Let's make HealthBlogger Interactive...

Starting this week I would like to make HealthBlogger interactive with you commenting and or asking questions that you would like me to address on my blog. We can do this via e-mail. Just send me small comments or questions. Let's give it a try. You can be a a part of my process in reporting news and commentary on health, wellness, and anti-aging.

I am envisioning a sort of community type participation. I hope to hear from you. Please include your name or initials along with your state and/or country and I will post them with your question/comment.

Send to cww@cwiechert.com

Now for this week. I have supplied more evidence that Alzheimer's disease may really be a form of Diabetes. This is important as it indicates that a low glycemic diet may be the best way to prevent this disease from a dietary prospective.

Pre-Diabetes is rampant and is now called Hyperinsulinemia, or Syndrome X. It is a precursor to many diseases Americans suffer with, especially the risk of Heart Disease.

You all know by now how much I like Alpha Lipoic Acid and L-Carnitine as an anti-aging nutracuetical. Now there is evidence that L-Carnitine may protect you from liver cancer as well.

There is a lot of evidence that drinking red wine and eating a higher protein diet is beneficial health wise and I have included 2 studies this week that support that. Even if you are a vegetarian, there are ways to eat a high protein diet and rely less on high glycemic foods.

Also included this week are studies on vitamin D and it's role in multiple sclerosis and prostate cancer, as well as vitamin K2 for heart health, especially in postmenopausal women. And lastly, why Beta Carotene, maligned in a population-based study reporting concerns over beta-carotene and other carotenoids and lung cancer in smokers, was based on invalid or bad science. By the way, a simple way to get all these important nutrients in a complete multi is in NSI Synergy CardioLift® Multi-Vitamin, it's an excellent product.

Enjoy the articles and apply the research and remember...

More evidence links diabetes to Alzheimer's risk...
You've heard that diabetes hurts your heart, your eyes, your kidneys. New research indicates a more ominous link:
That diabetes increases the risk of getting Alzheimer's disease and may speed dementia once it strikes. Doctors long suspected diabetes damaged blood vessels that supply the brain. It now seems even more insidious, that the damage may start before someone is diagnosed with full-blown diabetes, back when the body is gradually losing its ability to regulate blood sugar.
In fact, the lines are blurring between what specialists call "vascular dementia" and scarier classic Alzheimer's disease. Whatever it's labeled, there's reason enough to safeguard your brain by fighting diabetes and heart-related risks.

'Pre-diabetics' Face Heightened Risk Of Heart Disease...
ScienceDaily (Mar. 9, 2009) — Older adults who have impaired glucose tolerance but who are not considered diabetic are at elevated risk for heart disease and may benefit from preventive therapies, according to a new study conducted by researchers at Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University. Diabetes becomes increasingly common with age. An estimated 37 million Americans over the age of 65 have diabetes, almost one-quarter of that population. Another 20 to 30 percent of seniors, an estimated 7.5 to 11.1 million, are not clinically diabetic but have impaired glucose tolerance, which is considered a form of "pre-diabetes."

Long-term L-carnitine supplementation prevents development of liver cancer...
A study will be published on March 21, 2009 in World Journal of Gastroenterology addresses the question. A research group in King Saud University, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia investigated, for the first time, the role of carnitine, a naturally occurring compound that is synthesized mainly in the liver, during the development of hepatocarcinogenesis. Authors of the study reported that carnitine deficiency is a risk factor and should be viewed as a mechanism in hepatic carcinogenesis, and that long-term L-carnitine supplementation prevents the development of liver cancer. Therefore, carnitine supplementation alone or in combination with other natural chemopreventive compounds could be used to prevent, slow or reverse the occurrence of liver cancer.

Increase Complete Protein and Lose Weight ...
(NaturalNews) All the rave reviews of fruits and vegetables lately have captured our attention. Many people have made significant changes in their diets to accommodate seven to nine serving of these healing superstars. Some have had difficulty fitting all these servings into their diets, and have cut back on primary protein sources to make room for them while trying to watch their weight. This may not be the best decision because recent research has shown that getting a higher percentage of calories from protein helps the body burn fat more efficiently. Complete proteins are especially important because they form the structure and integrity of every part of the body.

Drink Red Wine and Keep Breasts, Livers and Brains Healthy ...
(NaturalNews) Red wine is turning out to be a superfood. Although many health conscious people have opted to get isolated grape compounds in capsule form, recent research is showing that the best way is to drink red wine. That's because red wine contains the entire grape polyphenol group of nutrients, a group that has been shown to work much better synergistically. In fact, newly released research is showing that breast tumor growth and metastasis to bone and liver are inhibited by the complete grape polyphenol complex.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids Reduce Risk Of Advanced Prostate Cancer...
ScienceDaily (Mar. 25, 2009) — Omega-3 fatty acids appear protective against advanced prostate cancer, and this effect may be modified by a genetic variant in the COX-2 gene, according to a report in Clinical Cancer Research, a journal of the American Association for Cancer Research. "Previous research has shown protection against prostate cancer, but this is one of the first studies to show protection against advanced prostate cancer and interaction with COX-2," said John S. Witte, Ph.D., professor of epidemiology and biostatistics at the University of California San Francisco.

