As science begins to unravel the mechanisms of life and death at the cellular level, ongoing research throws a spotlight onto the mitochondria. The mitochondria not only sustain life by generating energy, but end life by triggering programmed cell death (apoptosis). Indeed death and degeneration begin in the mitochondria as cellular respiration declines and “cellular suicide” increases. Mitochondria hold the key to cellular life and death. Mitochondrial aging depletes vitality, but mitochondrial rejuvenation may help to restore it. There are specific nutrients that improve mitochondria function and when taken regularly, have dramatic effects on health, energy and improved fat burning at the cellular level. Orthomolecular Formulations has a proven formula called OM Extend that combines all the most important nutrients, like the ones described in the below studies, to restore cellular function. It is based on the latest research on Metabolic Syndrome, Anti-Aging and Antioxidant protection.

Lipoic acid and carnitine combo show diabetes potential...
18-Feb-2008 - A combination of lipoic acid and acetyl-L-carnitine may boost the function of mitochondria - the cell's power stations - suggests research with implications for diabetes and obesity.

More support for L-Carnitine combo against ageing...
17-May-2006 - A combination of two common dietary supplements, L-carnitine and alpha-lipoic acid, could reduce oxidative stress associated with ageing and boost energy production, says new research - adding to previous reports. After 60 days of supplementation, the researchers found that the level of reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation in the older rats was significantly higher than in younger and middle-aged rats. Supplementation with the L-carnitine, alpha-lipoic acid combination reduced the level of ROS by 28 per cent, compared to placebo.
Supplementation with either compound independently only reduced the level of ROS by about nine per cent. Similar benefits were observed for other markers of the ageing process including lipid peroxides and protein oxidation due to the combination supplement.
"Our study strongly suggests that supplementation of mitochondrial metabolites, carnitine and lipoic acid may prevent mitochondrial damage and restore mitochondrial function during ageing process," said the researchers.

Green Tea and the “Asian Paradox”...
There is a lower incidence of cardiovascular disease and cancer in Asia where people smoke heavily, which may be accounted for by high consumption of tea, particularly green tea, according to a review article published by a Yale School of Medicine researcher.
“We do not yet have a full explanation for the ‘Asian paradox,’ which refers to the very low incidence of both heart disease and cancer in Asia, even though consumption of cigarettes is greater than in most other countries,” said Bauer Sumpio, M.D., professor and Chief of Vascular Surgery in the Department of Surgery. “But we now have some theories.” He said one theory is that the average 1.2 liters of green tea consumed daily by many people in Asia offers the anti-oxidant protective effects of the polyphenolic EGCG. EGCG may prevent LDL oxidation, which has been shown to play a key role in the pathophysiology of arteriosclerosis. EGCG also reduces the amount of platelet aggregation, regulates lipids, and promotes proliferation and migration of smooth muscle cells, which are all factors in reducing cardiovascular disease, he said.

Green tea found to significantly reduce risk of death, heart disease...
NaturalNews) A Japanese study found that drinking green tea can lower the risk of death from a variety of illnesses, including cardiovascular disease. The Tohoku University study -- started in 1994 -- looked at 40,530 healthy adults aged 40 to 79 who lived in Northeastern Japan, where roughly 80 percent of people drink green tea and more than half drink three or more cups daily.
Over the course of the 11-year study, people who drank five or more cups of green tea per day had a 16 percent lowered risk of dying from any cause and, during the seven-year follow-up, had a 26 percent lower risk of dying from cardiovascular disease when compared to people who drank fewer than one cup a day. The study found no association between green tea consumption and death from cancer.

Green Tea Nutrient EGCG Blocks Diabetes-Promoting Effects of High Fructose Corn Syrup ...
(NaturalNews) While new research suggests that beverages containing high fructose corn syrup may increase a person's risk of contracting diabetes, the same study has also found evidence that a chemical in tea vastly counterbalances the cell-damaging effect of the sweetener. Researchers discovered that beverages made with high fructose corn syrup contain high levels of reactive carbonyls, a free radical linked to tissue damage, the development of diabetes, and the occurrence of diabetes complications. When they added a chemical naturally occurring in tea to the beverages, however, the levels of reactive carbonyls drastically decreased.

