The Future of Preventative Medicine is here NOW, using Nutrigenomics, Epigenetics, and compounds called Nutraceuticals...

For over 35 years I have been studying and consulting in the alternative health world.  In those days, the thinking was that we inherit genes from our parents that ultimately end up determining what diseases we will most likely get as we age and grow old.
In the last decade as we have decoded the genome, we now know that some 25 to 30 thousand genes that make up our body can be expressed by our environment in such ways as to alter your genetic destiny.  Mae West said it well...  "You're never too old to become younger."

Translated another way, we are no longer the victim of our parents genetic patterns, with no power to alter our state of health as we age.
How we think and the substances we take into our body, such as the air we breathe, the food we eat, and the water we drink, are all part of this environment that can alter our genes.  This process can either bring us ideal health or chronic disease.
While we cannot control all the environmental processes involved in this biological dance, we can have a dramatic effect on most of them.

Change your lifestyle and you change your genes...

Let's start with thought - we are what we think... In medicine, we call this the placebo or nocebo effect.

Now lets look into my field, Nutrigenomics...  How we can alter our health by changing what you eat and what nutraceuticals you take.

Today I want to focus on specific gene groups that we can alter with a low refined carb diet and specific nutraceuticals called phytonutrients.

The Story of Gene Expression
DAF2, DAF16, or the FOXo gene -  DAF2, is called The Grimm Reaper gene. It controls insulin in our bodies and tells our body to hurry up and age because we are past child bearing years and are no longer needed biologically.  Lower the function of this gene and you trigger a second gene called DAF16 or in humans, the FOXo gene, which doubled the life span of animals in recent studies.
High levels of insulin from a high carbohydrate diet turns the Grimm Reaper Gene on and ages us quicker.
Eating a low carb diet triggers the DAF16 or FOXo gene, which in turn triggers youthfulness and the potential to double and even triple lifespans in animals. It literally turned older worms into teenagers.  These same genes are found in humans, and have the same effect.

Cut the carbohydrate calories in your diet by 60%, triple the density of vitamins and minerals at the same time, and you can double lifespans.

SIRT1 - The Longevity Gene - This gene is turned on by caloric restriction and Stilbene compounds like Resveratrol and Pterostilbene found in red wine, blue berries, and especially in the famous anti-aging herb, Ho Shou Wu. Compounds like these have been shown to effect 12 mechanisms of action that combat 5 major diseases as well as the aging process itself.

Nrft2 - The master regulator of survival genes, oxidative stress, and inflammation.  Turn this gene on and you increase the body's production of antioxidant enzymes, like glutathione, catalase, and SOD, dramatically.   You also trigger anti - inflammatory genes and the over production of fibrotic material in the body.

I have just highlighted a few of the things we are doing with the right mind set and Nutrigenomics.
Here are some resources to purchase products that accomplish the benefits above.

To turn down the Grimm Reaper gene and increase the expression of FOXo, change your diet to a Paleo or a low glycemic diet, and take Reishi Mushroom.

To turn on SIRT1, The Longevity Gene, consider any of these nutraceuticals...
Resveratrol
Pterostilbene
Ho Shu Wu / Fo Ti

To turn on Nrft2 - The master regulator of survival genes, oxidative stress, and inflammation, consider taking...
Protandim or
Curcumin and Sulforaphane