Physical Activity Improves Longevity: It is Never Too Late to Start ...
(NaturalNews) A Swedish study recently published in the British Medical Journal has given those who have reached or passed middle age hope and encouragement to begin a new healthy lifestyle, having discovered that starting a solid exercise regime after the age of 50 can raise one's level of longevity to that of those who have been exercising regularly all along.

Multiple Sclerosis Caused by Vitamin D Deficiency ...
(NaturalNews) Researchers from Oxford University and the University of British Columbia have discovered that Vitamin D deficiency affects a section of the human genome already linked with multiple sclerosis (MS) risk, adding further weight to theories that this vitamin deficiency might play a role in development of the disease."Here we show that the main environmental risk candidate -- vitamin D -- and the main gene region are directly linked and interact," said co-author George Ebers.

Prostate Cancer Death Risk Linked to Vitamin D...
Elevated serum levels of vitamin D may be associated with a reduced risk of death from prostate cancer, researchers reported in the British Journal of Cancer (2009;100;450-454).
In a study of 160 prostate cancer patients, those with medium and high serum levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D (calcidiol) were at 67% and 84% decreased risk of death from prostate cancer, respectively, compared with patients who had a low level. Among the 97 men receiving hormone therapy, medium and high calcidiol levels were associated with 82% and 91% decreased risk. Medium and high calcidiol levels were defined as 50-80 and greater than 80 nmol/L, respectively.

Vitamin K2 Supports Heart Health...
Vitamin K2 may decrease the risk of developing coronary heart disease in postmenopausal women, a new study has found.
Researchers evaluated data from 16,057 postmenopausal women, aged between 49 and 70. None of the women had cardiovascular disease at the start of the study. Dietary intakes were determined using a food frequency questionnaire.
After more than eight years of follow up, researchers observed an association between a higher consumption of natural vitamin K2, particularly menaquinone-7, -8, and -9, and a significantly reduced prevalence of coronary heart disease. For every 10-microgram increase in the amount of vitamin K2 consumed, there was a 9 percent reduction in the risk of developing coronary heart disease (CHD).

Beta-carotene, lung cancer study flawed: Experts...
A population-based study reporting concerns over beta-carotene and other carotenoids and lung cancer in smokers was based on invalid methodology, questionable statistical evaluations, and speculative explanations, says a German professor.
Reacting to the results of a population-based study that reported long-term supplementation with beta-carotene may increase a smoker’s risk of lung cancer, Prof. Hans Konrad Biesalski from the Institute for Biological Chemistry and Nutrition at the University of Hohenheim said: “The obvious weakness of this study lies in its methodology.”

Eat, drink, be optimistic, exercise and health will follow...

Today my blog focuses on foods, activities, drinks, and attitudes that can have a very positive effect on your health and well being.

While I try to eat and drink the right things daily, I still believe supplementation is critical to longevity and altering the process of chronic disease. I drink a lot of green tea and 2 glasses of red wine daily, but I also take their phytonutrients in supplement form.

While Spirulina is a great food all by itself, containing almost every nutrient known to man, I add 2,000 mgs of Spirulina to many of my own vitamin formulations, which makes them superior to the competition at a comparative price. Check out WOMEN'S BASIC + and MEN'S BASIC + which cost about $28.00 a Month.

I have recommended oral chelation with EDTA for a long time as a way to keep your arteries clean and for the removal of heavy metals. Learn from an expert why you might want to consider taking it, if you have any concerns about heart disease.

Cinnamon has been clinically proven to improve blood sugar levels and can be very helpful for people with type 2 diabetes. That's why I include it as one of the nutrients in my formula called Blood Sugar Health and in my complete multi for blood sugar support called, GLUCO VIT-MIN.

Enjoy today's articles and studies and remember...

Brussels Sprouts Defend against All Types of Cancer...
(NaturalNews) Plant phytonutrients found in Brussels sprouts boost the body`s natural defense systems to protect against cancer and other diseases. Brussels sprouts and other cruciferous vegetables disarm cancer causing chemicals and encourage the body`s detoxification enzymes.Evidence in the Netherlands suggests that Brussels sprouts keep the body free from cancer by promoting healthy DNA. DNA is responsible for cell division in the body. When DNA gets damaged, cells may begin to replicate much more rapidly than normal, which can cause a cancerous tumor to begin to form. Several studies reveal that Brussels sprouts have the ability to help protect DNA from damage.

