What ever happened to "First Do No Harm"?

A long long time ago, the Father of medicine formed the basic principals of what should be the focus of medical science today...
"Hippocrates (460-377 BC), a Greek physician, is traditionally acknowledged as the “Father of Medicine”. The Hippocratic Oath was formulated in the 4th century BC at the time when Hippocrates was establishing medicine as a science, raising it from its primitive state. Though the oath was not universally accepted by ancient physicians, medical practice began to conform to conditions envisaged by the document at the end of the ancient times."
Here is one of the original lines often quoted from that oath... "I will apply dietetic measures for the benefit of the sick according to my ability and judgment; I will keep them from harm and injustice."

Originally, doctors taught good nutrition, used herbal medicine, and felt that doing no harm was of primary importance above all things. Boy, have things changed.

For many years now, doctors have been reported as the 3rd leading cause of death in America, according to the AMA's own annual reports, second only to heart disease and cancer.

This is where I get my passion to share natural ways to improve one's health that usually also result in side benefits rather than side effects.
I agree with people like Thomas Edison who was quoted as saying...
"The doctor of the future will prescribe no drugs, but will interest his patients in the care and nutrition of the human frame and in the cause and prevention of disease."
Voltaire also may have been on to something when he said...
"Doctors give drugs of which they know little, into bodies of which they know less, for diseases of which they know nothing at all."

This week I had 1 question that I can answer here on HealthBlogger...

Question from L. W. - Prineville, OR...

Do you have any recommendations for SEVERE allergies? My husband just got hammered this weekend to the point he couldn't go out of the house yesterday without sneezing and blowing his head off. He’s absolutely miserable. Never has had it this bad before. Any histamine help out there? Thoughts?

Answer... Your husband most likely is allergic to a tree as they bloom first, next comes grasses and flowers. Many people here have problems with juniper which produces a fine yellow dust when it blooms. Either way, the best approach naturally is to block the response and then use homeopathic antigen therapy. See link below...http://www.cwiechert.com/allergies.html

Possible 75% cancer mortality reduction with Vitamin D...
In a new study, researchers at the Moores Cancer Center and Department of Family and Preventive Medicine, UC San Diego used a complex computer prediction model to determine that intake of vitamin D3 and calcium would prevent 58,000 new cases of breast cancer and 49,000 new cases of colorectal cancer annually in the US and Canada. The researchers model also predicted that 75% of deaths from these cancers could be prevented with adequate intake of vitamin D3 and calcium. Dr. Cedric Garland, UCSD School of Medicine, lead researcher on the study discusses the implications of this finding and the proposed actions.

Drink Green Tea For Healthy Teeth And Gums...
With origins dating back over 4,000 years, green tea has long been a popular beverage in Asian culture, and is increasingly gaining popularity in the United States. And while ancient Chinese and Japanese medicine believed green tea consumption could cure disease and heal wounds, recent scientific studies are beginning to establish the potential health benefits of drinking green tea, especially in weight loss, heart health, and cancer prevention.

Dispel the Myths: High Cholesterol is Not to Blame for Heart Disease ...
(NaturalNews) Most people react to being told they have high cholesterol in the same way they would if they were told they have cancer. Somehow the idea of having high cholesterol can strike deep fear into the heart of a person. After all, doesn't a high cholesterol reading mean you are a walking heart attack waiting to happen? That's what we've been told for decades by the media and the medical profession, but more recently evidence is coming to light that says high cholesterol may not be an accurate predictor of heart attack. This may come as a shock to anyone who has followed the idea that lowering your cholesterol will prevent heart disease. In fact, such ideas prevent people from looking at the big picture: there are many risk factors associated with heart disease, and putting all of the blame on cholesterol causes people to ignore other more prevalent factors.

A Big Fat Fib: Low-Fat is Not the Answer ...
(NaturalNews) It all started a few decades ago, when well-known health experts began recommending that people eliminate fat from their diets. A lot of people jumped on the no-fat train because some studies at the time seemed to point to fat as the villain of our modern diet. It soon became obvious to health professionals that completely eliminating fat was not any kind of solution. First of all, most people couldn`t stay on this type of extreme diet for any length of time. Secondly, health problems like cancer, infection, fatigue and depression ran rampant when fat was eliminated.

Vitamin K and prostate cancer – study supports benefits...
An improved vitamin K2 status may reduce the risk of prostate cancer, suggest results from German scientists that build the science linking the vitamin to improved prostate health.
Scientists from the German Cancer Research Center report that an improved status of the vitamin was linked to a lower risk of both advanced-stage prostate cancer and high-grade prostate cancer.

