FRIDAY, July 20 (HealthDay News) -- A low-carbohydrate diet helps people with a condition called metabolic syndrome, a collection of serious risk factors found in some obese individuals. Eating a low-carb diet improves the hormonal signaling involved in obesity and improves the sense of fullness, allowing weight loss, according to study leader Matthew R. Hayes, a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Pennsylvania.

Eating blueberries slashes colon cancer risk by 57 percent, animal study finds...
A compound found in blueberries shows promise of preventing colon cancer, according to a new study. Scientists at Rutgers University and the U.S. Department of Agriculture conducted a joint study on animals, and found that the compound -- called pterostilbene -- lessened pre-cancerous lesions and inhibited genes involved in inflammation. Researchers presented the study at the American Chemical Society's annual meeting in March.

Study: Obesity is 'socially contagious' ...
If your friends and family get fat, chances are you will too, researchers report in a startling new study that suggests obesity is "socially contagious" and can spread easily from person to person.
The study found a person's chances of becoming obese went up 57 percent if a friend did, 40 percent if a sibling did and 37 percent if a spouse did. In the closest friendships, the risk almost tripled.

Soft drinks - heart disease study sparks reaction...
24/07/2007 - Drinking more than one soft drink a day is associated with a 50 per cent increase risk in metabolic syndrome, says a new study from the US. And writing in the journal Circulation: Journal of the American Heart Association, lead author Ramachandran Vasan, from Boston University School of Medicine, states that it made no difference if the drinks were low-calorie or regular."We were struck by the fact that it didn't matter whether it was a diet or regular soda that participants consumed, the association with increased risk was present," said Vasan. "In those who drink one or more soft drinks daily, there was an association of an increased risk of developing the metabolic syndrome."