Chemists Shed Light On Health Benefits Of Garlic...
ScienceDaily (Jan. 31, 2009) — A Queen's-led team has discovered the reason why garlic is so good for us. Researchers have widely believed that the organic compound, allicin – which gives garlic its aroma and flavour – acts as the world's most powerful antioxidant. But until now it hasn't been clear how allicin works, or how it stacks up compared to more common antioxidants such as Vitamin E and coenzyme Q10, which stop the damaging effects of radicals.

Women Double Fruit, Veggie Intake With Switch To Mediterranean Diet Plan...
ScienceDaily (Dec. 31, 2008) — In a new study led by the University of Michigan Health System, women more than doubled their fruit and vegetable intakes and dramatically increased their consumption of "good" fats when they were counseled by registered dietitians and provided with a list of guidelines on the amount of certain foods they should eat each day.

Fat linked to vitamin deficiency...
Teenage girls and young women who are overweight have a higher chance of being deficient in vitamin D, scientists have found in research that strengthens the case for wider use of supplements. The research shows that even in a sunshine-rich climate similar to Sydney's it is possible for young people to lack the essential vitamin, which the body usually produces from sun exposure. Using scans to measure the women's body fat - not just their weight - the scientists, from the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, found a strong link between excessive body fat and low vitamin D levels.

Vigorous Exercise May Help Prevent Vision Loss...
ScienceDaily (Feb. 14, 2009) — There’s another reason to dust off those running shoes. Vigorous exercise may help prevent vision loss, according to a pair of studies from the U.S. Department of Energy’s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. The studies tracked approximately 41,000 runners for more than seven years, and found that running reduced the risk of both cataracts and age-related macular degeneration.

EDTA Chelation - The Real "Miracle" Therapy for Vascular Disease...
EDTA chelation is a therapy by which repeated administrations of a weak synthetic amino acid (EDTA, ethylenediamine tetra-acetic acid) gradually reduce atherosclerotic plaque and other mineral deposits throughout the cardiovascular system by literally dissolving them away.
EDTA chelation has frequently been compared to a "Roto-Rooter" in the cardiovascular system, because it removes plaque and returns the arterial system to a smooth, healthy, pre-atherosclerotic state. A better metaphor might be "Liquid-Plumr," because, where Roto-Rooter violently scrapes deposits off the interior surfaces of your plumbing with a rapidly rotating blade, Liquid-Plumr simply dissolves them away.
Roto-Rooter is a far better metaphor for conventional medical treatments for heart disease, all of which are closely tied to the concept of the cardiovascular system as plumbing. When a pipe/artery gets clogged, simply ream it out or flatten the deposits (angioplasty). If that doesn't work, just cut away the bad section(s) and replace it (them) with a new piece of pipe (coronary artery bypass graft, or CABG). It's the same basic strategy older cities use for replacing their century-old water mains. And we know how successful that is!

Cinnamon Benefits Type 2 Diabetics...
The spice cinnamon improves blood glucose and reduces triglycerides, total cholesterol, and LDL, the bad cholesterol, in patients with type 2 diabetes according to a recent study in Diabetes Care. Included in the 40-day study were 60,type 2 diabetes patients, (30 men and 30 women) with an average age of52 years. The subjects were divided randomly into six groups. Group one consumed one gram of cinnamon daily, group two consumed 3 grams and group three consumed six grams. Groups four, five, and six were given placebo capsules corresponding to the number of capsules consumed inthe three cinnamon-treated groups. After 40 days, all three cinnamon dosages reduced the mean fasting serum glucose by 18-29 percent, triglycerides by 23-30 percent, LDL cholesterol by 7-27 percent, and total cholesterol by 12-26 percent. The placebo groups didnot experience any significant benefits, indicating it was the cinnamon that achieved the positive results.

Add Spirulina to Your Diet and Replace those Expensive Supplements...
(NaturalNews) Spirulina is considered one of nature's most perfect foods because it performs such a broad spectrum of activities in the body. Its nutritional profile shows it can replace many more expensive supplements, and its research profile reveals its dedication to promoting good health. Several animal studies have documented the ability of spirulina to arrest the development of cancer progression, reduce risk of cancer initiation, and boost the immune system. Spirulina has anti-viral and anti-allergic effects, and is a natural antihistamine. Recently, spirulina has been found effective at lowering the immune response when it has become overactive, a function that may make it effective against autoimmune diseases such as multiple sclerosis.

Eat More Chocolate for Health ...
(NaturalNews) Chocolate has been a favorite food of people since it was first discovered. A joke among chocolate lovers is that it is an essential nutrient. But aside from a velvety texture and indescribable taste, is chocolate good for you? Research has shown that raw, dark cocoa is. Chocolate in assorted candies or bars has been processed. It has been fermented and sweetened with unhealthy sugars. It has preservatives and other added chemicals. It isn`t good for you at all, unlike raw, dark, healthy chocolate.