Coenzyme Q10 A Vital Energy Nutrient...
(NaturalNews) Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is a fat soluble compound best known for its vital function in the production of energy inside cells. It is concentrated in the part of the cell that churns out energy, the mitochondria. A lesser known function of CoQ10 may be its powerful antioxidant activity in cell membranes and in lipoproteins like LDL cholesterol. Cardiologist, congestive heart failure (CHF) researcher and international CoQ10 expert, Peter H. Langsjoen, MD, FACC says that "The heart muscle uses more energy than any other organ in our bodies". Skeletal muscle, the brain, the liver and gum tissue are also big energy consumers. These organs and tissues require optimal amounts of CoQ10 for optimal energy production for optimal health.Cells use enzymes to break down chemical bonds in molecules to produce energy. Importantly, enzymes just can't perform without their supporting cast of coenzymes. Many vitamins and CoQ10 are coenzymes and without them energy production is impaired. According to Dr. Langsjoen, "CoQ10 is a coenzyme for three large enzyme systems that are essential for 90% of cellular energy production".

Nutrients in the news this week...
Dry mouth is a common complaint of people as they get older, especially if you take drugs. Many drugs have dry mouth as a side effect. Having dry mouth at night while you are sleeping will eventually cause your teeth to become loose and gum disease and gingivitis to take hold. If you don't want dentures, you need to deal with this issue aggressively. I recommend reducing drugs when ever possible, and doing a night time protocol to reduce bacteria in the mouth that builds up, from the dryness. To reverse this tendency, brush you teeth with a peroxide/baking soda tooth paste and then follow with a 30 second gargle and brushing with Listerine. Also, vitamin C, along with D, magnesium, K, boron etc, will keep the gums and bone from receding, and reverse it if it has already progressed. PERIODONTAL HEALTH is a product I formulated that is designed to protect and assist in all aspects of tooth and jaw health.

PARIS (AFP) - Lack of folate, also called vitamin B-9, may triple the risk of developing dementia in old age, according to a study published Tuesday. Researchers in South Korea measured naturally occurring folate levels in 518 elderly persons, none of whom showed any signs of dementia, and then tracked their development over 2.4 years.
At the end of the period, 45 of the patients had developed dementia, including 34 diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, said the study, published by the British Medical Association's Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Psychiatry.
When the researchers, led by Jin-Sang Yoon of Chonnam National University in Kwangju, South Korea, remeasured folate levels, they uncovered a strong link with the dementia.

Fast-Acting Carbs May Hasten Vision Loss Over Time...
ScienceDaily (Dec. 1, 2007) — Consuming higher-than-average amounts of carbohydrates that cause blood sugar levels to spike and fall rapidly could be a risk factor for central vision loss with aging. Diets high in carbohydrates that are quickly digested and absorbed, resulting in a rapid rise in blood sugar levels, are considered high-glycemic-index diets. Examples of such "fast carb" foods are white bread, rice, potatoes and pasta, and also sugars and corn syrups. Carbohydrates leading to a more gradual rise and fall in blood sugar levels comprise low-glycemic-index diets. Such "slow carb" foods include whole-grain versions of bread, rice and pasta.

The Right Type of Fats for Health and Longevity...

Eskimo people have proven this over the ages with their diet comprising of over 50% of their total calorie intake from fish and fish oil - which is high in Omega-3 fatty acids, as well as vitamin A. The interesting thing about the Eskimo people is that they enjoy good health with no cardiovascular diseases or cholesterol concerns.Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids are known as ‘essential fatty acids’ (EFA) because they cannot be synthesized by the human body and, hence, we need to acquire them from dietary sources or good quality supplements. There is a lot of promotional hype and dietary advice by many leading health sources and health authorities suggesting we increase these fatty acids in our diet. One of the most reliable and well researched of these sources includes cardiologist, Dr. Ross Walker (http://www.drrosswalker.com/) . However, there are some very important facts that we need to understand in relation to consuming these oils for optimal benefit, as opposed to just ingesting some capsules that may be completely useless in contributing to our wellness.

Nutrition in the news...
I woke up this morning to see a local article saying that vitamin supplements were basically useless. These stories really bug me, because they are without scientific merit. It is pure propaganda from the AMA. Folks, I have been at this for over 30 years and have seen remarkable changes in people who begin to supplement the right nutrients from quality nutraceutical companies. I also realize that dietary change is the most important thing you can do to influence your overall health. Here are some studies that confirm this, that came out this month.

Is the Standard American Diet (SAD) Bad for Your Health?...
(NaturalNews) Extreme is a good way to describe the diet that most people in America subsist on. Many people wouldn’t look at the standard American diet, and call it extreme; many would just call it normal. But if you look at the diet close-up, we can see that it is pretty extreme, and certainly not healthy. The Standard American Diet usually consists of a myriad of processed carbs (cereals, breads, pasta, cookies, cakes etc.), processed meat products, and a few fruits and veggies. What you eat is the foundation of your health – so what is in this diet? This diet is high in many things, most of which your body doesn’t really need. It is full of hydrogenated oil, high fructose corn syrup, phytic acid, acrylamide, sodium nitrate, monosodium glutamate (MSG) and lacking in basic essentials such as vitamins, minerals.

