormones that are synthesized from animals, like Premarin.
In the nutritional world, 2 hormones derived from natural sources have had major benefits in some and mixed benefits in others. These 2 hormones are DHEA, a master adrenal hormone and GH, Growth Hormone, produced normally by the pituitary gland.
These 2 hormones produce all the other hormones we need, but tend to decline as we age. I have listed articles below for you to evaluate and consider. They are reliable sources and will give you the information you need to decide if they might be worth trying in your case.
Life extensionists use and recommend these products as a way to reverse age related issues associated with declining hormone levels found in aging adults.
I have also listed at the bottom a great source for product, if you decide you are interested. MBI, or Molecular Biologics has been around for over 25 years, and the products are formulated by biochemist Ned Jensen. I have worked with Ned and his company since my early days in the San Francisco Bay Area. Ned explains the value of taking these products, so be sure to click on the links and read his comments, too.

DHEA Restoration Therapy - Hormone Replacement Therapy...
It's no accident that youth is associated with high levels of hormones. Produced throughout the body, sex hormones are critical to maintaining vibrancy and good health. In recent decades, scientists have begun to understand the powerful benefits of replacing hormones lost to aging. However, there are serious questions about the safety of conventional hormone replacement therapy, which relies on hormones that are synthesized from animals (Premarin ®) or created in a lab (Provera ®). Most recently, the widespread prescribing of these two hormones among menopausal women has come under scientific scrutiny because of the increased risk of stroke and heart attack.
As an alternative, bioidentical hormone replacement therapy may be one of the best things aging people can do for themselves because of the wide-ranging benefits of bioidentical hormones on everything from the cardiovascular system to the aging brain and bones. What is required, however, is an approach that harnesses the wisdom of the body and relies on bioidentical hormones to replace those that decline with age.
In 1981, Life Extension introduced dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) in an article that described the multiple anti-aging effects of this steroid hormone. At the time, DHEA replacement therapy was almost unheard of. Today, however, DHEA replacement therapy has been studied extensively, and decreased DHEA levels have been implicated in heart disease, high cholesterol, depression, inflammation, immune disorders, schizophrenia, Alzheimer's disease, diabetes, HIV, and osteoporosis (Hauffa BP et al 1984; Valenti G 2002; Valenti G et al 2004).
Why DHEA May Be the Best-Validated Anti-Aging Supplement...
Recently, new side effects were announced for the popular osteoporosis drug known as Fosamax®. Apparently, many Fosamax® users find themselves with the troubling condition known as osteonecrosis of the jaw, in which the jaw bone essentially dies. Unfortunately, those experiencing osteoporosis are presented with little choice other than to take the drug and hope for the best. Now, strong evidence suggests that ensuring optimal levels of DHEA may help to slow bone loss and guard against the crippling effects of osteoporosis.
Studies of both men and women have demonstrated that low levels of DHEA are associated with bone loss through mechanisms related to altered mineral absorption and metabolism, as well as through inflammatory processes. In younger people, normal DHEA levels stimulate adequate production of a substance called insulin-like growth factor 1, which maintains new bone formation. Healthy DHEA levels also suppress production of interleukin-6, an inflammatory cytokine that causes bone breakdown (resorption), thus preventing bone loss. Decreasing DHEA levels are associated with diminished levels of insulin-like growth factor 1 and higher levels of interleukin-6, creating a situation in which bone loss exceeds new bone formation.
DHEA: A Master Hormone in Search of Its Identity...
At sixty-seven, Amy Woolfe found that even getting out of bed in the morning took almost as much energy as she had. "I've gotten used to feeling bad," she told me. "It becomes a way of life." Amy, a mild diabetic, was so tired that I considered diagnosing her condition as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. But, when I tried her out on DHEA, in less than thirty days she came back and told me, "I've never had so much energy in my life. I feel like I'm twenty-five again." That was three or four years ago, pretty early in my career as a doctor who prescribes hormones. I was amazed then; nowadays I hear similar stories from other men and women and am not surprised.
HUMAN GROWTH HORMONE TO CORRECT AGE-RELATED, ADULT GROWTH HORMONE DEFICIENCY...
Growth hormone, secreted by the pituitary gland, is a small protein-like hormone (peptide), similar to insulin. The HGH molecule is twice as large, however, making manufacture and administration more expensive. Commonly referred to as human growth hormone or "HGH," it is difficult to measure directly. HGH is secreted in very brief pulses during the early hours of sleep and remains in the circulation for only a few minutes. It is quickly bound to HGH receptors throughout the body, and some is taken into the liver and converted into somatomedin-C, another small peptide hormone (also known as insulin-like growth factor-one or IGF-I). IGF-1 is responsible for some but not all of the activity of growth hormone in the body. IGF-1 levels in the blood remain much more constant and can be measured in the laboratory as the most accurate indirect indicator of total daily HGH production. During adolescence, when growth is most rapid, production of HGH is very high. That is why it was named "growth hormone." Even after growth stops, however, growth hormone must continue to be present (at somewhat lower levels) throughout life to maintain physical and mental health and well-being. Tissue repair, healing, cell replacement, organ integrity, bone strength, brain function, enzyme production, integrity of hair, nails, skin and vital organs all require the ongoing availability of adequate growth hormone. After age 20, growth hormone production falls progressively and consistently at an average rate of about 14% per decade. By age 60, it is not uncommon to measure a growth hormone loss of 75% or more. Physical decline with age correlates directly with decreased secretion of growth hormone by the pituitary gland.
The Growing Impact of Growth Hormone...
Studies and real-life stories from everyday people show that growth hormone replacement therapy can have a dramatic effect on regaining youthful vitality, increasing muscle mass, improving immune function, bettering learning and memory, and lowering blood pressure.
On July 5, 1990, the New England Journal of Medicine published a clinical study on a drug that sent shock waves throughout the world. The drug-human growth hormone, HGH for short, or simply GH, a substance produced naturally by the pituitary gland-was hailed as a fountain of youth. Injections of synthetic human growth hormone had turned 12 men, ages 61 to 81, and with flabby, frail, fat-bulging bodies, into sleeker, stronger, younger selves.
After just six months of treatment, the men gained an average of 8.8 percent in lean body mass, and lost an average of 14.4 percent in fat mass. In addition, their skin thickened by 7.1 percent, the bone density of their lumbar spines increased by 1.6 percent, their livers grew by 19 percent, and their spleens by 17 percent. In language rarely used in conservative medical journals, Daniel Rudman, M.D., and his colleagues at the Medical College of Wisconsin, wrote, "The effects of six months of human growth hormone on lean body mass and adipose-tissue mass were equivalent in magnitude to the changes incurred during 10 to 20 years of aging."