Drinking Coffee Reduces Risk of Stroke, Cancer and Dementia ...
(NaturalNews) It's a pleasant surprise when something questionable turns out to be full of health benefits. First chocolate was found to prevent heart disease. Then red wine was shown to increase overall longevity. Now the spotlight is on coffee. Newly released studies reveal that coffee drinking lowers risk of stroke, cancer, Alzheimer's disease, and dementia. It even improves social skills and depressive symptoms. Other recent research has shown that drinking coffee reduces the risk of diabetes.

Green, Black Tea Can Reduce Stroke Risk, Research Suggests...
ScienceDaily (Mar. 4, 2009) — Drinking at least three cups of green or black tea a day can significantly reduce the risk of stroke, a new UCLA study has found. And the more you drink, the better your odds of staving off a stroke.

Better cheer up: Optimism is key to longevity - Study: Happy folks live longer, healthier lives than gloomy counterparts...
Optimists live longer, healthier lives than pessimists, U.S. researchers said on Thursday in a study that may give pessimists one more reason to grumble.
Researchers at University of Pittsburgh looked at rates of death and chronic health conditions among participants of the Women’s Health Initiative study, which has followed more than 100,000 women ages 50 and over since 1994. Women who were optimistic — those who expect good rather than bad things to happen — were 14 percent less likely to die from any cause than pessimists and 30 percent less likely to die from heart disease after eight years of follow up in the study.

Eggs are the Answer, Not the Enemy...
(NaturalNews) For years we've been listening to top health experts advising us to eliminate eggs from our diet. At the very most, they say, eat only three eggs a week. Any more would simply wreak havoc on your cholesterol levels. And of course all of this is starkly animated in television commercials showing regular egg consumers collapsing of violent heart attacks in the street. Does that sound like cookie-cutter propaganda to you? There is some logic behind these claims: eggs contain cholesterol so they must surely raise cholesterol levels. This concept, however, is flawed and research is proving it to be so.

The Emperor's Guard: Green Tea Protects the Heart ...
(NaturalNews) Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) views the heart as the master of the body and the emperor of the organ networks. It generates chi, the vital energy of the body, and thus is the root of all life1. Without a healthy heart, the body is fragile and stale. While many of us know that heart disease is rampant in the United States, we remain largely unaware of a powerful tool in its prevention: green tea. The heart protective effects of green tea can be attributed mainly to its antioxidant and anti-obesity properties, while other mechanisms play supporting roles. Each of these mechanisms will be discussed below in terms of TCM as well as Western medicine.

Could cancer be caused by a fungus - One Oncologist thinks so...

Could the overuse of antibiotics be contributing to the rise in cancer around the world?

Have you heard of Candida and did you know that at least one cancer expert and oncologist thinks there is a connection between this fungal disease and cancer?

I am offering this information to anyone seeking an answer to the possible cause and perhaps a way to treat it naturally without Chemo or Radiation.

I don't pretend to know if this will prove to be the right cause or treatment approach in the future. Only time will tell. I am merely making it available to anyone and everyone who may be dealing with it or knows someone that may have the disease and is looking for answers.

My recommendation is to watch the 45 minute video and look at the other links and decide for yourself if you think it has merit.

Education leads to insight and insight can then lead to action.

I hope you find this research beneficial and remember...

Video - Cancer breakthrough - Cancer is a Fungus - Candida...
Know the Cause Show - Doug Kaufmann - Moderator -45 mins
“Doug Kaufmann has become one of the most influential voices in natural health.”
A MUST SEE for everyone who believes that cancer is a mysterious disease!
Until 2007, I didn't know Italian cancer specialist, Tullio Simoncini, M.D., nor did he know me. Seemingly worlds apart, we were on identical paths; unlike millions of cancer researchers before us, we discovered the cause of cancer. Then God placed us together and a most amazing interview ensued. Watch now as this millennium's most important cancer discovery is told. Then please send it to loved ones who need this information. Tell everyone you know to sign up for our free newsletter, because the information is simply too important to be without the next time you find yourself in a hospital or doctor's office.

SODIUM BICARBONATE...
For the past 50 or so years, orthodox treatment has more or less stayed the same with a very poor cure rate. Why? They only have Chemotherapy, Radiation, or Surgery and maybe a combination of the three to work with. By now you would think that cutting out a cancer tumor for a cure would be known as impossible since the tumor is just the symptom and not the cause. It is very important to get at the cause and most institutions are happy with removing the symptom and somehow weave into the mix the chemo or radiation to round out the treatment plan. With this routine there is less than a 2% "cure" rate. If they can slow the progress down for 5 years, it is considered a cure. Really, how could it be a cure if only the symptom is removed and the body is poisoned or radiated after the surgery? Sure, there are different techniques in the surgical suits being tried each day. After a work-up before surgery, it is determined how much of one's body should be removed never or almost never taking into consideration how he will live with what remains behind. To this, another attack will take place with a poison (chemotherapy) being infused which is another obstacle for the patient to overcome or maybe a series of powerful radiation treatments will be considered. A relatively strong patient is soon turned into a weak wimp too sick to get out of his own way. Is this the way a person should go on living? Is this progress?