Cold medicine scam finally exposed after decades of harming children...
(NaturalNews) Another example of outright quackery by pharmaceutical companies has finally gathered enough steam to achieve mainstream news coverage: Cold medicines are useless, say pediatricians who petitioned the FDA to ban the marketing of such products to children. Last month, an FDA advisory panel partially agreed with the recommendation, and voted to declare that such medicines should not be used in children younger than six.Notably, the FDA advisory panel still somehow believes the same useless medicines are perfectly fine to be used by children older than six (they struck down a vote to recommend blocking the use of such medicines in children aged 6 to 11). This is especially relevant given that the panel openly admitted that there is no evidence that cold medicines work in older children, either.

Weighing nearly 400 pounds, man walks off half his weight...
Novak, who was approaching his 40th birthday, made it through the football game. As he ate two double-cheeseburgers and a milkshake, he began to think about the limitations of obesity and how it was keeping him from living a full life. Novak said the extra weight kept him from riding bikes with his kids. He dreaded doing anything physical like mowing the grass, shoveling snow or just moving -- period. Novak says even sleeping became difficult.
"When I was big, I could only sleep one way ... so I could support my belly," says Novak. "My back always hurt ... I could barely sleep and I remember always being tired."
The next day, Novak devised his own game plan and started his weight-loss journey.
He began simply by walking -- one mile a day and eating a low-carbohydrate diet of 15-30 grams a day. "I walked off my first 100 pounds," he says. "Walked it off, an hour a day. I lost 100 pounds in seven months."

Fatty liver is reportedly on the rise in the US, with between one quarter and one half of Americans, and the prevalence if nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has increased in line with the ongoing obesity epidemic, state the researchers in the Journal of Nutrition.

Increased levels of the vitamin, associated with increased intake of fruit and vegetables, were found to offer significant cardiovascular benefits among the 20,649 men and women taking part in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer. The authors, led by Phyo Myint from the University of Cambridge, state that blood levels of the vitamin could be used as a biological marker of lifestyle used to identify people at high risk of stroke.

Four health changes can prolong life 14 years ...
LONDON (Reuters) - People who drink moderately, exercise, quit smoking and eat five servings of fruit and vegetables each day live on average 14 years longer than people who adopt none of these behaviors, researchers said on Tuesday. Overwhelming evidence has shown that these things contribute to healthier and longer lives, but the new study actually quantified their combined impact, the British team said.
"These results may provide further support for the idea that even small differences in lifestyle may make a big difference to health in the population and encourage behavior change," the researchers wrote in the journal PLoS Medicine.

Whole Grains Found to Stabilize Blood Sugar For up to Ten Hours...
(NaturalNews) When eaten as part of a breakfast with a low glycemic index, whole grains can help control blood sugar all day long, according to a study conducted at Lund University in Sweden. A breakfast with a low glycemic index even appeared to improve alertness and mental function.Anne Nilsson of the Unit for Applied Nutrition and Food Chemistry tested the effects of four different types of whole grains and found that in a low glycemic index breakfast, whole grains regulated the body's blood sugar for up to 10 hours. The study suggested that the same effect could be gained from eating whole grains before bed.

Lipoic Acid Could Reduce Atherosclerosis, Weight Gain...
ScienceDaily (Jan. 17, 2008) — A new study done with mice has discovered that supplements of lipoic acid can inhibit formation of arterial lesions, lower triglycerides, and reduce blood vessel inflammation and weight gain -- all key issues for addressing cardiovascular disease. Although the results cannot be directly extrapolated beyond the laboratory, researchers report that "they strongly suggest that lipoic acid supplementation may be useful as an inexpensive but effective intervention strategy . . . reducing known risk factors for the development of atherosclerosis and other inflammatory vascular diseases in humans."

Green tea shows benefits against fatty liver...
22/01/2008 - Extracts from green tea may stop the build-up of fatty deposits in the liver, and offer benefits for this silent killer linked to obesity, suggests a new study with mice.
If the results can be translated to humans, green tea and its extracts could become a useful preventative in the development of fatty liver, a condition that is usually symptomless but said to increase the risk for liver inflammation, and ultimately results in liver failure. Fatty liver is reportedly on the rise in the US, with between one quarter and one half of Americans, and the prevalence if nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has increased in line with the ongoing obesity epidemic, state the researchers in the Journal of Nutrition.