Resveratrol is "Nature's Medicine" for Cancer, Heart Disease and Much More ...
(NaturalNews) Just how good is resveratrol at preventing cancer and heart disease? It's so good that drug companies are trying to mimic its molecules in order to claim they're "creating" a new drug to prevent heart disease. But this is Mother Nature's miracle drug -- only it's not a drug. It's a molecule synthesized by plants for protecting themselves! And it turns out the same molecule can protect you from cancer, heart disease and a whole lot more. I wanted you to read about the amazing benefits of resveratrol, so I put together this collection of quotes from top authors in the field. Read it to learn the truth about resveratrol that the drug companies and the FDA hope you never find out...

Reversing Tooth Decay...
Teeth are able to heal themselves. That's how traditional cultures such as the Inuit can wear their teeth down to the pulp due to chewing leather and sand-covered dried fish, yet still have an exceptionally low rate of tooth decay. It's also how the African Wakamba tribe can file their front teeth into sharp points without causing decay. Both cultures lost their resistance to tooth decay after adopting nutrient-poor Western foods such as white flour and sugar.
In a study with dogs... When a diet of high calcifying qualities, ie., one rich in vitamin D, calcium and phosphorus was given to the dogs during the period of attrition, the new secondary dentine laid down was abundant and well formed whether the original structure of the teeth was good or bad. On the other hand, a diet rich in cereals and poor in vitamin D resulted in the production of secondary dentine either small in amount or poorly calcified, and this happened even if the primary dentine was well formed.

Pomegranate’s anti-inflammatory effects strengthened...
A polyphenol-rich pomegranate extract may reduce inflammation, and positively effect chronic disease risk, according to results of a new cell study from the US.
Findings published in the open access Journal of Inflammation suggest that a polyphenol-rich pomegranate fruit extract (POMx) acts by inhibiting the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines at a gene expression level.
“Our’s is the first report that shows POMx inhibits the inflammatory activity of activated human mast cells [known to play a central role in the inflammatory process] like KU812 cells,” wrote the researchers from the University of South Carolina and Case Western Reserve University.
“POMx or POMx-derived compounds may be of value for the treatment of inflammatory diseases in which mast cells play an active role,” they added.

Protect Yourself from MSG and Aspartame Excitotoxicity ...
(NaturalNews) The first line of defense against the two most commonly used and pernicious food additives, MSG and aspartame, is avoidance. However, complete avoidance is not possible for everyone all the time. MSG, monosodium glutamate, has been disguised with several different names. Aspartame or its primary constituent, aspartic acid, along with disguised variations of MSG, have even shown up in food products or supplements sold in health food stores!Eating out, you're sure to be taking in some MSG. Even if the restaurant doesn't add MSG to the food it prepares, MSG or disguised variations are sure to be within the foods purchased by the restaurant. Soups, gravies, and all liquids with MSG or aspartame will ensure a more rapid overload of excitotoxins than other forms of tainted foods. Even worse maybe, now it has been disclosed that many crops are being sprayed, some for several years, with the essential ingredient of MSG, processed free glutamate. So a second line of defense is certainly in order.

Hypothyroidism In Women Associated With Liver Cancer...
Women with a history of hypothyroidism face a significantly higher risk of developing liver cancer, according to a new study.
Hypothyroidism is the most common thyroid disorder among U.S. adults, affecting between 8 and 12 percent of the U.S. population, and more women than men. The condition can cause hyperlipidemia and weight gain and may play a role in the development of nonalcoholic steatohepatitis which can progress to more severe liver disease. Studies have also suggested a clinical association between hypothyroidism and hepatitis C, which is contributing to the country’s rising rate of liver cancer.

B6 may slash colorectal cancer risk: Harvard study...
Increased intake of vitamin B6 from dietary and supplements may reduce the risk of colorectal cancer by over 50 per cent, suggests a new study.
Almost 15,000 people took part in the study, which reported that increased blood levels of the vitamin’s active form, pyridoxal 5'-phosphate (PLP), were significantly associated with a reduced risk of colorectal cancer, according to findings published in the journal Cancer Epidemiology Biomarkers & Prevention.
The study follows similar findings from Scotland-based researchers published in the same journal last year. Researchers from the University of Edinburgh, Western General Hospital (Edinburgh) and the University of Aberdeen, reported that increased intakes of vitamin B6 from dietary and supplements may reduce the risk of colorectal cancer by over 20 per cent (Cancer Epidemiol Biomarkers Prev., Vol. 17, pp. 171-182).