Breast Cancer Conquered Without Toxic Drugs...
The recent discovery of an Italian oncologist and research scientist, Dr. Tullio Simoncini of Rome, enabled him to develop a procedure that produces spectacular results in treating breast cancer.
Combined with another protocol developed at an oncological clinic in Oklahoma, the treatment takes advantage of recent advances in cancer research, and of the discovery of Dr. Simoncini. He calls the medical community's attention to the fact that every cancer cell has a fungus within that is driving the cell's fermentation-based metabolism. He believes that in the case of cancer, "we are looking at a very sick cell within which lives a very healthy microbe". Dr. Simoncini also discovered that pharmaceutical-grade sodium bicarbonate is a superb fungus killer. He has proven his theory by eliminating tumors in hundreds of cancer patients, some of them terminal cases.

Anti-fungal Drug May Help Treat Cancer, Say Scientists at UC Santa Barbara ...
Santa Barbara, Calif.) – A drug that has been used for 40 years for the treatment of skin fungus has been found to be a possible cancer treatment, according to an international team of scientists.
Leslie Wilson, professor of biochemistry and pharmacology at the University of California, Santa Barbara, said that the anti-fungal drug, griseofulvin, has been shown to inhibit the growth of cancer cells in his laboratory. The results are published in today's online edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

What is Candida?...
Candida is controversial. The medical profession denies its existence, except in very limited cases, making it very difficult (probably impossible) to get a medical diagnosis of Candida even when an overgrowth has been confirmed by a laboratory test. Despite this situation, public awareness of Candida has continued to grow, helped no doubt by the long list of celebrities who, quite unperturbed by its lack of medical status, assert that they have had it.
Candida is the popular term for candidiasis (candida overgrowth) - a condition first identified by American physicians in the 1970s. Moderate amounts of candida live in every one of us without causing any harm, but when given free rein to grow unchecked, e.g. by wiping out the surrounding bacteria with broad-spectrum antibiotics, Candida can change into its fungal form and spore through the intestinal wall into the rest of the body. Once through, it rampages around the body producing a multitude of symptoms.

Read about the powerful therapies that can rebuild your health and reverse age accumulated damage...

There is a lot here this week to watch and read, but it will be worth it I promise, that is if you value your health and want to live a long healthy life.

I have been recommending Nattokinase for a long time for it's amazing ability to be a natural clot buster with no know side effects. Here I have included research that it may remove or dissolve the protein plaques associated with Alzheimer's disease. Personally I believe Serrapeptase does as well, but no study has proved it yet. I take both as Serrapeptase removes fibrous tissue or what is called scar tissue.

If you are taking a statin drug, here is another reason to think twice about it's risk reward level.

The experts are now recommending that vitamin D3 levels should be at the higher level when you get your blood tested. 50 - 60 ng/mL of 25(OH) is the optimal level. If you are 20 ng/mL or below, you are increasing your risk of developing all chronic diseases. Read for yourself and do watch Dr. Cannell's video.

K2 - (menaquinones 7), found in fermented natto and eaten by the Japanese, may be the reason they have such low heart disease, with it's ability to remove calcium deposits from your arteries and making your bones stronger. Studies suggest supplements are the best way to get this amazing nutrient.

And lastly, see why you should cut down your intake of potato chips and french fries, and watch a simple video explanation on Why Humans Age. This video explains why Resveratrol and IP6 should be a part of your anti-aging regime.

Enjoy the information and remember...

Natto enzyme may reduce Alzheimer’s risk: Study...
Nattokinase, an enzyme extracted from fermented soy, may prevent the build up of certain plaques in the brain linked to Alzheimer’s, suggests new research from Taiwan.
The enzyme was found to be able to degrade amyloid fibrils that contribute to the formation of amyloid plaque that characterize Alzheimer’s disease, according to results of a lab study published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry.
“The discovery of an enzyme which can be safely taken orally and can degrade amyloid fibrils could be very useful in the therapy of amyloid-related diseases,” wrote the researchers from Taiwan’s Institute of Biological Chemistry, Academia Sinica, and the National Taiwan University.

Another Blow to Magic Bullet Drugs: Statins Impair Brains ...
(NaturalNews) Statin drugs can reduce soaring cholesterol levels, according to countless ads touting these supposed "wonder" drugs, that means they are brimming with health benefits because they lower the risk of cardiovascular disease. The problem is a host of side effects from eye problems and muscle pain to heart arrhythmias and liver disorders have been linked to these widely prescribed medications. Now comes research by an Iowa State University scientist that strongly suggests statins also could be robbing brains of thinking power and memory by doing exactly what they are supposed to do -- reduce cholesterol.

Brain Starvation As We Age Appears To Trigger Alzheimer's: Improving Blood Flow To Brain Is Preventive Strategy...
ScienceDaily (Dec. 28, 2008) — A slow, chronic starvation of the brain as we age appears to be one of the major triggers of a biochemical process that causes some forms of Alzheimer's disease.
A new study from Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine has found when the brain doesn't get enough sugar glucose -- as might occur when cardiovascular disease restricts blood flow in arteries to the brain -- a process is launched that ultimately produces the sticky clumps of protein that appear to be a cause of Alzheimer's.

Adequate intake of vitamin D can prevent diabetes...
Diabetes can be prevented, and the disease's complications for those diagnosed with it reduced, through adequate intake of vitamin D, says a report. "Vitamin D has widespread benefits for our health and certain chronic diseases in particular. This article further substantiates the role of this nutrient in the prevention and management of glucose intolerance and diabetes," said Sue Penckofer, Ph.D., R.N., study co-author and professor, Loyola University Chicago Marcella Niehoff School of Nursing.

Vitamin K2, but not K1, effective for heart health benefits: Study...
Increased intakes of vitamin K2, but not vitamin K1, may decrease the risk of coronary heart disease in postmenopausal women, says a new study.
For every 10 microgram increase in the amount of vitamin K2 consumed, researchers from the Netherlands report a 9 per cent reduction in the risk of developing coronary heart disease (CHD).
The effects were mostly confined to the higher forms of vitamin K2, namely menaquinones 7 to 9, according to results published online ahead of print in the Nutrition, Metabolism and Cardiovascular Diseases.
“Our findings may have important practical implications on CVD prevention, it is important to mention that in order to increase the intake of vitamin K2, increasing the portion vitamin K2 rich foods in daily life might not be a good idea,” wrote lead author Gerrie-Cor Gast from the Julius Center for Health Sciences and Primary Care at the University Medical Center Utrecht.
“Vitamin K2 might be, for instance more relevant in the form of a supplement or in low-fat dairy.”

Study provides additional evidence that potato chips should be eaten in moderation- Study...
A new study published in the March 2009 American Journal of Clinical Nutrition by Marek Naruszewicz and colleagues from Poland suggests that acrylamide from foods may increase the risk of heart disease. Acrylamide has been linked previously to nervous system disorders and possibly to cancer.

Video - Why humans age...
While this video was produced to sell the product Longevinex, it is an amazing explanation as to why we age as we grow old. I really recommend you watch this, as it explains why I recommend on my site Resveratrol with grape polyphenols and IP6, as these phytonutrients address the overmineralization explanation of aging and offers a way to reverse these accumulated elements.
While resveratrol has recently gained widespread public and scientific attention for it age prolonging qualities, Longevinex® is a unique multi-ingredient dietary supplement that is more than just resveratrol. The ingredients in Longevinex® are designed to address five major theories of aging: the free radical/antioxidant theory, the hormonal theory (estrogen/testosterone), the mitochondrial (cell energy) theory, the cell cleansing or autophagy theory, and the metabolic, calorie restriction/Sirtuin gene activation theory. There is another theory of aging, Overmineralization, also addressed by the ingredients in Longevinex®, which may supersede and better explain other theories of aging.

Video - Why supplement your diet with nutrients like vitamins, minerals, CoQ10, Lipoic Acid etc.Dr. Diana Schwarzbein, M.D., discusses how she uses supplements in her practice and why they are needed today and why quality counts so much.

How to Slash World Cancer Rates By 90 Percent: Healthy Foods, Exercise and Vitamin D ...
(NaturalNews) Although you won't hear this from the cancer industry or the drug companies that profit from cancer, there's an easy, low-cost and remarkably safe way to slash cancer rates around the world by about one-third, says the World Cancer Research Fund: Promote healthy foods and exercise! (http://www.wcrf-uk.org)According to research just released by the WCRF, simple changes in diet and exercise can prevent nearly 40 percent of breast and pancreatic cancers, 36 percent of lung cancers, over 60 percent of mouth cancers, a quarter of kidney cancers and 45 percent of bowel cancers.Remarkably, these results were achieved without any mention of vitamin D! By adding vitamin D to the mix, which by itself has been demonstrated to prevent an astonishing 77 percent of all cancers (http://www.naturalnews.com/021892.html), cancer prevention rates approaching 90 percent overall can be easily achieved.

Two New Studies Document Natural Breast Cancer Fighters ...
(NaturalNews) A couple of words strike enormous fear in the hearts of countless women: breast cancer. And it's no wonder. American Cancer Society (ACS) statistics reveal it's the most common cancer among women in the United States, other than skin cancer. In fact, the ACS says a woman's chance of having invasive breast cancer some time during her life is about 1 in 8 and her chance of dying from the disease is about 1 in 35. However, there is a growing body of scientific evidence that natural substances are formidable weapons to both prevent breast cancer and halt its growth once cells are malignant. In fact, two new studies offer even more proof there are natural ways to fight breast cancer.

Some Diets May Be Better Than Others For Keeping Weight Off And Staying Healthy, Study Suggests...
ScienceDaily (Mar. 5, 2009) — Any diet will do? Not if you want to lose fat instead of muscle. Not if you want to lower your triglyceride levels so you'll be less likely to develop diabetes and heart disease. Not if you want to avoid cravings that tempt you to cheat on your diet. And not if you want to keep the weight off long-term.

"The significant problems we face cannot be solved at the same level of thinking we were at when we created them." Albert Einstein

Why do we get soft bones, lose our teeth and yet get calcified arteries, heart valves and cataracts as we age?

Have you ever wondered why we lose our teeth and get diseases like Osteoporosis, but at the same time can have calcification going on in soft tissues like the eyes, arteries, heart valves, and joints? This is also known as the calcium paradox.

Osteoporosis (OSS-tee-oh-pore-OH-sis) is a disease occurring mostly in older adults due to a loss of bone density and a breakdown of bone structure. The bones become porous, thin, and brittle. Osteoporosis is a major health problem in the U.S.

From a biochemical standpoint it is not that difficult to explain. As we get older we get out less and get a lot less sun, which produces vitamin D, and we also tend to move less, tending to get less exercise. Both of these issues affect calcium absorption and utilization.

There are other factors, too. Americans don't eat enough colorful fruits and vegetables which contain phytonutrients and alkalizing elements that have been shown to improve bone health.
As we age we don't digest or absorb nutrients as well as we did in our youth. After age 40, we begin to produce less hydrochloric acid in the stomach which is involved in digesting proteins and minerals out of foods we eat. Also, many people use drugs like Prilosec that stop the production of stomach acids in a bad attempt at stopping acid reflux disease.
Also, if you drink soda, which contains high levels of phosphorous, you will leach calcium from your bones. Dr. Michael Murray from the Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine concluded, “It appears that increased soft drink consumption is a major factor that contributes to osteoporosis.” Furthermore, Dr. Elson Haas, author of The Detox Diet states, “Tooth loss, periodontal disease, and gingivitis can be problems, especially with a high phosphorus intake particularly from soft drinks.”

Americans eat a diet high in calcium and have been getting calcium tablets recommended to them for years as well thinking this was the problem. It didn't work because calcium in the diet is not the main issue. It is the lack of digestion, high consumption of phosphorus, as well as nutrient deficiencies like D3, C, K2, magnesium, Boron, B-6, B-12, etc, that are the main culprits.

Recent research is telling us that 70% of Americans, especially in the north, are vitamin D deficient. Low magnesium levels are found in roughly 40% to 60% of the population, not to mention boron, B-12, B-6, and K2. All these nutrients are involved in making calcium work properly in the body. Without them calcium goes where it shouldn't, the soft tissues, and does not get placed in the bones where it belongs. Also, trace minerals like copper, manganese, and zinc play a role in calcium absorption.

As a way to support this issue I have formulated 2 products.
One is called Bone Minerals that deals with digestion and basic minerals and Bone Health for people who don't need more digestive acid.
I also have formulated a product for people who have Periodontal issues called Periodontal Health.

From another source I also like a multi called Synergy CardioLift that focuses on heart health, which has all the nutrients that I speak about above, as well as Resveratrol which improves bone health at the gene expression level.

Enjoy this week's supporting studies and articles.

Vitamin C may protect elderly gents from bone loss...
Higher levels of vitamin C from the diet may reduce the loss of bone mineral density in elderly men, says a new study from the US.
But higher intakes of the vitamin from supplements may only have a beneficial effect on the bone health of male smokers, according to findings published in the new issue of the Journal of Nutrition.

Natural Vitamin K2 Intake Associated With Reduced Risk Of Hip Fractures In New Japanese Study...
Results of the study conducted by Yaegashi, et al., indicated that dietary vitamin K2 intake, especially from the food natto (menaquinone-7; MK-7), is associated with a significantly decreased risk of hip fracture.

Fight Osteoporosis: Bone Up On B12...
ScienceDaily (Apr. 23, 2005) — Women are about four times more likely than men to develop osteoporosis, or weak, porous bones. But a new study links vitamin B12 deficiency with low bone mineral density in men, and confirms similar, previously reported findings in women.

CALCIUM AND VITAMIN D — NEW INSIGHTS...
How much calcium do we really need? And how should we get it? The dairy companies are continually urging us to consume more of their product, implying that this will help prevent osteoporosis (thin bones) and the consequent hip fractures. But are dairy products actually effective in preventing fractures?
Unfortunately for the dairy companies, there is little compelling evidence that milk consumption in the usual quantities really decreases the risk of breaking a bone. It seems that drinking another glass or two of ordinary milk each day is unlikely to help. So what does help?
THE NURSES’ STUDY...Probably the best study to date on this topic is that of Professor Walter Willett of the Harvard Medical School, who has studied 72,000 American nurses for eighteen years1. His researchers' regularly recorded the women’s diet, and their nutritional supplement use, over the course of the study and noted the number of post-menopausal hip fractures that they suffered. Statistical analysis of the data showed that there was no significant relationship between the number of hip fractures and the amount of milk that they consumed. In other words, more milk did not help. The same study also found that calcium supplements averaging 400 to 500 milligrams per day were without detectable effect on the rate of hip fracture in these women, who were consuming typical American diets.

Boron: Under-Appreciated Mineral Enhances Cognition, Bone and Joint Health...
Boron is perhaps one of the least known and underappreciated minerals. Its bone- and joint-supporting abilities are often neglected in favor of calcium, when in reality it works with calcium to maintain healthy bones. Few individuals are aware of the other ways boron is important to health, including a surprising ability to enhance cognition. Because boron is so important to many aspects of health, it is particularly troubling that many individuals are deficient in this important mineral, increasing the risk of osteoporosis and arthritis.
Since 1923 boron has been recognized as an essential nutrient for plants. Among plants the deficiency of boron is the most common deficiency of any trace element.

Magnesium boosts bone health in teenage girls ...
(NaturalNews) Girls who take magnesium supplements as adolescents may be giving themselves stronger bones for the future.
Researchers at the Yale University School of Medicine took a selection of Caucasian girls aged eight to 14 and gave them either a daily 300 mg supplement of magnesium oxide – taken in two doses – or a placebo. The year-long test was double-blind. "It's not surprise to find that magnesium supplementation boosts bone density," said consumer health advocate Mike Adams, author of "The Seven Laws of Nutrition." "Combined with adequate sunlight exposure to generate vitamin D plus healthy calcium consumption, magnesium completes the puzzle and delivers outstanding bone health to women of all ages."

Nutrient Supports Bone Health Over Time...
ScienceDaily (Jan. 23, 2009) — Findings from a new study suggest that natural pigments found in plants may help protect against bone loss in older men and women. Researchers funded by the Agricultural Research Service (ARS) reported the findings in a paper published online by The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

Consuming Cola May Up Osteoporosis Risk For Older Women, Study Suggests...
ScienceDaily (Oct. 7, 2006) — According to the National Osteoporosis Foundation, approximately 55 percent of Americans, mostly women, are at risk of developing osteoporosis, a disease of porous and brittle bones that causes higher susceptibility to bone fractures. Now, Katherine Tucker, PhD, director of the Epidemiology and Dietary Assessment Program at the Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University, and colleagues have reported findings in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition that cola, a popular beverage for many Americans, may contribute to lower bone mineral density in older women, a condition which increases risk for osteoporosis.

Important Vitamin D Update...
A meta-analysis of 18 randomized controlled trials has found that supplemental vitamin D significantly reduces mortality from all causes. The analysis emphasizes the medical, ethical, and legal implications of promptly diagnosing and adequately treating vitamin D deficiency. Not only are such deficiencies common, but vitamin D deficiency is implicated in most of the diseases of civilization. Vitamin D's final metabolic product targets more than 200 human genes in a wide variety of tissues. One of the most important genes vitamin D up-regulates is for cathelicidin, a naturally occurring broad-spectrum antibiotic.

Neutralizing Acidosis And Bone Loss Among Mature Adults...
ScienceDaily (Feb. 11, 2009) — A new study funded in part by the Agricultural Research Service (ARS) suggests that neutralizing an acid-producing diet may be an important key to reducing bone breakdown, or "turnover," while aging. The study comes on the heels of several ARS-reported studies suggesting that consuming more-than-recommended amounts of calcium may not be the main answer to protecting bone.

Key nutrients for bone health — vitamin B12 (cobalamin)...
Because of their role in the detoxification of homocysteine, vitamins B6, B12, and folic acid have all been recently added to our list of important bone-protecting nutrients. Osteoblasts, the body’s bone-building cells, require an adequate supply of B12, or their ability to function properly will be compromised. Vitamin B12 deficiency anemia has been associated with osteoporosis, and having low serum levels of vitamin B12 has also been associated recently with frailty in older women.
